00:00The concoction was prepared with the help of Jonestown's in-house doctor, Larry Schacht,
00:06a Texan native and a former methamphetamine addict, who got sober with the help of Jones,
00:12who subsequently paid for his college education to become a doctor.
00:17Schacht had been researching the best ways for a person to die in advance of foreseen mass suicide.
00:24About 30 minutes after Marceline Jones' announcement, Jim Jones made his own, calling all members immediately to the pavilion.
00:38A 44-minute cassette tape, known as the Death Tape, records part of the meeting Jones called inside the pavilion in the early evening of November 18, 1978.
00:50When the assembly gathered, referring to the Ryan delegation's air travel back to Georgetown,
00:57Jones told the gathering,
00:58One of those people on that plane is going to shoot the pilot. I know that. I didn't plan it, but I know it's going to happen.
01:05They're going to shoot that pilot, and down comes the plane into the jungle,
01:09and we better not have any of our children left when it's over, because they'll parachute in here on us.
01:14On the tape, Jones urged Temple members to commit what he called revolutionary suicide.
01:23Such an act had been planned by the Temple before, and, according to Jonestown DeFactors,
01:29its theory was, quote,
01:31You can go down in history, saying you chose your own way to go,
01:36and it is your commitment to refuse capitalism and in support of socialism.
01:41According to escaped Temple member Odell Rhodes, the first to take the poison were Ruletta Paul and her one-year-old infant.
01:53A syringe without a needle fitted was used to squirt poison into the infant's mouth,
01:59after which Paul squirted another syringe into her own mouth.
02:04Stanley Clayton also witnessed mothers with their babies first approach the tub containing the poison.
02:12Clayton said that Jones approached people to encourage them to drink the poison,
02:17and that after adults saw the poison begin to take effect, quote,
02:21They showed a reluctance to die, unquote.
02:25The poison caused death within five minutes for children, less for babies, and an estimated 20 to 30 for adults.
02:34After consuming the poison, people were then escorted away down a wooden walkway leading outside the pavilion.
02:43It is not clear if some initially thought the exercise was another white night rehearsal.
02:49Rhodes reported being in close contact with dying children.
02:56Rhodes described a scene of both hysteria and confusion,
02:59as parents watched their children die from the poison.
03:04He also stated that most present, quote,
03:07Quietly waited their own turn to die,
03:09and that many of the assembled Temple members, quote,
03:13Walked around like they were in a trance, unquote.
03:16Survivor Tim Carter has suggested that
03:19That day's lunch of grilled cheese sandwiches may have been tainted with sedatives.
03:24This crowd was surrounded by armed guards,
03:28offering members the basic dilemma of death by poison or death by a guard's hand.
03:35Cries and screams of children and adults were easily heard on the tape recording made.
03:40How very much I've loved you.
03:53How very much I've tried my best to give you the good life.
03:58But in spite of all of what I've tried,
04:10a handful of our people with their lives
04:14have made our life impossible.
04:19There's no way to detach ourselves from what's happened today.
04:22Not only we're in a compound situation,
04:28not only are there those who have left and committed the betrayal of the century,
04:34some have stolen children from others and they're in pursuit right now to kill them
04:39because they stole their children.
04:42And we are sitting here waiting on a powder keg.
04:45I don't think this is what we want to do with our babies.
04:50I don't think that's what we had in mind to do with our babies.
04:54It was said by the greatest of prophets from time immemorial,
04:58no man takes my life from me,
05:00I lay my life down.
05:03So to sit here and wait for the catastrophe that's going to happen on that airplane,
05:08it's going to be a catastrophe.
05:10Almost happened here.
05:12Almost happened.
05:13The congressman was nearly killed here.
05:15But you can't steal people's children.
05:18You can't take off with people's children without expecting a violent reaction.
05:25And that's not so unfamiliar to us either.
05:28Even if we were Judeo-Christian, if we weren't communists,
05:33the world, the kingdom, suffers violence,
05:36and the violence shall take it by force.
05:39If we can't live in peace, then let's die in peace.
05:43We've been so betrayed.
05:51We have been so terribly betrayed.
05:53Because what's going to happen here in a matter of a few minutes
05:56is that one of those people on that plane is going to shoot the pilot.
