00:01:17He's 28 years of age from Laredo, Texas.
00:01:19And he came in right at the limit of 118, as did the challenger, Pinango.
00:01:24Pinango, rated number one by the WBA, 26 years of age.
00:01:28He's from Caracas, Venezuela, as we mentioned, now living in Panama, where he's had his last three fights
00:01:32and has won them all, 17-2-2 with 12 knockouts.
00:01:36And Canizales, in his first title defense, what a thrill it must be for him,
00:01:40having won the crown from the previously undefeated Richie Sandoval,
00:01:44a very worthy champion indeed.
00:01:46Canizales, one of his only two losses, had been in a title bid against Jeff Chandler.
00:01:50Canizales, in white, and Pinango, in the blue trunks.
00:02:04First of three championship bouts on our Showtime telecast tonight,
00:02:08Tim Ryan with Gil Clancy and marvelous Marvin Hagler, our special guest commentator.
00:02:12Tim, it's surprising to see Canizales moving away in boxing.
00:02:33Usually he's moving that head, trying to slip and bang.
00:02:35But he's boxing right now.
00:02:37Part of that, do you suppose, the fact that he can't know very much about Pinango,
00:02:41in fact, I think it was difficult to locate videotape or films of this guy,
00:02:45as it may be learning about him here in round one?
00:02:48I think it's going to take him there, round one, just to get settled,
00:02:51just to get the feeling of this guy.
00:02:53As you can see by his slick, he's sneaky out there.
00:02:56And Yongo stands 5'7". That's tall for a bantamweight.

00:08:55Overhand right, as predicted by Marvelous Marvin, landed, and he landed a good solid left hook in this round, too, which moved the challenger back right there, right to the ear.
00:09:07Well, he's got his distance a lot better in there, you see now.
00:09:23Now he's getting a little meaner.
00:09:24Canizales, it appeared to me at the earlier part of that round, however, that's one of those rounds that's difficult to score.
00:09:31The challenger had the best of it, I thought, for more than the first half of the round, but the champion finished well.
00:09:37Now, who do you think, well, how do you think the judges saw it?
00:09:39It depends on which way to go, because Canizales had a lot more power on the end of his punches.

00:09:45His punches were more effective, but Finiago was the busier man over the round.

00:10:44There's a good right hand by the champion over the left.

00:11:03To me, if I was Finiago, I would say, whew, because he really swung that way.

00:11:23I think he's got to stay forward a little bit more instead of backing up.
00:11:27Because that's where this guy, Finiago is catching him at the end of his punches

00:12:49Well, Jimmy Paul will be defending his IBF lightweight title following this WBA Bantamweight championship out.
00:12:55And there is the champion from Detroit, Michigan, from the Crocs stable.
00:13:00And his thoughts about the challenger, Cubanito Perez.
00:13:03Well, not a prediction, but a little bit.
00:13:06Let's hear him.
00:13:09If I'm able to land a big right hand, I do have a big right hand to land.
00:13:13And it's a matter of me taking Perez's right hand away from him.
00:13:16And if I land, I should be able to score a knockout.
00:13:18But I don't predict a knockout.
00:13:20I think that I'm going to box it, you know.
00:13:22And if I get Perez in trouble, then I think I'm going to go for the knockout.
00:13:26Well, Jimmy Paul's stopping short of saying he was literally going to knock out Perez with a right hand.
00:13:31But he knows that's his best weapon and feels that if he lands it, anybody's going to go.
00:13:35And that fight follows this one.

00:13:39And when he retires from the game, he might be able to replace Joe Williams as a great blues singer.

00:13:53Gonzalez rallying in the third round as we saw it with his best round of the early going.

00:14:00You know, Pinheiro looked a little discouraged with himself at the end of that last round before the bell.
00:14:05I wonder if it still has any effect on him right now.
00:14:09He seems to be very, very calm and sure of himself to me.

00:14:16You wouldn't think that those lazy punches like that would connect.
00:14:21Well, he landed a few in that exchange with Canizales not throwing much back.
00:14:27That's been the pattern of the fight since it started.
00:14:30I'm surprised that Canizales against Sandoval is a beautiful combination puncher.
00:14:39I'm noticing that Pinheiro, he's starting to use the uppercuts now a lot more when he gets in tight to the body and to the chin.
00:14:52Do you know that you spar with a guy that has a similar style to Pinheiro?
00:14:56Yeah.

00:15:10Good solid right by the champion landed there, but again, didn't move Pinheiro at all.

00:15:15This guy looks like he's on a mission.

