00:00G'day, I'm Paul. One of the best value dual cab utes on the market is the GWM Canon,
00:06but it had a significant flaw and that was the engine. It kind of was pretty underdone. So they
00:11have now updated that, plus updated a couple of other bits and pieces around the car. I want to
00:16figure out whether this now fixes the real only gripe we had with this previously and would then
00:22make it some pretty incredible value for money. So this is the Ultra spec, so it's one up from
00:27the base model. It's priced at just over $43,000 drive away. I mean, $43,000 drive away doesn't
00:33get you much in other dual cab ute brands. If that is too expensive, the entire range kicks off from
00:39just over $40,000 and goes all the way up to the XSR, which is like the off-road spec of this ute.
00:45So today we're going to do a detailed review of this, plus some light off-road driving. If you do
00:50want to skip ahead to other parts of this review, you've got timecodes on the screen, or if you're
00:53on YouTube, you can scroll down and use the chapters below. Let's talk about design first.
00:58So there have been some minor changes to the design, mainly in this lower area and the grille
01:03section as well. You still have this enormous logo up the front here, but I think people are used to
01:09that by now. You'll see this is different to the old version of this as well, just some of those
01:13design changes down there. Headlights, full LED headlights. You have a fog light down the bottom
01:19there as well. Around the side here, set of 18s on highway terrain tyres. In terms of the design,
01:25you've got a machined finish there with a graphite on the inside and these sort of wheel arch guards
01:33that are body coloured as well. Camera on the side here, indicator built into the wing mirror.
01:39Sidesteps, so plastic sidesteps. It's one of the things I don't really love about these dual cab utes.
01:44They just look a little bit cheap and if you do any off-roading, you're going to kind of damage that
01:48if you whack a rock on it. So if you're going to do any proper off-roading, I'd look at getting those
01:52changed over. Roof rails up the top here. You've got privacy glass, sports bar. Love a good sports
01:59bar. I still don't know what anyone uses them for. If you have a use for them, let me know in the
02:03comments section below. Disc brakes. It is kind of comical in this day and age. You've got vehicles
02:08like Triton that still have drum brakes at the rear and you've got a vehicle here that's a little over
02:12$40,000 drive away that has disc brakes. So it retains leaf springs at the rear. They haven't really
02:17changed anything there. Yeah, around the back here, you've got a set of LED taillights. This,
02:23which kind of hangs out, it's the cable for the tray, but for some reason it pokes out every time
02:29you close it. Big GWM branding on the back here, similar to what you see on the back of a Hilux.
02:354x4 and then 2.4T, which signifies the uprated engine that they've fitted to this. Reverse camera
02:41off to the side here. One of the issues with this, but you know, it is offset, which I don't love.
02:46They're better when they're in the centre because it's easier to attach a trailer, but
02:50this is, it's positioned in such a way that it's going to attract a lot of dust,
02:54mud and debris from rain. So I suspect if you are going to do a lot of driving on gravel roads,
03:01this is going to get dirty pretty quickly. There's no washer on that, so you're going to have to
03:04manually keep that clean to make sure that you can actually see where you're going when you're
03:08reversing if you're going to use the camera. Look at this. So this is one of the things that
03:13I like about this. So you've got hydraulic arms here to lower and raise, just makes it a little
03:18easier to operate, but you've got this step. So something that they've had since the first
03:24generation of this, but it gives you easy access to the tray. It means you don't need to do your
03:28back trying to get in. And it's just a handy little solution there that gets you around that problem.
03:33Spray and bed liner, which kind of gives you a little bit more space there in terms of loading.
03:37It's not taken away by having a plastic tub thrown in. Now in terms of dimensions of the tray,
03:43you have a load length of just over 1500mm, load width of just over 1500mm and depth of just over
03:49500mm. So even though you don't have any power outlets here, like a 12 volt outlet, like you'd
03:55find in a lot of other utes, they've actually pre-wired to the tray and you've got buttons inside
03:59to activate the power points. So it means that you do have a bit of flexibility in terms of fitting
04:04tools and accessories to the rear here and just gives you a little bit more overhead to work with
04:08and to customise what you want in your tray. So let me know what you reckon in the comments section
04:13below. Do you reckon it's good value for money? Would you buy one of these over some of the more
04:17established brands? Let me know your feedback. Okay, so we're inside the Canon. This is what the
04:22key looks like. You've got remote start, panic, lock, unlock, and then the GWM power, power logo on the
04:33back there. So proximity sensing key, you can leave that in your pocket. You've got a push button start
04:38just down here. So let's talk about the design first. You know, I own just $43,000. Have a look
04:46at this interior. It looks really, really nice. When you have a look at what else is available on the
04:50market and how low rent some of the lower sort of entry-level models look, this really sort of
04:56takes it up a notch. You've got big new infotainment screen, sort of redesigned control structure.
