This is probably one of the most surprising cars I’ve driven. Maserati has transformed from a brand with nice engine note, but dated tech, to a brand with an awesome engine note, new technology and insane performance. Paul Maric tests out the latest from Italy.

00:00We've also got a speed limit monitor here that's constantly beeping at you, telling you that you're speeding,
00:05only you're speeding because it's reading the speed wrong.
00:10100 to 0, 34.69 metres. I reckon that could be a new record for us.
00:16G'day, I'm Paul. This is the new Maserati Gran Turismo.
00:21I'm excited to drive this because the last Gran Turismo I drove, I loved it for its noise.
00:25Like, it was, the interior was a little bit dated, the exterior stayed looking beautiful the entire time,
00:30but the noise was amazing. That V8 engine was just something else.
00:33So, unfortunately, the V8 engine is gone. It's now a V6, and this is basically an engine that's shared with the MC20 supercar that they've launched.
00:41So, I'm excited to hear what it sounds like. I know it won't sound the same, but Italians are known for tuning their exhaust notes to absolute perfection.
00:48So, we'll see how that goes.
00:49Now, let's talk about pricing. I hope you're sitting down for this.
00:51It is priced at over $400,000. That is too expensive. The whole range kicks off at over $300,000.
01:00Yeah. So, today, we're going to do a detailed review of this car.
01:02If you do want to skip ahead to other parts of this review, you can use the timecode store on the screen,
01:05or if you're on YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below.
01:08Yeah, design.
01:09So, there's actually a stack of free colours to choose from, which is good,
01:12and then your optional colours kick off at around $12,500,000 and can go all the way up to $40,000 for some of those bespoke colours.
01:18And look, I think the people buying this, they just want a car that is kind of timeless and beautiful looking,
01:23and certainly it achieves that goal. Just have a look at the design. It is absolutely beautiful.
01:28It's got carbon highlights down the side there, full LED headlights.
01:31This actually has all the bells and whistles that the old car was missing.
01:34So, you are getting all of that latest technology that I'll run you through once we get inside the car.
01:38Front engine, so it's all located under here.
01:41And then around the side, come and have a look at these brakes.
01:4320-inch alloy wheels with that sort of piano black finish.
01:4821-inch at the back, so they're staggered.
01:50Cross-drilled rotors, six-piston caliper, so fairly meaty braking unit.
01:54I'll be keen to see how this pulls up.
01:56This is a fairly heavy car. It weighs under two tonnes, but still a lot of weight to be moving around,
02:01especially at the speeds this engine will do.
02:03So, hopefully these brakes are capable of managing that whole process.
02:08Trofeo model gets the Trofeo on the side, and then these holes on the side here,
02:12which is sort of typical Maserati stuff.
02:14Cool story with Maserati.
02:16Recently, I had the chance to tour the Ferrari factory and visit Maranello.
02:22Sort of did all the sort of standard stuff over there,
02:24but Maserati is basically next door to Ferrari,
02:26and then not far from these guys is Santagata, where Lamborghini is.
02:31So, you've got these iconic, iconic supercar brands that are all located
02:36just within a stone's throw of each other,
02:38and it's just bizarre to think that it all really just happened in that area.
02:41So, pretty cool heritage, and definitely if you are going there,
02:44make sure you visit all the museums and stuff,
02:46because they are well worth the inspection.
02:48It's a 360 camera, so you've got that located on the side.
02:51LED indicator.
02:53Maserati, Trident up there.
02:54I like this too, so it's a flush door handle, and it's an electronic strike.
02:57So, you basically just give that a light pull, and then it opens the door there for you.
03:03So, 21s on the rear.
03:05You've got a second caliper there for the park brake.
03:08Cross-drilled rotors there as well.
03:09295 wide rubber on what appears to be kind of a semi-slick.
03:14That is a pretty meaty tie.
03:15What is it, a Goodyear Eagle F1 Supersport?
03:19There you go.
03:19I haven't seen that tie before, so that is pretty impressive.
03:22And now, around the back here, LED taillights with that wraparound design.
03:26Gran Turismo badge, and then Maserati up the top there with quad exhaust pipes
03:31and piano black diffuser down the bottom there.
03:33So, look, to me, this is a stunning car.
03:36This is something the Italians do so well.
03:38Let me know what you reckon about it in the comments section below.
03:41Have you owned a Maserati before?
03:43What was it like?
03:44Are you keen to own another one?
03:45What do you think about the pricing?
03:46Let me know down there in the comments section.
