Undefeated WBA Super Featherweight Champion Joel Casamayor defends his title against Edwin Santana on Showtime Boxing
Transcript
00:00:00Cesar Chavez won his first world
00:00:01title at one hundred and thirty
00:00:03pounds and successfully defended
00:00:05it nine times Hall of Famers
00:00:06Alexis Arguello, Wilfredo Gomez,
00:00:08Flash Alorde, Sandy Sadler, Kid
00:00:11Chocolate and Johnny Dundee all
00:00:12held the junior lightweight crown.
00:00:14Now there are three undefeated
00:00:17superstars in boxing's hottest
00:00:19division throughout most of its
00:00:2780 year history. The 130 pound weight
00:00:30class has been a division in search of
00:00:32its own identity. The division
00:00:34basically started at this halfway
00:00:37house. They had to put somebody in
00:00:39there back in the 20s. They were
00:00:42getting guys too light to fight
00:00:45lightweight, which sounds redundant,
00:00:46and too heavy to fight feathers. So
00:00:49they made a division here in New York.
00:00:51And Johnny Dundee, one of the all time
00:00:54greats, was its first champion. The one
00:00:56time that the junior lightweight
00:00:57division really did create its own
00:01:01identity, and a great one it was, was in
00:01:03the early 80s when Cornelius Boz
00:01:06Edwards, Bazooka Lamone, Bobby Chacon and
00:01:08Rolanda Navarrete fought on network
00:01:10television every week. Two of those
00:01:12fights were fight of the year. Every
00:01:16fight was a war. It was just a mix of
00:01:17fighters. None of those fighters will go
00:01:19down in history as all time greats. But
00:01:21because of the way they fought and
00:01:23because of how they mixed with each
00:01:24other, those were the great days. And if
00:01:26the junior lightweight division had a
00:01:27golden era, it was the years 1981 to
00:01:30about 84. Now, 20 years later, the 130
00:01:34pound weight class could be entering its
00:01:36most popular era, as it now has three
00:01:39undefeated and charismatic champions. There
00:01:42is Floyd Mayweather Jr., who after his
00:01:44impressive performance against the
00:01:46highly regarded Diego Corrales, is now
00:01:49considered one of boxing's best pound
00:01:51for pound fighters. There is also the
00:01:53consummate technician and Olympic gold
00:01:56medalist, Joel Casamayor. And the only
00:01:59current title holder in all of boxing to
00:02:01have won every bout by knockout, Ocelino
00:02:03Freitas. Freitas and Casamayor, when it
00:02:08happens, should be a great fight. It's
00:02:11said that styles make fights and that's a
00:02:14classic confrontation between a boxer and
00:02:18a puncher at the highest skill level. You
00:02:20have two quality fighters in their
00:02:23primes, head-to-head, no excuses, and
00:02:25going in, you just don't know what's
00:02:27going to happen. Joel Casamayor is a very
00:02:30good fighter. He was a legendary
00:02:32amateur. He won an Olympic gold medal. He's
00:02:35gotten better and better. But what he
00:02:38really needs now is that one big test. On
00:02:42paper, maybe you say, you know what,
00:02:43Casamayor is too seasoned, too schooled
00:02:46for a guy like Freitas who's very raw. And
00:02:49on the other hand, in boxing, sometimes
00:02:51the athlete beats the boxer. The guy who's
00:02:53simply younger, bigger, stronger, faster
00:02:56will beat the guy who's a much better
00:02:58boxer. What makes it such an interesting
00:03:00fight is that it's difficult to predict
00:03:02the winner. This is coming from someone
00:03:04who picked Corrales over Mayweather,
00:03:05De La Hoya over Mosley, had a few other
00:03:08beauts recently, Vargas over Trinidad, and
00:03:11Hamed over Barrera. So actually, what I
00:03:13should do is a Costanza. Whatever I say,
00:03:15just take the opposite, and that'll be
00:03:17exactly what's going to happen. In this
00:03:19case, I don't know who to pick, and that's
00:03:21what makes it the best kind of fight.
00:03:23A Seinfeldian reference by Max Kellerman. Very
00:03:29nice. Well, there you have it. Joel
00:03:30Casamayor, Ocelino Freitas, Floyd Mayweather,
00:03:33Junior. Each one believes that he is the
00:03:35legit world champ, and in the year ahead,
00:03:37any one of them could be proven correct.
00:03:40Coming up next, our main event, unbeaten
00:03:43Joel Casamayor versus Edwin Santana.
00:03:46Well, Casamayor had his difficulties in his
00:03:51last fight versus Roberto Garcia, tough
00:03:53kid. In fact, he was behind on the scorecards
00:03:56before the ninth round TKO. Bobby, do you look
00:03:59at the Casamayor's last fight and say he
00:04:02struggled just a bit because of the style of
00:04:04his last opponent? Not just the style of
00:04:06Roberto Garcia, but Garcia was an excellent
00:04:08and undefeated champion for quite some time. He
00:04:11was ahead before Casamayor beat him. He was
00:04:13ahead before Ben Taggi stopped him. Garcia
00:04:16could fight, and at that time, when he was in
00:04:17shape, he could have given any of the world
00:04:19champions a lot of trouble. So I don't
00:04:21predict the same type of problems being
00:04:23posed by Santana for Casamayor. Not a
00:04:25chance. Two different styles completely. Let's
00:04:27break it all down and get your keys to
00:04:29victory, all right? Okay. Casamayor is on a
00:04:31collision course with Ocelino Freitas as
00:04:33Edwin Santana looks to spoil his plan.
00:04:35For Casamayor, speed and movement are always
00:04:42essential, hands and feet. Also excellent
00:04:44combinations. When he throws punches and
00:04:45bunches, he's hard to defend against. And
00:04:47lastly, that straight left hand is so good
00:04:49and accurate. Here Casamayor on the right
00:04:52against Beasley. He likes to be on the
00:04:54outside. He's a sharpshooter from this
00:04:55distance, and he gets his fighters on the
00:04:57tail end of the punches. He shoots here with
00:04:59a left hand that doesn't land. Then he
00:05:00follows up with two combinations of the jab
00:05:02and another left hand, the left hand being
00:05:04the punishing punch. First one falls a
00:05:07little short, but this one lands right on
00:05:09the face. And the third one, you see
00:05:11Beasley's in trouble. Now Beasley goes to
00:05:13punch. Casamayor pulls back out of the
00:05:14way. The punch flies by and misses and he
00:05:16counters again with that left hand.
00:05:22Basically, he just pummeled Beasley with
00:05:24that left hand so many times the referee
00:05:25has to step in because this fight is
00:05:27over.
00:05:33He has to outwork Casamayor, especially on
00:05:37the inside and also work the body while
00:05:39he's in here. Maybe he can slow down the
00:05:40legs of Casamayor and use the right hand,
00:05:42not just uppercuts and straight, but over
00:05:43the top any way he can.
00:05:47Here's Santana on the left. He's going to
00:05:48close the gap against Kevin Kelly.
00:05:50And when he first comes in, he can't
00:05:52fight from this distance. He first comes in,
00:05:53he misses some punches from the outside,
00:05:55but comes back. There's a couple misses.
00:05:57One swing, another one that doesn't really land
00:06:00well. Now he's back outside. He can't
00:06:03fight Casamayor from this distance. He's got
00:06:05to come in and close that down. As he comes in,
00:06:08he throws some nice punches. A left hook to the body,
00:06:10a right uppercut that gets Kevin Kelly, and also a
00:06:12right hand to the body. What he does is he outworks
00:06:15Kevin Kelly while his back's on the ropes, while he's
00:06:17on the inside. There's the left hook, there's the
00:06:19uppercut, and then the right hand to the body. Kelly offers
00:06:23up some offense, but nothing much. He smothers the punches and outworks him on the inside.
