00:00listen up men and women and robots i'm not going to talk to you about winning and losing i'm not
00:16going to talk to you about math or science either but i will tell you this the hopes and dreams of
00:21thousands of brain pop fans are riding on your shoulders you need to win but more importantly
00:28you need to want to win you need to want to want to know how to you need to know how to play football
00:34like all the rules and regulations
00:38and you need me to tell you in less than three minutes but i stayed up all night writing that
00:46cool speech oh fine american football is played on a rectangular field called a gridiron
00:57it's exactly 100 yards long and 160 feet wide
01:02sorry there's no metric system in football the ball looks like this the equipment looks like this
01:12and the game is divided into four 15 minute quarters
01:16of course a game takes a lot longer than an hour since the clock stops during timeouts
01:23penalties injuries incomplete passes halftime measurements wardrobe mouth okay okay each team
01:32puts 11 of its players on the field at once one team starts out playing offense and one team starts
01:40out playing defense the goal of the offense is to move the ball down the field all the way into the
01:46opponents end zone the offense is led by a player called the quarterback and there are a couple ways he
01:58can move the ball he can pass it through the air and have a receiver run downfield to catch it or he can
02:06hand it off to a running back who'll try to break away and run with it toward the end zone
02:10it's up to the defense to stop them
02:14defensive players try to tackle whoever's carrying the ball and break up pass plans before the receiver
02:22can make a catch
02:22of course the offense can only run a single play at one time in football these individual plays are called
02:31downs a down usually ends when the player with the ball is tackled or forced out of bounds
02:37the ball is placed at the spot where the last play stopped and the next down begins
02:43each offense is given four downs to move the ball 10 yards
02:49if they can make it they get another four downs to move another 10 yards
03:01if they can't make it the other team's offense takes over
03:12i'm getting there if a team moves the ball all the way downfield into the opponent's end zone
03:21they score a touchdown
03:23that's worth six points
03:27when a team scores a touchdown they're allowed to try for an extra point by kicking the ball between the goal posts
03:34sometimes the team gets close to the opponent's end zone but can't make it all the way in
03:44instead of just giving the ball to the other team they can kick a field goal and that's worth three points
03:50after a team scores it kicks the ball off to the other team and puts its defense on the field
03:57now it's the other team's chance to try and score
04:00well you can try for a field goal from anywhere on the field but no one has ever kicked one more than 65 yards
04:08usually a team won't try it unless it gets pretty close to the end zone
04:12oh good question
04:15let's say one team's offense is having trouble moving the ball but they're too far away from the end zone
04:22to try for a field goal
04:23in that case they can use their fourth down to punt the ball down the field
04:28that way when the other team's offense takes over they'll have a long way to go before they can score
04:35um before you go out there there are about a trillion other things you need to know
04:43like let's say an offensive player drops the ball as he's running with it
04:49if a defensive player picks it up his team gets to keep it and go on offense
04:54that's called a fumble
04:56if a defensive player catches a pass thrown by the quarterback they get to keep it then too
05:02that's called an interception
05:05so when you're out there today try not to do either of those things
05:10don't forget those guys in the stripy shirts
05:14they're they're called the officials and they enforce all the rules and regulations
05:18now let's go out there and get them
05:21oh
