06:36In the early evening of November 18th at the temple's headquarters in Georgetown,
07:01Temple member Sharon Amos received a radio communication from Jonestown instructing the members at the headquarters to take revenge on the temple's enemies and then commit revolutionary suicide.
07:16After police arrived at the headquarters, Sharon escorted her children, Leanne, 21, Krista, 11, and Martin, 10, into a bathroom.
07:27Wielding a kitchen knife, Sharon first killed Krista and then Martin.
07:34Then Leanne assisted Sharon in cutting her own throat, after which Leanne killed herself.
07:42Jones' sons, Stephen, Tim, and Jim Jr. eventually found them dead after they arrived at the temple headquarters in their efforts to return to Jonestown to stop the suicide.
07:54They, and other members of the Jonestown basketball team, had been away in Georgetown, where they played an exhibition match against the Guyanese national team.
08:05I hit the deck, I lie face down, I have my arm over my head, basically.
08:35As though you go to sleep with a baby, you know.
08:37One arm, my right arm was on my head like this, my left hand was this, and my face is pushed against, kissing the floor as close as possible.
08:44I don't want to move because I know they keep shooting.
08:46And next thing I heard, they walking towards us, one of the men.
08:50And somehow, one shot hit Bob Brown in the leg, I believe.
08:55I don't know what part of the body.
08:56He screamed, ouch!
08:57And caught shit or something, I don't know what he did.
09:01And next thing I know, the guy came close and blow his brain off.
09:06And next thing I know, I say, oh, next one will be me who get killed, right?
09:10So I just didn't think about it, I just think about my little daughter.
09:15The next thing I know, I have a tremendous pressure explosion right next to my head, and my arms just feel like falling apart.
09:21But I won't dare to move on one single muscle.
09:24That's probably what saved my life.
09:26I guess the real thing that saved my life is because my arms are ahead of my head, so the bullet missed the brain when it hit my arms instead.
09:32And I didn't move, and the blood was all over the place.
09:35So they thought I probably did.
09:36At the airstrip, San Francisco Examiner reporter Tim Riederman photographed the aftermath of the shootings.
09:45Dwyer assumed leadership at the scene, and at his recommendation, Larry Layton was arrested by Guyanese police.
09:54Dwyer was grazed by a bullet in his buttock during the shootings.
09:59It took several hours before the 11 wounded and others in their party gathered themselves together.
10:06Most of them spent the night in the Port Taituma Cafe.
10:10The more seriously wounded slept in a small tent at the airstrip.
10:15A Guyanese government plane arrived the following morning to evacuate the wounded.
10:20This is a Channel 7 News Scene special report with our continuing coverage of the People's Temple story and the murder of Congressman Leo Ryan.
10:28Now with the latest details, Van Emberg and Marsha Brandwin.
10:33Good evening. Here's what's happening.
10:34We're interrupting our special broadcasting to bring you this special report, a News Scene news break on the People's Temple mass suicides in Guyanese.
10:41Guyanese and the murder of Congressman Leo Ryan, I would mention to you now, tonight's movie will run in its entirety immediately following this special report.
10:48I also have to warn you as we begin this special report that what you're about to see almost defies description, and some of you may not want to watch it.
10:56As soon as these pictures from Jonestown cleared our newsroom, everybody, even a lot of hardened news people, reacted in horror and disbelief.
11:05The word on everybody's lips was shades of Auschwitz.
11:08These are the first pictures out of Guyanese on the incredible orgy of death that took place in the People's Temple agricultural mission at Jonestown.
11:16This is picture number one. This picture was taken from up high.
11:20It shows what the mass suicide looks like when over 400 cultists who believed in everything that Jim Jones said took their own lives.
11:28Now this picture was taken by an Associated Press photographer who was the first one back in there after the mass suicide murders.
11:35As you can see, bodies are strewn all over the place.
11:38This is inside one of the mission buildings.
11:41The bodies are laid out almost like everybody took the poison and then picked a place to be still somewhere until the poison took effect.
11:50The bodies are together in most of the places.
11:53This is a picture.
11:54One of the victims has an arm over another person's shoulder.
11:57Also in this picture, you will see to the right in the bottom of this picture, there is a man standing.
12:03And if we'll pan to that, right there at the man's feet is a dog, the form of a dog.
12:09That dog was also fed the cyanide poison and that dog then died along with the others.
12:14That's Guiani's man with a gas mask on looking at the absolute devastation of human life that took place inside Jonestown.
12:22Now we have more of the death scenes.
12:24The chair you're about to see there on the right in the lower right side of your picture, that's the back of a chair.
12:30That is the chair, the so-called throne chair, that was used by People's Temple leader Jim Jones.
12:38And over the chair, on the stage, in the middle of the compound, is the sign,
12:42those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
12:45Even when you know it's so, even when you see it, as we're seeing it right now, it is still unbelievable.
12:51While we're looking at the destruction of human life there, we are also getting word in from the State Department at this moment
12:58that there's more incredible news coming in, that at least 14 people survived that mass slaughter at Jonestown
13:05and they have just now crawled out of the dense jungle surrounding the People's Temple compound
13:09where 405 other people were found dead.
