00:30I normally pick up hitchhikers, and certainly not at night.
00:37I come up to the traffic light.
00:41There is a young girl with dark, long hair standing on the corner with her thumb out.
00:48Now I'm 19, but she looked younger than me.
00:51I'm like, what is this kid doing hitchhiking this late at night?
00:56What if some guy comes by and picks her up and then something happens to her?
01:00She said, I'm going to see friends in Berkeley Heights.
01:03I said, well, I can take you.
01:05She got in the car. I didn't ask her name.
01:08When I was playing Led Zeppelin, we talked a little bit about the music, but she was pensive.
01:20She was looking down, doing this.
01:22Playing with her chain.
01:27Like she had something weighing on her, for sure.
01:33When we got to the point where I had to turn off, I said, all right, here's my stop.
01:37How much further you have to go?
01:39She said, oh, my friends are just up there on the corner.
01:43She exited the car, and that was that.
01:48I spent 15 minutes with this girl, and then weeks and weeks later, I'm watching TV, breaking news.
01:59They find this body of this missing teenage girl.
02:03I said, oh, my gosh.
02:06That's the girl I picked up hitchhiking, Jeanette De Palma.
02:11She was found murdered at the Hooddale Quarry, laying up on a hill, face down, stones around her, crosses, branches made almost like a coffin.
02:32And then I read that witchcraft killed her.
02:41You know, I've been here all my life.
03:11I'm born and raised.
03:14It's a nice place to live.
03:17We'd be gone all day, playing in the streets.
03:23But when the street light came on, you best be home.
03:33There's a lot of witchcraft going on at that time.
03:37Animal sacrifices.
03:41There's this place called the Wachung Reservation.
03:47People would go up there and make out.
03:50But you wouldn't want to stay there after dark.
03:53They had satanic rituals up there.
03:56So you would read things in the paper about sacrifices.
04:02Like they found dead animals, mostly chickens.
04:07That wasn't just folklore.
04:09That really was going on up there, for sure.
04:12And, you know, it would always come up about Jeanette De Palma.
04:20How she was found.
04:22How she was murdered.
04:24Everybody thought, you know, they're going to catch the killer.
04:27And they never did.
04:35I keep hearing that people in Springfield are still afraid to this day.
04:41They talk about this case in hushed tones.
04:44They don't want to say too much.
04:46But since the day this happened, they can't get this off their minds.
04:53I'm a pastor in the Assemblies of God denomination.
04:56I was the pastor of Evangelical Church for 20 years, from 1992 to 2012.
05:06On a Sunday morning in July of 2004, church service had just ended.
05:14And Florence De Palma, Jeanette's mother, came up to the front, clearly upset.
05:19And she handed me an envelope, and she said,
05:25I don't know how much longer I have to live.
05:26You have to promise me that you'll do something about this.
05:34And I said, I don't know how, but I promise you I will do whatever I can.
05:41And I've held on to this envelope for the last 19 years.
05:49Whoever slayed Jeanette was certainly evil.
05:53And we believe as a church, there are people who will choose to do evil
05:57just because they want to choose to do evil.
06:00But we also believe there are people that can be motivated
06:03and prompted by supernatural evil forces to do evil.
06:09For Jeanette's case, I prayed a great deal about this.
06:14My first thought was interview the family.
06:19There is a picture of your sister, Jeanette.
06:27A beautiful girl.
06:30It brings back stuff I didn't know, and I probably buried.
06:34She died at such an early age.
06:3616 years old she was when she went to be with the Lord.
06:41She was kind, good-hearted, and a dedicated Christian.
06:45The church was a big part of that family.
06:51Also, Jeanette, she was involved with some of the activities at the church.
06:56Hi, my name is Wayne Tate.
07:07I'm a pastor in North Carolina.
07:09Back in the day, when I was a teenager,
07:13my dad was the pastor of a church here in New Jersey.
07:18Well, the church's name was Evangel Church in Elizabeth.
07:21I was already involved in helping with worship at church,
07:26and it was a very active congregation.
07:30And we experienced that, you know, Jesus-freak time in our church.
07:37Pray God! Pray God!
07:42Pray God!
07:43You're coming out of the 60s, the psychedelic time,
07:51the introduction of mind-altering drugs and all kinds of stuff like that.
07:56So I think that this was God's mercy on a generation to say,
08:01hey, let's get this figured out before you destroy your lives.
08:06Jesus Christ willingly went to the cross.
08:10We believe that God still shows up,
08:14miracles happen, and the Bible's true.
08:17All these hippies came into the church,
08:20and so many people turned from drugs.
08:25People's lives were absolutely changed, absolutely changed.
