00:01Hello there, good evening. Lee Sobot at the Orchard Evening Post here from Hillsborough,
00:05signing out from Hillsborough where we have seen a very, very disappointing evening from a Leeds United perspective
00:11as they've exited the Carabao Cup at the first hurdle from their perspective at the second round stage
00:17after a 3-0 defeat on penalties against a very troubled Sheffield Wednesday outfit
00:22following a 1-1 draw and the game going straight to penalties.
00:25And when we say a very troubled Sheffield Wednesday outfit, obviously the financial problems here and everything
00:30are very, very well documented. What you would say is that they put in a fantastic shift
00:34and really, really fought for the shirt and for the club in that game.
00:37And I think, you know, although Leeds missed a lot of chances,
00:40I don't think anybody would begrudge them going through really.
00:43But from a Leeds United perspective, you know, that's very, very concerning.
00:47And especially really the first half, I thought. The first half, they just offered very, very little.
00:54You were struggling to even sort of like, you know, sort of think about anybody who did anything particularly positive
00:59or to get excited about. And yeah, that was extremely disappointing.
01:03As was the concession of the goal, which in the end stopped Leeds going through
01:07because otherwise Jadon Bogle's goal would have been a winner.
01:10Ball just coming in far too easy from the right flank down there.
01:15First shot saved, but not brilliantly by Darlow and then the second one just spilled over the line for what was a known goal.
01:20That was very, very disappointing. Leeds did get better as the game went on.
01:24Once basically what you would say that the big guns are like, if you like, came on, if there is such a thing.
01:29And they did have a lot of chances, but none of them were taken.
01:32Dominic Calvert-Lewin probably could have had a hat trick as he starts getting towards the game towards the end,
01:37but just couldn't find the back of the net.
01:39Nonto, very, very big spark when he came on.
01:42But it just looked like they weren't even going to get one until Jadon Bogle, who every time he plays he impresses me,
01:48took matters into his own hands really, charged forward as he did a couple of times.
01:52I think it was first shot blot. Nonto, absolutely superb pass from him to play in.
01:56Bogle, who finished very superbly obviously at this club, obviously against the rivals where he used to be at Sheffield United.
02:03It had to be him really. Celebrated like crazy in front of the away end, who probably thought then I'd go on and win it.
02:07And they probably should have done really with the chances they had, but they didn't.
02:10And yet again, that's another theme, as we've been talking about all summer so far, is a Leeds United attack.
02:15And will it be good enough? Is it strong enough?
02:17And Daniel Farke didn't hide from it again afterwards, basically saying that the attacking tonight wasn't top quality,
02:23but that he's sort of readily admitted that already so far this summer.
02:27And that basically, I think, means that they need to get more attackers in before Monday's transfer deadline.
02:32Noah Roquefort, one of them, did start tonight.
02:34He showed bits and bobs in the first half, but he did flatter to deceive a little bit.
02:38And it was a disappointing debut, really, but as he's not alone.
02:42I mean, you know, you're talking sort of not great performances all over from many of the Leeds players,
02:47apart from Bogle and Willy Nonto were the only two that stood out really.
02:52And they basically came on too late, but it shouldn't be, you know, up to those two to come on and try and sort things out.
02:58And the penalties was the other extreme disappointment.
03:00I mean, it goes about saying you have a penalty shootout.
03:02You take three penalties and you miss all three.
03:04I mean, it can't get any worse than that.
03:06The first one, Joel Perouse was just like pretty, like, too near the keeper, really.
03:10It was a good save.
03:11It was a soft penalty.
03:12Not great.
03:13The second one was the worst of the lot.
03:15Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
03:16He almost sensed miss after the evening he'd had in front of the goal and just absolutely ballooned it over the bar.
03:21Terrible penalty.
03:22And then Sean Longstaff, who was one player who didn't have a great game.
03:25Not, you know, as I say, he wasn't alone on that score.
03:28Very, very frustrating second half for him.
03:30You could see he was getting annoyed with some of the decisions and stuff.
03:32His penalty was saved as well.
03:34And that was it.
03:35Curtains.
03:36Good night, Vienna.
03:37And a 3-0 defeat on penalties.
03:38So, you know, I mean, it's, you know, extremely, extremely disappointing.
03:41There's other ways of looking at this, which is, like, you know, Leeds are unlikely to win the Carabao Cup.
03:45They could probably do without it in terms of, like, Premier League survival being the most important thing.
03:50That is definitely, definitely true.
03:51But, I mean, look, at the end of the day, like, with the players Sheffield Wednesday had out and stuff
03:56and, you know, the youth and experience in that team, I mean, they should have been putting them to the sword
04:00and putting them to the sword comfortably.
04:02Sheffield Wednesday were 20-1 for this fixture.
04:04I mean, they didn't win, but ultimately they've gone through.
04:07And it's a very, very disappointing night.
04:09Daniel Farker always speaks very well.
04:10He said afterwards, I asked him about a message for the fans.
04:12He said, look, they basically apologised that we say sorry anyhow a couple of times, which I think is fair enough.
04:17Basically, the bottom line of it, he said, was that they didn't take the chances.
04:21And when you think about it, that's probably true because they did have enough chances to win it, really.
04:25Well, convincingly in the second half.
04:27But that first half, especially, you know, the players who came in, they had a chance there and just very, very, very disappointing.
04:34The Arsenal defeat, I think, you know, was also disappointing, but I think people can take that, accept that a bit more maybe when you're playing a side like Arsenal,
04:41who will blow a lot of teams away.
04:43But this one will be hard to swallow, even though it's not as important as the league, just because obviously they were expected to win and the players they had out there should have been able to do that.
04:52One other bit of bad news, which is if you need any more this evening, was Yael Tanaka's injury.
04:56It is an MCL.
04:57It is going to be at least a few weeks.
04:58We'll have to wait and see, said Daniel Farker.
05:00It's basically the same as Ampadu's or similar.
05:02So he's going to be out for a little bit as well.
05:04So you're going to have him and Tanaka both, sorry, Tanaka and Ampadu both out at the same time, which is obviously not great for the midfield.
05:10Just hope that obviously Calvert-Lewin, you know, his confidence isn't hit by that.
05:13I don't think it will be.
05:14He's an experienced player.
05:15And if you're looking at positives, at least he's got minutes and he did like, you know, he did cause a threat.
05:20That's one thing you would say about him.
05:22He did disturb the defence and get into good areas, but he just couldn't score.
05:25Look, it's a night to forget.
05:27It doesn't get any easier.
05:28It's on to Newcastle United at the weekend at Ellyn Road.
05:30They have got a lot of injuries, though.
05:32And with the Ellyn Road crowd, anything is possible, I would say, at Ellyn Road.
05:35So who knows what we're going to get in that one.
05:37But it'll have to be an awful, an awful, an awful lot better here.
05:41An awful lot better in terms of the first half display and an awful lot better in terms of the second half finishing.
05:45Leeds United in the second round stage are out of the Carabao Cup.
05:49It's finished here this evening.
05:50Sheffield Wednesday 1, Leeds United 1, Sheffield Wednesday 3, Leeds United 0 on penalties.
05:55Bye for now.