05:01You've got these soft touch finishes. Even this sort of silhouette here on the dashboard looks pretty
05:06cool as well. It's part of this update. They have a new steering wheel as well. So I think it's really
05:11sort of nice looking design. In terms of your touch points, so here on the centre is sort of fairly soft
05:16there and soft on the door as well. How soft are they? We've got our durometer. We've tested the
05:21main surfaces in this cabin. So if you do want to see how this car compares to others that we've
05:25tested, there is a link in the description below. Yeah, build quality. Let's take a little look. A
05:31little bit wonky there. It all feels okay. What's it been like? Do you own one of these? How's it sort
05:38of fared for you? That's what the door slam sounds like. Let's chat infotainment. So bigger infotainment
05:46screen, 12.3 inch display. It looks really quite nice there. It's not over the top. It's not sitting
05:51too high. It just sort of looks decent. So as you can see, inbuilt Apple CarPlay. So that's wireless.
05:58I've got it connected at the moment, but it is wireless. One of the things that kind of annoys me is
06:02that if you are in CarPlay, like you just can't use any functions to get back to the home screen as
06:08far as I can tell. So you've got to, like if you're in Maps, you've got to go to the home of CarPlay,
06:13then to GWM, and then you're in the sort of the main display. But one thing you can do is map the
06:19steering wheel shortcut button. So the way that it works is if you are in your Maps, you can then press
06:25that. That will then take you to the home screen, which then means you don't have to faff around over
06:30here. So I guess there is a workaround, but it would just be nice that the buttons sort of worked
06:34when you were doing stuff. So anyway, outside of that, the infotainment system is pretty basic. So
06:39you have Bluetooth telephony if you're not using the cable. You don't have in-built satellite
06:44navigation, but you do have AM, FM, and a DAB digital radio. You have a shortcut menu that you can swipe
06:51down from the top on, and I'll show you what Android Auto looks like. So yeah, full screen integration
06:58again. And yeah, pretty straightforward to use. Screen ahead of the driver. So these sections on
07:05the side are fixed, sort of LED backlit style things, whereas the centre is actually a digital
07:11display. So it's not that full screen layout. It looks good. No real sort of complaints there.
07:17It is a little bit tricky to use at times, though, when you're driving, because you have to clear
07:22warnings before you can navigate through the menus. So it's kind of just a little bit annoying. You
07:28can push and hold OK, and then you can flick through the menus. It'd be good just to be able
07:31to flick through the menus without having to sort of think about that. Now, safety. We've got blind
07:35spot monitor built into this section on the door just here. Rear cost traffic alert. You've got front
07:42and rear parking sensors. You've got a 360 camera, auto dimming rear vision mirror, and you also have
07:47radar cruise control as well, which is on this stalk that you can't really see because the
07:53redesigned steering wheel is in the way. So I think that could be a little bit better. And this is
07:58what the 360 camera looks like. Quality, that's actually quite reasonable. So there's your top
08:02down view, and that is looking at the rear. Then you've got stuff like a car wash view here if you
08:08need to align your tyres, and then you can kind of change what appears on the screen here ahead of you
08:14as well. So yeah, pretty decent setup. Quite sort of happy with how all that looks. And this is what
08:20the horn sounds like. So practicality, we'll start off with connectivity. So you've got a USB C and A
08:25port up the front here, 12 volts outlet, ventilated wireless phone charger. Let me just pop that up.