08:29I became involved in Evangel Church.
08:33I've been serving the Lord ever since.
08:35And the De Palma family was part of that congregation.
08:38That's how I knew Jeanette initially.
08:42She was a kind of just a classic beauty, I thought, very outgoing.
08:50I remember Jeanette went down to the front
08:53and asked the Lord to come into her life.
08:57You know, she was trying to turn her life around.
08:59I discovered Jeanette was on a spiritual journey,
09:03as we all were at the time,
09:05but a great girl, sweet girl,
09:07very active in wanting to share her faith.
09:11Jeanette was more than just a friend.
09:40for several months, three or four months or so, we dated.
09:43I don't think I officially said to her,
09:46hey, you want to go out?
09:47I think we just gravitated toward each other.
09:52But really, I never saw her outside a church.
09:55We lived in different towns.
09:59Jeanette felt we weren't able to give enough
10:02to the relationship.
10:03She kissed me on the cheek,
10:08turned around, and walked away.
10:10And that was the end of our relationship.
10:15About a month or so after that happened,
10:18we got the news that she was missing.
10:20She was just turning 16.
10:37We thought that she was going to work.
10:39This is what we had heard.
10:41You know, she never came home.
10:44Honestly, we just worried and just waited.
10:46There was a patrolman on patrol,
10:52and they just said that the Palmer girl is missing.
10:58She, like, just disappeared off the face.
11:01Nobody saw her after that or anything else.
11:05But they said, keep your eyes open
11:07while you're riding out on patrol.
11:09And we did.
11:10The stories kind of came back to us
11:14that the family felt she had run away.
11:18We figured she'd come back in a day or so
11:21because it still was not her nature
11:24to do something like that.
11:27You know, I was thinking,
11:28when she returns home,
11:31you know, maybe we'll get another chance.
11:34Jeanette was missing six weeks approximately
11:45before she was found,
11:47and it wasn't pleasant.
11:54I was on patrol.
11:56I got a radio call
11:58to go up to the Wilson Avenue apartments.
12:00Mrs. Trezong said that her dog
12:04brought this arm home.
12:10And I'm looking at it,
12:12and I said, this is a real human
12:14because I could see fingernails
12:17on the fingers.
12:21I said, this arm,
12:24it might be the missing girl.
12:27That afternoon,
12:28they got a search party together,
12:29and I teamed up with Ed Kish,
12:33one of the other police officers.
12:35We figured she had to be
12:37somewhere in that area,
12:38in the quarry.
12:43I was alone to find Jeanette's body
12:46in the quarry
12:47on the plateau.
12:51She was just laying face down.
12:55It was a little shocking
12:56when you got up there
12:57to see the body.
12:58her face was almost gone.
13:03Her toes were all gone
13:04from the animals eaten.
13:06And then your mind goes,
13:08if my daughters were like this,
13:11what would you do?
13:16When the body was found,
13:18it was a shock,
13:20you know?
13:20And then they went into,
13:23you know,
13:23her room to get
13:24a hair from her brush,
13:26I think,
13:27to identify her.
13:30After we got the news
13:31of what had happened,
13:33I'll never forget
13:34going with my dad
13:35to her home
13:36to talk with the family.
13:38and I can remember
13:40the door opening
13:41and the embraces
13:44and the tears
13:45and the crushing reality
13:49of it all.
13:50were they able to establish
13:56a cause of death?
13:58I have no idea.
13:59Everything was hush-hush.
14:01They never gave
14:02a cause of death.
14:05They didn't say
14:06it was a homicide
14:07and they didn't say,
14:08you know,
14:08she took her life.
14:10It just says suspicious,
14:12that's all.
14:14Poor girl.
14:15I never,
14:15never, ever
14:16seen anything like that.
14:18This was all new to me.
14:22When she was found,
14:24there was
14:25some sort of
14:28twigs found around her.
14:31Police from the
14:33Springfield Police Department
14:34said there were
14:35upside-down crosses
14:36and stones
14:37placed around her body,
14:39which indicate
14:40some kind of
14:41occult-like activity.
14:43This is how it started,
14:45this article here.
14:47I figured whoever
14:48killed her
14:48was possessed
14:49by demons.
14:50That set off
14:51a firestorm
14:52of news reporters
14:54that this could
14:55be witchcraft.
14:56Authorities said
14:57Jeanette,
14:58that may be linked
14:59to a coven
15:00or witchcraft
15:02assembly
15:03thought to exist
15:04in the area.
15:06How it happened,
15:07who did it,
15:08all I know is
15:09she was murdered.
15:11It was
15:12gut-wrenching.