06:00I know that.
06:01I didn't plan it, but I know it's going to happen.
06:04They're going to shoot that pilot,
06:06and down comes that plane into the jungle.
06:08And we had better not have any of our children left when it's over,
06:13because they'll parachute in here on us.
06:17I'm telling you, just as plain as I know how to tell you,
06:19I've never lied to you.
06:21I never have lied to you.
06:22I know that's what's going to happen.
06:25That's what he intends to do.
06:27And he will do it.
06:29He'll do it.
06:32Fortunately, being so bewildered with many, many pressures on my brain,
06:37seeing all these people behave so treasonous,
06:39it was just too much for me to put together.
06:41But I now know what he was telling me,
06:45and it'll happen if the plane gets in the air even.
06:50So my opinion is that we'll be kind to children
06:55and be kind to seniors
06:56and take the portion like they used to take in ancient Greece
07:00and step over quietly,
07:03because we are not committing suicide.
07:06It's a revolutionary act.
07:08We can't go back.
07:10They won't leave us alone.
07:12They're now going back to tell more lies,
07:14which means more congressmen,
07:16and there's no way, no way we can survive.
07:22Anybody wish...
07:23Anyone that has any dissenting opinion,
07:27please speak.
07:30Yes.
07:33You can have an opportunity,
07:34but if our children are left,
07:36we are going to have them butchered.
07:39We can make a strike,
07:40but we'll be striking against people
07:42that we don't want to strike against.
07:44We'd like to get the people who cause this stuff.
07:47And if some people here are prepared
07:50to know how to do that,
07:52to go in town and get Timothy Stone,
07:53but there's no plane.
07:57There's no plane.
07:58You can't catch a plane in time.
08:03He's responsible for it.
08:05He brought these people to us.
08:07He and Deanna Myrtle.
08:09But people in San Francisco
08:11will not be idle over this.
08:17They'll not take our death in vain, you know.
08:19Yes, Christine.
08:23Is it too late for Russia?
08:26Here's why it's too late for Russia.
08:28They killed.
08:29They started to kill.
08:31That's why it makes it too late for Russia.
08:33Otherwise, I'd said,
08:35Russia, you bet your life.
08:37But it's too late.
08:38I can't control these people.
08:39They're out there.
08:40They've gone with their guns,
08:42and it's too late.
08:44I've been living on hope
08:45for a long time, Christine,
08:47and I appreciate you.
08:47You've always been a very good agitator.
08:50I like agitation
08:50because you've got tasty
08:52two sides of a question.
08:55But what those people are going to get done,
08:57what they get through,
08:58will make our life worse than hell.
09:00It'll make the Russians not accept us
09:03when they get through lying.
09:05They told so many lies
09:06between there and that truck
09:09that we are done in
09:11as far as any other alternative.
09:18Well, I said,
09:19let's make an airlift to Russia.
09:21That's what I say.
09:22I don't think nothing is impossible.
09:24How are we going to airlift to Russia?
09:28Well, I thought they said
09:30if we got in an emergency,
09:31they gave you a code to let them know.
09:33No, they did.
09:34They gave us the code
09:34that they'd let us know of an issue,
09:37not else create an issue for them.
09:39They said if they saw the country coming down,
09:43they'd give us the code.
09:46They'd give us the code.
09:47You can check on there
09:47and see if it's on the code.
09:49You can check with Russia
09:50to see if they'll take us in immediately,
09:51otherwise we'd die.
09:52I don't know what else you say to these people.
09:55But to me,
09:56death is not a fearful thing.
09:58it's living is treacherous.
10:06As a young converted Christian,
10:10Church of God and Christ
10:12had of us who were unmarried,
10:14we had to live with senior mothers,
10:17they were called.
10:18And they were our mentors.
10:20Mine was Sister Booker.
10:23Arlene Booker was her name.
10:25And living with us
10:28was Christine Miller,
10:30myself,
10:31and three of the girls
10:33from Church of God and Christ
10:34that were young,
10:35like we were in our late teens.
10:38Now, you mentioned Christine Miller.
10:40This is somebody who
10:42eventually would be
10:43with Jim Jones in Guyana.
10:45That is correct.
10:46Okay.