00:06:27If he's going to have a shot against Casamayor, it's his only chance of winning.
00:06:34Bobby, you forgot one key for Santana. He's got to make him change his evil ways, baby.
00:06:41And here is the challenger, Edwin Santana from Lawrence, Massachusetts, by way of
00:06:45Santa Domingo, Dominican Republic, two-time New England Golden Gloves champion,
00:06:49unbeaten his first 25, including a draw with current WBA. 122-pound champ,
00:06:55Bowens Adams, his first loss in 96 at the hands of the Tough Gun and Ben Tacky by 10th round knockout.
00:07:01Won virtually every round before he was caught with a big right hand.
00:07:05Also went the distance with Kevin Kelly, Orlando Canizales, nearly beat Canizales. Bobby,
00:07:11classy boxer, excellent caliber, but not a big banger. Only seven of his 27 wins by knockout.
00:07:16Does he have enough boxing ability to frustrate and outwork a guy like Casamayor?
00:07:22To outbox Casamayor would be absolutely no small feat. Casamayor is one of the premier boxers in the
00:07:27world at any rate, but the possibility of outworking Casamayor is more realistic. If Santana can get on
00:07:32the inside, outwork and make Casamayor miss a counter well, he has the shot at winning, but in and of
00:07:37itself, one tall order. All right, undefeated champion Joel Casamayor from Guantanamo, Cuba,
00:07:44the first U.S.-based Cuban defector to win a world title following a stupendous amateur career.
00:07:49380 wins gold at the 92 Barcelona Olympics. Won the belt in a thorough domination of Korean
00:07:56Jean-Kwon Beck. Comes off his second title defense when he rallied to knock out former champ Roberto
00:08:01Garcia in the ninth. Is there a danger, Bobby, of taking Santana too lightly or looking ahead to
00:08:07Freitas? With any of the big favorites, Steve, there's always a possibility and a danger that
00:08:11they could fight down to the level of the competition or overlook him or take him lightly.
00:08:15We just saw it happen with Lennox Lewis. I don't believe he took Rockman seriously enough,
00:08:19didn't train as serious as he needed to, and he lost the heavyweight championship. I just don't
00:08:23believe Casamayor, though, is that type of guy. All right, let's size him up as we check out the tale of the tape.
00:08:29Casamayor is a year younger than Santana. Two and a half inch height advantage. Casamayor,
00:08:34the champion with the slight edge and reach at yesterday's weigh-in, both under the 130 limit.
00:08:39Tonight, Casamayor 135, Santana 133 and a quarter. Key rules for this world title fight. No standing
00:08:46eight count, no three knockdown rule. A fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round. If an
00:08:51accidental headbutt occurs before the end of the fourth round, it's a technical draw. If it happens
00:08:55after the end of round four, they go to the scorecards. So here at the Silver Star Hotel and

00:10:33here we go. 12 rounds of boxing for the WBA Super Featherweight Championship of the World. And now,
00:10:41ladies and gentlemen in attendance and boxing fans joining us around the world, live from the Silver
00:10:49Star Star. It's Showtime!
00:10:59Introducing to you first, ladies and gentlemen, the challenger on my left, fighting out of the blue
00:11:04corner, wearing royal blue trunks, and fighting out of Lawrence, Massachusetts. He weighed in at a
00:11:10trim and ready, 128 pounds. His record stands at 27 wins, three losses and five draws, with seven of his
00:11:19wins coming by way of knockout. Ladies and gentlemen, here is the challenger, the WBA number 13th ranked
00:11:26super featherweight contender. Introducing Lightning, Edwin Santana.
00:11:37And his opponent across the ring on my right, the defending world champion, fighting out of the red
00:11:42corner, wearing red, white, and blue trunks, fighting out of Miami, Florida, by way of Guantanamo,
00:11:49Cuba. His weight, already 129 pounds, a 1992 Olympic gold medalist, undefeated as a pro at 24-0,
00:11:59with 15 wins coming by way of knockout. Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, making the third defense of his
00:12:04title, please welcome the undefeated WBA super featherweight champion of the world. Introducing Joel El
00:12:14Cepillo Casamayor.
00:12:22Once again, a referee in charge, Armando Garcia, now to give instructions. Chief Seconds, we spoke. The
00:12:28instructions are going to be in Spanish from here on out. Is that clear? Very well. Joel, Edwin,
00:12:34this is a good blow right here, good blow right here, okay? Pay attention to what I'm saying, okay?
00:12:55Final instructions from Armando Garcia from Miami, Florida. Casamayor comes off a fight in which he
00:13:02didn't make his opponent work the first five rounds, kept the pressure off, made the other
00:13:06guy a bit too brave. Look for him to get busy early and be more aggressive from the start. Santana up
00:13:12against it here, unsuccessful each time he stepped up in class. And while he's a savvy veteran boxer,
00:13:17punching power, not a strength. This could come down to speed. Casamayor just too fast for Santana
00:13:23with his sharp, slashing, accurate punches. We'll see.
00:13:29Joel Casamayor in the red, white, and blue trunks. Colors of the Cuban flag. Santana wearing the royal
00:13:36blue with the frills. Casamayor 24-0, 15 knockouts. His third title defense, Santana 27-3-5, just seven KOs.
00:13:46He was ranked number 13 by the WBA. That's his highest rating. So with a fighter like Casamayor,
00:13:53if you don't give him something to worry about in the way of power, he's such a good technician and
00:13:57so quick with good boxing skills, that you're going to be a long, horrible night, probably.
00:14:02A tricky, fast, nuisance southpaw. Moving and punching are his game. Classic stick and move,
00:14:09in and out. But all southpaws were nuisance. Yeah, to you. Yes. He's a smooth boxer, usually
00:14:15controls the action. Tremendous speed, quickness, and reflexes. Casamayor. There's a decent right
00:14:21hand throw there by Santana, but it was blocked. He needs to step a little closer with that. He's
00:14:25not going to be able to box Casamayor from out here. It's just not going to happen. Santana,
00:14:30a tough, durable boxer, very game, looks to outwork you. He'd better with just seven of his 27 wins by
00:14:36knockout. He's got different looks, but most effective when he stays on the outside, sticks and
00:14:42moves. But his biggest weakness, obviously, lack of punching power. Always in excellent condition,
00:14:49he can take a shot. Casamayor told us he had a totally different game plan for tonight,
00:14:59as opposed to his last fight. Establish his presence from the start,
00:15:03begin round one like he began round six versus Roberto Garcia.
00:15:16Right here, very slow action on both sides. I can understand the
00:15:21hesitation on the part of Santana, doesn't have the big power. More worried about Casamayor,
00:15:25but Casamayor, I'm not sure what he's worried about, because Santana has no documented power.
00:15:30I asked Santana, how does he defuse Casamayor's speed, which is his main strength? He said,
00:15:36well, I'm also fast, but I'll have to use a lot of head movement. He said he doesn't think
00:15:42Casamayor hit as hard as Kevin Kelly did. I asked him, how did he know that? Having never been punched
00:15:47by Casamayor, he said he could tell by watching tapes. Let me tell you something about watching tapes.