15:14when Jeanette's mother,
15:24Florence,
15:24handed me this envelope
15:25and said,
15:26Pastor Brennan,
15:27will you please promise me
15:28you'll do something about this?
15:29This wasn't just Florence
15:30handing me an envelope.
15:32This was a commissioning
15:33from God.
15:35I would go to the quarry
15:37and it was
15:38very symbolic
15:39for me.
15:42Here I was
15:43right in front of
15:44the location
15:45where Jeanette
15:46was murdered.
15:49But I had
15:50no game plan.
15:52For a long period
15:53of time,
15:54I didn't know
15:55what to do.
15:57I needed someone
15:58to help me
15:59to further look
16:00into this case.
16:01and that's
16:02when I found out
16:03about an organization
16:04called Justice for Jeanette
16:06and
16:07I was in contact
16:09with them.
16:11I'm Ed Salzano.
16:13I run
16:14Justice for Jeanette.
16:15I'm Holly Zuel
16:16and I also run
16:18Justice for Jeanette.
16:20You know,
16:20Justice for Jeanette
16:21was created
16:21to solve this murder.
16:23We started
16:25investigating this case
16:26I believe
16:27in 2014.
16:28we lived
16:31in Springfield
16:32at the time.
16:34We came
16:35to the realization
16:36that Jeanette
16:37was murdered
16:38in the Hoodale quarry
16:39which was literally
16:40across the street.
16:42So we immediately
16:43felt drawn
16:44into the case.
16:47Who said it
16:48at the crime scene
16:50that witches
16:50are involved?
16:52Someone
16:53in the police department.
16:54We don't know
16:55who they are.
16:57And then it was
16:58all over
16:58the newspapers.
17:01Satanists
17:01may have slain girl.
17:04This is a quote
17:04probably from
17:05Pastor Tate.
17:06I'm assuming
17:07because they put
17:07quotes around
17:08Satanists.
17:09Pastor Tate
17:10believed that
17:11a group of Satanists
17:12which is
17:13killed Jeanette.
17:15So
17:15in this investigation
17:17we interviewed
17:18Pastor Tate.
17:19He was Jeanette's
17:20pastor at the time.
17:22She was very
17:23close with him.
17:24He was a very
17:25charismatic individual
17:26beloved by his people.
17:29Very influential
17:30in their lives.
17:32I also knew
17:33Pastor Tate
17:34personally.
17:36He would point
17:37people to the Lord.
17:38He was
17:39a fire and brimstone
17:41preacher.
17:42The first trumpet
17:43sounds
17:44the first thing
17:45that happens
17:46is hail
17:46and fire.
17:48Hail and fire.
17:49What does that
17:49make you think of?
17:50Sodom and Gomorrah.
17:51At the time
17:53my dad
17:54was very
17:54strongly
17:55convinced
17:56things were found
17:57at the crime scene
17:58that indicated
17:58it was
18:00occult related.
18:04We have no idea
18:06who it was
18:07or
18:07you know
18:08how it happened.
18:10All we know
18:11is how they found
18:12the remains.
18:14I don't think
18:14they had offered
18:15her the sacrifice.
18:16My dad
18:19had heard
18:19those reports
18:20from authorities
18:21from the
18:22Springfield Police
18:22Department
18:23I believe
18:23and he made
18:25some pretty bold
18:26statements about that
18:27to the media
18:28which they ran with.
18:30That just set off
18:31an incredible frenzy.
18:35They're saying
18:35she may have been
18:37captured
18:38by Satanists
18:39and then killed
18:40when she tried
18:42to lecture
18:42the group
18:43about Jesus Christ
18:44Jeanette may have
18:46been witnessing
18:46to them
18:47wow.
18:50But she was
18:50kind of a bold
18:51person
18:51and it doesn't
18:53strike me
18:53as impossible
18:54that she could
18:56have done that.
18:58Do you think
18:59that she was killed
19:00by witches?
19:03Yes.
19:04From what we've
19:05learned
19:05we would love
19:06to have crossed
19:07off witchcraft
19:08but we can't.
19:10here's what
19:12I think happened.
19:13I believe
19:14Jeanette was killed
19:15by teenagers
19:16that were involved
19:18in the occult
19:19and witchcraft
19:19and Satanism
19:20whatever you want
19:21to call it.
19:23They were trying
19:25to pull Jeanette
19:26into the coven.
19:30Instead
19:30she was actually
19:32trying to pull
19:33them back
19:34into church.
19:36She was helping
19:37lost teenagers
19:39find guns
19:40from God.
