00:42as a result of the Israeli government's hunger campaign.
00:52Hello and welcome to From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:57We begin with the news.
01:11Venezuelan authorities denounced before the National Assembly the terrorist plans against the government
01:16and people plotted by the far-right opposition with the support of the US.
01:20This way, the Minister of Interior, Justice and Peace of Venezuela, Diosdado Cabello, unveiled that since August 2024,
01:27the nation has faced at least 20 terrorist attacks sponsored by the extreme right backed by Washington.
01:34Cabello assured the attacks increase after the success of the electoral process of July of last year,
01:40where the Venezuelan people guaranteed the re-election of President Nicolás Maduro.
01:45In this context, Cabello condemned the extreme right has crossed the limits of what is politically permissible
01:51by organizations that have an interest in taking power in Venezuela.
01:55The President gave us a very clear instruction to work, work for peace, for peace, for the peace, not only of Chavistas,
02:13but of all Venezuelans, and that is what we have been doing since we took office in August.
02:28We have faced at least 20 cases of violence, 20 cases, from the acts of terrorism in July and August,
02:44to the latest operation now against the terrorists who want to use explosives against our people.
02:50Venezuela and Foreign Minister Ivan Hill met with the diplomatic corps accredited in the country
02:58in order to put into proper perspective the latest U.S. threats against Venezuela.
03:03The top diplomat emphasized that since March 2015, the Venezuelan state has been the victim of all forms of attacks,
03:09which began with former President Obama's executive order, declaring Venezuela an unusual and extraordinary threat.
03:17Heal added that in the last 10 years, Venezuela has experienced inhumane attacks against the sovereignty,
03:24sabotage of the oil industry, attacks on the production of goods and services,
03:28on the national currency, and all forms of economic assault.
03:32The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela issued an official statement regarding the operations of the one Guiana vessel
03:47on a maritime area pending the limitation.
03:50In the communication, the Venezuelan government unveiled that a note very well was delivered to the government of Guiana,
03:57expressing a strongest protest against the start of the operations of vessel I Guiana in the Stabrock block
04:05by the transnational corporation ExxonMobil in association with the Guyanese authorities.
04:10The statement stresses that these operations are being carried out in a maritime area pending the limitation,
04:16which makes them illegal under international law, as they violate the principle of refraining from acts that alter the status quo.
04:25Furthermore, Venezuela warns ExxonMobil and any other company that intends to participate in exploration
04:32or exploitation activities in those waters that such actions may have political and legal consequences.
04:39The communique follows by underscoring Venezuela reserves the right to exercise all its rights,
04:44making use of all the resources and capabilities granted to it by international law to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
04:53In its closing remarks, Venezuela reiterates its call on the government of Guiana to immediately cease these operations
05:00and resume direct dialogue in order to preserve peace and stability throughout the Caribbean region.
05:11Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro expresses gratitude for the support received from sovereign peoples around the world.
05:18The Venezuelan President expresses gratitude for the mobilization of the military and popular forces
05:23and for the support of society in general in defense of peace and sovereignty at this crucial time for the country.
05:31Furthermore, the head of state denounced the United States' attempts to impose violent hegemony on the world's emerging economies.
05:38The Cuban chapter of the Anti-Fascist International categorically rejects the latest U.S. actions against the sovereign nation of Venezuela.
05:53In a statement, the organization categorically and firmly rejects the decision of the U.S. government,
05:59announced by its Attorney General on August 7th to offer a $50 million reward for information leading to the arrest of the legitimate
06:08and constitutional President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Comrade Nicolás Maduro Moros.
06:14It adds that the new measure against President Maduro is mafia-like in nature and together with others aimed at defeating the Bolivarian revolution,
06:23confirms once again what Che Guevara said in 1964,
06:28you can't trust imperialism one bit, not at all.
06:32Furthermore, the Cuban chapter fully supports the right of the Bolivarian people to defend by all means at their disposal
06:39the social and humanist work they have created and to perfect it in a sovereign manner and without interference of any kind.
06:54The body of Colombian presidential hopeful and Senador Miguel Uribe Turbay lies in state at the Eleptical Hall of the Colombian Congress in Bogota.
07:03After being shot three times at a campaign rally on June 7th, 2025, Uribe underwent multiple surgeries
07:10but succumbed to a fatal brain hemorrhage on August 11th, 2025.
07:15Following his death, his body was transferred from the hospital and forensic services to the Congress
07:21where it will remain in a public viewing chamber through the night
07:25with an open opportunity for the public and lawmakers to pay respects before his funeral scheduled for August 13th.
07:32His wife, family members and fellow politicians gathered at Congress to honour his memory during this solemn tribute.
07:47The 14-year-old accused of Uribe Turbay's murder, which accepted the charges during a private hearing on August 5th,
07:54will be sentenced on August 27th by a judge specialising in children and adolescents.