10:47Christine Miller was,
10:48she was a school teacher.
10:50She taught fifth grade.
10:52She loved children.
10:53She was a really,
10:55really nice lady.
10:55She was a blessing to me
10:57because she helped me.
10:59I wasn't very good in school
11:01with academics.
11:04And she was very patient with me.
11:06And she helped me in that area.
11:08Arlene Booker was very patient with me.
11:10And she helped me on a spiritual level.
11:13And how I got to go to
11:16the Jim Jones meetings
11:18was because Arlene Booker
11:20and Christine Miller
11:22were both going to his meeting.
11:25Christine Miller was a secretary
11:28to Jim Jones at that time.
11:30And he used to come to the house
11:33and he would pray with us
11:34and he would minister to us.
11:36He was trying to get us
11:38to join his congregation.
11:41Okay.
11:42So about what year is this?
11:44This is 66.
11:49When I first met Jim Jones,
11:51I don't think he had went insane yet
11:53because he was very much
11:56a community activist.
11:59He fed the hungry.
12:01He built apartments
12:04and housing for the homeless.
12:09He helped single moms.
12:11He was really active.
12:14And all of the black communities,
12:18especially,
12:19and the Hispanic communities,
12:22these are poor communities
12:23because that's where he helped.
12:26They really embraced him.
12:28So the churches in those areas
12:31embraced him as well.
12:33This gentleman must have been
12:33very charismatic
12:34to convince all these people
12:36to follow him,
12:38give him everything they owned.
12:40You would absolutely love him
12:41had you had an opportunity
12:42to meet him.
12:45He could make you feel
12:46so good about yourself, Justin.
12:49You know,
12:50Arlene had to be a little tough with us
12:53because she was teaching us.
12:55It's just like a parent raising a kid.
12:58So Jim Jones had a way of talking to you
13:03and letting you know
13:04how precious you are to God
13:06and how much God loves you
13:08and what a wonderful job you're doing.
13:11And he loves you too.
13:13And he recognized your talent.
13:15And he'd say,
13:16and I know how great you are
13:19to the kingdom of God.
13:20You really need to be with us.
13:23She's just, you know,
13:25a little bit bitter.
13:26He would start telling me
13:28things about her.
13:29Planning those scenes.
13:30Yes.
13:31And he would tell me
13:32how bitter she was
13:34because her husband
13:35had abandoned her
13:37at a young age
13:37and she had to raise
13:39those kids by herself.
13:41And I thought,
13:42yeah, he's right.
13:45I started believing it
13:47for a little bit.
13:48And he really saw
13:50those people as his people.
13:51You know, when he was,
13:54I have been in conversations
13:56with him
13:57when he was talking to us
13:59about joining the church
14:00and he was talking to Arlene
14:01and he was telling Arlene,
14:03you know this is what's best
14:04for all of you.
14:06And he says,
14:06you're my people.
14:09I know you're my people.
14:11And so he saw those people
14:15as his people.
14:16and really belonging to him
14:19because he treated Christine
14:21like a possession.
14:22And I'm telling you,
14:23he was really good at it
14:25and she really loved it too.
14:27And for people like her
14:29or myself
14:30or I'm sure a lot of those
14:32other people
14:32that died with him
14:33that didn't get the right
14:35nurturing and love
14:37as young kids growing up
14:39or, you know,
14:40your parents are working,
14:42nobody's got time
14:42to give you any special attention.
14:44he really knew
14:46how to make you feel
14:47like you were
14:47the only person
14:48on the whole world.
14:49Pretty good at manipulation
14:50it sounds like.
14:51He was excellent.
14:52He was a master at it.
14:54I've never seen people
14:55take the law
14:56and do in their own hands
14:58and provoke us
14:59and try to purposely
15:00agitate murder of children.
15:03You know, Christine,
15:04it's just not,
15:05it's not worth living like this.
15:07It's not worth living like this.
15:10I think that there were
15:11too few who left
15:13for 1,200 people
15:14to give them their lives
15:15for those people
15:16that left.
15:17You know how many left?
15:19Hmm, 20 odd.
15:21That's, that's a small
15:22amount of
15:23compared to what year.
15:2720 odd.
15:28But what's going to happen
15:29when they don't leave?
