00:00This is John Bergman, coming up next, only on Showtime, America's number one boxing network.
00:23The present and the future.
00:26One, a more tangible quantity, the other, an unfulfilled promise.
00:32In boxing's 140-pound division, the present is 30-year-old Kostya Su.
00:37The hard-hitting and battle-tested Su has slammed his way to two world titles
00:42and is believed by many to be the best in his weight class.
00:46The future could belong to Zab Judah.
00:48Fast, flashy, and only 22, this rising star overwhelms his opponents with speed, power,
00:55and a poise beyond his years.
00:58Tonight, they battle different opponents, but this doubleheader serves as a preview
01:03for when the present and future collide.
01:06The future mayors'
01:55Tonight, Showtime Championship Boxing comes to you from the Mohegan Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
02:01A potentially explosive night of boxing lies ahead as we present a world championship doubleheader.
02:08The spotlight falls on the 140-pound division, which features some real heavy hitters.
02:13And this evening, two of its most exciting stars will be center stage.
02:18In our main event, it will be hard-punching two-time world champion Kostya Su,
02:22making his first defense of the WBC Super Lightweight title against No. 5 rated Ahmed Santos.
02:28First up in our co-feature, you'll see undefeated interim champ and No. 1 contender Zab Judah
02:33go for his first world championship belt as he meets No. 2 ranked Jan Bergman
02:37for the vacant IVF junior welterweight crown.
02:40As we make our way indoors here at the Mohegan Sun Events Center, capacity for boxing about 1,400.
02:47It's filled up, enthusiastic crowd on hand, and eager anticipation of a memorable night of boxing.
02:53If action, power, and speed are your thing, then you have definitely come to the right place.
02:57All of those attributes should be on display here in this room tonight.
03:01Hello again, everybody. Steve Albert, Roaring Sun.
03:06This evening, we've got the Red Hot 140-pounders on parade.
03:09Whether you call them super lightweights or junior welterweights,
03:13they have become one of the most vibrant and entertaining divisions in boxing today.
03:17It's a division that features some tremendous talent across the board.
03:20When you look at some of the names, the prospect of title unification becomes quite alluring.
03:25Two of the four world champions are from the United States,
03:28but by the end of the night, there could be three.
03:30And later tonight, we'll see the fighter who is perhaps the most pugnacious and relentless champion
03:35in this particular weight class.
03:37He's Kostya Zou, a no-nonsense, ruthless warrior with a hit-or-be-hit mentality.
03:43Let's show you the landscape, okay?
03:45Tonight's headliner, the aforementioned strong Russian Kostya Zou, now residing in Australia,
03:50is the WBC champion, slick southpaw.
03:53Shambay Mitchell, out of the D.C. and Maryland area, represents the WBA.
03:57The IBF title became vacant when Teron Millett broke his hand, couldn't defend,
04:02and was stripped of the belt.
04:03When he returns, he'll be the number one contender and mandatory challenger.
04:06So tonight, rising star in some field, budding superstar Zab Judah of New York hopes to lay claim to the title.
04:13And finally, unbeaten knockout specialist Randall Bailey from Miami heads up the WBO.
04:18And with that, let me bring on my ringside partners.
04:22First, the fight doctor, Ferdie Pacheco.
04:23And Ferdie, impressive lineup at 140.
04:26Does Kostya Zou get your vote as number one overall?
04:29Not only my vote, I think he's head and shoulders above everybody else.
04:32However, I like this kid Randall Bailey out of Miami.
04:34He's got knockout power.
04:35He needs a lot more experience.
04:36But what we've got here is four fighters that you can mix and make
04:40and make about a year and a half of great fights as they fight each other and end up with one guy.
04:45It could be a great night tonight.
04:46Really becoming a terrific division.
04:48Let's bring on our other partner here, Bobby Chez.
04:50Bobby, what kind of assignment does Ahmed Santos have ahead of him against the dominant Sioux?
04:55Well, Steve, Santos has an incredible assignment ahead of him tonight.
04:57First, he has to stay outside, box and box smart.
05:00But on the inside, he has to get his pound of flesh.
05:02It's imperative that he gets Zou's respect.
05:05If he doesn't, Zou's going to run right through him.
05:07The champion likes to come out fast and get to the action.
05:09In order for Santos to have a chance to take this fight along and outbox him,
05:12he needs to get that pound of flesh, get it early, and then box outside smart.
05:16That's a daunting task for Santos,
05:18who didn't seem to be that respectful of the champion in our fighter meeting yesterday.
05:22We'll see what happens later tonight in our main event.
05:25Now, as usual for you Showtime subscribers with internet access,
05:28we once again invite you to judge every round of every fight online.
05:32Yeah, score tonight's bouts at show.com.
05:35The results will be posted online and announced here during the telecast.
05:38Of course, your scoring is for entertainment purposes only,
05:40and due to time zone considerations,
05:42it's only relevant to viewers of our live East Coast feed.
05:45And at 11 p.m. Eastern Time, 8 Pacific,
05:48we invite you to chat online with WBA Super Welterweight Champion David Reed.
05:52He's ready to discuss tonight's fights with you,
05:55as well as upcoming pay-per-view bout with Felix Tito Trinidad.
