00:00Now let's just stop from 100 and see what the brake and tyre package is like.
00:07Like a violent shudder on that front there. That was not very nice.
00:12How quick does it go in reverse? Here we go.
00:16The acceleration in reverse. Like rips your face off.
00:21G'day, I'm Paul. Havel H6 GT. We reviewed it a little while back and I thought it was a fun little car.
00:27It's got a raspy exhaust note and a bit of fun to drive as well.
00:30Well, now we have this in Australia. This is the H6 GT, but it's the plug-in hybrid.
00:36And we're talking about 0 to 100, or claim 0 to 100 times of under 5 seconds, which is pretty impressive.
00:41So this is a step up in price over the regular internal combustion version, but it is still priced at under $55,000 drive away,
00:49which I think is pretty good value for money for what you're getting.
00:51And I'll run you through those specs pretty soon.
00:53Today we're going to do a detailed review of this.
00:55So if you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this video, you can use the time codes that are on the screen,
00:59or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
01:03Now let's talk about design. And I love this colour they've fitted to this particular car.
01:06It just looks very stylish and high-end on the road.
01:09When you see these, like if you didn't know what this was, you would assume this was some European car.
01:14It is just a very good-looking vehicle that doesn't have some of those funny styling elements you see in other products from China,
01:21like the GWM Aura.
01:22I just think it's a bit of an awkward-looking car, whereas this actually looks pretty good.
01:25So full LED headlights, fog lights down here.
01:28You've got this faux carbon down the bottom that is continued inside the cabin as well.
01:32Around the side here, you've got a set of alloy wheels with a piano black finish on 19-inch alloys,
01:38and Michelin Primacy tyres. So it should be pretty decent for this.
01:42It is wet today, unfortunately, and like this, our ride and handling track is literally like ice.
01:48Sean was skating on it before, and I'll be interested to see how that goes.
01:52And then you've got wheel large guards there as well.
01:54This is an all-wheel drive by virtue of the fact that it is the plug-in hybrid variant,
01:59but it doesn't have a traditional driveline running down the centre of the car.
02:02So I'll be curious to see how that interacts, because sometimes with these systems,
02:06they just plumb a heap of torque on the front axle, and it just gets a bit unruly.
02:10So we'll see what that's like.
02:12Indicator and camera built into the wing mirror there.
02:15You've got this side arch that runs down the side here with this sort of canard-style thing for aero.
02:22Seen something similar fitted to the Jolly-On as well as just a styling thing.
02:26I don't know that it actually does anything.
02:28Privacy glass. Roof rails. You've got a glass sunroof there as well.
02:31Have a look at this spoiler. That is pretty fancy.
02:34So, a bit of downforce on the rear, and then come around to the back with me.
02:37Around the back, full LED taillights. Toyota, you could learn something from that.
02:41A GW-M badge, all blacked out there with P-Hev and then H6 GT over here,
02:47and another boot-lip spoiler as well.
02:49The H6 GT also has that cut-off profile.
02:52It's not a full sort of SUV like the regular H6.
02:54It sort of has that sportier back to it.
02:56So let me know what you reckon about the pricing in the comments section below.
02:59What do you think about the design as well? Do you think it looks good?
03:02Let me know your thoughts down there.
03:03So, we're inside the H6. This is what the key looks like.
03:06You've got panic, lock, boot, unlock, and then Havel on the back there.
03:13It is a proximity-sensing key, so you can leave that in your pocket.
03:16Once you're inside, you've got a push-button start just over here.
03:18So, in terms of presentation of the interior, it looks really nice to me.
03:22For that sort of price bracket around the sort of mid $50,000 mark.
03:25I don't know, it just feels, looks and feels really nice.
03:27So, you're paying for battery tech here, really.
03:30I mean, it's an enormous battery to have in a car like this.
03:32So, that's where all the money is getting sunk into it.
03:35But it still feels quite nice inside the cabin as well.