03:48So, we are inside the Gran Turismo.
03:50This is what the key looks like.
03:52You've got lock, unlock, boot, and then lights, and then the Maserati logo on the back.
03:58It's a beautiful key.
03:59It's like a leather-clad proximity-sensing key as well.
04:02So, you just grab the door handle.
04:03Once you're inside, you've got a push-button start here on the steering wheel.
04:06And I will point out as well, there is no traditional gear lever.
04:08It's just these buttons up here.
04:10So, I don't know that I love that, but, yeah, just a way of saving some space for you
04:15to be able to store other odds and ends.
04:18So, let's talk about the design.
04:20And, yes, this car is expensive.
04:22It's actually very expensive, but this is a stunning interior.
04:26Every single bit of this just looks like they've put effort into it.
04:30So, Alcantara headliner.
04:32There is leather everywhere throughout this cabin.
04:35Beautifully presented technology stack here.
04:37Exposed carbon.
04:39Like, it is just a beautiful interior.
04:41So, big props to Maserati for at least putting the effort into this
04:45and making you feel like you're getting your value or some value for money
04:49when it comes to that pricing.
04:51Even stuff like, sorry about all the flies, this clock, stunning.
04:55So, you can actually change what that looks like.
04:56Pressing this, you can actually customise what appears there.
04:59You've got clock, compass, pedals, G-meter.
05:03It's a very nice setup.
05:04You can change a lot of elements there, which is pretty cool, I reckon.
05:09So, hats off to them for giving a bit of innovation to the cabin.
05:12In terms of your touch points, nice and soft there in the centre.
05:15Soft on the door as well.
05:17How soft are the touch points?
05:18We've got our durometer.
05:19We've tested the main surfaces in this cabin.
05:22If you do want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before,
05:26have a look at the link in the description below.
05:28Now, build quality.
05:30It is built like a tank.
05:33Very impressive.
05:34And it's what the door slam sounds like.
05:35You've got a button here on the door that cracks it open.
05:40Very nice.
05:41Now, infotainment.
05:42Never thought I'd really be talking about an infotainment.
05:44System on a Maserati.
05:45But it's actually not a bad setup.
05:47So, 12.3-inch display down here.
05:49You have a smaller 8.8-inch display further down.
05:52And then a 12.3-inch display ahead of the driver.
05:55So, the top display does all of your infotainment controls for satellite navigation,
06:01which is inbuilt.
06:01You've got radio, AM, FM, DAB, digital radio, plump through a 12-speaker sound system,
06:07or the optional 19-speaker Sonos Faber sound system.
06:12Yeah, it's okay, but not amazing.
06:14So, I don't know that I'd be wasting money on it, but you can option up if you do need to.
06:18In terms of smartphone mirroring, you have both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
06:21Wireless.
06:22So, look at that.
06:23Very nice.
06:24Big screen there.
06:25Display.
06:25No dramas at all.
06:27Screen down here.
06:27So, this basically is all of your climate control.
06:30So, the car comes fitted with dual-zone automatic climate control,
06:33heated and cooled seats, heated steering wheel.
06:36You've also got your stop-start functionality, stability control,
06:39and then height-adjustable suspension there as well.
06:41And then also a glove box release button for accessing that.
06:44So, really nice, clean setup down there and pretty easy to use while you're driving.
06:48Screen ahead of the driver has a number of customizations too.
06:50So, there's a whole bunch of different things you can have appear on that screen if you do want them as well.
06:54Now, on the safety front, you've got autonomous emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection.
06:59Love this.
07:00You've actually got a digital display there to look out the rear.
07:03Blind spot monitoring built into the wing mirrors.
07:05Radar cruise control with a semi-autonomous steering function that we will test later on.
07:09Front and rear parking sensors and a 360 camera.
07:12I'll show you what that looks like.
07:13The quality of that's actually not too bad.
07:15I can see pretty clearly there.
07:16And then you've got different views you can select as well.
07:19And this is what the horn sounds like.
07:21So, moving on to practicality and we'll start off with your connectivity.
07:25You've got wireless phone charging tucked away down here.
07:27In the center console, you've got USB A and C, 12-volt outlet as well.
07:32You've got two cup holders here with a removable center section as well if you do want to put sort of deeper cups in.
07:38And then a couple of little storage nooks there.
07:41Glovebox.
07:41It's actually reasonably sized as well, which is pretty good.
07:44No sunglasses holder or anything like that.
07:46So, in terms of comfort, I mentioned all of the climate controls.
