04:15He wants to get that podium, overall podium.
04:18I like today for RJ for some reason.
04:20His track's going to be super tough.
04:22He's got Cody Sharp right in front of him.
04:24So if he can get up there, get a gap with Chase going down and Jett in the back,
04:28he might have an opportunity.
04:31Ferrandis was scheduled to come back from injury at Unadilla next week,
04:36but he said he rode for four weeks and felt so good.
04:38He said, let's get started early.
04:39Okay, bottom box is Lawrence.
04:41He's got the orange numbers on the red gear battling.

04:55Well, we've been joking around about Honda HRC manager Lawrence,
04:59which I'm having a button because their starts are so good that he's manually doing it.
05:02He may need a horn because look at the traffic that is around him to try to just alert him
05:07that the points leader is coming through.
05:09This is not what he needs because he's simply not going to be able to turn in quick lap time
05:13to the likes of Sexton, especially Eli Tomac.
05:17We're going to build a very big lead very, very quickly here.
05:20I feel like the button theory has been disproved with help from you, JT.
05:25Yeah, the rider has got to do the work.
05:26And unfortunately, JT flinched on the gate.
05:28And he's got a lot of work to do now.
05:30Yeah, you know, you can blame Steve Matzis for that.
05:32He jumped on the bike.
05:33Now look at him.
05:34He's all the way back.
05:35Yep, the streak's over.
05:36Yeah, but normally, you know, when you've got a guy like JT this far back,
05:40the gap between him and Eli is a lot bigger than what it is.
05:44It's still pretty close.
05:45So, you know, he's only 10 seconds at the moment, 10, 12 seconds out of third place
05:50with Justin Cooper.
05:51So it's not too far behind.
05:52He didn't lose too much time.
05:54But it's going to be a long race for him.
05:56Got Hemshire in that top box battling it out with shock.

06:03Cooper is all alone in third.
06:05And Tomac has about a two-second lead on Hunter Lawrence.
06:07So this is a great opportunity for those two.

06:26And what's tricky about this section, it continuously turns.

06:32So they're trying to pick up the pace, but they've got to continue to turn.

06:54Brody Connelly just raced the 250 class today.
06:58He's the 250 champ in Australia.
07:00Lawrence on the move.
07:03Shock battling it out with Hampshire there for fourth, Katie.
07:07Yeah, and he's not entirely comfortable on the bike.
07:10The number 37 of Cody's shock is dealing with a left ankle issue from Washougal.
07:14So he did have a lot of work done on that in terms of just rest, relaxation, make sure it's working properly here at Ironman.
07:22He said he was a little bit concerned, though, on a track like this.
07:24There's going to be a lot of work with that right leg.
07:26That foot's going to be dragging a bit.
07:28It's going to be a physical game as well as a mental game.
07:30I asked him, I said, hey, look, does an injury like this kind of nag you in a race mode?
07:34He said, yeah.
07:34He said, so not only physically am I thinking about it, but mentally I have to make sure I don't overdo it so I hurt myself more.
07:40Yeah, but sometimes when you're in that position, you find some good lines.
07:44And I'm looking at Cody.
07:46He has a really good line in that wood section, so he might not be charging super hard down in certain sections like going up this phase.
07:52But he's got these lines figured out.
07:54Probably a lot of that because of his injury, got to be patient.
07:57Now he's got the number one coming up behind him as RJ continues to work on him.
08:02Yeah, I just saw Sexton make the move on Prado on the inside, headed toward the finish.
08:06That was a critical pass because now he has bridged the gap to the shock Hampshire battle.
08:12And then Lawrence is lurking not too far back.
08:15You've got Prado, Ferrandez, and then Jet.
08:18So you might see Sexton and Jet moving together.
08:21It looks like RJ has made the pass now.
08:23Yeah, but any kind of injury, that's the place that Cody's probably going to be a little bit more patient at, not really trying to charge it in there.
08:29But here, the last lap, he had a really good line.
08:32Let's see if he can close back, maybe even get around RJ to the next section, if he can be able to run the same line.
08:37Oh, it's working.
08:38It's alongside.
08:40He's got to deal with Sexton now.
08:44And Sexton makes the pass.
08:45Yeah, Cody let him have that.
08:47So, like that line by Chase, he probably saw Cody do it the lap before.
08:52And the very back of the shot, you see Jet Lawrence back there.
08:58Yeah, they're on the same straightaway.
09:00So, Jet, as bad as that start is, I think Chase going down helped that.
09:04Chase is going to be bummed because I think he should be up there with these guys.
09:07But nonetheless, Jet's still only 18 seconds behind Eli.
09:10And again, how far he was back.
09:12That gap's been the same since about the second lap.
09:15Hunter taking the fight to Eli's home back now, up front.
09:19Well, I see Hunter Lawrence, and, you know, we go back to Washougal, and he simply just didn't look like himself.
09:27And there were a lot of questions asked.
09:28You know, Chase Sexton gets the win.
09:30Hunter was a little off his game as we see him make a mistake there.
09:33But I really think we have to kind of chalk that up to Washougal and the nuances of these particular racetracks.
09:38That's a racetrack that we heard Jet Lawrence himself say, hey, this just isn't my track.
09:41And I think Hunter would echo those sentiments.
09:44He really hasn't ever shined there.
09:46It's a track that, if you're not comfortable, does not reward taking a lot of risks.
09:50So I think they took what was available and are coming back with a vengeance here in Ironman.
09:54As Hunter looks like, you might want to challenge for this league right here.
09:57Yeah, I agree with you, JT.
09:59And a lot of people thought the same thing coming into this track because he hasn't, you know, performed the best here.
10:03But the way this layout is and these soils, we saw him almost make that mistake as you were talking.
10:09Make this track just as Jet.
10:10It's going to play into the hand of these guys like a Hunter Lawrence.
10:15Really patient.

