00:00This one got your attention, though.
00:01This is from Sherm's podcast.
00:03Richard Sherman spent time, seemingly all week, by the way, at Niners camp.
00:08And he talked to Shani, and he talked to Brock, and he talked to Kittle,
00:12and he talked to D'Amador Lenore.
00:16I'm going to be the best corner in the league this year.
00:18I love it.
00:19You heard it here first on the Richard Sherman podcast,
00:21the best corner in the league, D'Amador Lenore.
00:23The money didn't change me.
00:24You know, I really would come in and work and just prove my worth.
00:26I was just telling them that I'm ready for any challenge.
00:28If it's got to be 99 plays in man, or if it's got to be 99 in zone,
00:32I'm willing to back up anything that I put out there.
00:34Do you feel like DB and other coaches have kind of leaned on you
00:37to be that voice in the room?
00:38I mean, all our examples has left.
00:40You know, I've got to show that leadership to show them how we set the standard here.
00:43Okay, there's D'Amador Lenore.
00:46He is going to be the best corner in the league this year.
00:50You know, this is how guys talk, especially receivers, DBs.
00:54This is kind of how it is.
00:56But I don't know.
00:58I got nothing against the bravado.
01:01And I'm interested to see how the 49ers deploy him.
01:05Yeah.
01:05Is he following WR1, or is he taking one side of the field?
01:10Like, how do they plan on doing it?
01:11A lot of times that is a personal preference.
01:14And also what he said in that cut is, you know, 99 plays a man, 99 plays a zone,
01:19doesn't matter.
01:20When you play zone, obviously you're just going to play a side.
01:24And if you play man, that's where it might be a time where he does want to travel and
01:30just match up against the best receiver.
01:32And I did a little bit of a dive, not a total deep dive, but just looking at pro football
01:37focus and the receivers they're going to go against.
01:41He's going to go against.
01:42And, you know, how difficult will that task be?
01:45And just running down their list, and of their top 32 receivers that they listed, he's going
01:51to face 14 of them, including...
01:53Wait, of the top how many?
01:5532 they listed.
01:56He's going to face the top 14 of the top.
01:5914 of the top.
01:59So that's not easy.
02:01Like, yeah, it is interesting.
02:03You think of, are there any good teams on the schedule?
02:06Maybe not that many, but are there some good receivers?
02:09Because there aren't great quarterbacks.
02:11There's not great quarterbacks.
02:13We brought this up.
02:14Four of their games are against quarterbacks who are in Sandoz, Tier 1 and Tier 2.
02:21And Matt Stafford is the Tier 1 guy, so you face him twice.
02:24And then there's Baker Mayfield and C.J. Straub.
02:26That's right.
02:27Everybody else is Tier 3 or below.
02:29Yeah, you've got six games against Tier 4, and I wrote them down.
02:33It's Flacco, but I just put Flacco, Cleveland.
02:36I guess, yeah, Shadour, someone.
02:37Richardson, Indianapolis, and Rattler, New Orleans.
02:41Like, those three, no matter who they have, it's a Tier 4.
02:44Well, and they're facing the No. 1 pick in the draft who's not even eligible to be on
02:47the list anymore because he hasn't played yet, and that's Cam Ward for the Tennessee
02:51Titans.
02:51They'll be facing him as well.
02:53Yeah.
02:54In theory.
02:54Yeah, I guess I didn't put down a Tennessee quarterback.
02:57I have Daniel Jones in there as Tier 4.
03:00Is he on Tennessee?
03:01I don't even know who he plays for.
03:02He's along with Anthony Richardson in Indianapolis.
03:04There you have it.
03:05One of them is going to be the starter.
03:06My guess would be Daniel Jones.
03:08Yeah, and I don't...
03:08To start, and then maybe by the time the Niners play him, it'll be different.
03:12But just looking at the receivers, you've got Puka Nakua and Nico Collins, who are Tier
03:182, ranked No. 5 and No. 7 overall.
03:21They're on the schedule.
03:22You've got Mike Evans and Terry McLaurin.
03:25You've got London Neighbors and Thomas Jr.
03:27Those are all Tier 3.