07:49In terms of the seats, though, you've got electric seat adjustment for the driver and front passengers.
07:53You can go forwards, backwards.
07:55Your backrest can go forwards and backwards.
07:56You can lift the front of the seat, back of the seat.
07:59You have lumbar adjustment there as well.
08:01Steering is tilt and reach adjustable, electronic for both directions.
08:06And on our reach test, all of this stuff is easy to reach while you're driving.
08:11Now, what's it like for second row?
08:13Let's give it a shot.
08:15I'm going to move this forward.
08:17It's got an electronic slide on it.
08:20Now, I am a larger gentleman.
08:23So, if you've got friends, hopefully they're not consumers of KFC like I am.
08:27But let's have a look.
08:28So, headroom isn't actually too bad.
08:30My head is just touching the glass there.
08:32And I think it would probably get a little bit hot if the sun was directly on it.
08:36But, yeah, look, it's fine.
08:37There's actually plenty of room for that seat to go forward as well.
08:40So, I've got my own cup holders here.
08:41Air vents, USB A and C connectivity.
08:45And a little slot that opens up into the boot.
08:49Surprisingly, not a bad place to actually be seated.
08:52Now, let's run through the cargo.
08:53By the way, that's where the camera is for that rear view camera.
08:56It's nestled right up there in the shark fin.
08:58You've got a powered tailgate.
08:59So, you just give that a little push.
09:01So, you've got just over 300 litres of cargo space, which isn't too bad.
09:04You can fit some golf clubs in there.
09:06And then beneath the cargo floor, you've got a tyre repair kit and a 12-volt outlet off to the side.
09:12Plus, that ski port as well.
09:16Okay, we've just hit the road in the Gran Turismo.
09:20This is a different experience.
09:22The last one of these that I drove, as I mentioned in the intro, had that beautiful Sonorous V8 sound.
09:26This has a bark on start-up, and then it sort of is subdued and quiet.
09:32So, yeah, it's just a different experience.
09:34So, under the bottom of this is now a 3-litre turbocharged six-cylinder petrol engine.
09:40Makes 410 kilowatts of power, 650 newton-metres of torque.
09:44So, it's a nice, healthy slab there, which I'm really impressed with.
09:48It's made it to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and it sort of feels like when you give it a little jab.
09:57It makes such a good sound on upshift.
10:00That is absolutely unreal.
10:02It does have just an unfortunate part of this day and age, but so many of these annoying little nannies.
10:08Like, you've got a lane-keeping assistant, which I'll switch off now just because we're on our ride-and-handling track.
10:15But we've also got a speed limit monitor here that I found doesn't really work that accurately.
10:20It's constantly beeping at you, telling you that you're speeding, but only you're speeding because it's reading the speed wrong.
10:26So, it's a little bit frustrating.
10:27So, you have to basically do the standard thing, go through the settings, and switch all that stuff off so it doesn't annoy you.
10:34Once it's off, it's actually quite a pleasant sort of experience.
10:36It doesn't annoy you too much, but just something to take note of.
10:42Yeah, Maserati claims a combined fuel economy of just over 10 litres per 100km.
10:47Slightly ambitious if you're going to be kicking it in the teeth.
10:50We're sitting closer to around that 14 litres per 100 mark.
10:53If you're driving mainly highway driving and stuff, it will dip down because it is a pretty efficient engine.
10:58But once you do get up it, it's going to consume a little bit of fuel.
11:01I forgot to mention as well, that 8-speed auto is actually made into an all-wheel drive system.
11:05So, I'll be keen to see how it goes once we get stuck into it because it is a lot of power, a lot of torque,
11:11and it really does need all-wheel drive to keep everything in check.
11:13So, something worth keeping in mind.
11:16Now, sine wave time.
11:17We attack this at 130km an hour.
11:19But we do it in the same speed in every car.
11:23It's the Maximum Speed Limited Australia.
11:25Gives us a good idea of body control.
11:27Yeah, very nice.
11:29You know, they've done such a good job with the tuning of the suspension here
11:34that really tackles stuff like that beautifully and without any fuss at all.
11:39Now, let's talk about the ride.
11:41This is probably the thing that blew me away the most.
11:43When it's in GT mode, which is just the standard driving mode,
11:46the ride is fantastic.
11:48Like, it is nice and soft.
11:49You would never know that you're on low-profile tyres.
11:52It is just such a good city car.
11:54And it kind of meets that description of being a GT.
11:57It is exactly that.
11:58Fast in a straight line and then just nice and comfortable over bumps.