00:15:18All he wants to do is just win this Pinheiro.
00:15:21He's not letting anything bother him.
00:15:24He's sticking to his fight plan.
00:15:27He's liable to nail Canizales with one of those right hands.
00:15:29If Canizales keeps throwing right hand leads, a left hand and then a low blow.
00:15:34And a warning from Joe Cortez.
00:15:36But I think that Pinheiro's got the right attitude to come into this fight for a championship
00:15:41out.
00:15:42He's got the right attitude.
00:15:43Nothing's bothering him.
00:15:44He's staying to this game plan and he's trying to put his punches together and he's using both
00:15:47hands.
00:15:48Well, he's obviously bothering Canizales.
00:15:51This is not the same Canizales that we saw against Sandoval thus far.
00:15:56Well, it could be a system that he's trying to wear this guy down, but it takes a little
00:16:00bit more time to figure out his opportunities.
00:16:03We're in round four scheduled for 15.
00:16:07Gabi Canizales, his first title defense.
00:16:13He did not have to take the number one ranked Pinheiro in this fight, but he opted to.
00:16:18And it does do away with his mandatory defense against the number one rated Pinheiro.
00:16:22And that's, of course, provided that he wins the fight.
00:16:26Well, Tim, my first outing was with a number one candidate, too, and the one who knew about
00:16:29that was Fulio Bell.
00:16:31That's right.
00:16:33I wish more champions had that attitude to be better for boxing.

00:16:40And a good round to the challenger, as I saw at least, Pinango, having the better of the
00:16:45champion in the fourth round, and we're in his corner now, managed by the experienced
00:16:52Luis Espada, trained by Pedro Avila, and also in the corner, Hilario Zapata, the flyweight
00:16:59champion.
00:17:00I didn't see him in this picture, but there you see Zapata just at the top left of your
00:17:06screen with a mustache.
00:17:07Now, back in round number four, combination by the challenger.
00:17:19There was a six punch, seven punch, eight punch combination, nine punches, ten, without
00:17:25the chance.
00:17:26Canizal is throwing a punch back.
00:17:28Even though he did block many of those, as you point out, he didn't throw anything back,
00:17:31so you know the officials naturally have to score that heavily for Pinango.

00:17:48Pinango seems like he's going to come out of this round and do a little bit more boxing,

00:17:57Trying to use the jab a little more.
00:18:00It seems to me that if Canizalas is fighting the wrong fight, I think he should be slipping
00:18:04punches trying to counter and try to throw combinations instead he's trying out box a
00:18:08much taller guy and he's being vulnerable for those open hooks that's right anytime you get a
00:18:15wide puncher you want to stay inside you don't want to stay outside exactly see this is stuff
00:18:19that he's getting hit with and youngo landed a right hand the ear of the champion what gets me
00:18:24gabby's got to see those punches coming and just can't get away from him
00:18:34i like the way pinago comes to fight though you got to give him credit either you're gonna knock me

00:19:04while swings like that you got to make guys pay for it so they don't make the same mistake again

00:19:30right now it's tactical warfare but again when yango's able to get away with those wild swings
00:19:38he doesn't have to pay exactly calozal is not blocking them that well either he's getting tagged
00:19:44with them punches and they don't really look like they should be effective under a minute to go on round
00:19:49five he's probably confusing them i've scored two rounds there for pinago and
00:19:56lose solid left by the challenger and that backed up canazales

00:20:16he better start doing something stay close to this guy he's got long arms
00:20:21they're like they can beat you all across the ring

00:20:38against bernardo pinango in blue and having his hands full with this champion the unknown quantity

00:20:50and in the corner of the champion they have to be a little bit concerned
00:21:02let's go back into the fifth round action
00:21:06again pinango as awkward as as awkward as the punches are he's putting together he's throwing
00:21:14six seven eight punches at a time danazales one at a time or none but that last punch that
00:21:19corner was a half uppercut and a half hook with the left hand very effective
00:21:36you know luis mendoza giving his champion what for you didn't have to understand spanish to know
00:21:45that their little concern not pleased with the performance of canazales thus far
00:21:50do you notice all the water that's on pinango though on his trunks are soaked right now
00:21:55and his body's dripping with water instead of sweat you know uh uh marvin i work with a lot of latin
00:22:02fighters oscar bonavino alex mitdev rocky rivera quite a few and the latin trainers love to douse
00:22:09their fighters with water a couple of times that i thought they were going to drown them
00:22:14i don't think that wakes them up when that fight i'm soaking wet just like that
00:22:20doesn't take me long to heat up well you can see uh these two guys are knockout artists as their
00:22:27their records would indicate and uh the average rounds per bout that they have fought they're into
00:22:33round number six now so this is about the usual distance that they work well you know what i love
00:22:39about this fight you definitely have to keep your eyes on both guys because they are explosive with
00:22:43both hands and uh this fight can at any time one punch can change an entire fight but right now
00:22:49canazales best weapon is the jab and it's only one punch at a time where pinango is throwing punches
00:22:55in bunches and bunches there's the jam that's but it's one at a time let's put something else behind
00:23:01that every time he leans back to get out of the way of a hook he gets tagged with it
00:23:11i noticed that pinango is trying to set up his own pace and this is what gabby's got to do he's got
00:23:16to break that rhythm he landed a right and then a left with the champions gonzalez he's really snapping
00:23:22that jab in there now but again when he when he knocks pinango wall balance he's got to jump in
00:23:28quickly with no combination instead he backs up out of there and that's when pinango hit him with that