05:59Once again, the web address is show.com.
06:01That's S-H-O dot com.
06:06Well, we close in on our co-feature as number one contender,
06:09Zab Judah of Brooklyn faces number two rated Jan Bergman of South Africa
06:12for the vacant IBF Junior Welterweight title,
06:15a classic case of youth versus experience.
06:21Brooklyn, USA.
06:23To those who hail from that hallowed New York borough,
06:25it's more than a mere spot on the map.
06:27It's a state of mind.
06:28They say you can take the kid out of Brooklyn,
06:30but you can't take Brooklyn out of the kid.
06:33Lifelong Brooklynite Zab Judah strives to be part of the select few
06:36who've made it big from Brooklyn.
06:45The tough neighborhoods of Brooklyn are littered with stories of unfulfilled dreams
06:50and tragic endings.
06:52Yet over the last 15 years, these streets have produced an impressive roster of fighters,
06:57including champions Mark Freeland, Riddick Bowe, and, of course, Mike Tyson.
07:03The newest Brooklyn star, undefeated junior welterweight, Zab Judah.
07:08The type of way the Brooklyn life is, you know, I mean, I can't speak for those guys,
07:14but I can speak for myself.
07:15I mean, with me, it was a hard life, you know what I'm saying,
07:18coming out of Brooklyn.
07:19Typical day was like, you know, I mean, you go outside and you see cheese snatching,
07:24purse snatching.
07:26I mean, it's just it.
07:27I mean, you could walk on your feet, money in Venice,
07:29somebody come pick a fight with you.
07:30I knew how to fight, you know, which made me different from anybody else in the hood.
07:35When they say Zab Judah, it's like a friend of Whitaker.
07:38That's like a compliment to me because if people remember,
07:42he was one of the best fighters in the world.
07:43He was the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
07:47And, yeah, it is hard to live up to trying to be like Mike,
07:50to be like Whitaker.
07:52You know what I mean?
07:52It's kind of hard, but, you know,
07:55I learned that you've got to crawl before you walk.
07:57And that's a true state.
07:58You've got to crawl before you walk.
08:01So you had to meet me.
08:03I was patient.
08:03I listened.
08:04I learned.
08:05And Whitaker told me, he said, be patient.
08:07Everybody's time comes around.
08:09Just that when your time comes around, know what to do with it.
08:19And here is the unbeaten southpaw phenom named Zab Judah,
08:23who hasn't even come close to losing.
08:26He's the interim IBF junior, by the way, champion,
08:28who's won five straight by knockout,
08:30the last two in the first round.
08:40Judah has had an extraordinary career.
08:42What an amateur career, winning 110 of 115,
08:46including the National Golden Gloves and New York Golden Gloves three times.
08:50In 1996, he was an alternate on the United States Olympic team.
08:54He is one of seven brothers who all box.
08:58His father, slash trainer, Yole, is a six-time kickboxing world champion.
09:03Extremely confident young man.
09:06In some ways, Judah resembles a young Cordell Whitaker.
09:10Very slick, elusive, but with power.
09:13Sweet pea with a punch.
09:14And Ferdy utilizes his exceptional speed to swarm over opponents before knocking them out.
09:20You've got to be impressed with this 22-year-old kid.
09:23I certainly am.
09:23Anytime you can compare a guy to Pernaut Whitaker,
09:25and then add the kicker, but he's got a punch.
09:28Wow, you've got a fighter.
09:29Now, Lou Duva tells me,
09:31I've been this excited in a fight since I got Pernaut Whitaker,
09:34Melder, Kaila out of the Olympics.
09:35This guy is it.
09:36He's the whole package.
09:37Well, let's see what he can do today.
09:38He's fighting with a very tall guy,
09:40and he didn't seem to give him any respect at all in our interviews.
09:44Yeah, you're talking, of course, about the South African, Jan Bergman,
09:48who does have the size over Zab Judah,
09:52but Judah, seven years younger than the 29-year-old Jan Bergman.
09:56Judah idolizes Pernaut Whitaker,
09:59who he also trains with.
10:01They're stable mates.
10:03Although Sweet Pea is more or less retired at the age of 36,
10:08but will he someday come close to matching
10:11the future Hall of Famer's accomplishments?
10:13We'll soon find out.
10:16Kostya Zou, who fights in the main event,
10:19cautioned Zab Judah that Jan Bergman will be his toughest test.
10:24Bobby, let's take a look at the keys to victory for these two fighters tonight.
10:28All right, let's go with the interim champion, Zab Judah, first.
10:31He has to utilize that great hand speed.
10:33It's just so wonderful.
10:34Also closed the gap.
10:35He's got a bigger, taller man,
10:36and go to the body and head in combination,
10:38mix it up, keep him thinking.
10:40And how about his opponent, Jan Bergman?
10:43Well, this guy is tall and got nice reach,
10:45so he's going to have to use a sharp jab,
10:47accurate counterpunch.
10:48He has to make Zab Judah Pei,
10:50and also Fox Smart from the outside.
10:51That's his game.
10:53Former South African champion Jan Bergman
10:56at 140 pounds.