12:01So, we've done an excellent job with that.
12:03I don't know if you can't just see what it's like when we've got a now choppier stretch of road.
12:07Okay, I'm going to slide this over to comfort.
12:09And we do our bumpy road here.
12:12This is like the worst road in Australia.
12:14We do this at 90km an hour to see what the ride is like.
12:19We've got a condensed sine wave here as well.
12:23Okey-dokey.
12:24Here it comes.
12:31Yeah, like I said before, it's really weird.
12:33It does not feel like a sports car in the sense of the ride.
12:38Like, the ride is really comfortable.
12:40And I think that if you do want a fast car that has this kind of brand heritage
12:44and it ticks all of those boxes,
12:46but you don't want like a bone-shattering ride,
12:49this is perfect for that.
12:50It is exactly what it needs to be.
12:52So, yeah, they've done a great job with that.
12:57Now, drive mode selector is down here.
12:59You've got GT Sport Comfort and Corsa.
13:03Let's roll it over to Corsa.
13:05You can see the suspension dropping.
13:07It switches stability control off.
13:09I'm going to pop it into manual mode.
13:11You can press that thing on the dash.
13:13Let's go for a fang around the track.
13:15Oh, man.
13:25The noise is unbelievable in here.
13:28It sounds so good.
13:30Oh, my God.
13:32It is fast.
13:33Holy moly.
13:37This is ridiculously quick.
13:39Great steering feel.
13:41Getting all sorts of warnings there.
13:42It's saying selective ride height not permitted,
13:45even though I haven't really touched anything.
13:48Let's see what it's like along the back straight here.
13:50Wow.
13:57This requires a very big degree of concentration
14:02because it is absolutely hauling ass.
14:08All right, here comes the back straight.
14:10We'll give it a little punch here.
14:11Oh, my goodness.
14:17Wow.
14:18Oh, yes.
14:20Oh, man.
14:21That is crazy quick.
14:25I was not expecting that.
14:29I am lost for words.
14:30That is crazy fast.
14:33I need to get my breath.
14:34That is insane.
14:35Like, it just hauls ass.
14:37And there's almost no lag as well.
14:39Once it's on boost, it just hooks up and it moves.
14:43It absolutely moves.
14:44There's no twitching.
14:45It really just connects nicely to the ground there.
14:48It's, yeah, I'm really quite surprised at how well they've been able to achieve that ride and handling balance.
14:53It is excellent.
14:55It's not like a Ferrari where it's super firm and, you know, very, very sporty.
14:59Like, that is its number one goal.
15:01This still has that degree of comfort when you're getting up at great steering feel.
15:06Brakes feel nice and solid.
15:07I did get a break over heat warning earlier when we were doing our warm-up laps.
15:13That was after two or three laps of the ride and handling track.
15:16So, I don't think these are going to be quite the brake package that you want for proper track day.
15:22If you're going to be doing that, I'd be looking at a different pad or perhaps even a carbon ceramic option instead.
15:28But for driving around the mountain and doing that sort of stuff, this is a really cool package.
15:33And, you know what, we'll do a lap now as well with me not talking just so you can have a listen to exactly what this sounds like because it is pretty impressive.
15:58So, I don't know.
16:28So, I don't know.
16:58So, I don't know.
17:28You can also adjust your suspension just by pushing in this central button here so you can move your way through that in all of the different drive modes, which is a handy feature to have.
17:40Now, let's talk about visibility.
17:41So, I can see clearly down the front of the car there.
17:43Wing mirrors are nice and big.
17:44Love this digital rear view mirror.
17:46So, you can either switch that on or off.
17:48There's great visibility out the back anyway, but it's just a handy feature to have.
17:51And then you've got a pretty impressive 360 camera as well for parking.
17:55Just the one thing to take note, that nose is really long.
17:58So, you have to be so careful when you're approaching curbs because it's quite long and low.
18:03Thankfully, though, it does have front parking sensors that makes it easy to sort of nudge it into curbs without destroying the front end of your car.
18:09Now, in terms of road noise, there is a little bit of road noise that comes into the cabin.
18:12I mean, it's the nature of those tyres.
18:14It's noticeable more on course chip roads, but ultimately, it really isn't the end of the world.
18:18This is how it went when we put it up against our calibrated sound metre.
18:21If you do want to compare this to other cars that we've driven before, there is a link in the description below.
18:25Okay, time to test our semi-autonomous steering functions.
18:30This will be interesting.