15:32I hope that they could leave
15:33but what's going to happen
15:34when they don't leave?
15:36You mean the people here?
15:38Yeah, what's going to happen
15:38to us when they don't leave
15:39when they get on the plane
15:40and the plane goes down?
15:41I don't think
15:43it'll go down.
15:44You don't think
15:44it'll go down?
15:47I, I wish I could tell you
15:49you were right
15:49but I'm right.
15:51That plane will come
15:52out of the air.
15:52There's no way
15:53you fly planes
15:54without a pilot.
15:55I wasn't speaking
15:56about that plane.
15:57I was speaking
15:58about the plane
15:59for us to go to Russia.
16:01How?
16:01Do you think Russia's
16:09going to want
16:10no, not going to
16:11you think Russia's
16:14going to want us
16:15with all this stigma?
16:18We had, we had some value
16:19but now we don't have
16:20any value.
16:22Well, I don't see it
16:23like that.
16:23I mean, I feel like that
16:24as long as there's life
16:26there's hope.
16:27That's my fate.
16:28Well, some, everybody dies.
16:30Some place that hope
16:31runs out
16:31because everybody dies.
16:35I haven't seen anybody
16:36yet didn't die.
16:38And I like to choose
16:39my own kind of death
16:40for a change.
16:41I'm tired of being
16:42tormented to hell.
16:43That's what I'm tired of.
16:46Tired of it.
16:49It's all for the people's
16:50lives in my hands
16:51and I certainly don't
16:52want your life
16:53in my hands
16:53but I'm going to tell you
16:54Christine, without me
16:55life has no meaning.
16:58I'm the best friend
17:00you'll ever have.
17:02Once, once, I have to pay.
17:05I'm standing with you, Jara.
17:06I'm standing with those people.
17:08They're part of me.
17:10I can detach myself.
17:11My attorney says,
17:11detach myself.
17:12No, no, no, no, no, no.
17:13I never detached myself
17:15from any of your troubles.
17:17I've always taken your troubles
17:18right on my shoulders.
17:21And I'm not going to
17:22change that now.
17:23It's too late.
17:23I've been running too long.
17:24I'm not going to change now.
17:25Maybe the next time
17:29you'll get to go to Russia,
17:30the next time around.
17:32We have no other road.
17:33I will take your call.
17:35We will put it to the Russians
17:36and I can tell you
17:38the answer now
17:38because I'm a prophet.
17:40Call the Russians
17:41and tell them
17:42to see if they'll take us.
17:43I said I'm afraid to die.
17:46I don't think you are.
17:47I don't think you are.
17:48But I look at our babies
17:51and I think they deserve to live.
17:53I agree.
17:54You know?
17:55But also they deserve.
17:56What's more?
17:57They deserve peace.
18:00We all came here for peace.
18:02And have we had it?
18:04No.
18:05I tried to give it to you.
18:06I've laid down my life practically.
18:08I practically died every day
18:09to give you peace.
18:10And you still not had any peace.
18:12You look better than I've seen you
18:13in a long while
18:13but it's still not the kind of peace
18:15that I wanted to give you.
18:17A person's a fool
18:19that continues to say
18:20that you're a winner
18:21when you're losing.
18:27When you...
18:28When you...
18:29When we destroy ourselves
18:30we're defeated.
18:32We let them, the enemy,
18:34defeat us.
18:34Did you see...
18:35Did you see I live to fight
18:36no more forever?
18:37Yes, I saw that.
18:38Did you not have some sense
18:40of pride and victory
18:41in that man?
18:42He would not subject himself
18:44to the will and whim
18:45of people who tell...
18:46That they're going to come in
18:47whenever they please
18:48and push into our house.
18:50Come when they please.
18:51Take who they want to.
18:52Talk to who they want to.
18:54Is this not living?
18:55That's not living to me.
18:57I'm speaking here
18:58not as the administrator.
19:01I'm speaking as a prophet today.
19:03I wouldn't step in this seat
19:04and talk so serious
19:05if I didn't know
19:06what I was talking about.
19:07If there's any way
19:09to call back
19:10the immense amount
19:12of damage
19:12that's going to be done.
19:14But I cannot separate myself
19:16from the pain of my people.
