Leeds United writer Lee Sobot with his verdict on the goalless draw against Newcastle United at Elland Road and what the Whites need to stay up.

00:00Hello there, Lee Sobot of the Orchard Evening Post here from a very wet and

00:05rainy Ellen Road as we can see where Leeds United have just taken another

00:10point in their bid ultimately this is for Premier League survival obviously

00:14through a goal of straw against Newcastle United which I think at the

00:18start of the game I think most people probably would have taken obviously you

00:21want to get all three points but in a way a game that basically kind of

00:25summarises I think where Leeds are at the moment which is becoming a very solid

00:29side obviously notwithstanding very hard tests against teams like Arsenal away

00:33but especially here at Ellen Road very solid very tough very hard to beat very

00:37hard to break down but just needing a little bit more quality in that final

00:42third which was basically what Daniel Farka said in his post-match press

00:46conference where he said it like it was and said that if Leeds don't get another

00:49couple of additions before the transfer deadline Monday evenings transfer

00:53deadline of 7 p.m. then it'll be very difficult to stay up and I think he's hit

00:56the nail on the head basically I think that's totally right I mean

00:59that said Leeds did have chances to win the game here against Newcastle but so

01:03too did Newcastle and I don't know I think a draw maybe feels feels about

01:06right I suppose but yeah just a very solid you know display from Leeds and

01:10overall now that's four points from the first three games which when you

01:14consider you know they are three quite tough tests obviously Everton at home

01:17was the one where you felt like Leeds needed to get off to a good start and

01:20they did with that 1-0 victory Arsenal away was always going to be

01:23incredibly difficult obviously very disappointing the way that it ended in a

01:265-0 defeat the cup debacle at Sheffield Wednesday the less said about that the

01:30better but important that they got back on track here to some degree and they

01:33definitely have done that with a goalless draw and I think the reaction of the

01:36fans at the end inside another Full House Ellen Road crowd said it all where

01:40they were sort of like you know very warm reception at the end and applauded off

01:43the pitch and everything and yeah it's a good base to build on but definitely but

01:46just need a little bit more as I say in that final third probably you know two more

01:50attacking tidings really I think you know he's obviously keen to get somebody in

01:54who can play number 10 right winger and then if you can get somebody else and

01:57you can play up front whether they get another striker remains to be seen but

02:01it was Lucas Mecha got the nod up front today tonight and did pretty well up there

02:06you know holding the ball up pretty well Dominic Calvert-Lewin then replaced him

02:09and it looks a lot lot sharper for his outing the other night so plenty of

02:14positives there I think it's interesting what people's mind of the match is but

02:18Sean Longstaff was excellent in the middle of the park against his old team some

02:22real crunching tackles set the tone early on very very good defensively

02:25Goodmanson again had to go off injured hopefully that's not too serious so we

02:30also saw a debut for James Justin who came on to replace him towards the end but

02:35just a solid display all around against obviously a very very good Newcastle United

02:38side yes so missing a lot of star men obviously Anthony Gordon was suspended and

02:43so he missed out here obviously you know the East Act situation is well documented he

02:48wasn't here and there were other big players missing as well Joe Linton etc but

02:51still a very very good Newcastle team there's no doubt about that and Eddie Howe

02:56afterwards full of a lot of praise for Leeds and expects them to be very competitive

02:59this season and I think that's about right but they just as I say just

03:02probably need a couple more additions and I don't know about the last two days of

03:07Toronto window you know deciding Leeds this season but it might well do this is the

03:10Premier League it's very very hard to stay in it and you know that attacking quality in

03:13the final third really really could make the difference but in terms of this game

03:17I think everybody says fair play you know fought well very hard to bring you know

03:21look solid and you know definitely overall a step in the right direction

03:25there's three games gone there's already four points on the board which is happy

03:28days really at the moment finished here this evening Leeds United 0 Newcastle United 0