08:01The prosecutor's office will request that the charge be changed from attempted murder to actual murder,
08:07which could lead to a sentence of up to eight years in a centre for young offenders.
08:12The crime perpetrated at a campaign event in June has sparked political and social shock in Colombia.
08:25The Colombian Attorney General's Office requested the Bogota Superior Court
08:29to overturn the 12-year house arrest sentence against former President Álvaro Uribe,
08:34alleging missteps in the assessment of evidence.
08:37The Attorney General's Office maintains that it is not proven that Uribe ordered lawyer Diego Cadena
08:43to offer incentives to prisoners in 2018 to clear him of the creation of a paramilitary group.
08:50In addition, it questions the validity of the telephone recording's use of evidence.
08:55The case, considered one of the most important in the judicial history of the country,
09:00will now be reviewed by three judges from the Criminal Chamber,
09:04who must decide whether to confirm, modify or overturn the sentence.
09:14And now we have a short break coming up,
09:16but first remember you can join us on TikTok at Tala Sur English,
09:19where you'll find news in different formats, news updates and more.
09:22We'll be right back, start with us.
09:34Welcome back to From the South.
09:36China and Brazil reaffirmed their willingness to set an example of unity and self-reliance
09:41among countries in the Global South.
09:43Chinese President Xi Jinping urged countries in the Global South
09:47to jointly safeguard international equity and justice
09:51and to protect the legitimate rights and interests of developing countries.
09:55During a phone call, Brazilian President Lula da Silva and his counterpart, President Xi,
10:00declared that they would jointly build a more just and sustainable planet.
10:04The Brazilian President affirmed his willingness to strengthen communication and coordination with China
10:10under multilateral mechanisms, such as the BRICS, opposing Washington's unilateral aggressive actions.
10:15In Chile, workers of the public transport system denounced bad conditions and miserable wages,
10:28and threatening a strike that could paralyze part of the public transport system in Santiago de Chile this week
10:35if no agreement is reached with the RBU company. Let's see.
10:40It's four o'clock in the morning. A hard day begins. And it is not one, it will be two, because the salary is simply not enough.
10:51To earn money, it's 16 hours a day working. Many workers do 12 hours, and then go to another job, and continue doing hours.
11:00There are workers who come in at 4 o'clock or 5 o'clock a.m., and work until 2 o'clock or 3 o'clock in the afternoon.
11:06They eat quickly, go to other company and work until 11 p.m. Do you think we will be able to provide a good service that way?
11:13Difficult and not only for them, but also for the thousands of users of public transportation, which in the country, of course, is also private.
11:25Here they get their money from the state. That's why we workers and passengers don't have to fight.
11:31We are passengers, too. We also take the bus. So, excuse me, but we also do all this to provide a good service.
11:38They are the workers of the Elias Lafford Union, which brings together urban bus workers from the RBU Santiago Company's mobility network, with close to 4,000 workers.
11:51Like this one, different companies win state tenders, and although they are different, they say, the conditions of the workers are all similar.
12:04The Ministry of Transportation endorsed that the company pays us unworthy salaries, that we have unworthy conditions, where workers have died en route.
12:12The days are exhausting, only 30 minutes for lunch, and as long as the trip has reached one of the terminals, where there is not always a bathroom.
12:23Most of the drivers end up getting sick. They have to walk around with a wimple, with a change of clothes they have improved with the little handkerchief that the women put on. Of course there are illnesses.
12:38If the strike goes ahead, eight districts of the Chilean capital will see transportation paralyzed on routes that connect Santiago from one end to the other, such as Parajul, near the airport, with Vitacura, in the eastern zone.
12:53Voting for the strike means that we have five more days to negotiate with the company, and we want to take advantage of those five days too. We want the company to make an offer that it has to make, which is obligatory, so let's not be afraid and let's vote for the strike.
13:08But the call has not been easy. To the poor conditions, they accuse persecution. The company agreed to negotiate before the possible strike, which the union will vote on electronically, exercising a valid right, they insist.
13:23Today the company has us with minimum wages, with unworthy wages. That is why we are fighting for fair wages, for fair conditions, for working hours in which we can share with our family.
13:37Today the company is denying that right.
13:40Today the company is denying that right.
13:43A bidding and business model that has been debated for decades in Chile. Can transportation be called public when it is actually private?
13:51In reality, it's private. Carolina Sandoval and Paola Dragnik, Telesur, Chile.
13:58In Argentina, the Governor of the Province of Buenos Aires, Axel Kicillof, announced on Monday the launching of the Completar Plan, which is to resume the construction of thousands of houses halted by the government of President Javier Milley.
14:12Let's recall that since the change of national management, the building of more than 16,000 homes remains paralysed, leaving them exposed to abandonment, many of them with significant construction progress.