08:32That's cool. So it's actually got the fan up the back there, which is nice to see. You've got a USB
08:38port up the top here for a dash camera. As I mentioned before, that you do have wiring to the
08:43tray. This is where those buttons are. So kind of like the auxiliary switch bank you have on a
08:48Ford Ranger, which is up the top here. They've integrated the three controls here for the 12
08:52volt outlets, which is an interesting way to do things, I reckon. Now, in terms of your storage,
08:58so you've got phone storage up the front here, a couple of cup holders down here with sort of
09:03different heights to them. You've got centre console here with air conditioning and this slidable cover.
09:11What else have we got here? A little tray down the bottom here as well. The storage is actually
09:15pretty good and glove box there too. And no sunglasses holder here, but they have integrated
09:22it up here, which is an interesting place to put it. In terms of your comfort, you've got a single
09:28zone automatic climate control. You have heated and cooled seats for the front row, which I reckon is
09:33a fantastic feature, and a heated steering wheel as well. You've got electric seat adjustments,
09:39so you can go forwards and backwards. You can adjust your backrest. You can also lift the rear
09:43of the seat. Unfortunately, you can't lift the front of the seat or lower it. It's probably one
09:48of my gripes with some of these Chinese market vehicles. You just can't get that sort of elevation
09:52you need. You constantly feel like you're slipping out of the seat. So we'll see what it's like when we
09:56go for a bit of a drive. Adjustable steering for both tilt and reach as well. Now, reach test.
10:03And you've got to sort of just reach in a little bit to catch the outer edges of that screen.
10:08Now, second row. Let's have a little look. So under here. So I guess if you lifted those up,
10:13you could have a sort of fairly flat floor to load things sideways. You've got some,
10:17probably an emergency triangle and some bits for the jack there. Behind the seats. Okay,
10:23there's a tiny bit of storage in there as well if you do need it. So not a huge amount,
10:28but it'll do the job. Okay, let's have a look at this. This is great. So knee room,
10:34fantastic. Tow room is great. Head room isn't too bad. It's actually surprising how much space
10:40they've been able to cram into here, given this vehicle isn't enormous, but it actually feels
10:45more spacious than some of the other dual cabs on the market. So I'm quite impressed with that,
10:49given my seat is quite far back. Two USB-A outlets, air vents, a little bit of storage down
10:54the bottom there as well. A centre armrest here. No cup holders by the look of it.
11:01But yeah. All right. And then our window test. Does it go all the way down? So it's auto up and down.
11:07Goes all the way down.
11:12All right. We've just hit the road in the GWM Canon. Let's kick off with the drivetrain
11:19enhancement. So what they've done is gone to 2.4 litre four-cylinder turbocharged diesel engine
11:25that now makes 135 kilowatts of power and 480 newton metres of torque. So it's still slightly
11:31below the benchmarks in the segment, which are at the 500 newton metre mark for a four-cylinder
11:36engine. But it's a big improvement over the outgoing one, which when we tested in our big
11:40ute test, we found that it really struggled once you sort of put a trailer on it. It just really
11:44didn't have the punch it needed to get moving. So now that it has an increased towing capacity,
11:48you do have a little bit more headroom there to just get up and go without having to sort
11:53of worry about it being underpowered.
11:57It's also now mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. And the curious thing with this
12:02package, and probably one thing that I quite like, is that when you run it in normal mode,
12:07it's basically running in all-wheel drive. So you've got torque going to all four wheels
12:12on demand. But if you switch it over to Eco, it just goes to rear-wheel drive. So you will
12:18actually find that you do save fuel with that. I found with my Raptor, if I drive it in two-wheel
12:22drive high range, you are saving maybe five to 10% of your fuel by doing that. So it's good that you
12:27have a couple of options there and have the added traction without needing to go to four-wheel drive
12:31high range, which you can't use on sealed surfaces. Now, what does it all feel like if you
12:35sort of stand on it? Gearbox isn't super fast, but it's also not super slow. Yeah, look, it's reasonable.
12:42It sort of pushes you in the back nicely. It's not over the top. I'll be curious to see when we do
12:47our performance testing what kind of 0 to 100 numbers it logs, because it feels like a big
12:52improvement over the previous engine, but it's sort of not groundbreaking. It doesn't feel as
12:57punchy as something like a Hilux or a Ranger. There is something, though, that I did notice that
13:03I'm not a huge fan of, and it's the throttle calibration, especially when you take off with just
13:08a little bit more throttle than you normally would. So it doesn't do that. Nothing, nothing.