19:42You know
19:42she was at
19:43Jonathan
19:43Dayton High
19:44School
19:44where there
19:45was a lot
19:46of witchcraft
19:47going on.
19:48The newspaper
19:49reports said
19:50do pupils
19:51pray to the devil?
19:53At Jonathan
19:54Dayton High
19:54School
19:54Pastor Tate
19:57told me
19:57that after
19:58Jeanette
19:59was missing
20:00they searched
20:01her room.
20:01I grew up
20:15in Springfield.
20:16Witchcraft
20:17is very prevalent
20:17in this area.
20:19In the name
20:20of Satan
20:20the ruler
20:21of the earth
20:22the king
20:23of the world.
20:24This suburban
20:25mother
20:26is high priestess
20:27of a New Jersey
20:27grotto
20:28branch of the
20:29first church
20:29of Satan.
20:32Lilith
20:33we believe
20:33was recruiting
20:34teenagers
20:35to sell
20:36the satanic
20:37bible.
20:39Jeanette
20:39was learning
20:41about it
20:41trying to
20:43pull people
20:43away from it.
20:44This was a war.
20:50This was a war
20:51between the
20:51Christians
20:52in the area
20:52and the
20:53Satanists
20:53in the area.
20:56And it all
20:57started with
20:57Mr. List
20:58killing his
20:58family.
20:59In Westfield,
21:00New Jersey
21:00in November
21:01of 71
21:02he said
21:04I saved
21:04their souls
21:05from the
21:05devil.
21:07And if you
21:08look into
21:08his daughter
21:09Patty List's
21:10background
21:10she was
21:11into witchcraft.
21:13I mean
21:13it's one
21:14town over
21:14six months
21:16earlier.
21:17So all
21:18of the
21:18church people
21:19in the area
21:20were pretty
21:21freaked out.
21:23Girls
21:23sacrificed
21:24in witch
21:25rite
21:25I assumed
21:26oh that
21:28must be
21:29what
21:29happened
21:30to her
21:30because
21:32at that
21:33time period
21:33it's what
21:34was going
21:34on in
21:35our culture.
21:37Today
21:37young people
21:38are increasingly
21:39drawn to
21:39witchcraft
21:40and
21:40Satanism.
21:41in the 70s
21:47the world
21:48at the time
21:49was enmeshed
21:50in this
21:50drama
21:51of good
21:52against evil
21:53and the occult.
21:54A lot
21:55of serial
21:55murders
21:56going on
21:57related to
21:58the occult.
21:59Charles Manson
22:00and his followers
22:00are rumored
22:01to have performed
22:02satanic sacrifices
22:03in the area
22:03surrounding Los Angeles.
22:04There was
22:05an atmosphere
22:06of it must
22:08be evil
22:08it must
22:09be Satan
22:09and to me
22:12witchcraft
22:12is a
22:13decision
22:14that I'm
22:16going to
22:16worship Satan.
22:18The Satanists
22:18and the witches
22:19and the warlocks
22:20it was all
22:20that group
22:21going on
22:22at the time.
22:23We were told
22:24that they were
22:24everywhere.
22:26The witches
22:27wanted a
22:28sacrifice
22:29and Jeanette
22:30was the
22:31sacrifice.
22:33If all
22:34of this is true
22:34why are no
22:35witches arrested?
22:41This is
22:42speculation
22:42I'm not sure
22:44but they have
22:45a long history
22:45of getting away
22:46with murder.
22:52Ed is very
22:53zealous
22:53his zeal
22:55is very intense
22:56and at times
22:57and Ed will
22:58admit this himself
22:59he needs to be
22:59reined in.
23:01I don't know
23:01if witchcraft
23:02really killed
23:03Jeanette.
23:04I personally
23:05don't have
23:06hard evidence
23:07of that.
23:08It's very
23:08difficult to
23:09discern what's
23:10true
23:10and what's
23:12real.
23:19Even this
23:20many years
23:20later it
23:21doesn't really
23:22feel like we
23:23have that much
23:23more information
23:24to try to
23:25explain what
23:26happened to
23:26Jeanette.
23:26but I think
23:28it's important
23:28to remember
23:29that the
23:30sort of
23:30slice of
23:31witchcraft
23:32that we're
23:32talking about
23:32with Jeanette's
23:33case has
23:34this very
23:35Eurocentric
23:36Christian-centric
23:37origin.
23:38If there's a
23:39common definition
23:40for a witch
23:41across time
23:42it's power
23:43and power
23:44that might be
23:45frightening to
23:46the dominant
23:46group.
23:47Witchcraft
23:48do I gather
23:49because it's
23:49been distorted
23:50is not dealing
23:51with Satanism?