03:39One thing I don't love, and I'll talk about this a bit more when we go for a drive,
03:41is just the feel of the steering wheel while you're driving.
03:44But I'll go into a bit more detail on that later on.
03:47In terms of your touch points, you've got like this sort of faux Alcantara material here in the centre and on the seats as well.
03:52Nice and soft to the touch, soft on the doors as well.
03:55How soft is it?
03:56Well, we've got our durometer.
03:57We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
04:00If you do want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before, there's a link in the description below.
04:05Builds quality.
04:06This all feels really nice and solid.
04:09Do you own one of these?
04:10What's it been like in terms of builds quality?
04:13It's what the door slam sounds like.
04:18Now, let's talk about infotainment.
04:20So you have a 12.3-inch infotainment display, 10.25-inch display ahead of the driver.
04:26The infotainment isn't too bad.
04:27When we were at the Shanghai Motor Show last week or the week before, they launched, they call it Coffee Intelligence,
04:34is their sort of AI system for their interiors.
04:37There's a new version of that coming.
04:38That debuts a new infotainment system.
04:40So this sort of works perfectly fine, but it'll be nice to see what the updated version of that comes like.
04:46So you've got all your sort of main pillars there, but then you can swipe down from the top there to access your shortcuts
04:51and also assign different shortcuts as well, which is pretty good.
04:55AM, FM radio with an eight-speaker sound system.
04:59Sound system's fine.
05:00It's nothing too crazy.
05:01It does have this voice recognition feature, so you can basically ask the car to do all sorts of things,
05:06like turning the heater up and down, heated seats on.
05:08So a handy feature to have, and it's good that it's there because aside from these buttons down here,
05:13everything is operated through this screen.
05:15And if you're in CarPlay, for example, it's got wired Apple CarPlay, it's sort of, you can't really do anything.
05:22And then you've got to go all the way back to the main screen to then access the car's functions.
05:27So a little bit frustrating that they have that.
05:29I think I would prefer to just have some buttons that get you back to that main screen a little bit faster
05:34if you are inside your smartphone mirroring.
05:37Then ahead of the driver, the display kind of gives you a variety of information.
05:40And here, because it's a plug-in hybrid, you've got battery details, you've got the regen status.
05:45So there's a fair bit of sort of information to work with there.
05:48And head-up display as well, which is a nice little feature to have.
05:51So in terms of parking, you've got front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
05:55I'll show you what that looks like in terms of quality.
05:57There it is there, the quality is actually pretty good.
05:59And then you've got a number of different angles to pick from there as well.
06:04So actually, the quality is okay.
06:06There's some parts of that that don't look great.
06:08You've got the saved reversing assistant as well.
06:10If you go down like a narrow one-way street, car wash view, semi-autonomous parking as well.
06:17A bit of stuff there to play with.
06:19And this is what the horn sounds like.
06:23Let's chat.
06:24Practicality and connectivity.
06:25So you've got wireless phone charger up the top here.
06:28You have one USB-A port down that side.
06:32You've got another USB-A port on this side and a 12-volt outlet.
06:36You do have USB up the top there for a dash cam as well.
06:40Sunny's holder up here.
06:41You've got ample storage in the center with a quite reasonably sized center console there too.
06:47Let's look at the glove box.
06:48Glove box is reasonably sized as well.
06:51So not bad in terms of storage here.
06:52Then on the comfort front, you've got dual-zone automatic climate control.
06:56You also have heated and cooled seats as well for the front row.
07:00In terms of the seat comfort, yeah, look, the seats are okay.
07:03It's just, yeah.
07:05Again, I'll go over this when we go driving.
07:07But I just can't find a comfortable position because you can lift the back of the seat electrically.
07:11You can't lift the front.
07:12Remove the backrest.
07:13You have lumbar adjustment as well.
07:15And your passenger is electrically adjustable too.
07:17But I don't know.
07:19You just can't find a comfortable steering position and seating position.