00:15:52They're not necessarily overrated, but they don't always tell the complete truth. I was fighting a
00:15:56right fighter named Robert Daniels, and I couldn't sense or tell about how strong he was until I
00:16:00actually set foot in the ring with him and had to change my style and my entire strategy from the
00:16:05first round on. Well, right now, Casamayor stepping it up a bit in the final seconds of round one
00:16:12but as the pace heightened after a fairly slow paced round.
00:16:26Again, our translator, Don Francie. He's got to step over to his right a little bit more.
00:16:30Okay, all right, but don't, he doesn't have to make it always alone. You know, he can move both
00:16:36sides. Move to both sides. Okay, but here's the thing. When the guy makes his move in, keep the jab
00:16:44going. Don't let him get inside. You just step back with the jab or stop him completely with the jab.
00:16:58All right? When you see him draw, he's throwing a right jab. Okay, when he drops that jab down.
00:17:06Use that hook, okay? Listen to me. Come on. Let's be smart. Let's be smart.
00:17:13Make sure they know you're fighting.
00:17:18Casamayor dedicating this fight to Joe Goosen's son, Nick, who underwent surgery earlier this week.
00:17:24Successfully, we're happy to report. Joe in the corner of Joe Casamayor.
00:17:31Round two, and Casamayor comes out on the attack.
00:17:35He certainly stepped it up. You see him stepping more at the jab now. Also
00:17:38coming in with more punches behind the jab.
00:17:42Santana is sort of an awkward fighter, which Casamayor said he is concerned with.
00:17:48You'll recall Casamayor, who was frustrated often against Garcia in his last fight,
00:18:00resorted to roughhouse tactics, even had a point deducted during that fight.
00:18:05Thus far, he hasn't had to succumb to that.
00:18:09You know, from fight to fight, you can see sometimes the difference in a fighter's eyes,
00:18:15his thought process, maybe even his concentration levels or factors. Here,
00:18:19Casamayor doesn't have a lot to worry about in way of power from Santana coming back,
00:18:23so he can focus on things he wants to and not worry as much. With Garcia,
00:18:27big right hand and a good left hook, he has to be a little more concerned.
00:18:29Oh, what a left hand by Casamayor, combination. Santana trapped on the ropes,
00:18:34and he'll get the count. That's a knockdown.
00:18:37Yes, he's stuck in the ropes, that piece, a knockdown.
00:18:39Seven, eight.
00:18:40Santana smiling, which is usually a sign that you're hurt.
00:18:47And now, can Casamayor polish him off? Another swift left hook to the jaw by Casamayor.
00:18:54Smothering Santana.
00:18:56Here he goes again, canvassing Santana.
00:19:03He's got to move. He can't stay when he's back against the ropes like that.
00:19:09Santana in all kinds of trouble here in the second round,
00:19:12being backed up by Casamayor.
00:19:14There's that quick left hand we talked about in the Keys to Victory.
00:19:16It's very quick, and it's very accurate, and it is devastating.
00:19:19You're not looking for it.
00:19:20This could be just a matter of time.
00:19:22Okay, no.
00:19:23Separado.
00:19:24No, no, no, no.
00:19:26Casamayor jumping on Santana here in round two and looking to end it early.
00:19:33I'd be interested to see here if Casamayor, after he throws the jab in the left hand,
00:19:37maybe he takes off with a right hook, try to work out the other side, catch, Santana looking.
00:19:43Again, Casamayor all over Santana.
00:19:48Continues to apply the pressure, being very patient.
00:19:52Those punches are so accurate, though.
00:19:53There's blood from the right nostril of Santana.
00:19:57Yeah, he's not overdoing. He's not shooting everything at him,
00:20:00but he's being very patient, very deliberate, not wasting an awful lot.
00:20:04Very economical with his punches, kind of reminiscent of the great Julio Cesar Chavez.
00:20:11Now working the jab, Casamayor.
00:20:14Let's see if we see that left. There it is.
00:20:16Bouncing off the head of Santana, and he finishes with a body shot.
00:20:21Huge round for Casamayor as he gets a smile from Santana.
00:20:26How do you feel? You all right?
00:20:37I'm fine, I feel fine.
00:20:46Brother Planet, don't blow your load.
00:20:49I feel like I'm going to go.
00:20:53Three deep, that one.
00:20:54Feet on. Feet on.
00:20:57Watch the feet. This is something with southpaws that are always difficult.
00:21:00He steps right on his foot, right before he gets to the knockdown.
00:21:04He steps on that foot and hits him.
00:21:07He didn't have the punch land while that foot was being stepped on,
00:21:11but he stepped on it twice in that sequence.
00:21:13And then the right, excuse me, the left hand to the right side of the jaw.
00:21:16And if not for the ropes, he's in front row.
00:21:21Definite 10-8 round for the champion, Casamayor, as we enter round three on knockdown.
00:21:30Casamayor knocking Santana down for the, let's see, third time in his career.
00:21:36He's been down against Rafael Moran and Ben Tacky.
00:21:38Santana in the past, his only knockout loss to Ben Tacky in 98.
00:21:43Casamayor never down, but he really had Santana in dire straits there in the last round.
00:21:53Santana weathering the siege.
00:21:59And he was dealing out those left hooks, Casamayor, with evil intentions.
00:22:14There's that straight left hand again down in the middle,
00:22:17finding a hole on the chin, and that's been Santana.
00:22:20Santana battling back, though.
00:22:21Threw a nice right hand there, didn't land as clean as he'd like,
00:22:24but he threw a nice right hand.
00:22:25That's what he has to do.
00:22:27He has to give Casamayor something to worry about.
00:22:28He's just going to walk right through him.
00:22:32Missing with the left hook.
00:22:33Casamayor is with block.
00:22:36Flashing the jab.
00:22:39What a dunk under move defensively by Casamayor.
00:22:51Bobby, does a fight like this prepare Casamayor at all for a guy like Rosalino Freitas?
00:23:01Well, I'm not really sure.
00:23:03Obviously, Santana's a righty.
00:23:05There's a nice left hook that Santana landed, but no power in it.
00:23:09He's a righty, but I don't think Freitas is going to jump around, run, or move anything
00:23:12near like Santana's doing.
00:23:14Power, certainly the biggest difference.
00:23:16But you know what?
00:23:17Again, it keeps him sharp.
00:23:18It keeps him in the zone.
00:23:19It keeps his body and his timing right.
00:23:21That's what he needs, and just do what he does.
00:23:24A lot of folks feel that Freitas is powerful as he is, just not fast enough for Casamayor.
00:23:30Right, but see that right hand that Santana landed?
00:23:32Had that been a Freitas right hand, it might have been a little bit different look on the face
00:23:37of Casamayor.
00:23:37A good straight left hand by Casamayor to the head, and swings and misses.
00:23:49A lot of air from Santana.
00:23:51It's getting a little wild, but he's throwing that right hand at least with some bad intentions,
00:23:55and making Casamayor back off and step off from time to time.
00:23:58Santana has fought most of this fight going backwards.
00:24:06He was down 115 of round two.
00:24:09It was ruled a knockdown as the ropes saved him.
00:24:11And that's it for round three.
00:24:29Okay, don't allow him to take a step forward.
00:24:33I don't want the kid to ever take a step forward.
00:24:35Keep him going back.
00:24:42The only reason he's dangerous coming forward is in his head.
00:24:52Okay, come on Jesse, you've got to get on top.
00:24:57I'm speaking better Spanish than you.
00:24:58You're speaking English.
00:24:59I'm in trouble.
00:25:01But once again on the attack keeping Santana off bounds and moving backwards.
00:25:05Misses a punch here but steps to him.
00:25:08Keeps the pressure on.
00:25:09They've played jab in the left hand.
