Updates from the Dolphins 2nd joint practice in Detroit. Omar Kelly tweets he has never seen a fan base outright hoping their team loses... is there any truth to what he's saying?
Transcript
00:00Let me give you, because we have a lot to talk about today.
00:02Mike Cugno is going to join us from Detroit.
00:05You had the joint practice number two.
00:09Seems like the Dolphins may have won this one.
00:11I saw some pots and pans out on Glades Road.
00:14I asked some people, well, what's going on?
00:17And they said, good Dolphins practice.
00:20Yeah.
00:21I joined in.
00:21I always keep pots and pans in my car just for instance like that.
00:26Mike Cugno is going to join us from Detroit.
00:29Clay Ferraro is going to join us today as well.
00:31Crowder is traveling.
00:33He's in Indianapolis.
00:34You know, he was with us yesterday from Detroit.
00:37They are now at the Indianapolis training camp.
00:40I'm actually watching Indianapolis on the SportsCenter right now.
00:43They're in Indy.
00:45He's going to try to join us.
00:47He doesn't know if he has the acceptable space to do so because he may just have to set up
00:54a computer outside on a practice field.
00:56But we will keep our eyes peeled for him.
00:59I want to know what that looks like where Crowder says, yeah, I got to set up out here.
01:03And, you know, I'm assuming finding a stand.
01:06Yeah.
01:06I'm assuming it's him in the bleachers, like just in the bleachers on, you know, his, he's
01:11got his little, uh, uh, little snowball microphone and then on an iPad.
01:15I mean, that's pretty much how I envisioned it.
01:18Uh, let me give you the training camp report that's sponsored by Miami-Dade County public
01:22schools, technical colleges, MDCPS technical colleges offer over 60 affordable accredited
01:28programs day or evening hands-on training aligned with local employers.

01:40I'll give you from today's joint practice from Chris Perkins in the Sun Sentinel stock up
01:45and stock down for your Miami Dolphins.
01:48He's got stock up D Eskridge as D Eskridge had an outstanding touchdown reception over
01:55cornerback DJ Reed that excited the entire Dolphins sideline Eskridge who's earning a spot
02:02on the 53 man roster has provided excitement as a wide receiver and kickoff and punt returner
02:08last week at Chicago, he had a 41 yard kickoff return and a 16 yard punt return.
02:13So stock up according to the Sun Sentinel D Eskridge stock down back up, right tackle
02:20Larry Borum.
02:21He was going against, uh, Aiden Hutchinson.
02:24That ain't an easy matchup.
02:25It is not a perk rights.
02:27He was going against Aiden Hutchinson, one of the league's best, but he surrendered a sack
02:31and numerous pressures Thursday.
02:33The concern is Borum who remains a backup to injured starting right tackle.
02:38Austin Jackson didn't show much improvement from Wednesday.
02:42The Dolphins must hope Borum's lack of adjustment.
02:45Isn't a common thread among backup offensive linemen.
02:50That's tough matchup Aiden Hutchinson, and he's got something to prove this season.
02:54He was out last season.
02:55So I'm not, uh, I'm not going to count Borum out just yet.
02:59Headlines with Solana brought to you by Doral Volkswagen.
03:03Doral VW just broke the rules of gravity.
03:05Prices are falling so fast.
03:07We're checking for a crater.
03:08Volkswagen's priced like they lost their minds.
03:12Doral VW.
03:13Buckle up.
03:13No one sells for less.
03:15Crater.
03:16Crater.
03:19Crater?
03:20I barely knew her.
03:21Hey, anyway.
03:24Uh, day two of joint practices.
03:26Have you read any of this, um, this like deep dive into Mike McDaniel and the Miami Dolphins
03:32and the athletic?
03:33A lot of people were posting about it.
03:35They're tweeting about it.
03:36Jeff Howe got to sit down with McDaniel and, uh, he did a piece on him.
03:41But one of the things that, um, kind of struck me in the first couple paragraphs here, McDaniel
03:48said five players on the 2024 roster incurred half of the team's internal fines for distractions
03:57incurred in what half incurred incurred, incurred, incurred, incurred, almost got it on the third
04:05try.
04:05I think I got it on the first try.
04:07You had incurred on the first one.
04:09You had incurred.
04:11That's a, that's a ridiculous word to use.
04:14Nobody uses that in 2025.
04:15Come on, come on, Jeff, uh, half of the old word, like groceries, of course.