07:23And steering offers both tilt and reach adjustment.
07:25And on our reach test, all that stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
07:29So second row, have a look at this.
07:31Decent amount of knee room.
07:32That's with my seat pretty far back.
07:34Tow room is excellent.
07:35Headroom is really good as well.
07:36There's no compromise here in terms of space inside the cabin, even with a 35-odd kilowatt-hour battery.
07:43So I've actually done really well with that.
07:44A lot of electric cars, because the batteries are so large and they sit under the floor,
07:49you basically have no tow room, whereas this is quite a good setup there in terms of space.
07:53And almost a flat load floor there as well.
07:56Air vents here, two USB ports as well.
07:59You've got centre armrest here with a pair of cup holders there too.
08:03It's just a nice place to be seated.
08:05Window, does it go all the way down?
08:07Let's find out.
08:08So it's auto up and down.
08:10So close.
08:12So cargo space, you have a power tailgate.
08:16And you've got around 400 litres to work with here.
08:19Unfortunately, it's just one of the side effects of the plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
08:24You've got spot over there for the cable.
08:26And then if you get this out of the way, no spare tyre either.
08:28You've got a tyre repair kit.
08:30This is where your inverter is.
08:31So a bit of storage space is taken up by this little guy as well.
08:35So it's not the end of the world, but you just don't get the same sort of space that you would if this was the non-plug-in hybrid.
08:42And then in terms of putting the suitcase in there, you still have a bit of space to work around with,
08:47but just not an enormous amount.
08:49And you can expand the space a bit by dropping the second row out of the way.
08:55And that gives you over 1,000 litres to work with.
08:57Now, before we go for a drive, let's talk about battery and charging.
09:01So you have a battery that is almost 40 kilowatt hours in capacity, which is huge for a plug-in hybrid.
09:06But in a vehicle this shape as well, it means you're getting just under 200 kilometres worth of driving range on the fairly lenient NEDC cycle.
09:13But if you do translate that to real-world conditions, it's over 100 kilometres of real-world driving, which is pretty good.
09:19AC charging, single phase.
09:21And then DC charging, up to around 50 kilowatts.
09:24So it's going to mean that you can actually charge this fairly quickly if you are on an outdoor fast charger.
09:29So very impressive specs there.
09:31The battery chemistry is NCM as well.
09:33Okay, we've just hit the road in the Havill H6 GT plug-in hybrid.
09:42Now, this is a fascinating setup because they kind of do away with traditional all-wheel drive systems in a vehicle like this
09:49by putting an internal combustion engine up the front.
09:52It's a one-and-a-half litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol.
09:55It alone makes around 110 kilowatts of power.
09:58So it's not an enormous engine.
09:59And then that engine mates to three electric motors.
10:02So two on the front axle, one on the rear, that make around 135 kilowatts of power.
10:06So that gives you a combined system output of over 300 kilowatts of power and almost 800 newton metres of torque.
10:13And from behind the wheel, you give it a punch.
10:15And it really does sort of shove you back in the seat.
10:19So, yeah, it is really impressive in terms of the pick-up-and-go.
10:23It's lag-free.
10:24Like, you sort of just get stuck into it and it's ready to go immediately.
10:27It's not one of those systems where you're going to wait for stuff to happen.
10:30And it really just gets up and moves.
10:32So from that point of view, they've done a really good job with this.
10:34Now, in terms of combined fuel economy, I'll just kind of ignore the figures that they offer up.
10:39Because ultimately, the combined fuel economy really relies on the battery being full and you doing a specific cycle in a plug-in hybrid.
10:48Whereas the actual economy that we're getting here is around just over six litres per 100 k's.
10:54And that includes the battery being exhausted and the vehicle running.
10:57And that is a pretty realistic scenario if you are doing longer distance drives.
11:01And you've got to keep in mind as well that this is capable of doing over 100 kilometres with just the battery system alone.