13:12And then everything just punches you back in the seat. And this is kind of an issue they had with
13:17their hybrid products, which they recently fixed, and we shot a video on that. You can click up there
13:21to watch that. But basically, they fixed those issues in the hybrid product, recalibrated the
13:27throttle feel, and I'm hoping they'll be able to do the same thing here, because it just feels a little
13:31bit too sharp. It's fine if you're not sort of getting on it, but if you do need to get on it, get out of an
13:35intersection. Nothing happens, and then all of a sudden, you just get punched back into your seat.
13:40Now, GWM claims a combined economy of 8.4 litres per 100. I have to do this annoying thing where you
13:45have to push and hold the OK button to then move between the menus when the lane support system isn't
13:52active. It really is so frustrating. So I'm going to have to do it again. Okay, there we go. So now we'll go
13:57down here and just have a look at our fuel economy. I need to do it before the lane support stuff comes
14:03back on. So around 9.3 litres per 100 Ks, which is pretty good. So there you go. Again, it's so
14:08annoying. If you're on one of those menus, the second it detects a lane marker, it just goes back
14:15to that main menu, and you can't go back to it unless you push and hold OK again. The good news
14:20here is, though, it doesn't have all of the annoying safety stuff that is now part of standard
14:25requirements for a car to get five stars if it's launched today. Thankfully, all you've got,
14:30really, is the emergency lane keeping assistant, and you don't have the driver distraction monitor
14:35and all that sort of stuff that just seems to be really poorly calibrated. So, all right,
14:39I've just killed that. So it's not going to annoy us. What about the ride? This is the bit that really
14:45needs some work. It is bizarrely quite firm. It's tuned like a sports car, and it's just way too firm
14:52for sort of day-to-day city driving. You just find you're constantly feeling it. It's so tiring.
14:58And I'll jack the speed up to 130 here so we can see what it's like across our sine waves.
15:03I'm going to tell you something in a second, though, that I think might fix this issue. So
15:07get this up to 130, and we'll just see what the body control's like once the speed picks up.
15:14OK, here we go. OK, there you go. So the benefit of the firmer ride is that
15:21it has better body control than some other dual cab units in this segment, but it does feel sort of
15:26very just wobbly and firm. It's just really not a very good combination. So it's something they need
15:32to work on. And this is something they are about to work on. So GWM just announced that they've
15:37actually hired the former head of ride and handling for Holden, and he was behind some of what I think
15:45are the best handling Australian sports cars ever to have been created. So I think that hiring him,
15:53his name's Rob Tribbiani, I think that he's going to do wonders for this brand. He'll be able to bring
15:57what the Koreans brought to their ride and handling maybe 5, 10, 15 years ago when they started doing
16:04local programs. And funnily enough, Rob used to work here at this proving ground that we test out
16:09when Holden owned it. So I think it'll be familiar ground for him, and hopefully he'll be able to fix some
16:13of just this annoying stuff here that really should have been caught during the actual engineering
16:18process. Now it's bumpy road time. I feel this is going to be firm. We do this at 90 k's an hour
16:25just to see what the ride is like over a poorly corrugated stretch of road. Oh man, this is so firm
16:34and so busy. Yeah, okay. It kind of just reiterates the fact that they need to just do a little bit of
16:42work on this because it is just a bit much and definitely needs to be softened out and refined
16:48just a bit more. Now on the drive modes I mentioned before, eco, normal and sport. We'll go over to
16:56sport mode. Yes, it's sort of sports car, but we test all cars back to back in the same way just to
17:01see how they perform when they're closer to their limits. It just gives us a really good idea of
17:05which bits need to be improved. So let's see what it's like through here.
17:19Steering actually doesn't feel too bad, so they've done a good job with that.
17:23Definitely not as punchy as Hilux and Ranger at 500.
17:27I'm sort of pinned to the board there and sort of gradually accelerating.
17:34And then here's our mid-corner bump. Yeah, that sort of spring loads you a little bit
17:40just because it is so firm. See what it's like along the back here.
17:48Yeah, you know what? The firmness of the ride does help keep it flat through corners,
17:52which is nice. And then we've got our faster sweeper up the back here as well.