19:17You can't either, Christine,
19:18if you stop and think about it.
19:19You can't separate yourself.
19:20We've walked too long together.
19:24I know that
19:25but I still think
19:26as an individual
19:26I have a right
19:28to...
19:28You do
19:29and I'm listening.
19:30...what I think
19:31what I feel
19:31and I think
19:32we all have a right
19:33to our own destiny
19:35as individuals.
19:36Right.
19:37And I think
19:38I have a right
19:38to choose mine
19:39and everybody else
19:40has a right
19:40to choose theirs.
19:41Mm-hmm.
19:42You know?
19:43Mm-hmm.
19:44I'm not criticizing.
19:45I'm not doing that.
19:47What's that?
19:47You talk like
19:49the one that he wants
19:50to go ahead.
19:54You're all individualized.
19:56That's what you're saying.
19:57That's what you're saying.
19:58That's what 20 people
19:59said today
19:59with their lives.
20:00I think
20:01I still have a right
20:02to my own opinion.
20:03I'm not taking it from you.
20:05I'm not taking it from you.
20:06Christine,
20:07you're only standing here
20:10because he
20:10was here
20:12in the first place.
20:13So I don't know
20:13what you're talking about
20:14having an individual life.
20:16your life
20:17has been extended
20:18to the day
20:18that you're standing there
20:20because of him.
20:23Oh, it's back there.
20:24She has much right
20:24to speak to anybody else too.
20:26What'd you say, Luby?
20:28Well, you'll regret it
20:29this very day
20:30if you don't die.
20:32You'll regret it
20:33if you don't die.
20:34You'll regret it.
20:36Too many people.
20:38I saved them.
20:39I saved them.
20:40But I made my example.
20:42I made my expression.
20:43I made my manifestation.
20:45And the world
20:45was ready
20:46not ready for me.
20:47Paul said
20:48I was a man
20:48born out of due season.
20:49I've been born
20:50out of due season
20:51just like all we are.
20:52And the best testimony
20:53we can make
20:53is to leave
20:54this goddamn world.
21:00You must be scared to die.
21:02I'm not talking to her.
21:03Will you let her
21:04or let me talk?
21:05You're talking.
21:06Would you make her sit down
21:07and let me talk
21:08while I'm on the floor
21:09or let her talk?
21:12Property tell the leader
21:13what to do.
21:14It really is.
21:14And you wouldn't be
21:19no fucking good
21:20in Russia
21:20goddammit.
21:21How you care
21:22about it?
21:22That's him.
21:24All right.
21:29Now everybody hold it.
21:30We didn't come.
21:31Hold it.
21:31Hold it.
21:31Hold it.
21:33Hold it.
21:34Much longer maintain.
21:36To lay down your burdens.
21:40I'm going to lay down
21:41my burdens
21:42down by the riverside.
21:43So we lay them down
21:44here in the side of Guyana.
21:46What's the difference?
21:50No man didn't take our life
21:51right now.
21:52He hasn't taken it.
21:53But when they start
21:54parachuting out of the air,
21:55they'll shoot
21:56some of our innocent babies.
21:57I'm not going to assist
21:58to this, Christine.
21:59And we're all ready to go.
22:02If you tell us we have
22:03to give our lives now,
22:05we're ready.
22:06I'm pretty sure all the rest
22:07of the brothers
22:08are with me.
22:11A month I've tried
22:12to keep this thing
22:12from happening,
22:13but I know it's the will
22:15of sovereign being
22:17that this happened to us.
22:18that we lay down
22:20our lives in protest
22:21against what's being done.
22:24That we lay down
22:24our lives to protest
22:25in what's being done.
22:27The criminality of people,
22:29the cruelty of people.
22:30Who walked out
22:31of here today?
22:32Did you notice
22:33who walked out?
22:35Mostly white people.
22:39Mostly white people
22:40walked.
22:43I'm so grateful
22:44for the ones that didn't,
22:45those who knew
22:45who they are.
22:47But there's no,
22:47there's no point,
22:49there's no point to this.
22:50We are born
22:52before our time.
22:55They won't accept us.
22:57And I don't think
22:58we should sit here
22:59and take any more time
23:00for our children
23:01to be endangered
23:02because they come
23:03after our children
23:04and we give them
23:05our children,
23:06then our children
23:07will suffer forever.