10:58After winning his first 32-24 by knockout,
11:01he got his first taste of world title experience
11:04when he met tonight's headliner,
11:06Kostya Zou for the IBF crown in 96.
11:09Bergman suffered his first loss
11:10when he was stopped in the 6-by-2.
11:12Since the loss, though, he's won 6 out of 7,
11:14including 3 in a row.
11:17Let's check the tail of the tape.
11:20Judah has the age.
11:22Bergman the size.
11:23At just 22, Judah, as mentioned,
11:257 years younger.
11:264-inch height advantage for Bergman.
11:27Both under the limit at yesterday's weigh-in.
11:29Fight time weights.
11:30Judah, 140, so just about the same.
11:34Bergman gains the weight at 149.
11:364-and-a-half-inch reach advantage for Bergman.
11:37The key rules, as you can see,
11:39no standing 8, no 3 knockdown rule.
11:41Fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round.
11:43Accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the 4th.
11:45Technical draw after the end of round 4.
11:48They go to the scorecard.
11:49So here at the Mohegan Sun Event Center

13:40He has 29 wins coming by way of knockout.
13:44Here is the former South African
13:46and WBC international champion,
13:49now rated the IBF number two contender,
13:52introducing Jan Kidd-Gavilan Bergman.
14:00And his opponent across the ring on my right,
14:04fighting out of the red corner,
14:05this 12-round championship bout,
14:07wearing red trunks with white and black trim,
14:09fighting out of and representing his hometown of Brooklyn, New York.
14:15He weighed in at 138.5 pounds.
14:19His record is undefeated at 21 wins,
14:21no losses,
14:23one no contest with 16 wins coming by way of knockout.
14:27Here is the IBF interim champion
14:29and the number one ranked IBF Junior Welterweight,
14:33introducing the undefeated Zab,
14:36Super Juna.
14:39Once again a referee on charge,
14:44Steve Smoker now to give instructions,
14:4612 rounds of boxing scheduled for this vacant title.
14:49All right, gentlemen,
14:50you are giving me instructions in the way,
14:52and I want you to obey my commands at all times,
14:53respect the bell at all times,
14:55and the bubble will protect yourself at all times.
14:57These are a little...
14:58Yes, yes.
15:00And that is a lawful shot from a red up.
15:02Lawful blow right there.
15:04All this one,
15:04no worries.
15:04That's a lawful shot.
15:08All this one,
15:09no worries about it.
15:10Okay,
15:10it's a lawful shot.
15:11Yes, sir.
15:12All right.
15:13All same,
15:13Howard.
15:14Okay.
15:16Lou Duva getting right into the mix there with referee Steve Smoker concerning the height of the trunks of Jan Bergman.
15:23As you can hear in the background,
15:24Brooklyn well represented.
15:26That might just be Judah's family.
15:28Zab Judah,
15:29by his account,
15:29he's lost just one round his entire pro career.
15:33The eighth against Mickey Ward when he took a good body shot.
15:36Otherwise,
15:36he's seldom been threatened.
15:38Jan Bergman,
15:39can he catch Judah with his chief weapon,
15:41the left hook?
15:42Some feel the most prolific in this division,
15:45but Judah,
15:46exceptional speed,
15:47punching power.
15:47You'll see lots of movement,
15:49but unlike most slick boxers,
15:51very aggressive.
15:52Bobby,
15:53how does Bergman deal with Judah's speed and overall slickness?
15:56Well,
15:56you know,
15:57he has the height and he has the reach.
15:58He's got a little bit of speed of his own.
15:59It's not a blinding difference here,
16:01but the height and that reach are going to be,
16:02important.
16:03It's very important for that jab.
16:05He can make it a stiff jab.
16:08He can set up the combinations and he can keep this fight at the range he wants.
16:11Right now,
16:12Zab is hotdogging a little bit.
16:14I mean,
16:14it's almost like Brunel Whitaker used to it.
16:17He just plays with him.
16:17He's got such great reflexes.
16:19He can do that,
16:20but it's not getting any points.
16:23The elusive Judah
16:24said the big difference in this fight will be defense.
16:28He said,
16:28the D will throw Bergman off,
16:31just stand in front of him,
16:32make a miss,
16:33then catch him before he warms up.
16:34But he does have respect for the South African.
16:37While he did say hit him with a big shot,
16:39he'll take off.
16:40He had it.
16:40But don't get me wrong,
16:41he's a good boxer.
16:43But he certainly made him miss enough.
16:44Kosti Zou,
16:49who beat Jan Bergman,
16:51said Bergman is tough and smart.
16:53Zab is young,
16:54he hasn't caught it yet.
16:55There's a leaping knockdown,
16:56go Bergman.
16:58Judah's so quick,
16:59I don't think Bergman saw the punches they hit him.
17:01Five,
17:02six,
17:03first knockdown,
17:04first round,
17:05flash knockdown,
17:06Bergman up rather quickly.
17:09I think that was more of a trip going down.
17:11He did get hit,
17:12no question about it.
17:12Several punches,
17:14but,
17:14oh,
17:15he's got it just in.
17:16Judah,
17:17pulling it on,
17:18trying to end it here,
17:19in the first round.
17:20Push him off,
17:21push him off,
17:21that's it.