18:01Force through here. The stability control isn't overly intrusive either, which I'm a fan of. It
18:07just means that it's not sort of impeding your motion. And at lower speeds on slipperier surfaces,
18:11it's not going to hassle you constantly. All right, here's our back straight. Just stay in that.
18:17Yeah, look, it's fine. It's reasonable. It'd be nice to see maybe just a little bit more torque,
18:23but beggars can't be choosers.
18:27Now let's talk about road noise. So a fair bit of road noise coming into the cabin on coarse-chip
18:31surfaces, especially at highway speeds. So we put it up against our calibrated sound meter,
18:36and this is how it went. If you do want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested
18:40before, look at the link in the description below. On the visibility front, love those big wing
18:46mirrors. You see great down the side of the vehicle there. Visibility out the rear is really
18:50good as well. And with a high-quality 360 camera, you're kind of getting great visibility around
18:54the vehicle as well as you drive and park and do other low-speed manoeuvres. So towing capacity,
18:59it's been improved. So it's gone up from 3,200 to 3,500 with a brake trailer. So it means that
19:04you're now matched with the other vehicles in this segment, and it just gives you a little bit more
19:08headroom when it comes to towing.
19:12Okey-dokey, let's do a little bit of performance testing and see how this goes. So we're going to
19:19do 0 to 100, and then all the way through to 120, so we can get our 80 to 120 overtaking time as well.
19:26Turn traction control off. Okay, here we go.
19:29All right. 60, 80, 100, and 120. All righty. A little while to get there. Let's have a little
19:53look. 0 to 100. Yeah, wow. 11.16 seconds and 80 to 120, 8.78 seconds. So I'm curious to see how
20:05that compares to the old one. Okay, so it is quicker than the previous version of this by a
20:12little over a second, which is pretty good. Still not sort of amazing, but yeah, better than what it
20:18was, which is encouraging to see. All right, let's go back and do a stop from 100.
20:23All right.
20:35So that was 100 to 0 in 3.11 seconds and 43.57 metres. So not an amazing stopping distance,
20:49and it'd be good to see that sort of shortened down closer to the 40 metre mark. Now, if you do
20:53want to see how this car compares to others that we've tested before, there's a link in
20:55the description to the spreadsheet with all of our data in it. So, all right, how fast
21:00does it go in reverse? Let's find out. Here we go.
21:03All right, 37 kilometres an hour. Okay, time to do a little bit of light off-roading on our light
21:13off-road course here. Running through the top level specs to begin with. So ground clearance,
21:17232 mil, which is fairly reasonable. Approach angle of 27 degrees. That's the angle of the face
21:23you can approach before you hit the front of the car. Departure angle of 25 degrees and 500 mil of
21:29waiting depth. And in terms of the actual hardware itself, you've got rear diff lock, which works in
21:33two-wheel drive, which is great. I just love being able to activate it if I need to without having to
21:37switch to four-wheel drive high range. Given this is all-wheel drive effectively, I'm thinking it
21:44should do a decent enough job here because I don't actually have the option of four-wheel drive high
21:48range as far as I can tell. So it'll be interesting to see how it performs there. We do have a low range
21:55and a hill descent control as well. So let's kick off and see how we go. We're going to start off
22:00in two-wheel drive just to see how well the traction control works here on our offset mogul.
22:09Test this in every car that has two-wheel drive available just so we can get a feel for the
22:15traction control system. So we let the rear drop into this little hole here so it has no
22:20available traction on the lifted wheel, and then I'll just roll onto the throttle on the seat.
22:28Okay. Oh, it's so close. I'll go full throttle. There we go. Traction control's biting and then
22:37releasing. Come on, come on. So close. No, not liking that. All right. So let me just try tracking
22:45control off just to see if that makes any difference. No, that's not going to make any
22:52difference. All right. So we'll just hit the rear diff lock to see if that will work here for us.
22:59Look at that. Piece of cake. Very nice. Just shows you that if you're ever in a situation like that
23:04where you've got rear wheel cocked, you're in two-wheel drive, having the option of a rear diff lock that
23:09you can just flick on at any moment I just think is a massive, massive help. So all right. I'm going to
23:15pop this back into normal mode so that the all-wheel drive system activates one more time.