23:12And I don't,
23:13what I do,
23:14I do with weight
23:15and justice
23:16and judgment.
23:17I've waited
23:20against all evidence.
23:24Okay,
23:25that's all I've got to say.
23:26What comes now, folks?
23:27What comes now?
23:30Everybody hold it.
23:31Stay here, stay,
23:32stay peace.
23:33Stay peace.
23:34Stay peace.
23:34Stay peace.
23:35Stay peace.
23:36What's come?
23:37Don't let this.
23:38Just take Dwyer
23:39on down to the
23:39East House.
23:41Take Dwyer.
23:42Everybody be quiet, please.
23:45I know you've got some
23:46respect for our lives.
23:49That means sit down,
23:51sit down,
23:52sit down.
23:54I know.
23:54I try so very,
24:03very hard.
24:04We're trying over here
24:05to see what can happen
24:07in Los Angeles.
24:07Who is it?
24:08Who is it?
24:08Come on, Carl.
24:09Let's go.
24:09Ryan Brown.
24:10Good night.
24:12About 10 of our folks.
24:15Gather in, folks.
24:16It's easy.
24:17It's easy.
24:20When the Red Brigade members
24:22came back to Jonestown
24:24after Ryan's murder,
24:26Tim Carter,
24:26a Vietnam War veteran,
24:28recalled them having
24:29the thousand-yard stare
24:31of weary soldiers.
24:34After Jones confirmed
24:36that the congressman's dead,
24:39no dissent is heard
24:40on the death tape.
24:43By this point,
24:45armed guards
24:45had taken up positions
24:47surrounding the pavilion area.
24:49Yes, my love.
24:50At one time,
24:56I felt just like
24:57Christine felt.
24:59But after today,
25:00I don't feel anything
25:02because the biggest majority
25:04of the people
25:05that left here
25:06were white.
25:07And I know
25:08it really hurt my heart
25:11because it broke my heart
25:13to think that
25:14all these years
25:16that these white people
25:17have been with us
25:19and they're not
25:21a part of us.
25:22So we might as well
25:23end it now
25:25because I don't see...
25:28The congressman
25:29has been murdered.
25:34Stay out.
25:38I'm ready.
25:43It's all over.
25:45It's all over.
25:46All over.
25:49What a legacy.
25:51What a legacy.
25:53About the Red Brigade,
25:54the only ones
25:54that ever made any sense anyway.
25:56They invaded our privacy.
25:58They came into our home.
25:59They followed us
26:006,000 miles away.
26:02The Red Brigade
26:03showed them justice.
26:04The congressman's dead.
26:11Please get us the medication.
26:13It's simple.
26:14It's simple.
26:14There's no convulsions with it.
26:16It's just simple.
26:16Just please get it.
26:17Before it's too late,
26:18the GDF will be here.
26:19I tell you,
26:20get moving.
26:20Get moving.
26:21Get moving.
26:26Don't be afraid to die.
26:27If these people land out here,
26:29they'll torture
26:30some of our children here.
26:31They'll torture our people.
26:32They'll torture our seniors.
26:33We cannot have this.
26:35Are you going to separate yourself
26:37from whoever shot the congressman?
26:38I don't know who shot him.
26:39Oh, God Almighty, God Almighty.
26:51Hmm?
26:53Patty Parks is dead?
26:54It is.
26:56Do you have any others
27:08to endure long enough
27:09in a safe place
27:10to write about
27:11the goodness of Jim Jones?
27:13I don't know how in the world
27:14they're ever going to write about us.
27:15It's just too late.
27:17It's too late.
27:18The congressman's dead.
27:19The congressman's dead.
27:20Many of our traitors are dead.
27:22They're all laying out.
27:23They're dead.
27:25Hmm?
27:26Good, good.
27:27I didn't, but my people did.
27:29My people did.
27:31They're my people.
27:33That's right.
27:34And they've been provoked too much.
27:36That's right.
27:37They've been provoked too much.
27:39What's happened here
27:40has been too,
27:41but this has been
27:41an act of provocation.
27:43And I appreciate you
27:44for everything.