14:25A scenario that has been criticised by the Minister of Habitat of Buenos Aires, Silvina Batakis, who pointed out that in the middle of an ongoing housing crisis, it is cruel to forget these projects.
14:37The announcement comes amid controversy over the fate of some developments of the government programme, PROCREAR, and the delivery of housing to police officials by the Minister of Security, Patricia Burrich.
14:49In China, the Shanghai Museum's gates are open for 168 hours straight from August 11th to 17th during the final week of its launch.
15:18In the final week of its largest exhibition titled On Top of the Pyramid, The Civilisation of Ancient Egypt, hailed as the largest exhibition of ancient Egyptian artefacts ever held outside its home country.
15:31It represents a pioneering collaboration between an official Chinese museum and the Egyptian government, with nearly 95% of the 780 artefacts on display, making the debut in Asia.
15:45The installation has received almost 2.6 million visitors, with organisers deciding to keep the gates open for a full week to give more people a final chance to visit.

16:28Asylum to Palestinian zurückers
16:31Welcome back to From the South.
16:31On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Shaman expressed her support for the proposal to grant asylum to Palestinian children orphaned by the genocide in Gaza.
16:46On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Shaman expressed her support for the proposal to grant asylum to Palestinian children orphaned by the genocide in Gaza.
16:56Gaza. The president described the initiative as positive and recalled that Mexico has maintained
17:01throughout its history an open-door policy for those seeking refuge. To assess the viability
17:08of this measure, she instructed the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Isela Rodriguez, and the
17:13Secretary of Foreign Affairs to review all the legal, logistical, and humanitarian aspects that
17:18would be involved in receiving and caring for these children.
17:26Iranian President Masol Pejewskiyan warned Caucasus countries about the risk of the United States
17:42using the new transport corridor in the region as a tool to impose its hegemonic interest
17:47under the guise of promoting peace or boosting the economy. In a telephone conversation with
17:52Armenian Prime Minister Nicole Pashinjan, the Iranian leader emphasized that the project
17:58must guarantee Armenia's sovereignty and exclude any foreign military presence. Pejewskiyan
18:05reiterated that Iran, as a harbor of peace and stability, supports any genuine agreement
18:11that promotes cooperation among regional countries but opposes any money over that alters borders
18:16or serfs to isolate Iran and Russia in a context marked by the recent peace agreement between
18:22Armenia and Azerbaiyán, conciliated by Washington.
18:25In Peru, outrage grows following journalist and migrant Ricardo Quintana's case currently
18:39detained in the Alligator Alcatraz prison in Florida. On the Cuarto Poder program Quintana
18:45reported that he lives in inhumane conditions, crowding with dozens of people, fed frozen food,
18:52and subjected to long hours, handcuffed and chained to the floor. The journalist who arrived in the
18:58United States in 2021 seeking political asylum claims that he never committed any crimes and
19:04that his only offense was selling Ceviche without a permit. His testimony has sparked an intense debate
19:11about the mistreatment of migrants in the United States.
19:20In the United States, National Guard troops have arrived at their headquarters in Washington, D.C.,
19:26the capital, after President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he was placed in the city's police
19:31department under direct federal control. Trump took command of the police department and deployed the
19:38national guard invoking laws and constitutional powers that grant the federal government greater
19:43influence over the nation's capital than over other cities. Washington D.C.'s major Muriel
19:50Bowser has pledged to collaborate with the federal government as national guard troops arrive.
19:56However, other democratic majors across the country have taken a different stance,
20:01questioning Trump against extending his grip on law and order to other major cities.
20:06In Haiti, the health situation in the regions of Port-au-Prince and Leogaine has reached a critical
20:20point affecting thousands of people seeking refuge from ambulance. A recent study by Haiti's medical
20:26organization and the Final Point movement revealed that 98% of residents suffer from scabies and 85% of
20:34children between the ages of one and six suffer from dysentery, a form of intestinal infection due to
20:41polluted waters. In addition, 80% of these children are affected by malnutrition. The health crisis is also
20:47worsening with cholera. The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs and the World Health Organization
20:54detected 34 new cases in recent weeks. The situation underlines the urgent need for clean water and sanitation.
21:02for thousands of families surviving in precarious conditions.
21:24In Mexico, the Secretariat for Integrated Risk Management and Civil Protection issued a double alert following
21:30steady rainfall in the capital city over the past 72 hours. Mexico City faces an unprecedented crisis
21:38due to heavy rains that have broken historical records. The storm has triggered flooding in several
21:44streets and avenues leading to the collapse of public and vehicle transportation. Likewise, operations at the
21:50city's international airport have been halted, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. Weather authorities
21:56registered 84.5 millimeters of accumulated rain overcoming the 1952 record of 67 millimeters and the local
22:06government's water management secretary, Jose Mario Esparza warned that the city is but halfway into the rainy season.