00:25:13Body shots were blocked, but that left hand has been the key so far.
00:25:16And you can hear Joe Goosen continue to tell Casamayor just keeps stepping forward,
00:25:22make him fight going backwards, which is pretty much the case throughout here.
00:25:27And they largely spoke English.
00:25:28Shekosmi or understands certain words, understands boxing.
00:25:34That's a language in itself.
00:25:36That's a fact.
00:25:38Round four scheduled for 12 for the WBA 130-pound championship.
00:25:47I'm sure a lot of folks thought this fight was going to end in the second round, but Santana hung in there.
00:25:53You can see that even when Santana jumps in with the right hand, his mind is thinking backward.
00:25:57As soon as he throws these early jumps, then he sees jumping at it.
00:25:59Right.
00:26:00And you can never deliver a good, solid, powerful punch with your mind thinking in reverse.
00:26:05Particularly against a slippery, elusive guy like Casamayor.
00:26:09And you're not going to end with that stuff that you telegraphed that badly.
00:26:23What is Ocelino Kratos thinking as he presumably is watching Joel Casamayor right now?
00:26:32Does he think that, hey, Casamayor could take this guy out when he tried the second round?
00:26:37Well, I'm not sure that that's such a big factor because the guy's only been stopped once his entire career.
00:26:42You have to take that into consideration.
00:26:44Casamayor is not necessarily a one-punch knockout artist on top of that.
00:26:48And the kid does move pretty good.
00:26:49Santana's invasive, gets out of the way.
00:26:51He took his eight-county, got his head clear, and he got out of there.
00:26:56Casamayor continues to be elusive defensively.
00:26:59It's so hard to hit him.
00:27:03And after all, that is the name of the game.
00:27:06Get in and out, stick and move.
00:27:08Good left-right combination there by Santana.
00:27:11The right scored.
00:27:15He still does need to do more, Steve.
00:27:17That one or two at a time is not going to work.
00:27:25For long, he's just going to get frustrated.
00:27:30And Casamayor winding up with that left hand.
00:27:33That was a bolo punch of sorts.
00:27:35Nice uppercut that did land pretty clean.
00:27:38And that's got to take the steam out of here.
00:27:40Good left-right combination to the head by Casamayor.
00:27:48In this case, a right-left.
00:27:49There's a straight left hand to the head of Santana that got his attention.
00:28:02Final seconds, round four.
00:28:04Another convincing round for the champion.
00:28:08It's almost a repeat of the last round.
00:28:10Second round was in the round.
00:28:11There was some real exciting, but outside that, it was a repeat round after round.
00:28:17It's Groundhog Day in Mississippi, along with Cinco de Mayo.
00:28:22It's a great match.
00:28:23It's a great match.
00:28:23It's a great match.
00:28:24It's a great match.
00:28:25Hey, on May 19th, Antoine Echols, the NAVF and USBA middleweight champ, will move up and wait to take on former
00:28:31world champ and current IVF number four contender, Charles the Hatchet Brewer, with a vacant NAVa super
00:28:36middleweight belt.
00:28:37Also scheduled, a whole bunch of Olympians.
00:28:42Jeff Lacey, Francisco Panchito Bajardo appear and highlights of four round fights featuring 2000
00:28:48Olympic silver medalist Ricardo Rocky Juarez and heavyweight prospect Malik Scott of Philly.
00:28:55That's Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
00:28:57Catch this exciting card Saturday, May 19th at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific only on Showtime.
00:29:07Round five was always Bobby's favorite.
00:29:21And here we go.
00:29:22It's scheduled for 12.
00:29:27WBA Super Featherweight Championship.
00:29:30Joel Casamayor in the red, white, and blue trunks of the Cuban flag.
00:29:35He's 24-0, 15 knockouts.
00:29:38Edwin Santana, the Royal Blue, 27, 3 and 5, 7 KO'd.
00:29:43It has been Casamayor all the way.
00:29:45Hold on.
00:29:45He's got one knockdown back in round two.
00:29:47Santana fights such a defensive fight, Steve.
00:29:51It's hard for him to even get a reasonable offensive momentum going.
00:30:01And here's the press row scoring.
00:30:02Austin Bishop of the local Meridian star,
00:30:05Franz Litz of Sports Illustrated and George Maul of fightnews.com.
00:30:09All have it identical for Casamayor, 40-35.
00:30:12This one's pretty simple.
00:30:13This one will be easy.
00:30:18Minute into round five.
00:30:19And again, Casamayor just peppering the head of Edwin Santana with the jack.
00:30:27Nice combination by Santana.
00:30:30He's not stepping forward enough to land.
00:30:33Casamayor is able to fend off with putting his hands up and it looks just get tapped.
00:30:38Nice right hook by Casamayor.
00:30:41I haven't seen enough of that today.
00:30:42Left hand is a little left hand crazy.
00:30:45Right hook needs to be behind her.
00:30:47Casamayor continues to dominate the action with his superior boxing skills.
00:30:52Picking Santana apart.
00:30:53Low blow there by Casamayor.
00:30:56And it was an accident.
00:30:59No reason to get dirty.
00:31:08No, no, no, no.
00:31:15Interesting little dance they did.
00:31:18Spinnerama.
00:31:21Casamayor won the belt on a fifth round TKO over Jean Crofette in the...
00:31:27May thoroughly dominated.
00:31:29This is third title defense.
00:31:323-0 in world title bounce.
00:31:38Casamayor has had a spectacular career since coming over defecting from Cuba.
00:31:43And it might be a case of now where we're at the point that this fight is just a matter of survival now for Santana.
00:31:49Although he's starting to now throw a few punches, but running like that being in reverse and not outworking or even attempting to outwork Casamayor.
00:31:56There's a note shot for a victory sort of fight.
00:32:01Casamayor continues to be on the offensive.
00:32:07Pressuring Santana.
00:32:09Dictating the pace.
00:32:10The tempo.
00:32:12Moving forward constantly.
00:32:14And once in a while, yes, Santana lets loose.
00:32:17Nice combination left hook to the body, right hand to the head.
00:32:20Beautiful!
00:32:24Casamayor though playing with Santana.
00:32:27Hey, if you hit his body now, you don't hit.
00:32:29El no le cuota, el puerto.
00:32:30El no le cuota.
00:32:32Okay, mira.
00:32:33Tu mano, ma bueno paqueta, okay?
00:32:36Keep the hands in front of you.
00:32:37Y trabajo, y jab, machiquito, okay?
00:32:40Jab with the left.
00:32:40Oiste?
00:32:41Oiste?
00:32:42Yeah.
00:32:43Oiste, machiquito.
00:32:44Forget that fast lane right now.
00:32:45Forget it.
00:32:46Take a peek at that blow that went south of the border.
00:33:08Uh, yeah, it was down there.
00:33:10Didn't look to do all that much damage, but it was down there.
00:33:13Somewhere near Philadelphia, Mississippi.
00:33:15In the vicinity of.
00:33:21Casamayor ready for round six.
00:33:27Santana fights with the memory of his good friend,
00:33:29scarring partner Bobby Tomasello, who recently died five days after collapsing
00:33:33at the end of a fight with Steve Dante in Boston.
00:33:36Santana's picture hung on the wall of Tomasello's personal boxing shrine in his attic next to
00:33:43those of Floyd Patterson and Angel Manfredo.
00:33:46When Tomasello died, Santana said, I felt like a part of me died too.
00:33:50They were very close, very sad story.
00:33:52Santana fighting a little better this run, offering up a little more offense and some counter punching,
00:33:59as well as a few leads.
