San Fernando East MP Brian Manning is chastising trade union leaders for abandoning the working class in their plight as government has taken decisions which have led to thousands being jobless.
Transcript
00:00Former Minister in the Ministry of Finance, Brian Manning, is warning citizens of what he says are the first acts of a vindictive government.
00:09We will not allow the people of San Fernando East to be victimized by this government.
00:16Because that is clearly what they are out to do, ladies and gentlemen.
00:19Thousands of CPEP workers out of jobs overnight without a care in the world.
00:30But possibly worse, Manning says, are those supporting the uncaring moves.
00:36Is that there are leaders of the trade union movement involved with this government.
00:41And they had absolutely nothing to say.
00:45Trade union leaders, who are supposed to be the representatives of the working class and the people in this country.
00:53All of a sudden they wear a jacket and tie.
00:56They're up on two legs.
00:59Those leaders, he says, have turned their backs on the people they are charged to serve.
01:03A man who was in office for barely three months now, when asked about the tens of thousands of CPEP, URP and forestry workers who were summarily dismissed from their honest jobs, described them callously as collateral damage.
01:22This is a trade union leader.
01:25And that is why the people's national movement has always warned about politicized unions.
01:30Speaking to the audience at the Pleasantville Community Centre, Manning says, while CPEP workers are on the breadline, union leaders are carrying on as usual.
01:42We have trade union leaders in this country who are no longer loyal to their membership.
01:47They are loyal to their UNC masters.
01:50And you're seeing it loud and clear.
01:52Union leaders making $100,000 a month off their membership dues, talking about their members and their working class, while kissing up and answering to the Prime Minister.
02:05He also responded to a statement made by the Prime Minister that through CPEP, we have become a nation of grass cutters.
02:12Oh, how disrespectful.
02:15Let me tell the Prime Minister what my grandmother told me when I was growing up.
02:20That there is nothing wrong with an honest day's work.
02:27What message is the Prime Minister sending to the young people of this country?
02:31They took people who are waking up every morning, going to work, doing their jobs, putting food on their families' tables, clothes on their backs, and sending them to school, dismissed them, and now they want to send them to social welfare to beg for handouts from the government.
02:51Thank you very much.