27:46You're the only,
27:47you are the only,
27:48you are the only,
27:48and I appreciate you.
27:52Please, please,
27:53can we hasten,
27:54can we hasten
27:55with that medication?
27:56You don't know
27:56what you've done.
27:59And I want you to know
28:00you give me the exercise to my life.
28:01I try.
28:05Move, please move.
28:07Are you going to get that medication here?
28:32You got to move.
28:33Marston,
28:35they've got 40 minutes.
28:36You have to move,
28:37and the people
28:37that are standing there
28:38in the aisle,
28:39go stay in the radio room yard,
28:41but everybody get behind the table
28:42and back this way, okay?
28:44Please, everybody.
28:46There's nothing to worry about.
28:48Everybody keep calm
28:49and try and keep your children calm.
28:51Have the older children
28:52give love to the little ones
28:53that I'm scared.
28:54And the older children
28:55are going to help
28:56love the little children
28:56and reassure them.
29:02They aren't crying from pain.
29:03It's just a little bitter tasting,
29:05but they're not crying
29:06out of any pain.
29:08Andy McGowan,
29:09can I please see you back here?
29:10What I used to do
29:10before I came here,
29:12so let me tell you about it.
29:14It might make a lot of you
29:15feel a little more comfortable.
29:16Sit down and be quiet, please.
29:17One of the things
29:20that I used to do,
29:21I used to be a therapist.
29:23And the kind of therapy
29:24that I did
29:25had to do with
29:26reincarnation
29:28and past life situations.
29:32And every time
29:34anybody had the experience
29:36of going into a past life,
29:38I was fortunate enough
29:40through Father
29:41to be able to let them
29:43experience it all the way
29:44through their death,
29:45so to speak.
29:47And everybody
29:48was so happy
29:50when they made that step
29:51to the other side.
29:54When you step to the door,
29:55there's no other thing
29:55you can do but step that way.
29:57It's the only way to step.
30:00That choice is not ours now.
30:03It's out of our hands.
30:06If you have
30:07a body that's been crippled,
30:10suddenly,
30:11you have the kind of body
30:13that you want to have.
30:14A little rest.
30:15It feels good.
30:16You've never felt so good,
30:17family, I tell you.
30:19You've never felt so good
30:20is how that feels.
30:21I'm glad you're my brothers
30:31and sisters,
30:31and I'm glad to be here.
30:34Okay.
30:35Please, for God's sake,
30:37let's get on with it.
30:38We've lived.
30:38We've lived as no other people
30:40have lived and loved.
30:41We've had as much of this world
30:42as you're going to get.
30:44Let's just be done with it.
30:45Let's be done with the agony of it.
30:46It's far, far harder
30:51to have to watch you every day
30:53die slowly,
30:54and from the time you're a child
30:56to the time you get gray,
30:57you're dying.
31:02It's honest,
31:03and I'm sure that they'll
31:04pay for it.
31:05They'll pay for it.
31:06This is a revolutionary suicide.
31:09This is not a self-destructive suicide.
31:11So they'll pay for this.
31:12They brought this upon us,
31:14and they'll pay for that.
31:15I leave that destiny to them.
31:22Who wants to go with their child
31:23has a right to go with their child.
31:25I think it's humane.
31:29I want to go.
31:30I want to see you go, though.
31:31They can take me
31:32and do with me
31:33whatever they want to do.
31:33I want to see you go.
31:34I don't want to see you
31:35go through this hell no more.
31:37No more, no more, no more.
31:39We're trying.
31:44If everybody will relax.
31:45The best thing you do
31:46to relax,
31:46then you'll have no problem.
31:48You'll have no problem
31:49with this thing
31:49if you just relax.
31:52And I'd just like to
31:53thank Dad
31:54for giving us life
31:57and also death.
31:59And I appreciate the fact
32:01the way our children are going.
32:05Because, like Dad said,
32:07when they come in,
32:09what they're going to do
32:10to our children,
32:11they're going to massacre
32:12our children.
32:14And also,
32:14the ones that they take
32:15captured,
32:17they're going to
32:18just let them grow up
32:20and be dummies
32:22like they want them to be.
32:23And not grow up to be
32:25associates like
32:26the one and only Jim Jones.