03:29McLaurin's not on the schedule this year.
03:31Oh, my bad.
03:32Yeah, we'll see where he all ends up at Washington.
03:34But anyway, go ahead.
03:35My bad.
03:35No, keep going.
03:37Devontae Adams you're going to face twice.
03:39He's No. 16 overall.
03:41You've got Godwin, DJ Moore, Olave in Tier 4, and then Harrison Jr., Smith and Jigba,
03:48and then Josh Downs at the bottom of the list.
03:50Did you mention Brian Thomas?
03:52Yeah, he's at the bottom of Tier 3, right ahead of Devontae Adams.
03:56Well, and the PFF thing is also based on last year, and I think we should try to take a
04:00moment here and do some projecting, because, for example, Brian Thomas last year with Jacksonville
04:05is a rookie, and he was phenomenal, but I think he's going to be much better this year.
04:12Take Tampa.
04:14Godwin is always dealing with injury, but they've got, and you've got to help me pronounce this,
04:19there's a rookie with Tampa who everybody is buzzing about.
04:24Emeka, Ebuka?
04:27Yeah, that's right.
04:27Okay, I got it.
04:29You worked your way through it.
04:29I did.
04:30Ohio State wide receiver.
04:31Anyway, he's phenomenal, supposedly.
04:34Having a really good camp.
04:35We'll believe it when we see it, but they're excited about him.
04:38You can't guard all these guys, Demo, so Tampa's got a core.
04:41You mentioned Puka and Devontae Adams.
04:43Can't guard them both.
04:45You're going to have to pick one of those guys.
04:46Jackson Smith and Jigba.
04:48You'll face Marvin Harrison Jr. twice.
04:51Drake London in Atlanta is on your schedule.
04:53Malik Neighbors, Nico Collins.
04:56Even go to Carolina.
04:58There's a lot of buzz about Tett McMillan there.
05:01You know, we go to Cleveland.
05:02I don't even know who the quarterback is.
05:04I don't even really know who's going to step forward as their, you know, top receiver.
05:08Jerry Judy was good last year.
05:10What have you?
05:11Calvin Ridley in Tennessee.
05:13Chicago's receiving core is interesting.
05:15The bottom line is this.
05:18His assignment is probably harder than the 49ers assignment.
05:23Agreed.
05:24Is, I guess, the way I would say it.
05:25Yeah, because the receivers that he will have to go up against, assuming he lines up on their
05:30side or they man match and he follows them across, it's going to be more difficult than,
05:35for example, what the overall defense is going to have to contend with when you look at the
05:41quarterbacks and even if it's Pennix, who is tier four or, you know, Kirk Cousins, who's at the bottom of tier three in Atlanta and all those other teams that are unsettled and replete with tier four guys.
05:55Overall, the defense is not going to face that much of a daunting opposition in quarterback.
06:02There's no Allen, no Jackson, no Burrow, no Mahomes.
06:06So, for your top five or the top four, according to Mike Sando in The Athletic and his quarterback tiers, you're not going to have to worry about him.
06:13Right.
06:14Well, what I really like with Robert Sala, this is the way I'd say it because I think you saw it in the first quarter in the preseason game against Denver.
06:21I'm kind of high on the idea of Sala's defense against a young quarterback.
06:27I think that he's going to really do some things to try to disguise this Niner defense and try to force young quarterbacks into mistakes.
06:35So, even if they're not the greatest quarterbacks, are they young, impressionable quarterbacks?
06:41Week one, Seattle, Sam Darnold.
06:43Eh.
06:43I mean, young-ish, but also been around the block some.
06:47Might he be able to handle it?
06:48New Orleans has three guys who all are just either young or not good.
06:53So, like, that's going to be one where you would figure Sala can feast.
06:57Your division guys, Kyler Murray and Matt Stafford, they've been around the block.
07:01Trevor Lawrence is kind of sort of in between.
07:04And you've got names like Baker Mayfield and potentially Russell Wilson on the schedule.
07:09But maybe you've got Penix and Jackson Dart and you've got Bryce Young and you might have Shadour Sanders and you've got Cam Ward and you might have Anthony Richardson and you've got Caleb Williams.