17:21He has nine first round knockouts,
17:25including the last two.
17:27Judah's very quick,
17:28the right hook is leaning right on the jawline.
17:30He's not missing with many of them.
17:31Boy,
17:32has he got a killer instinct.
17:34Ooh.
17:35Oh,
17:35wow.
17:37You can hear it all the way on the back row,
17:39and Bergman down for the second time.
17:41There's no three knockdown rule.
17:43That was a crisp,
17:45straight left hand,
17:46left cross to the temple,
17:47and Bergman straight to his knees.
17:48He comes running right after him.
17:52He runs into a left by Bergman.
17:55Bergman just trying to stay out of the way,
17:57and he is just flailing away like a wild man.
17:59Bergman took his shot away.
18:01He took two thunderous punches,
18:02but they missed.
18:04It did more harm to him than good.
18:06Forty seconds to survive for Bergman,
18:08who's already been down twice.
18:10Judah just teeing off.
18:14Right now Bergman's,
18:14he's trying to get his head together
18:16and block the shot,
18:17but what he really needs to do
18:18is just hold for a few seconds.
18:19Get some rest.
18:21Bergman,
18:21a human punching bag
18:23for Zab Judah.
18:24Oh,
18:24Zab Judah better take it easy.
18:27He's expending half his gas tank
18:28here on the first round.
18:29Boy,
18:30he's just going at it.
18:35Bergman on the retreat,
18:36trying to get his legs
18:37under him.
18:38Don't punch,
18:38don't punch.
18:39Step,
18:40step,
18:40step.
18:40He looks tased.
18:41Well,
18:42he probably has made it
18:43to the end of this round
18:44by luck.
18:45Bell,
18:45bell,
18:46bell,
18:46bell.
18:46This is just
18:47a matter of time
18:49as it appears.
18:51All right,
18:51that was,
18:52that was his base round.
18:53Give me the water.
18:56Give me the tail.
18:57Spit down.
18:58Well,
18:59that was certainly
18:59an exhibit
19:00of his skill.
19:05And he put down
19:06the line,
19:06slump,
19:06last.
19:08How we doing,
19:09Jan?
19:09Hey,
19:09man.
19:09Okay.
19:11We're going to take a look
19:11at the first knockdown.
19:13He's a little off bounce,
19:14but that right hook,
19:14you see the knee wobble,
19:16and he's sort of being chased.
19:17There's more of a trip there
19:18than a clean knockdown.
19:19He got wobbled.
19:21We'll take an overhead look.
19:22He got hit with a good right hook
19:23right there.
19:24You see the legs buckle,
19:25and his legs are not under him
19:26very well.
19:27He's retreating,
19:28and there is a slip.
19:29That's actually not a clean
19:30knockdown at all.
19:32But the second one
19:33appeared to be a whole lot better.
19:34It's a nice straight left hand
19:35right on top of the temple,
19:37and almost a hit
19:38after the knockdown.
19:39And he just got that hit clean,
19:42clean to the temple,
19:43and down he went.
19:44Judah hit it right on the butt,
19:46and he told us
19:47he has to get in close
19:48not to allow Bergman to run.
19:50Bergman has the reach
19:51and has the advantage
19:52of the outside.
19:53He said,
19:53I'll get in his chest,
19:54and that's pretty much
19:55what he has done.
19:57And Jan Bergman
19:58being urged on
19:59in his corner
19:59by former
20:00one-way contender
20:01Harold Volbrecht.
20:03You may remember that
20:03once lost to Mark Freeland,
20:05ironically,
20:06also from Brooklyn.
20:08And the Papino Aquinas
20:11who's a very good
20:12Mexican fighter
20:13before Chavez came out.
20:15Those were two title fights
20:16for Volbrecht.
20:17And now Zab Judah
20:18going for his first
20:19world title here.
20:23Ooh, nice.
20:24Nice left hook.
20:26And you know,
20:26right now,
20:27you wonder
20:28just how much energy
20:29he spent in the first round.
20:30I'm sure he didn't spend
20:30too much,
20:31but not really working
20:32too much to see
20:33if the challengers,
20:34well,
20:35they're both challengers actually,
20:36but to see if Bergman
20:37is still hurting.
20:38You're supposed to jump
20:39on him and test him.
20:40Now this is for
20:41the vacant
20:42IBF
20:43junior welterweight title.
20:45The interim champion
20:45is Zab Judah,
20:46the southpaw,
20:47now on the right
20:49of your screen.
20:53Well,
20:54Zab looks like
20:54he's got a whole
20:55ocean
20:56of self-confidence.
20:57I mean,
20:58he looks like
20:58he's just taking his time.
20:59He doesn't need
21:00to jump on him.
21:00He'll just work his
21:01weight until he finds him again.
21:03The round's almost
21:04half over
21:05and he hasn't
21:05really done anything.
21:06No,
21:07not even
21:07thrown anything hard.
21:10Why do you think,
21:11Bobby,
21:11that Judah,
21:11after that great success,
21:13knocking him down
21:14two times
21:15in the first round,
21:15didn't just
21:16close the gap
21:17and jump right on Berkey?
21:18We know
21:19there's a number
21:19of different things
21:20that could be going
21:20through his head.
