00:00Do want to continue about Dan Lanning and Oregon, Coach.
00:03This is back-to-back years.
00:05They just haven't lost in the college football playoff.
00:08Coach, they've gotten blown out.
00:10Through the regular season, we know potentially Dan Lanning is a dominant head coach.
00:15But in these spots where his team is coming off multiple weeks in terms of layoff,
00:21is it a problem of maybe game plan or is it a problem of just a hiatus of not playing football?
00:28Well, you know, he came in banged up.
00:31He came in without his running backs.
00:33He wasn't a complete football team at the end.
00:36And again, I mean, he had turnovers.
00:39You can't have turnovers.
00:40Now, a layoff, but he didn't have a layoff the week before.
00:43He had an excellent game the week before against Texas Tech.
00:46So you know what?
00:46When I look at it, they're disappointed.
00:48They're not winning the championship.
00:51But Dan Lanning's had his team in the final 12 two years in a row.
00:54And they were, I thought, a better team this year than they were last year,
00:58although they won the Big Ten last year.
01:00And they just turned the ball over and made mistakes.
01:03Now, I think he's got to look at that and not get – they've just got to continue to build
01:07because I still think when you look at the season overall,
01:11although they didn't do well in the playoffs again,
01:13or they didn't do well enough to get to the championship game,
01:17they played pretty good.
01:19They got to a semifinal game with probably the number one team in the country.
01:23And then he got after them.
01:26And I'm going to say this.
01:27People say, well, what's going to happen in the future?
01:30Every single team of the Big Ten is going to spend several months working on Indiana.
01:35Because if you don't beat Indiana, you don't win the Big Ten.
01:37They're going to get everybody's – it's like Nick Saban in Alabama.
01:41They now, after two years, they're going to get Oregon's best game.
01:44They're going to get everybody's best game.
01:46And I think Dan Lanning, he's – what, he's 51, 52 years old.
01:49He's going to get better – I'm sorry, he's 39 years old.
01:52He's going to get better every year as a young coach taking his team already
01:56two years in a row to the Final 12.
01:58Yeah, we have a graphic which shows basically the five stars and four stars
02:05for Indiana, Oregon, Ole Miss, and Miami.
02:09And it's quite glaring that Indiana, the number one overall seed,
02:13doesn't have any five-star talent, right?
02:15Like, Coach Cignetti says that they recruit three and four stars
02:19or two and three stars, and he coaches them up.
02:22He's looking for certain types of attributes in these players
02:26that they can actually coach up to a certain level,
02:30whereas some of the other coaches just want, you know,
02:32the recognizable names and the five-star talent to plug and play.
02:37That's not what Indiana and Kurt Cignetti are doing
02:40over the past couple of seasons.
02:41Well, and again, it's funny because I've been watching that
02:45because there's this old saying, do you win with X's and O's
02:47or do you win with Jimmy's and Joe's?
02:50Well, Indiana's all of a sudden – all these other coaches are having to look
02:53at Indiana and say, dadgum, they're winning with X's and O's.
02:56They're out coaching us.
02:58They're doing a better job with less NFL talent.
03:02And I think a lot has got to be said for Kurt Cignetti.
03:06And there's one big number, 62.
03:08That's how old he is.
03:09That's how long he's been doing this.
03:12I think a lot of the younger guys who go out there and think just by getting –
03:16by beating other teams on a four-star, on a five-star,
03:20you forget the fact that this guy's got to fit your system.
03:23He's got to fill a need.
03:24You've got to be deep in every position.
03:27I just think Kurt, knowing Kurt Cignetti, knowing where he's been,
03:31he understands you've got to have guys that fit into your system,
03:34that are very smart, great football IQ, and that they help you overall.
03:41And so I think he's got the right ingredient.
03:43I think he is forcing other – I mean, coaches don't like to give up 55 or 38.
03:48DeBoer, the same way.
03:50He has got everybody's attention, and they're going to think twice.
03:53With the number of four- and five-star players that he has,
03:56I think a lot of coaches are going to be looking at their staff,
03:59looking at Indiana, and said, what does he know that we don't know?
04:03What's he doing that we're not doing?
04:05And I think it's going to get back to it.
04:07I mean, it's not just Jimmy's and Joe's.
04:09It's X's and O's, too.
04:10We've got to do a better job.