07:23Yeah.
07:23You have all of those QBs on your schedule.
07:26That's why my rose today was for Robert Sala.
07:30I love that matchup for the Niners.
07:32You might have six or more games against either rookies or second-year players.
07:38If you get into, you know, Penix and you mentioned, you know, Caleb Williams.
07:43Caleb Williams.
07:43And Anthony Richardson would technically be a year three, but he's barely played enough games.
07:48Cam Ward is going to be in his first year.
07:50He's the number one pick in the draft.
07:52We'll see who Cleveland plays.
07:53Bryce Young would be year three also, right?
07:55But Cleveland is probably playing a rookie by then.
07:58That's week 13.
08:00New Orleans is, I mean, do they have anybody who's not a rookie?
08:03Spencer Rattler's not a rookie.
08:05And I guess Hayner's not either, right?
08:06I think he was around last year, but what are we talking about?
08:09Shuck is the guy who, you know, is their draft pick.
08:14And then, yeah, we'll see where the Giants are in the whole Russell Wilson-Jackson dart thing.
08:19But there's another rookie, and that's week nine.
08:22So he could be playing.
08:23And then, by the way, we're making all these guesses, and we don't know who's gotten hurt.
08:28You know what I mean?
08:28Like, there could be injuries that lead to other young guys playing in there.
08:31But I think even in a perfect world, the Niners are probably going to get a third of their schedule
08:37against really, really young, green-type quarterbacks.
08:42And I love Sala in that matchup.
08:44Yeah, and that's why that was my rose with the 49ers.
08:47And if you have a rose and a thorn for the Niners upcoming, 888-957-9570, my rose was the schedule,
08:53not only because of the teams, but what we just talked about and the quarterbacks.
08:58The quarterbacks that you're going to have to face are not world beaters.
09:01They have not been world beaters.
09:03And if you have a young defense, that's going to give you a better opportunity, I think,
09:08to, you know, not get run out of games.
09:10You mentioned this earlier, Green Bay.
09:12You didn't have Brock Purdy.
09:14You went to Lambeau, and you got run out of the building.
09:16You turned right around.
09:17You played Buffalo.
09:18Josh Allen, you got run out of the building.
09:21And so the schedule last year and the quarterbacks you faced, far more difficult than this year.
09:25I love, though, getting back to sort of the launch point, though,
09:29I do think that Diamador Lenore gets to go up against some great receivers.
09:35But then again, some of those receivers, you're only as good as who's throwing the ball to you.
09:41Like, I'm really interested to see Malik neighbors this year.
09:44This is another little, if you want, because I know a lot of people, I'm one of them,
09:48like fantasy drafts are going to kind of maybe start this weekend.
09:51It's a little early still, but some people will do it.
09:54You'll start this weekend.
09:56And this is something to think about.
09:59I certainly do.
10:00You know, everybody's hot on wide receivers early.
10:04Really look at the schedule and then also think about the QB.
10:10And so there are receivers that people are so excited about.
10:15And I look at them and I go, maybe, maybe.
10:19I'd sure like to know what the hell's going on with Matt Stafford before I get excited about Puka and Devontae.
10:26You want to know what the cruelest thing of all time for Devontae Adams would be
10:29is if he ends up playing with Jimmy Garoppolo again.
10:32Jimmy almost drove him crazy.
10:34Oh, that's right.
10:35The receivers, Doc.
10:36Dude, you're one back tweak away from them being back together again.
10:41The receiver, Doc.
10:42He was hucking his helmet all over the sideline because of Garoppolo.
10:46Garoppolo tried to get him killed.
10:48Well, didn't try to, but he almost did.
10:50Right?
10:50So, like, think about that.
10:53Think about that.
10:54Malik neighbors.
10:55Are you with Russell Wilson?
10:58Is that going to go well?
10:59Are you with Jackson Dart, you know, a little bit later on in the season?
11:04Is that going to go well?
11:06You know, I don't know.
11:08I don't know.
11:08So, and New Orleans.
11:10Ooh, Chris Olave.
11:11What about Chris Olave?
11:12Like, I am not.