18:31Never thought I'd be doing this in a Maserati, but we're basically using the three outer lanes of our Bolt to see how well the vehicle will hold itself within its lane.
18:40So, we're going to set the cruise at 70 kilometres an hour.
18:45And I'll engage the steering assistant there.
18:48You can see the steering wheel go green on the screen.
18:50Alrighty, so this first lane is doing a reasonable job.
18:54It's getting probably a little bit close to that line, but it's not the end of the world.
18:59Jump over to the next lane.
19:00It'll get progressively harder as we go to our two outer lanes.
19:03So, we'll see what happens up here.
19:04Wait for that steering wheel to go green.
19:09Alright, there it is.
19:11Gradually let go of that.
19:13Cool.
19:13So, same story.
19:14It's sort of holding us fairly central.
19:17Yep, nice.
19:18Alright, next lane.
19:19This will be the tricky one.
19:20Let's see how it goes up here.
19:22Wait for that steering wheel to go green.
19:29Still waiting.
19:31It may not actually detect.
19:32We'll get a little closer to the top here.
19:36It doesn't look like it likes it up here, unfortunately.
19:39So, yeah, look, it's a pass in the first two lanes.
19:42It sort of holds itself fairly nicely there.
19:44But the limitation on my top lane suggests that it may not be as willing to put a whole bunch of steering input in for sort of more sort of challenging turns.
19:53Okay, it is time to do some performance testing.
19:58Let's see how this goes.
19:58So, the official 0 to 100 time is just over three seconds.
20:02Pretty quick.
20:04And then we're going to go through to 120 as well.
20:08There's actually a drag race screen here too, which I think is pretty cool.
20:12So, this is going to be logging our performance times.
20:14We'll see how it sort of matches up to what the draggy says.
20:17So, here we go.
20:18Let's see if it's got launch control.
20:22Oh, man, that was quick.
20:25All right, there we are there.
20:31Oh, that was quick.
20:32Once it builds up that boost, it really jets off out of there nice and fast.
20:37So, that was 0 to 100.
20:393.65 seconds.
20:41So, not quite the claim.
20:43And it measured 3.6 on there as well.
20:4580 to 120, 2.2 seconds.
20:48That is ballistic.
20:50That is so fast.
20:52All right, we'll go back one more time.
20:53I want to build up just a little bit more boost.
20:55And we'll just see if that makes any difference.
20:57Okay, here's take two.
20:58We'll dial up just a touch more boost.
21:01And we'll see if that helps us out.
21:04All right, here we go.
21:19That is brutally quick.
21:21Okie dokie.
21:22Let's have a little sticky peek.
21:25So, that time around, we had 3.65 seconds again.
21:33Like, literally the exact same.
21:35And then 80 to 120, 2.2 seconds.
21:37Even though this was saying we did 3.5, which was slightly different.
21:42So, not quite the claim, but getting there.
21:44Okay, let's see what the brake and tyre package is like with a stop from 100.
21:52So, there we are there.
21:53Here we go.
21:54100 to 0, 2.59 seconds.
22:05Get this.
22:05That's 34.69 metres.
22:09I reckon that could be a new record for us.
22:11We're going to overlay the other fastest results on the screen here.
22:15But, I've not seen anything that quick before.
22:18That is absolutely unreal.
22:20If you do want to see how this car compares to other cars that we've tested before, there is a link in the description below.
22:24So, now, our reverse test.
22:26How quick does it go in reverse?
22:27Here we go.
22:32Modest.
22:3332 kilometres an hour.
22:34Okay, so, the Maserati Gran Turismo.
22:42What do we reckon?
22:43Look, if you put the price to one side, I can't fault it.
22:47Like, it sounds unreal.
22:49It goes like, you know, off a shovel.
22:52Handles nicely.
22:54It is incredibly comfortable for city driving.
22:56It has heaps of room inside.
22:57It's got all the latest tech.
22:59I really am struggling to figure out how to fault this car because it does what it says on the box extremely well.
23:04It is expensive, though.
23:06$400,000.
23:08That is a lot of money.
23:09So, yeah, that is the only thing to consider.
23:11There is a cheaper version available if you don't need as much performance.
23:15And that is probably a better option, in my opinion.
23:17But, this is a sensational car.
23:19And I was genuinely surprised.
23:20I was not expecting it to be this good.
23:22So, anyway.
23:23Let me know what you reckon in the comments section below.
23:25If you like the look of it, what do you reckon about the price?
23:27Do you reckon it's good value for money?
23:29I'm keen for your feedback.