10:17Talking with Johnny O'Mara, what makes Hunter Lawrence so great?
10:20He said he's a diesel.
10:22That's kind of the nickname around here for him.
10:23He always shows up.
10:25He never gives up.
10:26I also asked Lars Lindstrom, team manager over there at Honda, why?
10:30Why is he so consistent?
10:32And he said, well, having someone like Jet at that level train with him at all times helps with his consistency.
10:38The testing they do helps with Hunter Lawrence's consistency.
10:42And he's a guy that knows how to adjust on the bike while on a track.
10:46And for all those reasons, that's why a guy like Hunter Lawrence is so consistent with all of his top fives.
10:51Yeah, Katie, he's finished in the top five every single 450 motocross race he's been in.
10:57It's his second full season.
11:00Yeah, even the badge for him are usually horse.
11:03That's about it.
11:04Yeah, I mean, and when you look at Hunter Lawrence, Chase Exton got on a roll last year.
11:08Otherwise, he would have been your champion.
11:10This year, his brother, he would be leading his point.
11:12So he's riding good, JT.
11:15He certainly is.
11:16And you see Jet on the bottom screen continuing to work forward.
11:18But, you know, I think on to what Katie said there, you know, Hunter's a guy he always talks about process first.
11:25The result will come later.
11:26I'm not even focused on the result.
11:28I only care about the process.
11:30And if that's in place, the rest will take care of itself.
11:33And you just have to do that.
11:34You have to believe that if I do the right things and I put one foot in front of the other,
11:38that I will get to where I need to be.
11:40And I haven't seen many racers ever that are as methodical in the way they go about things as Hunter Lawrence.
11:46Well, you'll learn a lot when you were hurt as much as he was earlier in his career.
11:50And he said, maybe I wanted it too bad back then.
11:52And he took several years of that to get to this level to where now he is challenging one of the best.
11:58Eli Tomek and going for the lead.
12:00That's a perfect scenario on how this track is playing out.
12:03That was just a better line from Hunter.
12:04Hunter didn't do anything different as Jet Lawrence.
12:07Now he hits this big jump, gets around Jorge Prada for sixth place.
12:12He was your fastest rider on the track with a 2.05 in the last lap.
12:15Hunter Lawrence was second.
12:16But again, that was just a line selection.
12:18Hunter didn't charge any harder.
12:20Eli's going to have to go to work like we saw Hayden Deegan and regroup because Hunter has better lines at the moment.
12:25Jet and Hunter literally make passes at the exact same time.
12:30They're always in sync.
12:31They're always in sync.
12:32So that's the lead now for the 96.
12:35Hunter trying to put this one away and started to pull out from Tomek.
12:40As for Jet, there's going to be a significant obstacle in his run to the front.
12:44And that is Sexton who would be the next one in front of him.
12:47But it's five seconds ahead.
12:50Yeah, these guys are going to have to worry.
12:51I mean, Hunter Lawrence knows if you're going to get Eli, Eli's always going to be strong.
12:55But if you can get that gap on him, make him start thinking behind, thinking about his teammate,
13:00thinking about Chase Sexton and Jet Lawrence coming up,
13:02not worried about me.
13:03Hunter might have an opportunity to get away.
13:05You go back a couple of races, he did the same thing at Millville, that first moto,
13:09winning it in the same fashion.
13:11So Hunter has that experience, and so far he looks really good.
13:15Yeah, only one moto win this year for Hunter, and that was that race at Millville.
13:20That might have been his best of the year.
13:21Then Washougal, like we said, that's not his track.
13:23He's back in a big way today.
13:26As for Jet, still five seconds down on Sexton,
13:29as Sexton tries to go after Hampshire.
13:33Yeah, that section is getting really slippery.
13:35But I do believe because Jet got a bad start as we're watching RJ close in on Justin Cooper
13:40for third place, Jet probably has the best advantage of all these guys
13:43because he had to figure out a way to pass all of them,
13:46all the riders before he got to them.
13:48So he probably has his track figured out more than the rest of these guys,
13:51and so far it's turning into fast lap times.
13:53Oh, he's about to challenge Sexton now.
13:57He's closed the gap and has him in his sights.
14:02Now normally when you're in his position, Jet probably took a lot of risk trying to catch up to these guys.
14:07Now he'll probably settle back, calm down.
14:09I'm sure in the back of his mind he doesn't probably believe he's going to get his brother out front.
14:13That's a pretty big gap.
14:14But now you've got Chase Sexton in front of you.
14:17Just start working on those lap times might slow down a little bit.
14:20And as I say that, he goes faster, 204.