11:14Like, go ahead and take this.
11:16You guys will know now.
11:16If you're drafting near me when we do our work league, we're not doing Saints this year.
11:22I'm not doing Saints.
11:23What the hell am I doing with Saints?
11:25Who's their punter?
11:27They're not moving the ball.
11:29Oh, we don't draft punters?
11:30Their center just got hurt out for the whole year, too.
11:32They're not moving the ball.
11:34Like, maybe Kamara somewhere on the board.
11:39But I'm not.
11:40I'm not.
11:40Like, I'm drafting offenses.
11:42And I'm not drafting New Orleans Saints.
11:45The Niners should kill that team.
11:47They're not trying to win this year.
11:49But, speaking of their punter, that's what they did on the season.
11:55Tyler's shuck.
11:56Well.
11:56I mean, come on.
11:58What are we doing?
11:59Is Peyton Manning's nephew eligible to come out next year?
12:02Yeah, but is his grandpa already was like, you know, no.
12:07You're not doing it.
12:09Yeah, well, two years from now, the Saints will still suck.
12:11So, he'll still probably be drafted by then.
12:12So, you're saying Archie doesn't want another Manning in New Orleans with fans with bags over their heads?
12:17I don't know if it's about New Orleans.
12:18Who knows who's going to get the No. 1 overall pick in the draft.
12:21But right now, they're suggesting that Archie Manning is not going to play just this year and then go.
12:27He's going to stay.
12:28And that's their business decision.
12:30At least as of now.
12:31Sure.
12:32There's a lot of things that can change between now and January.
12:37And it's not always great to be the No. 1 overall pick in football.
12:41That's true.
12:41Because unless it's a team that just happened to be really, really bad as a one-off for one year,
12:47usually it's a team that is usually always bad with a bad organization, coaching, upheaval, and not a lot of talent.
12:53So, best of luck, Caleb Williams.
12:56And all the best if you land in New Orleans.
12:58That's brutal.
12:59And Caleb Williams now has supposedly, like the bee's knees offensive coaching mind of the last couple of years,
13:05everybody loves Ben Johnson, who was the offensive coordinator in Detroit.
13:09He's now the head coach in Chicago.
13:11Will that unlock him?
13:13Maybe.
13:14Maybe it will.
13:15Maybe it won't.
13:16I don't know.
13:16But you're not wrong.
13:17You know what I mean?
13:18Like, if the Cleveland Browns end up with the No. 1 pick, like ask Baker Mayfield.
13:23I'd be scared.
13:24I would be scared always to be drafted by certain teams if I were a young quarterback.
13:31Cam Ward in Tennessee, probably getting an early crack.
13:34And best of luck, Caleb Williams last year, rough rookie year.
13:38Things look better now.
13:39Bryce Young still searching for it the year before in Carolina.
13:43And then Trevor Lawrence in 2021, early flash, early pop, and now fizzle.
13:49So, if you go back, like Joe Burrow, that worked out well.
13:53I mean, they made it all the way to the Super Bowl, and they got talent around them and a great head coach.
13:57So, that might be the model for Caleb Williams.
13:59So, we're sitting here also, though, talking about D'Amador Lenore and his comments on Richard Sherman's podcast,
14:04that he's going to be the best corner in the league this year.
14:07Okay, bravado, great.
14:08I get it.
14:09This is the way a lot of people in professional sports talk.
14:12No problems with that.
14:14But flashback to something Guru asked us in the middle of the crossover where he's not feeling good right now about 49er injuries.
14:21And I'm like, yeah, well, of course.
14:23Everyone's not feeling good about it.
14:24But, my question, because he was kind of like, are you worried about the injuries?
14:29And my response was, I'm never not worried about injuries when you're following an NFL season.
14:35You're always one play away from your season being over.
14:39Always.
14:40Like, and you just have to sort of, like, deal with that.
14:43The Chiefs are one lineman falling on Patrick's leg away from the season being over.
14:50And that's largely the case.
14:52I know there are exceptions.
14:53Nick Foles, Brock Purdy, we can play these games.
14:56Jeff Hostetler.
14:57But it's very, very rare that stuff like that happens.
