00:00You know, in the moment, you got to make a hard decision. And I decided to try to hold the
00:03line. There's a lot that comes with that. You know, just saying, hey, let them score right there. You know,
00:09as the head coach of your team, I decided to make that call. And ultimately, you know, love to have
00:15seen what it would look like if they would have scored, but made the decision. Just talking to him with
00:19Matt. And that was the decision we made. So, you know, we'll have to think about it when it happens
00:25again.
00:27I don't like the way he answered that at all. So here's my my thought after I listened to that
00:34and hearing it again. I think as a head coach, you're supposed to have some level of conviction in your
00:41decisions. And I don't feel like Ryan Day really believes that answer. We'll look at it. It didn't work.
00:50It feels like he's trying to placate a certain section of the Ohio State fan base. That is really mad
00:58that they didn't allow Texas to score to preserve the clock. Texas was all the way down to the one
01:06yard line, but a minute and a half left or a minute 20 left.
01:09You could have let them score. You could have let them score and then gotten the kickoff and potentially with
01:16the receiving talent you've got with Jeremiah Smith and whatnot, maybe gotten back into field goal range.
01:21But some people said the reason why he did not do that was because the field goal kicker had just
01:27missed a really important kick. So how much do you want to put it off the feet of one player
01:34versus putting it on your whole defense to stop the offense in that moment?
01:42I see both sides. I don't think Ryan Day has a solid answer for the question. And I think that's
01:51why he answered it in that way, saying Matt being Matt Patricia, the defensive coordinator, the next time that happens,
01:57we'll have to address it. We'll have to figure out what our real play is, which is somewhat lack of
02:03preparation, right?
02:04You would think there should be some level of consistency with, hey, when we are in this situation, here is
02:13my standing order. We're going to either allow them to score or we're not going to let them score. And
02:18if they score and they beat us, so be it. But I'm not going to put this on a kicker
02:22who has just missed a kick.
02:24Now, maybe Ryan Day said that privately to the coaching staff, but he won't say that publicly because he needs
02:29that kicker. Obviously, as they go forward this season, he needs to show that he has confidence in his special
02:35teams, but him storming off the podium when he was asked for his confidence level in special teams in the
02:41kicker tells you all we need to know about where Ryan Day is with his kicker.
02:47He does not trust his kicking game. So that's a huge problem going forward for Ohio State, who have some
02:53very big games coming up on the schedule in conference.
02:57This Texas game was a non-conference game. He's got big conference games to play coming up this season, including
03:04Michigan, who's playing really well.
03:06And Ryan Day finally beat Michigan last year. Well, now it's getting nerve wracking.
03:13I think if you're an Ohio State fan about what Ryan Day is saying publicly about his own decision making
03:19process in a crunch moment on the road at Texas.
03:24So I didn't love the answer. I didn't love the storming off the off the podium.
03:28And so I do think that there is some level of unrest going on inside that coaching staff about the
03:36way the game went, about the way the second half went, about the missed kick, and how things are going
03:42to go going forward for Ohio State.
03:44Not great.
