00:00The president of the aviation union says the union is here to assist, not to stir trouble.
00:07Wania Sorzano warns that the real problem lies in poor management at the airline
00:12and says the union would welcome government intervention to help steer the airline back on course.
00:19When it comes to being able to have a study table, being able to negotiate,
00:25being able to speak with the management, with the board on various issues.
00:35There are also certain other issues when it comes to our membership
00:39that we really would love to have the intervention of the government,
00:48whether it be the prime minister herself or through the board.
00:52Sorzano says the management at Caribbean Airlines has been uncooperative with the union,
00:58leaving them sidelined in crucial matters.
01:01Unfortunately, though, we have been left, our membership has been left in a very vulnerable position,
01:10whereby we have been left for the past 18 years with no proper collective bargaining ability.
01:18This is because the airline, management of the airline, have chosen not to meet with the union
01:25when it comes to collective bargaining for our membership in particular.
01:29She notes, however, that Caribbean Airlines has recently taken an historic decision
01:34to finally have a meeting with the union.
01:37Still, Sorzano says, her membership still has phased over job security.
01:43Coming out of COVID, it was a very difficult time for them, where the airline closed its doors.
01:51And we, a lot of us, got, as in their terms, was full wood, but laid off, essentially.
02:00Many people were behind on their mortgages.
02:03Some lost their homes.
02:04Some lost their cars.
02:05And so, being in this position now, they are very concerned about what is to come.
02:14She says, they are still hoping to get a seat at the table to have a conversation with the Prime Minister on the way forward.