04:24So let's just say the Dolphins were intentional about the players they wanted to retain this
04:28season, along with the kinds of players they wanted to add to the roster.
04:32But what about Tyree kill?
04:33And he goes into Tyree kill.
04:34Um, but couldn't get anything for him.
04:39That is interesting.
04:40Five players on the roster last year.
04:43So I see a lot of people tweeting about that, but that doesn't strike me as that odd because
04:48you know, no, no, not at all, but talking, but people seem to be like, wow, only five.
04:53Like if you're talking about internal fines, not talking about league fines for wearing
04:58your socks wrong or getting lippy with an official or whatever, if you're talking about
05:02internal fines, you're only going to have a handful of guys who aren't following the
05:08rules.
05:09Yeah.
05:09So that didn't strike me as odd.
05:11And we can probably pick out who the five are.
05:14I mean, right.
05:14I really thought about it.
05:15So that's all I'm, I'm, I'm, I'm highlighting here.
05:17I don't, I didn't find it odd as in, Oh, only five guys.
05:21No, no, no.
05:21It makes all sense in the world.
05:23It's the guys you kind of expected behind the scenes to be a pain in the ass.
05:28Tyree kill, who we all know is a part of that list.
05:31I bet my life savings on it and Jalen and Jalen Ramsey, who doesn't want to be here and
05:37kind of took a shot at Mike McDaniel the other day on the pivot.
05:40So I, I, I just thought it was obvious.
05:43Like of those five, those two are a hundred percent lions share.
05:49Yeah.
05:49Right.
05:50Right.
05:52Well, if, uh, if you think there's any chance the dolphins are still going to trade Tyree kill
05:56could be Javon as well.
05:58You know, Javon friend of ours, I mean, they never really got serious with him.
06:02He may be one of those guys that they earmarked for departure said, you know what?
06:07He's not buying into our program.
06:10He's not, you know, possible.
06:13He doesn't strike me as show up late.
06:15I don't know, but he doesn't strike me as show up either.
06:18I'm just saying like, there were guys who they got rid of or guys who asked out and Javon
06:24Holland seemingly wanted to stay here.
06:27They never really seemed like they had any interest in giving him anything of that was
06:35come close to what the giants were offering.
06:37But, but I think what it was, because remember even entering last year, he wanted to get paid
06:43and there was like no conversation with the dolphins.
06:46It was basically, we'll talk to you next year, which I think really pissed him off.
06:50It rubbed him the wrong way.
06:51I think he put himself, he played himself into a category of guys.
06:57We're going to get paid X amount at least.
06:59And the dolphins didn't value him as somebody who they needed to pay that much money to
07:05at that position.
07:06They just didn't, which is why I think he was always, and he, he understood that he was
07:10on the outs here.
07:11Like he knew, Hey, in free agency, I'm going to make this much money.
07:15So you got to pay me this much money.
07:17And the dolphins are like, nah, we're not going to pay you that much money.
07:21Sorry.
07:21We don't value at that much.
07:23So that relationship, I think last off season just deteriorated.
07:28It's, it's seen usually, you know, if they're making a run at keeping somebody, even if it
07:35seems like you're not going to be able to keep them.
07:38And it was pretty clear.
07:40They weren't making any kind of run at keeping them.
07:43Yeah.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Well, I'll, I'll keep sharing some tidbits from this article as I, uh, I read it during
07:51the break, but I don't know.
07:52I just found that, you know, pretty straightforward there.
07:55Five guys had half of the fines inside the building.
07:58I think we all kind of have an idea of who a couple of those dudes were.
08:01Yeah, no doubt.
08:02Tyreek didn't practice today, by the way, but as you mentioned, Jalen Waddle was back out
08:07on the practice field and Hawk, I am changing my entire mentality on this team after today's
08:13practice yesterday, I tempered expectations today.
08:16I am raising expectations.
08:18I've got them in the Superbowl, Superbowl, Superbowl.
08:21Yeah.
08:22Against the truth.
08:23Omar Kelly tweeted out today.
08:25I've covered the dolphins for 18 years, not even in their tank for two a season.
08:30Have I seen this fan base actively rooting against their team?
08:34Like this year, 2025 has a shot to be good, but not if you listen to Miami's own fan base.
08:42And he points out, keep in mind, I've seen 20 more practices than you.
08:46I'm down with Omar.
08:47I don't know what's going on here.