15:00So, I always worry about it.
15:03And Lenore is a great example of another player who I almost view not quite quarterback level.
15:09But what do the Niners do if that guy is at some point not available this year?
15:15What do they do at the cornerback position?
15:19I'm sure there's Renardo Green.
15:21They're apparently digging Upton Stout, who has not played in the NFL as of yet.
15:26There are other players that you can turn and burn in depth there and whatnot.
15:30But, oof, that's one guy that's on my A-list for the Niners this year of please, please don't get hurt long-term.
15:42Diamino Lenore.
15:42No doubt.
15:43And, you know, we had him on our show when we were down at Laughing Monk.
15:47He called in and he reminded us that he's never given up a touchdown in the NFL so far in his young career.
15:53He's got a clean record as far as I can remember the interview and him saying that.
15:58They should have me circling.
15:59Yeah, and Upton Stout, for me, physically projects as a natural nickel slot corner.
16:07I don't know if he would even be big enough to go to the outside.
16:10So, yeah.
16:11Also, never giving up a touchdown in the NFL.
16:13That is true.
16:14But you do look deeper.
16:16And, you know, Trey Brown out of Seattle is, he's kind of just a guy.
16:20Maybe he could step up and fill it in.
16:22But, ultimately, all of this is so reliant on the defensive front pressuring quarterbacks anyway
16:27that I'm with you about Diamino Lenore.
16:30I think you could survive it if the pass rush is nasty.
16:34It becomes something you can mitigate a little bit better.
16:36Yeah, absolutely.
16:37And then the other side to it, and I wanted to get this in there, too,
16:40because earlier we were talking about the AFC West.
16:42I think it's got the potential to be the best division in football.
16:45And then there's the NFC West.
16:48And so, Bucky Brooks, NFL Network, I thought kind of the ultimate moment of our conversation
16:54with him yesterday was on the way out the door.
16:57And I asked him, like, who do you pick to win the NFC West?
17:02And it wasn't what he said.
17:04It was how he said it that kind of grabbed our attention.
17:07Take a listen.
17:08Bucky, you're putting your chip in whose circle to win the NFC West?
17:13Oh, the Rams.
17:15I mean, the Rams are the best team in the division.
17:18Okay, yeah, not, oh, oh, the Rams.
17:22Okay.
17:22Couldn't you have just said the Rams?
17:24The Rams.
17:25I'm picking the Rams.
17:26He goes, oh.
17:27Are you really asking me that?
17:28The Rams.
17:29I told you earlier that's a great question.
17:31That's a stupid question.
17:32Yeah, like I was a dumb-dumb or something over here for even asking the question.
17:38Yeah.
17:38And then, what we didn't know in that moment with Bucky is that earlier in the day,
17:45after announcing that Matt Stafford was finally going to return to practice, he didn't.
17:51And excuse me if I don't want to grab a Sharpie and write it down in ink just because Stiney
17:57spoke to someone in L.A. who apparently thinks Matt's fine.
18:01I think Matt Stafford's August sounds a lot like Christian McCaffrey's last August,
18:05and so I don't know.
18:08And this is an absolute burner of an issue for the San Francisco 49ers.
18:14Do you know what it would mean?
18:17Jimmy, Jimmy, Jimmy.
18:19Well, there's that.
18:21But if Matt Stafford is in some way weakened or unavailable for a large part of this year,
18:27dude, you have no reason or excuse to not win this division.
18:33None.
18:34That depends on how many games he misses and whether or not Jimmy Garoppolo is still upright
18:40and able to hand the ball off to a guy who I think is going to have a very good year in Kyron Williams.
18:44Yeah, he's good.
18:45He's very good.
18:46He's good, and their defense is nasty.
18:47So there are, and I hate the expression, there are many ways to skin a cat.
18:52I've never done it.
18:53I'd imagine there's really only one way to do it.
18:55Yeah, I'd vote against doing it.
18:56I definitely would.
18:57I love cats.
18:58And in this case, if you have a great defense and a run game that could be excellent,
19:05you could survive having Jimmy Garoppolo as your quarterback.
19:09He may not thrive, but you could survive it.