00:34:01But not being that effective.
00:34:02Santana two-time New England Golden Gloves champion,
00:34:06New England State Featherweight champ, originally from Santa Domingo.
00:34:09A little left elbow move there by Casamayor too, which we saw
00:34:28him do a couple of times against Garcia, and they deducted a point in the last fight.
00:34:32There's really no need for him to do that, especially being so far ahead.
00:34:36There's a straight left hand by Casamayor that scored right in the head.
00:34:39Very nice combination.
00:34:40He kept Santana at the end of his punches and the ropes were there.
00:34:43Nowhere for Santana to run.
00:34:45A game Santana unleashes accommodation, but mostly blocked by the champion.
00:34:51And Santana continues to go backwards.
00:34:56Stiff left hand there that jarred the head of Santana.
00:34:59You see Casamayor starting to work the body a little more,
00:35:01trying to maybe slow down the legs of Santana.
00:35:04Not working as of yet.
00:35:10Casamayor's eye is drifting into the crowd as he was broken up there by Garcia, the ref.
00:35:16Going back to that snappy jab.
00:35:18Followed up with a left uppercut, a left hook to the ear.
00:35:29Santana fighting this fight in reverse.
00:35:33And that's not the way to go.
00:35:35No, I don't think it's possible for him to win fighting this fight.
00:35:37You can retreat consistently like this.
00:35:39I mean, he stops, he picks his spots, but the spots he picks are so few,
00:35:43far between, and he's not that effective when he picks them.
00:35:46He is getting picked apart and eaten alive here by the surgical Joel Casamayor.
00:35:51Every once in a while, Santana comes back with some body shots.
00:35:54And those punches were blocked by Casamayor.
00:35:57This is a turn into a virtual sparring session for Casamayor.
00:36:09Body shot Casamayor, that's really got to take it out.
00:36:12Yeah, you see, he can do what he wants, when he wants, rest when he wants, fight when he wants.
00:36:17There's no threat in front of Casamayor right now, and that's got to change.
00:36:22If Santana wants to change the window.
00:36:26Well, we've gone halfway.
00:36:28Edwin, you're not doing enough in there.
00:36:33What's the matter?
00:36:33Huh?
00:36:34What's the matter?
00:36:36You got any problems, you want me to know.
00:36:44You understand?
00:36:45Edwin, are you okay?
00:36:47You okay?
00:36:48Yeah, let me see.
00:36:49Breathe in, Tamiya, Edwin, breathe in.
00:36:50Get Tamiya in here, come on.
00:36:54Low blow number two works Santana at the corner, and Casamayor lands one,
00:36:59that uppercut again going south.
00:37:01Later, keeping Santana up against the ropes, working the uppercut this time to the chin,
00:37:08and the straight left down the middle, keeping Santana in basically a defenseless position,
00:37:14back against the ropes.
00:37:19When the Mexican army beat France in 1862, which is the reason they celebrate Cinco de Mayo,
00:37:25the Mexican army was outnumbered two to one by the French army, and still they pulled off
00:37:30an upset.
00:37:31That's what Santana is going to need here.
00:37:34The odds might be worse than two to one against them.
00:37:39Round seven.
00:37:41Dare I even ask you at the halfway point?
00:37:45You dare not because it's still a shutout, 60 to 53, the extra point being the knockdown.
00:37:51The knockdown occurring in round two at the 1.15 mark.
00:37:59The ropes saving Santana from going into the first row.
00:38:09Good straight left hand to the head by Casamayor, continues to land, and there's that right tag.
00:38:14He's going downstairs and up.
00:38:19Left uppercut to the chin by Casamayor.
00:38:23Just setting him up.
00:38:24Blood for the nose of Santana, which has been there since round two.
00:38:31And Casamayor blocking with his elbows, the heads clashing.
00:38:35Styles always makes fights, Steven.
00:38:36This is a fight here with a guy, Santana, who's got a very awkward style, very quick,
00:38:39hard to hit him clean.
00:38:41Even when he had him down, his head cleared pretty good because he has a pretty good chin
00:38:44in general.
00:38:45And again, moving, it's not as if Casamayor is not a good finisher.
00:38:48We saw him when he had Beasley in trouble, Beasley's done.
00:38:50Yeah, Garcia in trouble, Garcia was done.
00:38:52Different story here, different fighter, different style.
00:38:56Dominated Radford Beasley two fights ago.
00:38:59Did have his difficulties with the very, very tough former champ Roberto Garcia,
00:39:04but having his way throughout here with Santana.
00:39:09Smothering Santana with rights and lefts.
00:39:17And keeping Santana right where he wants him.
00:39:19At the end of his gloves, where his punches are effective,
00:39:22and he's still speedy enough to get in and out and do what he needs to.
00:39:27Santana is taking a beating.
00:39:30A lot of head shots.
00:39:33An abrasion under the right eye, blood from the nose.
00:39:36Of Santana pushed away by the shoulder of Casamayor.
00:39:46We approach the final 30 seconds, round seven.
00:39:49Scheduled for 12.
00:39:51It has been an unmerciful attack by the champion.
00:39:57And even after you've said that, and we've seen how effective he's been,
00:40:00all the punches he's landed, he's not really doing that much damage.
00:40:05Pound, pound for pound wise, when I say pound for pound,
00:40:07he's not really hurting or debilitating to intend that much.
00:40:09A couple of bruises, a little bit of blood, but no real staggering.
00:40:12Back comes Santana briefly.
00:40:16A nice little combination.
00:40:17A flurry to the head, but didn't do that much damage.
00:40:22We'll follow the champion into his corner with
00:40:26Joe Goosen presiding.
00:40:27I don't need that talent, I just want the talent to catch the water.
00:40:44Excuse me, that just hit me in the head, sir.
00:40:46All right, let me get, let me get this.
00:40:53All right.
00:40:53When you face the south pole, you always want them getting feet tangled and stepped on.
00:41:06There they cross up their feet a little bit.
00:41:09Bang heads a little bit.
00:41:10See them rubbing their heads.
00:41:13Just one of those things.
00:41:15Laying around, Casemiro keeping Santana at the end of his punches.
00:41:17Jab, jab, left hand.
00:41:19Some more combinations.
00:41:20Santana basically not offering much up in the way he defend himself.
00:41:23Even though Casemiro is completely dominating, while Casemiro stays sharp,
00:41:29does Acelino Freitas, who might be watching from Brazil, gain confidence?
00:41:36No, Steve, I told you before, never try and get inside a fighter's head.
00:41:39I don't know what he sees.
00:41:40I know what I see, but what I see is one type of fighter is different than what he sees.
00:41:44Well, if you were Freitas, would you be gaining confidence?
00:41:47I would have my own thoughts that Santana is not me.
00:41:51Santana does not possess my power or my skills, so it wouldn't be relevant.
00:41:55And I would be putting myself in front of Casemiro and then visualizing the fight.
00:41:59All right.
00:42:00Totally different fight.
00:42:01Casemiro blocking Santana's shots and then countering effectively.
00:42:07And believe me, if you get in my head, you won't like it in there either.
00:42:08I don't know if I want to take that trip right now, but maybe someday in the future.
00:42:18Casemiro has knocked out three of his last four opponents, and all three were for the title.
00:42:29Looking to make it four out of five here tonight.
00:42:31As of right now, I'd say this fight has distance on it.
00:42:36Anything could happen, certainly.
00:42:37It could be a strange cut, or he could stagger Santana again.
00:42:43But it just seemed to fall into a rut, sort of.