13:12We're not going to look at the organization.
13:13We're not going to look at the airline, but the equipment is pretty good.
13:18We're not going to look at the airline.
13:19We're looking at the airline, but we're looking at people.
13:20Take it off, please.
13:22Move back, please.
13:23Move back.
13:25Make it off.
13:25Should we talk to you, gentlemen?
13:26Of course.
13:27Call them straight down.
13:28Call them straight down.
13:29All our cameras to the main airport.
13:31Good.
13:32All our cameras will be made in court.
13:34Move back, gentlemen.
13:38Move back, gentlemen.
13:40Move back, sir.
13:41I don't want to see what's coming right now.
14:11Can you say what you're going to tell him for?
14:14I'm going to tell him the truth.
14:16You are going to testify?
14:18I'm going to also pay for whatever we know.
14:21Can you give us your name?
14:23I don't want to say anything right now.
14:29I lost six months.
14:30That's all I want you to say.
14:32What relationship were they to you?
14:34I lost my mother, Pauline.
14:38I lost my brother, 21.
14:40I lost another brother, 24.
14:42I lost my wife.
14:44I lost a child that was two years old.
14:47Your child?
14:48Yes, another child that was seven months.
14:50Seven months old child?
14:52What regrets do you have, if any, about the whole experience?
14:55I have nothing.
14:56Were you in Georgetown at the time?
14:57No, I was in Georgetown at the time.
14:59Were you on the basketball team?
15:00No, I wasn't on the basketball team.
15:01Why were you in Georgetown as opposed to Jonestown?
15:04Well, I was taking care of medical people.
15:06I have teeth work, medical work done in Georgetown.
15:08Matt, when did you get word on your losing your family and how?
15:11Um, just a lot.
15:12Oh!
15:12Oh!
15:12Oh!
15:13Oh!
15:13Oh!
15:14Oh!
15:14Oh!
15:15Oh!
15:15Oh!
15:16Oh!
15:16Oh!
15:17Oh!
15:17Oh!
15:18Oh!
15:18Oh!
15:19Oh!
15:19Oh!
15:20Never any inkling that such a thing would happen, a mass suicide.
15:24Everything seemed to be going so well.
15:45You know, during the mass suicide, but I just, you know, tell them as I saw it that the children were, like, blossoming there, and they were just doing beautifully, and they were so bright, and seniors were well taken care of, and the doctors checking on the children all the time, it just, um, I don't know what it is that went wrong, but when it was functioning, you know, when it was, when I was there, it was the most beautiful experience.
16:15For any of the children.
16:17What are you going to do now?
16:18I don't know, it's going to be hard to get a job, I would think, but, um, I don't know.
16:21Would you think about living in the temple again?
16:23No.
16:23Why not?
16:25Um, as far as I know, the temple's being disbanded, and so, I don't really know.
16:28See, we've been in Guyana for all this time, I don't really know exactly what's going on.
16:32He would even be able to make an educated guess what's going to happen from this point on.
16:36How long had you been in Georgetown as opposed to Jonestown?
16:38About two months.
16:39You had moved into the house in Georgetown?
16:41Right.
16:41Do you have any idea what happened that night with Sharon Amos and all of that?
16:46Were you in that house?
16:47No, I was out of the house that evening, and when I got there, the police were already there,
16:50so, I don't know, you know, other than that.
16:52Does being out of the house, do you think, saved your life?
16:55No, because there are 46 of us who were, you know, like, in the area, I mean, in Georgetown
16:59at the time.
17:0046 survivors besides Sharon and her family.
17:03What do you think about these victims?
17:04Can you tell us about this?
17:05Is that possible?
17:06No, I think right now there's been so much death and violence that nobody's interested
17:12in the least of having any more die in any area, no matter what's gone on in the past.
17:17I think it's just really unreasonable to think that people have been through as much trauma
17:20as anyone associated with people's temple right now would have anything involved with
17:24that.
17:24I think it's just an illusion or something.
17:26I think anybody who has sensitivity to see what we've been through would think that we
17:30wouldn't do that.
17:30What do you want to do with your life now?
17:31Well, I've learned to have some commitment to something other than myself, and at this
17:36point I don't know what the next step is.
17:37I know I can't just live, like, selflessly for myself, but I don't know really exactly
17:41what to go into.
17:42Do you have family here in the Bay Area that you can live with?
17:45Yeah, I have family here.
17:46Can we get your name, please?
17:47Laura Johnston.
17:48Laura L.A.
17:48Lauren.
17:49U-R-A.
17:50U-R-A.
17:51Stephen, and you love them, concerned about them.
17:54There's something like 400, maybe, roughly 350, I don't know, who are out somewhere in
17:59the bush.
18:00What are they likely to do?
18:01What is their, what plan?
18:03Are they leaderless now?
18:05Will they have to sort of organize their own leadership?
18:07Are they capable of doing it, like young people, old people?
18:10Was there a continued plan if something happened to go somewhere in the bush?