11:08And then if you combine that with the internal combustion engine, it can do around 1,000 kilometres, which is a lot of range for a vehicle this size.
11:16So it is pretty impressive from that front.
11:18The fascinating thing with this package as well, I've seen this used on other GWM products, is that it uses a two-speed hybrid transmission.
11:27And in those other products, it doesn't really work that well.
11:29But here, it actually works really well.
11:31If I stay in that, it sort of grabs the next gear, but it keeps propelling you.
11:37It doesn't really sort of pause.
11:38So they have fixed that issue where you've got to just wait until it grabs the next gear and does anything.
11:44So from that point of view, I think they've done a decent job with that transmission.
11:49And once you sort a transmission like that out, it just makes this feel like an electric car.
11:53Like there is no noticeable transition between the internal combustion engine and the electric system.
11:59So from that point of view, it's good.
12:00You can also change the way that the hybrid system actually interacts.
12:05So what you can do is lock it into EV mode.
12:08When it is in EV mode, it's just using the battery system.
12:11And it gives you a really decent response.
12:13Like I'm sort of almost full throttle there.
12:15It's pinning me back in the seat really nicely.
12:17It doesn't kick the internal combustion engine on, and it just stays in electric mode.
12:21If I go to EV priority, it'll basically stay in electric mode.
12:25But if I do sort of sink the boot in, the internal combustion engine will flick on there to give it a bit more assistance.
12:33And an intelligent hybrid, it'll move between those two modes.
12:36And in all of those modes as well, it has a level of regen.
12:39So you can actually see here when I roll out of the throttle, it gives me the percentage of regen it's applying and then plumbing energy back into the battery.
12:46So really well-sorted system.
12:47But I think that brake pedal feel just needs a bit of work done to it because the brakes feel strong once you step on them.
12:53There just isn't that feel through the pedal.
12:55Let's talk about the ride.
12:56So the ride is actually quite comfortable.
12:58For a sportier car, you would expect it to be quite firm.
13:01But it is fairly soft.
13:03So when you're in and around the city hitting bumps and potholes and that sort of stuff, it feels pretty subdued and nice.
13:08I suspect when we go for a bit of a faster drive, it might feel a little unruly because it does feel quite sort of floaty.
13:14And a lot of that will come back to the amount of mass this vehicle is carrying and making it try and feel a little lighter than it is.
13:22You dial in a bit of softness, but that'll affect it when it comes to handling.
13:26Now, let's see what the body control's like.
13:28We're going to jack the speed up to 130.
13:30Unfortunately, it is very wet out there today.
13:33So it'll be interesting to see how we go when the speed picks up.
13:36But 130, maximum speed limit in Australia.
13:40And our sine waves here give us a good indication of what body control is like when speed picks up.
13:46You've got to keep in mind as well that...
13:48Oh, yeah, that's fairly floaty.
13:51You've got to keep in mind as well that GWM has just hired Rob Tribbiani, who was the former ride and handling chief of Holden.
13:57So it'll be interesting to see what he does with this because this is an interesting proposition.
14:02It's a heavier vehicle, so there's a lot of mass to work with.
14:05And it's very quick, so you've got a couple of complications there to make it handle.
14:09So we'll see what he puts together in the final tune.
14:13Now, rough road time.
14:14So we do this at 90km an hour.
14:17Gives us an indication of what the suspension is like on a shocker of a road.
14:21And we have a condensed sine wave in there as well.
14:24So there's 90km an hour.
14:28Actually feels really quite comfortable.
14:30See what it's like over these condensed sine waves.
14:33See if it still has that body control.
14:37Actually feels really good.
14:39They've done a good job with that.
14:40They've tuned the ride really nicely.
14:42It's not sort of too firm.
14:43It's quite sort of comfortable over this type of choppy terrain.
14:46Okay, so in terms of drive modes, you've got normal, eco, sport, snow, all-wheel drive, mud, sand.
14:55Let's go to sport.