21:21He could realize
21:21as I was about to say,
21:32he could be
21:32rethinking things
21:33and considering
21:34his opponent's
21:34a little tougher
21:35than he thought.
21:36And he was
21:37thinking about something
21:38and walked into that hurt.
21:40And walk into it,
21:41he did.
21:42He got up pretty fast.
21:43He didn't take
21:44any time on the canvas,
21:45but hey,
21:46it changed
21:47things in his mind.
21:49It ain't gonna be
21:49such an easy night.
21:50We advertised
21:51the prolific left hook
21:53of Jan Bergman
21:54and Zab Judah
21:55met it up close.
21:57About 50 seconds
21:58to go
21:59in round two.
22:00Zab Judah
22:00tasting the canvas
22:02for the first time
22:03in his career.
22:09Another bad left hook
22:11right hand.
22:12Bergman's starting
22:12to find the range
22:13a little bit.
22:14Zab not near as effective
22:15as he was in the first round.
22:17Not able to come through
22:18those long range yards.
22:19He's setting it up
22:20with a reasonable jab
22:21with Bergman.
22:22Judah is now
22:23toying with Bergman
22:25despite the fact
22:26that he was knocked down.
22:27Oh, a good right uppercut
22:28by Judah.
22:29And now,
22:29he jumps right on
22:31the South African again.
22:34Judah's got it all back.
22:35All kinds of energy
22:36pounding to the body
22:38with the left,
22:38reaching up high
22:39with the right,
22:40but missing.
22:42Good recovery here
22:43by Zab Judah
22:44after the flash knockdown.
22:46And shows the elusive
22:47defense as well
22:49as the bell sounds.
22:50Boy.
22:52Sit down.
22:54Listen to me.
22:54Listen to me.
22:55Let's put your head down.
22:56And listen to me.
22:57Don't play with this kid.
22:58You understand me?
22:58Give me the water.
22:59Give me the water.
23:00Don't play with this kid.
23:01Give me the water.
23:03Listen to me.
23:04Breathe.
23:05Breathe.
23:05Breathe.
23:06Take some water.
23:06Let's go.
23:07All right, Zab.
23:08No problem.
23:09Let's go.
23:10Don't play with this kid.
23:11You understand me?
23:11I want you to use your jab
23:12and take him, baby.
23:13Take him.
23:14You see anybody you want
23:15but keep your hands up.
23:16He's trying to posture.
23:17He's trying to get...
23:18Here we're going to see
23:19that left hook.
23:20He walks right into it
23:21and Bergman turns in
23:23beautifully just right on
23:24the button,
23:25just the way you draw it up.
23:26Judah comes back
23:31and he's...
23:32You know,
23:32you can see he's a little cocky.
23:33He throws a nice right uppercut
23:35and a left-hand right hook.
23:36He follows up
23:37and he hurts Bergman.
23:38At the end of that round,
23:39if the round were a little long,
23:40Bergman might have had
23:40some serious trouble.
23:42Well, you know,
23:43the lucky thing...
23:45Lucky thing for Bergman,
23:46he didn't drop me.
23:47That was a perfect punch
23:48and a perfect follow-up.
23:49As if somebody turned on
23:50the goal switch on Zab.
23:54Judah's got to be careful
23:55not to toy with this guy
23:57too much.
23:59He has a tendency to do that
24:00from time to time,
24:00to be too showboating.
24:02There it was costly.
24:03Absolutely.
24:03That's what they were saying
24:04to him in the corner
24:05where round two
24:06saw a change in momentum
24:08abruptly to Jan Bergman
24:10until the final 20 seconds
24:11when Judah got it back.
24:13I had the first round
24:1410-7 for Judah.
24:16Second round,
24:1610-8 for Bergman.
24:17He closed the gap right away.
24:20I had them both
24:2010-8 rounds.
24:22They're even on my scorecard.
24:24This is a very good fight
24:25except you get the feeling
24:28that Zab wants to turn it on.
24:30It's a completely different fight.
24:31When he's playing with him,
24:32it's one thing.
24:33But when he turns it on,
24:33he's in command.
24:35Judah's young and slick.
24:36Very talented, obviously.
24:38But what about
24:38the experience factor?
24:39How much does that
24:40play a role here?
24:42It depends on the quality
24:43of the experience
24:44that Bergman's had.
24:45He was in with a guy
24:45like Kostya Zou
24:46and he didn't make it
24:47to the final bell.
24:48So some of his experience
24:50was probably costly
24:51on both sides.
24:52Bergman's primary theme
24:54going in
24:54was that Judah
24:55was underestimating him
24:57just like he
24:58underestimated Kostya Zou
24:59back in 1996.
25:01He said the keys for him
25:02will be to pressure
25:04Zab Judah and box him.
25:07He said Judah
25:08doesn't do that
25:09much very long.
25:11That was a beautiful
25:11right hand left
25:12combination by Bergman.
25:14That's what he needs
25:14to do though.
25:15He needs to keep
25:15those punches
25:16at long range.
25:17Keep the jab
25:18in Judah's face
25:19because the jab is big.
25:21That was the best punch
25:22landed in the round
25:22and it landed solidly.
25:26Young Bergman coming on.