00:42:46He does the same thing.
00:42:48Santana rolls up just enough offense to keep Casemiro from going crazy.
00:42:53And then the round ends.
00:42:54Halfway through round eight, Joel Casemiro, 24-0, 15 knockouts.
00:43:02He's wearing the red, white, and blue, the colors of the Cuban flag.
00:43:05Santana missing widely in the royal blue.
00:43:0827-3-5, seven knockouts, but getting nowhere fast against the champion throughout.
00:43:18Santana fighting most of this fight on the retreat.
00:43:21Casemiro coming forward.
00:43:25Body shots now by Casemiro.
00:43:27Let's see if he goes upstairs.
00:43:30It's a nice straight right hand, but he needs to throw more of them,
00:43:32and maybe follow with a hook or an uppercut, do something different,
00:43:35because Casemiro sees what he has and blocks him every time.
00:43:39Santana hoping, perhaps, that Casemiro gets careless,
00:43:45leaves himself open momentarily, and he can take advantage.
00:43:49Even having said that, Steve, I think even if he straps both his hands and closes his eyes,
00:43:53I don't think that Santana has one-punch knockout power.
00:43:56He's going to have to do it with accumulation and combinations.
00:43:59Only seven of Santana's 27 wins by knockout, so he doesn't have much pop.
00:44:04Well, he's trying to do what you just said there, just continue to throw some punches at Casemiro,
00:44:16but it's having no effect, and it's all too brief.
00:44:20He doesn't sustain it, because he can't against the slick Casemiro. Won't allow it.
00:44:25He's trying to do it with a lot of water.
00:44:29Yeah, it's a lot of defense.
00:44:32But hey, it's necessary.
00:44:35Mira, Juan.
00:44:35You're going to have this one more for your gancho, okay?
00:44:38You're going to have this one more for your gancho, okay?
00:44:40You're going to have this one more for your gancho, okay?
00:44:42A lot of water in this season?
00:44:43Yeah, uh-huh.
00:44:45Let me have that water pass. Thanks.
00:44:46Just look at here.
00:44:48Okay.
00:44:51Okay.
00:44:51Get in there, move your head, and fight him. Make a fight of this, will you?
00:44:59Three, three, three. Come on, brief.
00:45:01Suck it out. Come on.
00:45:06Edwin, Edwin, you've got to counter and then fight.
00:45:09Let him miss you. Make him miss you. Keep a jab in his face.
00:45:12You're not jabbing for shit.
00:45:16What could you possibly say to Edwin Santana right now?
00:45:19I heard what they said. Make him miss you.
00:45:22Well, you know, easier said than done, obviously.
00:45:23If you make a miss, but then even if you make a miss and you don't do anything,
00:45:26what have you done? Not much.
00:45:27Right. You've got to make him pay after you make a miss,
00:45:30and he's unable to do that to Casamayor.
00:45:33Unfortunately, what he has to do is he's going to take a lot of energy,
00:45:35and I don't know that he has the energy or the skills to do it against somebody
00:45:37as skilled, talented, and well-conditioned as Casamayor.
00:45:40He's got to hit him, and he's got to counter the counter,
00:45:43because Casamayor is also always going to count. He's very quick.
00:45:47If you watch, Casamayor will keep his hands up.
00:45:48He'll throw two, and he'll just block them, but what he needs to do is throw two,
00:45:52and then come right back. Maybe throw two more.
00:45:56Take a look at the press row scoring.
00:45:59Members of the media, again, identical for Casamayor, 80-71.
00:46:03Austin Bishop from the Meridian Star, Franz Litz from Sports Illustrated,
00:46:07who's here doing a story on the champion Casamayor, and George Ball from fightnews.com.
00:46:13You know it's an easy fight to score when they all have it the same,
00:46:15and I have it the same as those people, so there's no controversy here.
00:46:20Well, it's been about 21 minutes since Casamayor knocked Santana down back in round two.
00:46:36And we're in round nine now. It's scheduled for 12 for the WBA 130-pound championship.
00:46:43The other champions, Floyd Mayweather, WBC champ, 24-0, 18 knockouts.
00:46:48IBF, Stephen Forbes, 19-1, 15 knockouts, WBO, Ocelino Freitas, 29-0, 29 knockouts.
00:46:56Good combinations here by Casamayor, but having this fight so totally in the bag,
00:47:01so easily under control, I don't think there's any sense of urgency.
00:47:04Not necessarily that he could possibly lose, but that he even needs to knock the guy out.
00:47:08Maybe he just wants the rounds. There are points in time where I think if he turns it on,
00:47:11he might get Santana in trouble, but he never really steps it up that far.
00:47:16Santana walking into a straight left by the champion.
00:47:19Santana's three losses to Kevin Kelly in 96.
00:47:22Unanimous decision. Orlando Canizales.
00:47:25He almost beat Canizales in 97. Some bad blood now.
00:47:29And Ben Tacky, 10th round knockout loss in 98.
00:47:39Casamayor hasn't even come close to losing.
00:47:45And what a reported 380 fights as an amateur, and of course the gold medal
00:47:49for Cuba as a bantamweight at the 92 Barcelona Olympics. He was, uh,
00:47:57the odds-on favorite to repeat 96 Atlanta, but that's when he, uh,
00:48:03defected to the United States, just before the game started.
00:48:12Casamayor now living in Miami, trains out of NIs, California, where the Goossens are.
00:48:16You know, he almost seems at times disinterested.
00:48:20He throws a couple of jabs, he just follows him around, walks, puts his arms down,
00:48:25walks and watches Santana.
00:48:31Well, we mentioned earlier, Ocelino Freitas back in Brazil,
00:48:35dropped out of this, uh, fight card this past Wednesday with personal problems.
00:48:39As you take a look at the current world champions in, uh, arguably the hottest division in all of
00:48:46boxing 130 pounds.
00:48:48Casamayor said, first, I want to get Santana, then I want to clean it up with Freitas,
00:48:53and then I want Floyd Mayweather Jr.
00:48:56Stephen Forbes scheduled to fight the John Brown next.
00:49:00Almost there, huh?
00:49:02The number one mandatory.
00:49:06Told you, you may not be cut out for this job.
00:49:08Okay, all right, good, good, all right, you don't mind the water then.
00:49:11No, no, no, no.
00:49:12All right, good.
00:49:13Special from you.
00:49:14I said, Joe Coosin joking around in the corner there.
00:49:21Always very direct, straight to the point, and at times animated.
00:49:25One of the top trainers going in the world of boxing as we enter double figures round 10.
00:49:32You know, things are going well in the corners that loose.
00:49:34Very loose.
00:49:35And that comfortable.
00:49:35And, you know, if you look at Edwin Santana's record too, he has 27 wins only,
00:49:39three losses with five draws.
00:49:41One of the fighters he's faced, he faced five times.
00:49:44A draw and four wins for Santana, a guy named Angel Gonzalez.
00:49:49So, sometimes the records don't necessarily tell the whole story.
00:49:56Casemayor has knocked out 63% of his opponents, while Santana has got the 10-round
00:50:01distance reward 14 of his 35 fights.
00:50:04That's 40%.
00:50:08Our stage manager, Joel Karpstein, right on the money here,
00:50:14becoming our statistician as well.
00:50:15That's why he gets the big bucks.
00:50:18Absolutely.
00:50:20Doesn't get enough, I always say.
00:50:25Minute gone by, round 10.
00:50:26So, I can't help but think that Casemayor could turn the pace up if he really wanted to,
00:50:31but he's just not really interested.
00:50:33There's a bet.