23:52No.
23:53The things
23:53that we don't
23:54understand
23:54are the things
23:55we're afraid
23:56of.
23:57The fundamental
23:58thing about
23:59the magical
24:00religions is
24:00that they say
24:01within yourself
24:02you are the
24:04god, you
24:05are the
24:05goddess.
24:06Our lady
24:06the moon
24:07waxes and
24:08wanes.
24:08Whatever a
24:09witch is
24:09if we think
24:10that they
24:10maybe have
24:11the power
24:11to corrupt
24:12our children
24:13or if we
24:14think they
24:15have the
24:15power to
24:16corrupt
24:16the good
24:17women of
24:18our community
24:18then that
24:19power is
24:20something that
24:20we can
24:20sort of
24:21identify
24:22as something
24:22that needs
24:23to be
24:23dealt
24:24with.
24:26For example
24:27the Salem
24:28witch panic
24:29started in
24:30winter of
24:311692 in
24:32the home
24:32of Reverend
24:33Samuel
24:34Parris.
24:39His daughter
24:40and his niece
24:41started to
24:42experience the
24:43symptoms of
24:44being bewitched.
24:47And the
24:48girl said
24:49these women
24:49in the
24:50community
24:50are witches
24:50and they
24:51have sent
24:52demons
24:52to possess
24:53us.
24:57This was a
24:57group of
24:58people who
24:58were very
24:59pious.
25:00They all
25:00believed in
25:01witchcraft and
25:02so took these
25:03accusations very
25:03seriously but it
25:05very quickly
25:05escalated.
25:11The Reverend
25:12Parris started
25:13to really
25:14elaborate a
25:16rhetoric of
25:17there's evil
25:17among us
25:18you're either
25:19with us or
25:20you're against
25:20and this kind
25:24of charismatic
25:25leadership from
25:26the pulpit
25:26can really
25:28change the
25:29way that you
25:29think about
25:30your community
25:30and that you
25:31think about
25:31your neighbours.
25:36Thinking about
25:37that is important
25:37because it
25:38reminds us how
25:40powerful words
25:41are especially
25:43from people who
25:44have power in
25:45our communities.
25:45why do you think
25:48Florence entrusted
25:49you with this
25:50rather than
25:51Pastor Tate
25:52who had she
25:52known for so
25:53long?
25:55Perhaps some
25:56comments that
25:56Pastor Tate had
25:57made at the time
25:58of Jeanette's
25:59murder would have
26:00discouraged her
26:01from asking him
26:01to do something
26:02about it.
26:02You know I
26:05remember seeing
26:06the headlines
26:07of the New York
26:08Daily News
26:08when my father
26:10made his
26:10comments that
26:11he believed
26:12that she was
26:12killed in a
26:13satanic ritual.
26:16There was a
26:17big frenzy
26:17about it.
26:18That became
26:19probably national
26:21news.
26:23I believe that
26:24detectives have
26:25since said
26:25none of that
26:26was really true.
26:28My understanding
26:29is that a
26:30police officer
26:31who was on
26:32the scene
26:32reported that
26:34he saw what
26:35looked like
26:35to him
26:36crosses around
26:38Jeanette's body
26:39and based on
26:40that one
26:40person's report
26:41then the story
26:43blew up.
26:44And then last
26:45fall due to
26:46her freedom
26:46of information
26:47request
26:48photographs were
26:49released of the
26:50crime scene
26:50depicting a
26:52crime scene
26:53completely
26:53different.
26:55Some of the
26:55articles portray
26:56Jeanette as
26:57laying in a
26:58coffin like
26:59structure.
27:00She wasn't.
27:00she was face
27:01down.
27:03There were
27:03limbs of trees
27:04on the ground
27:04as there would
27:05be in any
27:06forest.
27:09There's no
27:10evidence of
27:11any crosses
27:11around her
27:12body.
27:15Florence had
27:16never mentioned
27:17to me that
27:18in her opinion
27:18it had anything
27:19to do with
27:20the occult
27:20or witchcraft.
27:23She believed
27:24the headlines
27:24were distracting
27:26the world
27:27from the reality
27:28that her
27:2916 year old
27:30little girl
27:31walked out
27:32of her house
27:32and never
27:33came back.
27:35They were
27:35only paying
27:36attention to
27:37witches
27:38and the
27:38occult.
27:43So why do you
27:44think someone
27:45said that
27:45witches are
27:46involved?
27:49Either it's
27:50true
27:51or it's
27:52a scapegoat.
27:54Very early
27:55in this
27:56investigation
27:56the police
27:57brought a
27:58witch in
27:59as a
27:59consultant
28:00to examine
28:01the evidence
28:02and they
28:03brought her
28:04to the
28:04crime scene.