25:27He said,
25:27you might find me
25:28as fast as Judah
25:29is.
25:29You're going to be surprised
25:30as he said to us
25:31yesterday.
25:32That was a great
25:33body shot.
25:34Great body shot
25:35by Judah.
25:41Boy, Zab Judah
25:42after coming out
25:43blazing in that
25:44first round
25:45knocking Bergman
25:45down two times
25:46getting knocked
25:47down himself
25:48in the last round.
25:50About a minute
25:50to go in round three.
25:51Bergman has found
25:52the combination
25:53that's starting
25:53to work for him.
25:54It's a lead right
25:54hand followed
25:55by a hook.
25:56He's hit Judah
25:56with three successive
25:58times.
25:58And there it went
25:59just in the end.
26:00It didn't land
26:00but it was there.
26:01Same thing.
26:05Bergman had surgery
26:06on that left hand
26:07in December
26:08but he got the
26:09doctors okay.
26:10Bergman said
26:11it's not a factor.
26:13Nice counter
26:14overhand left
26:15by Judah just now
26:15rocked Bergman
26:16a little bit.
26:17It did rock him.
26:18He had a different
26:19expression in his face
26:20when he went back.
26:21He had a different
26:21expression in his legs
26:22too.
26:23Yeah, right.
26:24Judah moving forward
26:26pressing the attack.
26:28Bergman continues
26:29to backpedal.
26:30Judah with a left
26:31hand there
26:32that just
26:32raised Bergman.
26:34Bergman missed
26:34with that right.
26:36Judah has some
26:36heavy hands.
26:37It seems like
26:38everywhere he punches
26:38he hurts.
26:39That body shot
26:40just changed
26:41things around
26:41a little while ago
26:42now.
26:42The other shot
26:43got his attention
26:44got him running.
26:44heardミック.
26:57Heudiths.
26:58Ah, the idea.
26:59Heudiths.
27:00Heudiths.
27:02I'm here.
27:02You got to keep on moving, okay, you're springing, right after you jab, jab, jab,
27:13man, stay, stay, stay, man, when you don't throw him for the right-handed, okay?
27:17Give me one up, give me one up.
27:21He's wide open, wide open for the left hook.
27:23You're doing good now.
27:24Keep your hands up, don't give him nothing, though.
27:26He's trying to land anything.
27:29Every time you hit him, you heard him.
27:31You know what I'm saying?
27:31Hey, relax.
27:33Breathe, relax.
27:33You're in good shape.
27:34It's your show.
27:35Come on.
27:36Don't give him nothing.
27:41Don't give him nothing.
27:41Nothing.
27:45A slightly slower pace in the last round, round three.
27:51Both fighters maintaining more of a gap in the start of round number four here at the Mohegan
27:56Sun Casino in Uncasville, Connecticut.
28:00This is for the IBF Junior Weatherway Championship.
28:02It has been an intriguing fight to this point.
28:06The first round, clearly, all due to the second round.
28:09We saw a little more domination by Bergman.
28:11Third round was a much, much closer round.
28:14A little bit Judah's way.
28:15Hey, this should be this round and maybe the next, if there is another round, should set
28:19the pace where this fight heads.
28:21And as Costas Jesus said, Bergman is smart and tough, and he has the experience factor
28:26going against the 22-year-old southpaw, Judah.
28:29He's getting the impression that if he just turned the juice on Zav and told him, go ahead and take
28:36this guy out, it would be a different round because he's starting out very cautious.
28:41It didn't warm up until the end.
28:42Jump on him right off the bat and let's see what happens.
28:44Winner has to fight the mandatory.
28:48Teron Millett by August 12th.
28:51They certainly aren't thinking about that right now.
28:58Bergman missing with that overhand right.
29:00It's so tough to hit, Judah.
29:03He's so quick defensively, like right there.
29:08He's got Pernell Whitaker's radar.
29:10He just seems to know how to avoid punches, just moving his body a fraction.
29:14It's a beautiful thing to see when you've got that.
29:17They say he's sweet pea with a bigger punch, more offensive-minded.
29:24Of course, Pernell Whitaker, six world titles and three different weights.
29:28Hard to improve on that.
29:30He's got a counter punch, more.
29:33He's got to start getting excited again as Judah.
29:37He lets him miss his punches, but then he didn't come back when I think.
29:40No good.
29:41He's got to come back when he misses.
29:48Got a minute to go in round four.
29:52This will do nothing around because Bergman's not trying to fight here.
29:55Oh, it's a nice hand followed by a combination to the head by Judah.
29:59Oh, older Bergman.
30:01And he is in trouble.
30:03He butted up.
30:04He's looking at him saying, hey, wait.
30:06He's tripping over his feet.
30:08Another left hand.
30:08Straight left by Judah, who's talking Bergman now.
30:11Bergman's legs, Steve.
30:12They don't look like they're under him well.
30:14Sturdy legs.
30:15Very wobbly.
30:16Sturdy as he backpedals away from Zab Judah.
30:21Judah with an uppercut.
30:22He just huddles him to the head.
30:24Oh, over him.
30:25Steve Snogger.
30:25The rock watching closely.
30:27Down he goes.
30:28Get over there.