00:50:42Santana with a combination to the head.
00:50:45The attempt there, mostly blocked by Casa Mayor.
00:50:48Had an abrasion under the left eye of Casemayor, but nothing
00:50:53uh too dangerous might have been from the earlier head but it could be that one right hand where
00:51:01right after the right hand he kind of wiped out his eyes almost like a pinch to skin
00:51:05you might have felt a little bruise there
00:51:09well there'll be some questions from this fight if it goes the distance even though it's been
00:51:15totally dominated by the champion the casa mayor if it continues that way why could he put santana
00:51:21away well he tries there with a right left combination the left really scored and a
00:51:25stacking left hook to the head it was a nice combination it's a good follow-up but santana
00:51:29held his ground through a few punches of his own the casa mayor not a knockout specialist 15 of his
00:51:3924 by knockout but no more for his speed elusiveness accurate punches surgical-like performances
00:51:52freitas will come in to knock him out there's no question about that yeah i'm pretty sure that uh
00:51:57arsenal afraid is going to have a little different strategy than santana has and a whole lot more power
00:52:01to back up that strategy could be a great fight i mean a classic matchup between boxer versus puncher
00:52:08full versus matador
00:52:09heading for the bell round 10 after watching round two who would have thought we would go this far oh
00:52:19big right hand to the head by casa mayor nice double right hook i've been waiting for that all night
00:52:24all right
00:52:34all right you feel all right how many
00:52:37all night long customer has landed with that left hand right down the middle right between the
00:53:01gloves like that and i was consistently waiting for him to throw that and then follow up as we take
00:53:07another look at it the right hook there the right hook right there should have been the punch especially
00:53:12with his head up in the air and later we'll see the right hook beautiful right hook right in the jaw
00:53:17now if he'd have taken that and put it behind one of those left hands that snaps santana's head up
00:53:22maybe we have a different thing maybe we have a knockdown or knockout
00:53:25well it has been thorough domination for joel casemayor
00:53:30as we enter round 11.
00:53:42as a mayor 3 and 0 in fights that have gone the full
00:53:4612 round distance
00:53:49not used to seeing him go this deep though
00:53:52the average is about five rounds
00:53:54as mentioned been 12 rounds
00:53:56on three occasions
00:53:59now he's doing a little bit of playing a little bit showboating
00:54:11just toying with the challenger
00:54:15you know why he does that steve because he can
00:54:17it's a pretty good feeling to be in that much control of an opponent
00:54:34especially in the world championship fight
00:54:35and you know to have 10 rounds in the bank and not have a worry in the world it's not a bad place to be
00:54:43pretty good work out here tonight for these two guys
00:54:45he'll sleep well tonight
00:54:55casemayor chasing santana around most of the uh if not all the fight digging body shots there
00:55:04and their body shots in return by uh santana those punches picked off by the gloves of custom a couple
00:55:10of nice combinations though even though most of it was blocked but he threw the combination with
00:55:14blocked they followed up and a couple of them snuck through partially
00:55:17he needs to do more hell he had to have done more of that because there's no way actually he could knock
00:55:21casemayor out so even if he out works him from
00:55:24from now to the end of the fight it's not even a fight
00:55:27a complete shutout for casemayor
00:55:31scoring at will doing uh basically anything he wants to
00:55:36blocking punches no i think the only way that chan ten quinn now basically involves a baseball bat okay
00:55:47last time i checked illegal
00:55:54casemayor eluding those
00:56:01and a wild miss or two by santana
00:56:06couple again nice combinations but they're not really effective they're not getting through often and
00:56:13so little so late that even if they were you know winning the rounds that this is late in stage
00:56:17there's only a round left
00:56:2011 of the books
00:56:29santana basically in survival mode
00:56:31last round last round the only way you can win this fight is knocking them out the only way you're
00:56:40going to do that is not running from them get right in front of them bob and weird slip and slide
00:56:45and try and come up with a bomb all right just be careful okay you hear me yeah be very careful all right
00:56:51you heard the santana corner eddie carrera and company and uh
00:57:20uh i guess they're right the only way you can win this fight is by knockout and
00:57:25what are the chances of that as my follow-up questions that that would have been with what
00:57:29yes sledgehammer just not a puncher and they haven't given him enough strategy to go and do that
00:57:34you know you just tell them something to set them up somewhere to work work from the inside
00:57:38uppercut on the inside left hook right hand wing something in there
00:57:41well to this point santana could not make casemayor change his evil ways
00:57:51baby
00:57:55punch blocked but there's the right hand you just got to just throw it just throw it
00:57:59up at this point it's not really too much about the care how it looks take the shot
00:58:13can you remember the last time santana came forward
00:58:17well he stops her once in a while throws a combination it's sort of forward like that and then backs off
00:58:22the thing is let me ask you a silly question okay go ahead if casemayor doesn't have massive
00:58:33punching power no more for his slickness and speed why couldn't you be a little braver and get inside
00:58:40there and just give it a shot well he is quick and he is sharp and you know i always say it speed times
00:58:46mass equals destructive power if you walk into a very quick shot it could wobble you it could hurt you
00:58:53and you don't want to get hit with everything on the way in because that doubles the impact as well
00:58:56so i guess santana doesn't want to be careless doesn't want to get knocked out and be
00:59:00foolish at the same time you can't win the fight by decision what's the difference
00:59:05well he's got nothing to lose at this point he's got to knock casemayor out he's not a big puncher
00:59:11obviously with just the seven ko's but why not at least just once but there is a certain amount of
00:59:18honor in finishing on your feet on your feet i've heard that from you many times well you can tell
00:59:25your grandchildren you went 12 rounds the distance with the great joel casemayor
00:59:29but he really never made it into any kind of a fight
00:59:44last 40 seconds of this championship fight big left hand there that really got the attention of
00:59:50santana staggered him momentarily and he came back with a decent combination but again too little too
00:59:55late no real power on it well he's got some uh some resolve there's no question heart santana
01:00:03doesn't have the punch and obviously too slow for lacoste mayor most people are
01:00:09his speed's not bad but there's no power with it customer has both he possesses the speed
01:00:13and on the end that speed there's a little bit of sting
01:00:16yeah customer getting a little there he did a couple times double four arms couple elbows
01:00:20no need final seconds and that's it
01:00:34a no doubt about it decision coming up that might be the understatement of the century
01:00:40that might be the understatement of the century every round to joel casemayor
01:00:47he had the challenger santana who now gets to let out a smile of relief down in the second round
01:00:54it was actually into the ropes he was trapped between the ropes the rope saved him
01:01:00blood was visible from his right nostril but the knockdown officially at 115 of round two
01:01:06and i think more relief than anything that this one is finally in the books for santana
01:01:15he did survive underlining the word survive 12 rounds with joel casemayor but was fighting mostly
01:01:26while going backwards you know there are a few positions in each and every round we stopped
01:01:31stood his ground through some quick combinations but you could sense
01:01:35the combinations were more to keep casemayor off than they were to hurt him he wasn't really digging
01:01:39in and firing and again on top of that he doesn't really have the power and as it turns
01:01:44out bobby a very very safe tune-up fight for joel casemayor but he does get the advantage of remaining
01:01:51sharp while ocelino freitas sits on the sidelines with all of his personal problems
01:01:56yes a very safe tune-up somebody that didn't have the power or the overall abilities to really
01:02:01threaten him at any point not even to win the round all right let's get it up to jimmy lennon jr for the
01:02:07final numbers
01:02:11ladies and gentlemen after 12 rounds of action we have a unanimous decision here the score totals
01:02:17judge mark streisand scores about 119 to 108 rocky young and al walensky both scored about 120 to 107.