14:56Like I said, it is very wet out there today.
14:58So we'll see how this goes.
15:00But my goodness, it pins you back in the seat.
15:03We'll see how it goes around the ride and handling track.
15:06Yeah, first turn here is sketchy as so.
15:11So we can actually get around there.
15:13Yeah, a little bit of understeer there.
15:23Yeah, it's probably just a little bit sketchy for faster driving.
15:26What I did notice there though is that, yeah, and there it goes again.
15:30It goes straight to understeer here in the wet when you apply the throttle because it's unleashing all of that torque on the front axle before it makes the rear axle do anything.
15:41So I think this is obviously the worst of the conditions for this car in terms of the road surface.
15:50But it is exhibiting one of the flaws there that it isn't tuned very well.
15:55And it just ends up being very twitchy out of these corners.
15:58Because brake pedal feel also isn't very good.
16:01It's just quite numb.
16:02It doesn't have a great deal of feedback.
16:05So, yeah, I think there's probably a bit of tuning work to be done here.
16:09So if you just plow on the throttle there, it doesn't really manage that wheel slip.
16:13The biggest issue as well is that in a vehicle like this that has those electric motors that sort of flare up really quickly,
16:19by the time it spins up, like here on the back straight, if I just sort of stay in this, it is moving along at a really impressive pace.
16:29But, yeah, one of the biggest issues here is that once the motor spins up really fast,
16:34by the time it realises it is spinning up really fast and you let off the throttle,
16:40it still has a lot of momentum going and it takes a little while for it to slow back down.
16:44So I think the tuning work that needs to be done here is around the way that it deploys that torque when you do jump on the throttle.
16:50It needs to be able to give you the punch on the front axle,
16:52but it really does need to send some of that to the rear so that it just feels nice and stable out of a corner.
16:57I think that, you know, the mix of quite soft suspension and that sort of little unruly set up there with throttle response
17:05just needs a bit of work, especially here in the wet.
17:08I think in the dry it would be much better, but you're not always going to get those conditions.
17:11And if you do just jump on the throttle out of a corner,
17:14it is going to feel a little bit sketchy until the system sorts itself out.
17:18Now let's talk about road noise.
17:19So course trip road, highway speed, you do get some noise coming into the cabin.
17:23It's not overly refined.
17:25There is wind noise as well, but today it is so windy out there.
17:29So I think a lot of that is just because it is actually quite windy outside,
17:33as opposed to this not having that decent wind buffeting insulation.
17:37We put it up against our calibrated sound meter and this is how it went.
17:41If you do want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before,
17:44there's a link in the description below.
17:46Now visibility.
17:47I can see clearly down the front there, we've got a great head-up display,
17:50big wing mirrors, and visibility out the rear isn't amazing.
17:53It's quite a sort of narrow envelope there.
17:55This could definitely do with one of those digital rear view mirrors,
17:58just to help sort of sit out in the back,
17:59especially if you have someone in that centre seat.
18:02One thing I'm just really struggling to gel with here is this seating position.
18:05I can't lift the front of the seat,
18:07and as a result of that, I kind of feel like I'm sort of sliding out of the seat.
18:10And this steering wheel just sits on a bit of an angle like that,
18:14so you just constantly have it digging into your palms here.
18:17You just can't hold it comfortably.
18:19It's really weird.
18:20Even though it does have sort of tilt and reach adjustment,
18:23I just can't get a comfortable grip on it,
18:25which I just think they need to improve.
18:27I've found this on a couple of their other cars as well.
18:29Okay, so it's time to test the semi-autonomous systems.
18:32We do this at 70km an hour on the bowl to see what the lane centering system is like,
18:36and then how it performs on the three outer lanes.
18:39It gets progressively harder when we get to the outermost lane.
18:42So I'll switch this on.
18:4570km an hour.
18:47Okay, lane centering is active.
18:50So doing a reasonable job in this first lane.
18:53It is veering a little bit to the left there.