30:29Third knockdown of the fight for Judah.
30:32He may just stay down.
30:33He looks like he doesn't want to get up.
30:35Oh, he strikes out there like Fern.
30:37Oh, that's it.
30:39A real exercise.
30:40Over.
30:41Well, statement was made.
30:44And Zab Judah has won his first world championship.
30:48He's the IBF junior waterway champion of the world.
30:52Well, he came here to make a statement, to win a title,
30:55and to prove that he's sweeping with a comeback to life with a punch.
30:59Well, he's got my vote.
31:00He's got a punch.
31:01He can take over.
31:02And the day's look on the face of Jan Bergman.
31:07But the celebration begins over on the Zab Judah side of the ring.
31:13And now he parades around the ring with the new belt.
31:16Gets down on his knees and does some praying.
31:18A member of the Jewish faith, Zab Judah,
31:21knockout unofficially 250 round four.
31:24Zab Judah goes to 22-0.
31:32One no contest with 17 knockouts.
31:35He put Bergman on the canvas three times.
31:40To the victory.
31:43Didn't take Judah very long, did it?
31:45A world champion at just 22.
31:47And he's the fourth member of the 96 Olympic team to win a world title.
31:55See, he's so sneaky.
31:56His defense is so good.
31:57And what he does is he jumps in with shots.
31:59There's a nice uppercut that misses.
32:01He lands a couple of body shots and then turns up.
32:04And he hits Bergman with some uppercuts that snap his head.
32:08And once he gets him, he just cleans up on him.
32:10He's so quick.
32:10There's one of the uppercuts that caught him cleaning the jaw.
32:16And basically, he's just in a passive position.
32:17Just his hands up, hiding.
32:20Put his head between his legs.
32:21The plane is going to crash.
32:23And it did.
32:24And we're going to be seeing a lot more of this young man, Zab Judah, in the near future.
32:27He joins David Reed, Floyd Mayweather, and Fernando Vargas as champions who are on that 96 Olympic team.
32:35Judah was an alternate.
32:36One more look.
32:37There's the left uppercut that started the wobbling.
32:40Got his head a little foggy.
32:42And Judah just really tees off on him.
32:44He punches right through the gloves, around the gloves, nonstop barrage until Bergman decides to take a seat and stay there.
32:51Well, he must make his first defense versus number one contender, mandatory challenger Teron Millett by August 12th.
32:57He wants to stay busy, he told us.
33:00Mentioned Hector Camacho Jr. as a possibility.
33:02He sets up some very attractive future possibilities for title unification.
33:07Shambay Mitchell, of course.
33:08Kostya Zou.
33:10Randall Bailey.
33:12Should be a lot of fun.
33:13Fight fans' delights.
33:14We're set for the official announcement.
33:16Let's get it up to our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon Jr.
33:19Ladies and gentlemen, we have the time of two minutes, 40 seconds in round number four.
33:25Our referee in charge, Steve Smoker, reaches the count of ten.
33:29He's the winner by way of knockout.
33:31Still undefeated.
33:33Now the IVF Junior Welterweight Champion of the World.
33:37And proving true to his nickname, Zab.
33:41Super Juna.
33:44Super Juna.
33:44So the newest member of the Showtime boxing family, Zab Juna, is victorious in emphatic fashion.
33:56A fourth-round knockout over Jan Bergman.
34:00And there he is.
34:01Zab Juna out of Brownsville, Brooklyn.
34:04The same neighborhood that produced former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
34:09In fact, he is a protege of Mike Tyson's.
34:12Coming up next, our main event, the WVC Super Lightweight Championship.
34:18Kostya Zou defends his title against number five contender, Ahmed Santos.
34:23Take you into the dressing room with the champion, Kostya Zou.
34:28Came over from Russia to Australia in 91 as an amateur.
34:32The year he won the World Championship, fell in love with the country.
34:35And with the former Soviet Union breaking up, he passed on the 92 Olympics.
34:39In order to settle in Sydney, in turn, Pro brought his wife, Natasha, his two sons, mother, father, and sister to live in Australia.
34:47Now an Australian citizen, even speaks with a hint of an Aussie accent.
34:53Kostya Zou coming up in our main event a little bit later tonight against Ahmed Santos of Mexico.
34:59We're set for post-fight reaction now from our opening bout.
35:02Let's go to the fight, Dr. Freddy Pacheco in the ring.
35:04Very impressive opening.
35:06You look just like Sweet Beak, except you got dropped.
35:09Like, what happened with the dropping?
35:11I'm going to tell you right now, yo, he gave me a good fake.
35:15He faked it right here and threw the hook.
35:17Caught me.
35:18I mean, I understand why I'm a champion, man.
35:19I can jump people.
35:20I belong in a pound for poundless.
35:21You know what I'm saying?
35:22I went up against a guy.
35:23I got my head right.
35:24I got focused.
35:25And I went right at him to come out.
35:26All right.
35:26With the magic of television, we're going to show you the knockdown.
35:30Yeah, let me see that.
35:31How you got hit.
35:32I got hit.
35:32Now, let's take it slow.
35:34You talk.
35:34Now, I got hit.
35:36Yeah, with the left hook.