28:06I mean
28:06it was a
28:07police officer
28:08who kick-started
28:09the witch
28:10panic.
28:11So maybe
28:11it was to
28:12bolster the
28:13explanation
28:13that witchcraft
28:14was involved.
28:16Florence believed
28:17Jeanette was
28:17murdered.
28:19She felt
28:20the Springfield
28:21Police Department
28:21had been inept
28:22in their
28:23investigation
28:23of her case.
28:32When I found
28:33the body
28:33Ed Kish
28:35was my partner
28:36on our search.
28:39He had his
28:40own way
28:40of doing
28:41things.
28:42He was
28:43a little
28:43hardhead.
28:45He was a
28:46patrolman
28:47and then
28:48he went
28:48into the
28:49detective
28:49bureau
28:49as the
28:50juvenile
28:51officer.
28:53In school
28:54he knew
28:54who was
28:55doing what
28:55and what
28:56was going
28:56on because
28:57he had
28:58kids coming
28:59in and
28:59telling him.
29:00He knew
29:00a lot of
29:01stuff.
29:01He knew
29:01the family
29:02I guess
29:02and probably
29:03knew
29:03Jeanette.
29:06Ed Kish
29:07said that
29:09Jeanette
29:09was a bad
29:10girl.
29:10That she
29:11was a
29:11party girl
29:11and he
29:12had to
29:12pull her
29:12out of
29:13cars
29:13at the
29:13park.
29:15There
29:15was all
29:16kind of
29:16rumors
29:16floating
29:17around.
29:18I felt
29:18like she
29:19was painted
29:19as a
29:21partier
29:21and a
29:22wild kid.
29:24What we
29:24learned is
29:26she was
29:27just of
29:28age to
29:28where she
29:29would be
29:29going out
29:30and it
29:31seemed like
29:31that summer
29:32was very
29:33turbulent.
29:33There were
29:33a lot of
29:34parties.
29:35Girls at
29:35that time
29:36they would
29:36write things
29:37in their
29:38diary and
29:38I know
29:39that she
29:39had one.
29:39So this
29:44is a
29:46section
29:46of
29:47Jeanette's
29:47diary.
29:48There
29:49were just
29:49a few
29:50pages
29:50from the
29:51Union
29:51County
29:52prosecutor's
29:52office.
29:54But it's
29:54her last
29:55diary
29:55entry
29:55two weeks
29:56before she
29:57goes
29:57missing.
30:00July
30:0021st,
30:011972.
30:03After work,
30:04Gail and me
30:05hitched to
30:06McDonald's.
30:09I was so
30:10excited about
30:10seeing Joe.
30:15I walked
30:15in and my
30:16heart was
30:16beating 500
30:17times a
30:18second.
30:20Some dude
30:21comes over
30:21and tries to
30:22make it with
30:23me, shoving
30:24SC down
30:25my throat.
30:28When Joe
30:28saw me,
30:29he smiled
30:30and stared
30:30at me for
30:3110 minutes
30:31straight.
30:33Damn,
30:34I forgot
30:34what I was
30:35talking about
30:35because Joe's
30:36eyes turned
30:37me on.
30:40We decided
30:41to go for
30:41a walk.
30:43What can I
30:44say about
30:45winding up
30:46on the
30:46grass,
30:47but what
30:47a damn
30:48horny guy.
30:50But I
30:50was good.
30:53She's really
30:54not doing
30:55anything bad.
30:56She was a
30:57normal teenager.
30:58Was she
30:59perfect?
30:59Was she a
31:00church mouse?
31:01No,
31:01she wasn't.
31:04When you're
31:0515, 16,
31:06you're really
31:07in this
31:07boundary
31:08between
31:09childhood
31:10and young
31:11adulthood.
31:13And testing
31:14the boundaries
31:14is a natural
31:15thing to do.
31:17Young women
31:18have such a
31:18difficult time
31:20coming of age
31:21because any
31:22kind of
31:22experimentation
31:23can be
31:24reputationally
31:26damaging in a
31:26way that will
31:27follow them
31:28forever.
31:30Whether they
31:31intend it or
31:32not to raise
31:33the issue
31:34that this
31:34was somebody
31:35who was a
31:35bad girl
31:36and hearing
31:37that it
31:38was a
31:38police officer
31:39saying that
31:40about a
31:40victim of
31:41a horrific
31:41crime
31:42enrages me.
31:45Whoever is
31:45hearing that
31:46is going to
31:46think, well,
31:47she deserved
31:47it, or what
31:48was she doing
31:48that she
31:48shouldn't have
31:49been doing?