32:28So I'd like to thank Dad
32:32for the opportunity
32:33for letting Jonestown
32:36be
32:36not what it could be,
32:39but what Jonestown is.
32:42Thank you, Dad.
32:42It's not to be feared.
32:46It is not to be feared.
32:47It's a friend.
32:48It's a friend.
32:52If you're sitting there,
32:53show your love
32:54for one another.
33:02Let's get calm.
33:03Let's get calm.
33:06We had nothing we could do.
33:08We can't separate ourselves
33:11from our own people.
33:1720 years laying
33:18in some old rotten
33:19nursing home.
33:38I was to respect
33:53die with a degree
33:54of dignity.
33:55Lay down your life
33:56with dignity.
33:57Don't lay down
33:58with tears and agony.
34:00There's nothing to death.
34:01It's like Max said.
34:02It's just stepping over
34:03into another plane.
34:04Don't be this way.
34:06Stop this hysterics.
34:08This is not the way
34:09for people
34:10who are socialists
34:11and communists
34:11to die.
34:14No way for us to die.
34:16We must die
34:17with some dignity.
34:23Soon we'll have no choice.
34:25Now we have some choice.
34:29You think they're going
34:30to allow this to be done
34:31and allow us
34:33to get by with this?
34:33It must be insane.
34:40Children, it's just
34:41something to put you to rest.
34:42Oh, God.
34:53Mother, mother, mother,
34:54mother, mother,
34:55mother, please.
34:56Mother, please.
34:58Please, please.
34:59Don't, don't do this.
35:01Don't do this.
35:04Get down your life
35:05with your child,
35:06but don't do this.
35:14Free at last.
35:17See, keep your emotions down.
35:20Keep your emotions down.
35:22Children, it will not hurt
35:23if you'll be quiet.
35:25If you'll be quiet.
35:26If you'll be quiet.
35:49It's never been done
35:50before, you say.
35:52It's been done
35:52by every tribe in history.
35:54Every tribe facing annihilation.
35:57All the Indians
35:58of the Amazon
35:58are doing it right now.
36:00They refuse to bring
36:00any babies into the world.
36:02They kill every child
36:03that comes into the world
36:03because they don't want
36:04to live in this kind
36:05of a world.
36:07So be patient.
36:08Be patient.
36:10Death is...
36:12I tell you,
36:13I don't care how many
36:13screams you hear.
36:14I don't care how many
36:15anguished cries.
36:16Death is a million times
36:18preferable to ten more
36:19days of this life.
36:20If you knew
36:21what was ahead of you,
36:22if you knew
36:22what was ahead of you,
36:23you'd be glad
36:24to be stepping over tonight.
36:26Death, death,
36:27death is common
36:28to people.
36:30In the SMAs,
36:31they take death
36:31in their stride.
36:33Let's be dignified.
36:33Let's be dignified.
36:35If you'll quit,
36:36tell them they're dying.
36:37If you adults
36:38will stop
36:38some of this nonsense.
36:40Adults.
36:42Adults.
36:43Adults.
36:43I call on you
36:44to stop this nonsense.
36:46I call on you
36:47to quit exciting
36:48your children
36:48when all they're doing
36:49is going to quiet rest.
36:51I call on you
36:52to stop this now.
36:53If you have any respect
36:54at all,
36:55are we black,
36:56proud,
36:56and socialists,
36:57or what are we?
36:59Now stop this nonsense.
37:00Don't carry this on
37:01anymore.
37:02You're exciting
37:02your children.
37:03All over,
37:06and it's good.
37:07No sorrow
37:09that it's all over.
37:10I'm glad it's over.
37:13Hurry.
37:14Hurry, my children.
37:15Hurry.
37:16All I say,
37:17let's not fall
37:18into the hands
37:18of the enemy.
37:19Hurry, my children.
37:22Hurry.
37:22There's seniors
37:23out here
37:23that I'm concerned about.
37:24Hurry.
37:25I don't want to leave
37:26my seniors
37:27to this mess.
37:32Quickly, quickly,
37:32quickly, quickly,
37:34quickly, quickly.
37:35Sisters,
37:38good knowing you.
37:41You're not paying now.
37:42I'm going to do them
37:43as all they're doing
37:44taking a drink