18:14No, we never dreamed that this would happen.
18:18As for, I can only say what I would do, I mean, I would be scared.
18:22I would be scared to death, just as anyone else would be here, you know, I mean, considering
18:26the circumstances, but I don't know how they'll react.
18:29He claimed he was, he claimed he was afraid of nothing, which I know is bold.
18:35He's a very frightened man.
18:36He claimed that, I don't know, he had no ego, which is the total opposite.
18:47He had one of the biggest egos I've ever seen in my life.
18:49But I think he was, that's another reason.
18:56I felt he was, he did so much, you know, I felt he was, he feared for his life so much
19:01that he would never do anything like this.
19:03914 of the 918 dead, including Jones himself, were collected by the United States military
19:13in Guyana, then transported by military cargo plane to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware,
19:20a location that had been used previously for mass processing of the dead from the Tenerife
19:25airport disaster.
19:27Does anybody, anybody hear of Tenerife?
19:29In 1977, two fully loaded 747s crashed into each other on Tenerife.
19:37Way bigger than a 737, and we're talking about two of them.
19:41Nearly 600 people died in Tenerife.
19:44The last shipment of bodies arrived early on the morning of November 27th, 1978.
19:52The base's mortuary was tasked with fingerprinting, identifying, and processing the bodies.
19:59The base's resources were overwhelmed, and numerous individuals tasked with moving or identifying
20:06the bodies suffered symptoms of PTSD.
20:09In August 2014, the never-claimed cremated remains of nine people from Jonestown were found
20:18in a former funeral home in Dover.
20:21As of September 2014, four of their remains had been returned to next of kin, and the remaining
20:27five had not.
20:29Those five were publicly identified in the hope that family would claim their remains.
20:34All five remain unclaimed by family, and have been interred at the Jonestown Memorial at
20:41Evergreen Cemetery in Oakland, California, along with the remains of approximately half of those
20:48who perished on November 18th, 1978.
20:52Just before dawn, a van carrying 50 victims arrived at Evergreen Cemetery.
20:58Inside, small pine boxes containing 45-inch steel caskets to be placed in cement crypts.
21:06These are the bodies of unidentified children.
21:09In place of names, just numbers on the boxes.
21:13This is the first of 248 unidentified followers to be buried here.
21:18Other cemeteries had refused.
21:20The containers were moved into the 60 by 80 foot mass grave, which will have a single marker.
21:25Relatives came to watch.
21:29To Lawrence Brown's four grandchildren were never identified.
21:33She said they had to be here, somewhere.
21:36Council of Churches held brief services.
21:39Services they will repeat.
21:40Four more van loads are scheduled here.
21:43The spirit of the departed has returned to God, who gave it.
21:48We therefore commit body to the ground, earth to earth, ashes to ashes, and dust to dust.
22:07Larry Leighton, who had fired a gun at several people aboard the Cessna,
22:12was initially found not guilty of attempted murder in a Guyanese court.
22:17Quote, employing the defense that he was, quote, brainwashed, unquote.
22:23Acquittal in a Guyanese court did not free Leighton, who was promptly deported back to the U.S.
22:30and arrested by the U.S. Marshals Service upon arrival in San Francisco.
22:34Layton could not be tried in the U.S. for the attempted murders of Gosney, Bagby, Dale Parks, and the Cessna pilot on Guyanese soil and was instead tried under a federal statute against assassinating members of Congress and internationally protected people Ryan and Dwyer.
22:56Paroled in 2002, he is the only person ever to have been held criminally responsible for the events at Jonestown.
23:13The Cult Awareness Network, CAN, a group aimed at deprogramming members of cults, was formed soon after the Jonestown deaths.
23:24The group, which included Congressman Ryan's daughter, Patricia, was involved in various personal, social, and legal battles with a range of religious organizations from The Family International and Scientology.
23:39Something happened to you? Something happened to you? Something happened to you? I'm in love. Have you ever felt this way before?
24:00You're gone. You are gone. Fear not. You know Katie once told Seventeen magazine.
24:06To David Koresh's Branch Davidians, where they were found to be influential on law enforcement's concerns for children in the eventual Waco siege in 1993.
24:19After a slew of legal and fiscal issues, CAN went bankrupt in 1996.
24:26Although Jones used poisoned flavor aid, the drink mix was also commonly, mistakenly, referred to as Kool-Aid.
24:34This has led to the phrase, drinking the Kool-Aid, referring to a person or group, holding an unquestioned belief, argument, or philosophy, without critical examination.
24:45Do you have any sense that that privilege has isolated and put you in a cave to a certain extent?
25:04Is it put me, and I think lots of white, privileged people, in a cave, and that we have to work our way out of it to understand the anger and the pain, particularly black people feel in this country?
25:21No, you really drank the Kool-Aid, didn't you? He's listened to you. Wow. No, I don't feel that at all.
25:28He was ridiculing me for reflecting what the whole movement after George Floyd is.
25:42Ietinum.
25:53Yeah, oooh!
25:55This has helped me get a fight.
25:57That sounded like a casino shot.
25:59Ooooooh!