31:49What was
31:49she wearing?
31:50Who was
31:50she hanging
31:51out with?
31:51Was she
31:52drinking?
31:54It's victim
31:54blaming.
31:56If you kind
31:57of think about
31:57what was going
31:57on in Salem,
31:59looking at
31:59Jeanette's case,
32:01it's the same
32:01stuff.
32:02We have a
32:03community
32:04accepting the
32:05explanation of
32:07witchcraft,
32:08saying that a
32:09young teenage
32:10girl had gone
32:11astray.
32:16There were so
32:17many different
32:18rumors and so
32:19many different
32:19things said
32:20about Jeanette.
32:22And by bringing
32:23up the witchery
32:25and all of that,
32:26I wonder if it
32:27didn't provide
32:28cover for whoever
32:30really was
32:30responsible for
32:32Jeanette's murder.
32:34I haven't come
32:34to any conclusions,
32:35but some say
32:36maybe the police
32:37were involved
32:37or someone
32:38connected to the
32:39police were
32:39involved.
32:41Even Jeanette's
32:42mother was
32:43wondering if
32:43there wasn't
32:44a cover-up
32:44because the
32:46Springfield Police
32:46Department had
32:47done such a
32:47poor job and
32:48they hadn't
32:48thoroughly
32:49investigated.
32:52From what
32:53we've been told,
32:54a police officer
32:55handled Jeanette's
32:56pocketbook,
32:58picked it up
32:58on a crime scene
32:59and searched
33:00it for drugs
33:01or identification
33:01and then put
33:02it down.
33:04There's a police
33:05report that says
33:06later on,
33:07four officers
33:07were sent back
33:08to retrieve
33:08the pocketbook
33:09and they
33:09couldn't find it.
33:11So, where's
33:12the pocketbook?
33:13What'd you do
33:14with it?
33:15The more
33:16though I researched
33:17and looked into it,
33:19I began to question
33:20the whole thing.
33:21I would be very
33:21curious to know
33:22the extent to which
33:24the network of
33:25people she was
33:26connected to
33:27was investigated,
33:29especially with
33:30respect to the
33:31men in her life.
33:33I fully expected
33:35that people would
33:36ask me questions
33:37and when it never
33:38happened, I was
33:39shocked, to be
33:40honest with you.
33:41I never heard
33:42from the police
33:43or anyone in
33:45authority about
33:46Jeanette's case.
33:48Jeanette's brother,
33:49John, told me that
33:50he hadn't even been
33:51interviewed.
33:52He said, of course,
33:53I had nothing to do
33:53with it, but you
33:54would think
33:54they'd interview
33:55the family.
33:56Each of those
33:57family members
33:58should have been
34:00talked to.
34:01The absence of
34:02that kind of
34:02investigation is
34:04not only troubling,
34:05but I confess it's
34:06suspicious.
34:07I think she was
34:08targeted.
34:09I believe that
34:10the teens that
34:11were involved,
34:13their parents or
34:14relatives were
34:14police officers,
34:16and they covered
34:17it up.
34:19Jeanette was
34:20being chased by
34:21these boys.
34:23says right here
34:24in the diary
34:25that the boy
34:26is shoving
34:26Southern Comfort
34:27down her throat.
34:28That's alcohol.
34:30These two
34:31greasers tried
34:32to, you know,
34:33get with her
34:34as she said.
34:35I was happy
34:36until some
34:36greasers decided
34:37to lay down
34:38so he could
34:39have me.
34:42So they were
34:43coming on to
34:44her, you know,
34:46and I don't even
34:47know if she had
34:47a choice sometimes.
34:49They can be
34:49really aggressive,
34:50young teenage
34:51boys.
34:52The whole
34:54aspect of
34:55these two
34:55boys keeps
34:56popping up.
34:56It's two
34:57boys, two
34:57boys, two
34:57boys.
35:08The night I
35:09picked up
35:10Jeanette De Palma,
35:11she said she
35:12was meeting
35:12friends.
35:13So I turned
35:17the corner
35:17right like
35:18this and
35:20watched her
35:21go up to
35:23the traffic
35:24light.
35:27It was a
35:28clear view
35:28for me to
35:29see her walk
35:30up and meet
35:31her friends
35:32right at that
35:32corner.
35:34Two or three
35:35young guys
35:36and a girl,
35:37they were under
35:38the streetlight
35:39on the
35:39corner.
35:44After they
35:44found her,
35:45I talked
35:46to the
35:46police.