35:37Left hook right on the chest.
35:38Yeah.
35:39He caught me a little hook.
35:40I mean, come on, man.
35:41I'm a soldier.
35:42I laughed at him.
35:43Come on.
35:43I mean, look, look.
35:44Here's your rally at the end of the fight.
35:46Boom.
35:46Boom.
35:47Boom.
35:48It's a good body shot.
35:49Boom.
35:50Boom.
35:51Boom.
35:52Boom.
35:52Boom.
35:53He should be stopping.
35:53I'm not stopping.
35:54I'm never going to stop until it's over.
35:56And it should have been stopped, and it was.
35:57I'm a hot boy.
35:59Hot boy.
36:00Yeah.
36:01You know?
36:02That's right, baby.
36:04We do that thing for real.
36:05I want to say peace and love to everybody in Brooklyn.
36:07Everywhere.
36:08Some people out there, shout out.
36:09Everybody out there, shout out.
36:10Love y'all.
36:11Florida.
36:12New Orleans.
36:13What up, baby?
36:13All right.
36:14We got next name is Lou Duvall, who's had so many champions you can't remember them all.
36:19Where are we going with this guy?
36:20Where are we going with this guy, Lou?
36:21Well, I think Shelly and I are going to sit down and look at the map out of his career,
36:25but we thought we were seeing another Pernod Whittaker down there, even when he got dropped,
36:28but he came back up and knocked him out just like a Pernod Whittaker.
36:30Well, you weren't worried a minute when he got dropped.
36:32You only stayed down a half fraction of a second.
36:33I still was worried about it.
36:35Don't worry about that.
36:36But it's a great fight.
36:37Shelly, is it safe to say this is another big star in the rising?
36:40No doubt.
36:40He is a star in every way.
36:42No doubt.
36:43All right.
36:44Star in every way.
36:45Where are you going from here, star in every way?
36:47Zoo, baby.
36:48Let's ride, baby.
36:49Come on, let's get it on.
36:50You know what I'm saying?
36:51You're the best.
36:51I'm the best.
36:52Look, y'all let me in the door now.
36:54Okay, I reloaded.
36:58Irrepressible.
36:59An irrepressible new young talent.
37:02Let's go back to Steve Albert at ringside.
37:06Thanks very much, Ferdy.
37:07Now, there is a man who loves his job.
37:10Not talking about Ferdy, talking about Zab Judah.
37:14Let's check the online scoring results from our opening bout, Judah versus Bergman.
37:17And the folks at home had it all even before the conclusion of the match, two and two.
37:25So despite the first time he was ever knocked down in his pro career, Zab Judah able to come back and put Bergman away in round four.
37:32If you took part, we thank you for your participation.
37:33The online voting will continue with the start of our main event.
37:38Steve Albert back with Bobby Chez.
37:40Well, things looking very rosy.
37:42The future looking bright for young 22-year-old Southpaw sensation Zab Judah.
37:47This is a guy who's good, and he knows it.
37:50Well, yeah, he knows it, and he'll be the first one to tell you.
37:52But he is good.
37:53He can back it up.
37:53He talks the talk real well, but he walks it just as good.
37:56How far can this guy conceivably go in his career?
37:59Well, you know, it's hard to say.
38:00Right now, his division is probably the best talent for talent with the champion.
38:04So he could do a round robin with any one of them, and it would be a great set of fights.
38:08All right, let's take a look at some of the action as we go inside the ropes with Bobby Chez right now
38:14and dissect Zab Judah a little further.
38:16Well, we're going to show you here.
38:17He gets Bergman in trouble to knock down.
38:19That was the one that was, he wobbled him, but it was more of a slip toward the end and a push.
38:23And here, Judah tastes a little bit of the canvas.
38:27Walking into a nice left hook.
38:28And here's the end of the fight.
38:30He just beats him literally to the floor, as I said before.
38:33Put his head between his legs and he crashes it.
38:35Get over there.
38:38You get the feeling he's a guy who is very passionate about his job.
38:41It's not just to make a buck.
38:43He loves what he does.
38:44He really loves what he does.
38:45I know the feeling was there once for himself.
38:47Absolutely, yes.
38:48All right, so that wraps up coverage of our co-feature this evening, Zab Judah versus Jan Bergman.
38:52You get the feeling we're going to be hearing a lot more about the new IBF junior weatherweight champ,
38:56Zab Judah, in the very near future.
39:00Now, before we get to our main event, a moment to pay our respects to Hall of Famer Bojack,
39:05who passed away earlier this week at 78.
39:08He was a heavyweight among lightweights.
39:09In the division's glory years, the 1940s, Bojack, whose real name was Sidney Walker,
39:14was a headliner at Madison Square Garden 21 times, which remains a record attribute to his exciting style.
39:19Following his storied career, he ran a shoeshine concession at the Fountain Blue Hotel in Miami Beach,
39:25trained fighters at the fabled Fifth Street Gym.
39:27The old garden, hotel, and gym are all gone now, but Bojack's legacy will live on.
39:33Boxing World also recently lost former super middleweight champ Steve Little at the age of 34.
39:38Our condolences to his family.
39:41Well, it's one down, two to go tonight.
39:44We're coming to you.