23:23Okay. There it is there. Let's see how it goes in the reverse direction here where
23:28we have a front left without traction. Wedge up against that. All right. Here we go.
23:34Roll onto the throttle. Piece of cake. So the traction control actually works quite well.
23:51They're in the normal mode when it's running as a four-wheel drive. So that's a really nice setup.
23:57Very impressed with that. Now it's time to attack our hill. So this has been regraded recently. So
24:03it's probably going to be a little bit easy, but that's all right. We'll give it a shot anyway.
24:06So I'm going to put it into low range. Move it over into neutral. There we go. That is in low range
24:16now. So what we do here, I'm going to go constant throttle on the way up. Then if it makes it up,
24:21I'll come back around and do one where I come to a stop and then try and apply the throttle. So
24:26let's see how it goes. I've left the rear diff unlocked for the moment so we can see
24:29how it performs without that. I can hear the traction control working. It is doing a really
24:40impressive job there of biting on the way up here to let it climb. That is genuinely impressive.
24:49Nice. So basically I just stayed in the throttle then, just constant throttle, and it just walked
24:55its way up there without any fuss. Didn't even have to lock that rear diff. So I think that is the
25:00sign of a decent system there that they've spent a bit of time actually engineering, which is good to
25:06see. Okay. So hill descent control is on. Come across this crest here and we'll just see how well it
25:14performs. That's pretty reasonable. Just by slow descent. Yeah, fine. Nothing too crazy.
25:26Okay. So final test here. Going to come to a stop just to see if it has hill holds.
25:34Here we go. Letting go of the brake. Roll onto the throttle.
25:42It's not liking this at all. We're kind of just stuck there. So let me go back. We'll give that one
25:54more shot this time with the rear diff lock on. Yeah, it struggled a lot more getting up there then.
25:59Looks like we dug ourselves some holes there. So give that one more try with the rear diff locked.
26:07Here we go. Get it up to that spot again. Turn that parking sensor off. All right. Let go of the brake.
26:14Onto the throttle.
26:18That is much better. Much, much better. Nice. Basically just walked up there. So shows you if
26:26the traction control isn't going to save you, you just hit that rear diff lock button and
26:30Bob's your own call. Okay. Final obstacle on our light off-road course is the rocks. Now,
26:37there is no drive mode available. And the thing that concerns me here is given how rough the ride
26:42is, I'm going to ride the brake with the throttle here. Okay, cool. So it's doing okay. It's actually
26:48not that uncomfortable over this, but part of the problem you can get with cars that have really
26:53sensitive throttles or really rough ride is that you keep mashing the throttle pedal as you go over
26:59rocky terrain like this. And it causes the car to pick up excessive speed. Whereas this is actually
27:04doing a fine job and I'm able to sort of ride the brake as I go through it with my left foot so that
27:09we can control momentum. Okie dokie. So GW and Canon, what do we reckon? So off-road does really well.
27:17The fact that you've got a rear diff lock that you can activate in two-wheel drive, really impressed
27:21with that. Here in low range, it is a bit peaky in terms of the revs. So I don't know if that's to
27:27do with this new transmission, but they have sorted out some of the stability control issues they had
27:31with locking a rear diff and stability control still being on, you know, despite you getting
27:36different wheel turning speeds. So yeah, I think this is all pretty good. In terms of the vehicle
27:44itself, so excellent value for money. You're getting a great interior here with all the latest bells
27:48and whistles. Areas they can improve, the lane keeping assistant, I just think needs a little bit
27:53of work there. The engine is a big step forward, but I don't think it's a massive leap forward.
27:59And they're really going to have to work on that if they want to compete properly with stuff like
28:02Ranger and Hilux. That's where it's really going to change. And the ride as well. The ride is just
28:06too firm. So we've got a fix coming for that in terms of Rob, who's going to start working on the
28:11product pretty soon. And I think that once they get that stuff sorted, I mean, this thing is going
28:16to be the bargain of the century. Under 50 grand for all of this, I think is a really impressive
28:22proposition. So let me know in the comments section below. What do you reckon about this?
28:25Have you bought one of these? How has it been? I am keen for your feedback. If you did enjoy the video,
28:29please make sure you like it and you share it with your mates. But until next time, take it easy.