00:23:38i noticed that uh gabby really doesn't move his head that much you know for a small guy
00:23:43he really don't move his head that much it's only these kind of guys here basically a lot of bob and
00:23:47weavers that's right he's surprising me tonight i saw him slip punches a lot better than he's doing

00:24:08you know he's canazales and pinango it's pinango he's really not trying to put any power on it but
00:24:12he's just getting him out and that's what can frustrate a fighter nice left hook let's see if he's done

00:24:24been clashing a little bit with those heads in there now i think he's coming to fight now
00:24:31three punch combination that's a change he's got to come he's got to take it to this guy now

00:24:42that's the way he's got to fight and later uh following this bout will be the ibf lightweight
00:24:48championship and here is the challenger cubanito perez and cubanito perez born in cuba hence that nickname
00:24:55and now living in california will be taking on the champion jimmy paul from detroit michigan and
00:25:03it should be a most exciting lightweight title bout perez now been well regarded for a long time
00:25:10he's lost only once in his career a controversial close loss to hector camacho and many people feel
00:25:17that he really could have been a champion well before now well he's got a chance tonight
00:25:21to lift the title from jimmy paul in this dressing room you're seeing live shots here as it warms up

00:27:52good combination by canazales those are the kind of shots he's got to do real quick ones
00:27:58take advantage of when he lands a good shot like that though tim he has to jump right back in and
00:28:02throw three or four long all right he hasn't done that he's thrown a combination and then backed up
00:28:06almost consistently throughout he stops back to he stops to admire his work

00:29:23throwing more in combinations than the champion canazales but the better shots in that round were

00:33:53thing as pacing yourself they were supposed to be in shape to fight 15 rounds or 12 rounds or whatever
00:33:58it was at top speed exactly and i always i always felt that if you're told the fighter take it easy
00:34:03for a round to try to save yourself you throw the guy out of gear a lot of times you can't get back
00:34:07in here you get him back in there especially by being champion you know you know that this guy's
00:34:12out to take everything from you you really gotta look impressive out there but what's good about
00:34:17this fight is he's fighting the number one contender so you know this guy's no fluke well he was the
00:34:21silver medalist in the olympics and he lost he lost the one hundred as a cuban who was a heck of a
00:34:26fighter so he must be a pretty good solid background as a fighter well gabby's got him reaching right
00:34:31now he just got to take advantage of that execute those uh where he's reaching at shoot the straight
00:34:36right hands as he's throwing those big wide left hooks shoot the straight the snappy left jabs as
00:34:42he's trying to round them off with the with the right hooks he's got to beat him to the punch girl

00:40:44champion there is a slight cut and it looks like it's under the right eye which would not
00:40:51be a problem if it's under but we'll wait and see as eddie alo eddie aliana goes to work
00:40:59i noticed by his mouth being red that don't look so good and it's over it is over his right eye
00:41:04but they're applying the pressure so the champion now not only having difficulty with pinjango out
00:41:11punching him but now as you can see there's the little nick right under the eyebrow could be a
00:41:15problem and that's in a bad spot it's under the eyebrow in the eye socket and the doctor is in the
00:41:22ring looking at the cut now i don't think it's serious enough for them to stop it especially in
00:41:26a championship fight but it is a problem and i remember in the sandoval fight when canazales got cut
00:41:32then he fought the worst round of the fight took him up on a round to get himself back together
00:41:37after he got cut they won that battle from sandoval a seventh round knockout the unbeaten champion to
00:41:45the canvas five times and here he is in his first defense and in great difficulty against bernardo pinjango
00:41:53well these kind of fights like this shows you what it is to be a champion did you know how hard it is
00:41:59is if you just watch canazales feet you'll just see him edge back edges back he edges back stays
00:42:06within perfect punching range for pinjango to nail him with those wide punches just watch the feet for a
00:42:11while he's backing up backing up backing up he's got him on in he's got him on the end of every one of
00:42:16his punch pinjano does just watch watch canazales feet he just edges back edges back edges back now
00:42:25he'll go back a little bit further there he goes back again you might have too many moves
00:42:28back to you because gabby's just really throwing the same kind of combination there's no left hook

00:44:06outside that he hasn't shown too much of anything well he's got to step in with it keep it in there

00:46:48pace too he i think he has a sense of victory in this fight and he's been lifting his game in these
00:46:54last few rounds really taking it away from the champion well i see the champion really gonna have to

00:47:45when you're looking for that one punch knockout to get yourself back in or one punch knockdown or a
00:47:50knockout punch and when you land a couple of good ones it's got to be discouraging if the guy doesn't move
00:47:54him definitely well you know what you have to do either you have to go in speed or find some kind
00:47:58of other strategy and you should have about two or three different strategies to go with before you
00:48:02come into a fight if it's not working that's where that plan a and plan b came out of play