08:49I know maybe because people want to be rid of Chris Greer and Mike McDaniel, and maybe
08:55even to, uh, that they want the bottom to drop out because they know that's the way
09:02to ensure that those guys won't be coming back.
09:05I don't feel that way, but I'm in agreement with Omar.
09:08It feels to me like a lot of dolphins nation is just kind of almost celebrating a terrible
09:15practice like yesterday and gloating and preening around doing the, I told you so.
09:22And how come no one else in dolphins management sees what I'm seeing coming?
09:26And I'm like, Hey man, this team is nowhere near as bad as you think they are.
09:32They might actually be good.
09:33Here's the thing though.
09:35And I, I, I'm not rooting for the dolphins to lose.
09:38Obviously I'm, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, somebody who you could call detractor of this team,
09:44I guess, but Hawk, the owner put out a statement after last year that status quo would not be
09:54good enough.
09:55Correct me if I'm wrong.
09:56He put out a statement.
09:57He had to come out because of how upset people were and he said status quo would not be good
10:02enough.
10:02The goal remains the same to go compete.
10:04And I think we, we all are understanding that this, this roster, this team right now
10:11is, is just status quo, which is what upsets me.
10:14I'm not rooting for them to lose.
10:16And I don't think they're terrible.
10:17I think they're a, you know, nine and eight football team.
10:19I think they're fine, but that's not, that's not what the owner told us was going to be
10:24acceptable, which is why I don't, I don't think so.
10:27I think, I mean, two separate things, obviously no one wants a status quo season because it
10:32was a disappointing season.
10:33Everybody wants improvement and there has to be a trip to the playoffs.
10:37And really there has to be a playoff victory.
10:39I mean, let's not kid ourselves, but to say that status quo is not acceptable is a lot different
10:48than almost rooting for your team's demise, which is what Omar is suggesting fans are doing.
10:54And I do find, because even yesterday I'm getting tweets and texts going, Hawk, how much are the
11:00dolphins paying you?
11:02Like you're on their payroll because it's ridiculous what you're saying.
11:05And, uh, and I say this every year, I'm not getting paid anything by the dolphins.
11:08Not only am I not getting paid anything by the dolphins, we don't have any relationship with the
11:12dolphins whatsoever.
11:13When I say none, none, I would not know who to call to get a guest on the air.
11:22That's how little a relationship, by the way, bad on them.
11:26I'm not, I'm not, I'm like, that's not on me.
11:28That's on them.
11:29Um, I wouldn't know where to start with getting dolphins on the show.
11:35Joe Rose obviously has access because he's one of their broadcasters, but it's not on
11:40our station.
11:41And I, I, I usually go to a, a one preseason game.
11:46I'm not going to Jacksonville game.
11:48I don't even know who to ask for, for tickets.
11:51So I don't get any money or any, anything from the dolphins.
11:56I happen to like to, uh, I happen to think 2023 was more representative of this team than
12:03last season.
12:04That's it.
12:04That's what I'm banking on.
12:06I could be wrong.
12:07I'm not telling you I'm not wrong, but I'm not a mouthpiece for the dolphins, but I'm an
12:11optimist anyway.
12:13You know, people like, oh, you do this every season.
12:15Yeah.
12:16How wants to go into a season going like I did that with the Marlins and I've been pleasantly
12:20surprised.
12:21I was not high on the Marlins going into the season.
12:23They surprised me and that's great.
12:25But I don't default to, oh, poor us.
12:28This team sucks.
12:30We only have a quarterback that almost, uh, was the MVP two seasons ago and threw for
12:344,000 yards and a receiver that almost hit 2,000 yards receiving it.
12:39Like, yeah, no, I think it's pretty decent team.
12:42Yeah.
12:43I think they're decent.
12:44I think you're right, but I'm, I don't want decent.
12:47That's where you and I differ.
12:48I don't want decent.
12:49I want great.
12:50I understand that, but you can't get to great from not great in one fell swoop.
12:57It just doesn't happen.
12:58But at what point are we like expecting great that that's, you know, I don't want to get
13:04into the whole thing again, but Hawk, I mean, my entire life, this team is, this team has
13:08been this, but you, you can't go from missing the playoffs to winning the Superbowl.
13:15It just doesn't happen.
13:16Yeah.
13:16But I'm not asking to go win the Superbowl.
13:18I'm just asking to be one of the teams in the mix to go win the Superbowl.
13:22Well, I think they've got the talent.
13:24No, we'll see.