18:55Jump over to the next lane.
18:57Okay, steering wheel is green.
19:04Same thing.
19:05It really is just getting a little close for comfort to that left-hand side.
19:11Jump up all the way to the top.
19:15See how it goes up here.
19:21Waiting for that to activate.
19:23Doesn't look like it'll activate up here.
19:29Okay, so first two lanes, it was okay, but not amazing.
19:33And I think if I was driving next to a truck or something, I'd probably disable it because I wouldn't have been confident in it actually sort of holding itself well enough within the lane.
19:42Okay, time to do a little bit of performance testing.
19:45So the claim is 0 to 100 in 4.9.
19:48So we'll test that out today.
19:49We'll go all the way through to 120.
19:51Just a reminder, it is wet out there, unfortunately.
19:54I will switch off stability control just in case we get some wheels slip off the line there.
20:00Turn that off.
20:01Pop this into sport mode.
20:03It has launch control, which is pretty cool.
20:05So just brake and throttle.
20:07It'll come up with a message there, and then we'll see how it goes.
20:19That is quick.
20:20It was sitting up like that waiting for us.
20:23That's unreal.
20:23Okay.
20:25There's 120.
20:26Actually felt really good.
20:28All right.
20:29Okey-dokey.
20:29So 0 to 100, 5.18 seconds.
20:33There was a little bit of wheel slip off the line there.
20:35So I think it would easily achieve 4.9 on a dry road.
20:3880 to 120, 3.44 seconds.
20:40That's really impressive as well.
20:42It just means that it has that mid-range to get up and move.
20:45So, yeah, very impressed with that.
20:47Now let's do a stop from 100 and see what the brake and tyre package is like.
20:51A little bit damp still.
20:52So we'll see how this goes.
20:54Here we go.
20:54Like a violent shudder on that front there.
21:01That was not very nice.
21:04So that is 2.89 seconds, 38.98 metres.
21:09We'll do one more stop just to see what was going on there.
21:13That was a little bit strange.
21:14So we'll go give that one more crack.
21:15So I think what's happening there, basically, and you see this happen when an electric motor
21:26is spinning up really quickly and the traction control bites.
21:29You just get this shunt through the driveline as it sort of stops it spinning up.
21:33I think what's happening there is as you go from throttle to brake, it goes into regen briefly.
21:39So you're then applying a load to that electric motor.
21:41But then when you hit the brakes, it's then basically stopping that electric motor suddenly
21:45as well.
21:46So, yeah, it stops well.
21:49Like that stopping distance is good, but it just doesn't feel all that reassuring from
21:53behind the wheel.
21:54So, yeah.
21:55Do you want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before?
21:57There's a link in the description below that'll take you to our database of numbers,
22:01and you can see how they all perform up against each other.
22:04Now, how quick does it go in reverse?
22:05Here we go.
22:06Oh, the acceleration in reverse, like, rips your face off, but top speed of 45 kilometres
22:15an hour.
22:16So, the Havel H6 plug-in hybrid, what do we think?
22:20Look, I actually think it's a heap of fun.
22:22It gives you, like, ridiculous acceleration in a straight line.
22:26It's just the handling dynamics that need to be sorted, and that's going to be a mixture
22:30of the ride and the handling component, but it's also going to be a mixture of the way
22:33they deliver torque to the electric motors.
22:36I think that just needs to be refined a little bit, because in the wet here, as we discovered
22:39today, it's just a bit of a handful, and I don't think people really need that.
22:42So, it is incredible value for money.
22:44It gives you lots of driving range and the ability to drive without having to switch the
22:47engine on if you're just doing shorter distances to and from work and stuff.
22:51So, from that point of view, it's all good.
22:52It just needs a bit of work there.
22:53So, let me know what you reckon in the comments section below.
22:56Have you bought one of these?
22:57What's it like?
22:58Are you enjoying it, or do you just have the normal GT?
23:01I'm keen for your feedback.