01:02:27all three in favor of the winner and still champion the undefeated joel el cepillo
01:02:38the amazing thing about that score somebody gave a round to santana now god bless him
01:02:47you know what i remembered many years about fourth guy named murray southern who i thought i'd dominate
01:02:50every single round and at the end of one of the judges had given him two rounds and i talked to
01:02:55this judge who i will not name he said why did you do that he said well he showed up i felt like
01:02:59giving him a couple rounds unbelievable he gave him two rounds just for showing up well casemayor
01:03:04in a virtual shutout with his third successful defense of the title in the process remaining
01:03:10undefeated upping his record to 25 and 0 but remains with 15 knockouts
01:03:15and with the tonight's victory you would think it sets up the july 14 showdown for
01:03:22the titles with a salino freitas in a battle of undefeated world champions
01:03:27let's get it over to tim smith in the ring tim
01:03:31a dominating performance steve but not the explosive performance by joel casemayor retaining his title
01:03:38tonight and you had him in trouble in the second round and you couldn't finish him or you're
01:03:44disappointed that you couldn't take him out and it went the distance
01:04:01you got to remember i'm a professional you know i could talk about take him out in the second round
01:04:05and what i did was i just came here to work 12 rounds win every round round for round i'm a
01:04:10professional the knockout comes fine if it doesn't we win doesn't matter either way one way or another it's win
01:04:16now you didn't have freitas here tonight you didn't have a chance to look at him he didn't
01:04:23have a chance to look at you the the way the fight went with the 12 rounds do you think that if he's
01:04:30watching back in brazil that you gave him something to worry about when you guys do hook up on july
01:04:35the 14th i'm a professional when my promoter dan goose in america pretends calls me in you know i
01:05:05i come to fight i'm very happy to come to the silver star casino and showtime they're tremendous
01:05:09to me and i had a job to do and i came to do it i don't worry about freitas freitas is july 14th
01:05:13that's when we worry about freitas and we fought a guy that moves okay he's too easy to hit freitas
01:05:18okay we just wanted to make sure if we touch this guy we can hit anybody in the world because this
01:05:21right guy runs around the ring like a rabbit freitas right in front of you in cuba all his life he's been
01:05:26trained guys to come forward so freitas i just hope you come here july 14th and fight don't be a coward
01:05:31come out and fight because you're gonna get knocked out i promise that to you i'm not sure that uh
01:05:36joel said all that he said that because we talked it over before the fight so i just wanted to make
01:05:39sure okay now now are you now joel are you still not upset that freitas didn't come here and put
01:05:49himself on the line take any punches tonight didn't put his title on the line are you still not upset
01:05:54about that or after going through 12 rounds of this uh are you just still maybe a little bit
01:05:59irked that he didn't show up you remember when they made this may 5th it was freitas going to
01:06:18fight last but lasma bagner and i was fighting santana i came to do my job against santana whatever
01:06:23he didn't do against bagno that's his problem okay now july 14th he's got to come in and fight that's
01:06:28what we worry about now we start concentrating on freitas the only thing we had on mind is edwin
01:06:32santana like i told you he's a professional okay thank you very much joel and congratulations thank
01:06:37you and now we're going to talk to uh dan goosin looks like he just won the masters hey are you
01:06:43kidding i'm not even a golfer tim now dan uh freitas didn't show up tonight fight fans may be a little
01:06:50bit concerned that he wasn't here tonight they may be a little afraid that maybe july 14th is in jeopardy
01:06:57how much confidence that can they have that july 14th freitas and casa mayor is actually going to
01:07:03come off well the first thing and i usually don't make personal comments but i do want to
01:07:07say that we're with you nicky my little nephew and uh surgery uh last week came out very successful but
01:07:13getting back to uh uh uh freitas you know it was unprofessional that uh he let the tv company down
01:07:20showtime showtimes you know built this thing up uh uh castle mayor the fans the site but uh uh you
01:07:28know his promoters freitas they've been calling out casa mayor we've got a deal to fight july 14th
01:07:34i feel that for whatever reasons he didn't show up here those are that's his brogue of july 14th
01:07:40we feel confident the fight's going to happen in today's world of boxing tim uh the best have to fight
01:07:45the best if he wants to make the type of money and claim that he's the best 130 pounder out there
01:07:50he's not going to do it in brazil okay now steve uh was reporting before that the wbo
01:07:56may mandate that freighters fight an interim fight before he steps into the ring
01:08:02if they do order that uh are you going to protest that because he's putting possibly the fight at risk
01:08:09taking a fight so soon before he has to get into the ring on july the 14th you know that's that's
01:08:15a new one on me i mean i've heard of uh mandating a mandatory fight but i've never really ever heard
01:08:21of mandating a interim fight against the left-hander but uh no i i don't think uh uh uh paco's going to
01:08:29do something like that he realizes how big this fight is for the sport for the industry we need it
01:08:34for the industry we need it for the wbo we need it for the wba all the other organizations there's no
01:08:40room for an interim fight this fight's going july 14th okay very good now steve wasn't a major road
01:08:47block or stumbling block for casa mayor here tonight he got past him a dominating performance but i'm not
01:08:53sure he gave freighters anything to worry about i agree with you tim i don't think freighters uh if he
01:09:00was watching this fight would be uh scared at all uh you know that uh ocelino's going to come in
01:09:06with uh both barrels loaded if he does indeed get in the same ring july 14th with joel casa mayor let's
01:09:14take a look at the scoring for our main event and the press row guys had it what exactly the same as
01:09:20the official judges at the ringside there you go and austin bishop gave casa mayor or gave santana around
01:09:26bobby i'm i'm i'm never ceased to be amazed at some of the scorings but no this was obviously a one-sided
01:09:33fight i still have trouble giving them around though i really do and the online uh people had the cost
01:09:38mayor winning by uh easy shutout if you took part in the online scoring we thank you so much for your
01:09:43participation i knew i could trust our fans okay looking ahead here's what's coming up in the near future
01:09:49on showtime championship boxing on may 19th antoine eccles the nabf and usba middleweight champion will
01:09:59move up in weight to take on former world champion and current ivf number four contender charles brewer
01:10:05for the vacant north american boxing association super middleweight title also scheduled 2000 olympians
01:10:11and undefeated prospects jeff lacy and francisco panchito bajado appear in separate six round co-features
01:10:18and highlights of scheduled four round bouts featuring 2000 olympic silver medalist ricardo rocky juarez
01:10:25and heavyweight prospect malik scott of philadelphia catch this exciting card on saturday may 19th at
01:10:3110 p.m eastern and pacific only on showtime
01:10:37well this may give freighters some confidence this result here tonight are you concerned at all
01:10:44whatsoever the fact that casma your went the distance tonight am i concerned in what way am i
01:10:49concerned that the fight won't happen am i concerned that freighters might beat him no the fact that he
01:10:53couldn't put a guy like santana away not at all some fighters just don't get put away by other styles and
01:10:58of the fight that they're fighting and some guys rise to the occasion some guys are just too elusive some
01:11:03are too defensive and some guys when they want to survive they survive what do you think is going to happen
01:11:09should casamayor and freitas get into the same ring july 14th my gut instinct tells me that casamayor may
01:11:15come to the ring the best night of his life in boxing i think that casamayor will appoint freitas
01:11:21if they fight you think he's just too fast for him he's a little too slick a little too experienced
01:11:25and has faced better competition all right we'll see what happens if that fight indeed comes off let's