35:54Missing off
35:55this report
35:56is that
35:57she was
35:58meeting
35:58two or
35:59three boys
36:00and there
36:01was one
36:01female on
36:02that corner.
36:03So that's
36:04missing
36:04who, whoever
36:06these people
36:07were, did
36:08the police
36:09talk to
36:09them?
36:10Who was
36:11interviewed?
36:12Whose friends
36:13did they seek
36:14out?
36:14We don't
36:15know.
36:18You have to
36:19question everything
36:20in this
36:21investigation.
36:22The cold
36:23case detective
36:23told me,
36:24said the
36:26murderer could
36:26walk in to
36:28this office and
36:29say I did
36:29it and I
36:30wouldn't be
36:30able to do
36:31anything because
36:32it's not a
36:32homicide.
36:33It's a
36:33suspicious death.
36:35We started
36:36a petition
36:37to change
36:38Jeanette's
36:39death from
36:39a suspicious
36:40death to
36:41a homicide.
36:43It's gaining
36:44momentum.
36:45People are
36:45signing up
36:46to this
36:46day.
36:47Once it's
36:48declared
36:48a homicide,
36:49then state
36:50police can
36:51reinvestigate,
36:52but I would
36:53even prefer
36:53beyond that,
36:54that new
36:55sets of
36:55eyes take
36:56a look
36:56at this.
36:58We looked
36:59at the
37:00FBI crime
37:01lab report
37:02and saw
37:03that Jeanette
37:04had clothing
37:04and it
37:05was too
37:06decomposed
37:07for microscopic
37:08analysis at
37:09the time,
37:10but there
37:10might be
37:11DNA evidence
37:13on it.
37:18Because I'm
37:19trying to find
37:19an answer,
37:20there is a
37:21pressure.
37:22Am I doing
37:23enough?
37:23Is there
37:24more that I
37:24can do?
37:25Is there
37:25something that
37:25I'm missing?
37:26and we are
37:29putting out
37:30a plea to
37:30the community
37:31again to
37:33please come
37:33forward with
37:34any information
37:34you may have
37:35about Jeanette's
37:36murder.
37:41My name's Ed
37:43Salzano.
37:44I run
37:45Justice for
37:45Jeanette.
37:46We're living in
37:47an age of DNA
37:49technology that's
37:50pretty miraculous
37:50and there's
37:51there's no
37:52reason why
37:53after 50
37:54years,
37:54today is 50
37:55years,
37:56that this case
37:57can't be closed
37:58once and for
37:59all.
37:59And justice
38:00has not been
38:01rendered for
38:02Jeanette.
38:03And we're here
38:04today to say,
38:05Jeanette,
38:06we have not
38:08forgotten you.
38:09some people
38:15still believe
38:16that witchcraft
38:17might have
38:17been involved
38:17even though
38:19there's no
38:19hard evidence
38:20of that.
38:21I think that's
38:22where conspiracy
38:22theories come
38:23from.
38:24There's something
38:24not quite right,
38:25you don't know
38:27an answer,
38:27so you're
38:28desperately
38:28looking for
38:29answers and
38:30you'll kind
38:30of come up
38:31with what
38:32makes sense
38:33to you,
38:33whether it's
38:34right or not.
38:35And we keep
38:36pounding the
38:37pavement and
38:37making those
38:38phone calls.
38:38we're going
38:39to solve
38:39this because
38:40I think
38:40it's solvable.
38:41This had
38:41nothing to do
38:42with witchcraft.
38:43This is a
38:44murder that
38:45has not been
38:46solved,
38:46that needs
38:47to be solved
38:47and my
38:49prayer is that
38:50it will be
38:50solved and
38:51soon.
38:53We missed
38:54Jeanette.
38:55She's not
38:56dead, she's
38:57alive and
38:57she's walking
38:58with Jesus
38:58now and
39:00it's that
39:00circumference
39:01too to us.
39:02Yes.
39:04I'm hoping
39:05that
39:07that whoever
39:11did this
39:12heinous crime
39:13would come
39:15forward.
39:20Jeanette's
39:20case in
39:21The Witch
39:22Panic, it
39:23is a testament
39:24to the
39:25corrosive
39:26effects of
39:27sexism on
39:28our culture.
39:28I think
39:30any time
39:31you see
39:32a woman
39:33in power
39:34and who
39:35is seen
39:36as threatening
39:37get ready
39:39for a
39:40witch hunt.
39:41as
39:50a man
39:51as
39:51a man
39:54a man
39:55who
39:56is
39:57are
39:57the
39:59another
39:59one
40:00who
40:01is
40:01one

40:03two
40:03and
40:03they
40:04have
40:04been
40:05Ah
40:05and