14:31But third place is right in front of him, so everything's right in front of him.
14:35The main thing is to try to stack those points, but maybe have an opportunity to get the next overall, the second moto, JT.
14:41Yeah, and you see Jet turning in at 204, and his best friend right now is going to be Justin Cooper.
14:46Justin Cooper did a 208 that last lap, which is going to slow up our J. Hampshire,
14:51which is going to slow up Chase Sexton and allow Jet Lawrence to make this a four-way battle for third very, very soon.
14:57So we don't know necessarily to get up to second, but I think he's going to be in a fight for third within the next lap or two.
15:03Yeah, that was the fastest lap of the race that Jet just put in James.
15:08Yeah, and depending on what Hunter Lawrence does out front, he might have an opportunity to get second
15:13because Eli's going to eventually stop chasing Hunter.
15:16He's going to start worrying behind him, and that would be a good thing for Jet Lawrence.
15:19So brothers working in sync again.
15:24They are, and we know they've got the whole squad behind them, Katie.
15:27Yeah, that's right.
15:28And, you know, one of the things we've talked about here, guys, this weekend is what these riders are battling
15:32on the track with the elements and the condition of the weather.
15:35I talked to Johnny O'Meara about how challenging this is for these riders,
15:39and I wanted to understand as a normal human here what kind of athleticism these riders need to have.
15:46Well, he told me that Jet Lawrence will maintain about 190 heartbeats per minute in a race like this, right?
15:53So mid-moto, he's running at 190.
15:55He said he's generally about 7 to 8 feet per minute higher than Hunter is at any given time.
16:00That doesn't indicate he's more physically fit than Hunter or not,
16:03but it just shows just how demanding this sport is to maintain 190 feet per minute throughout a moto
16:10and also at the same time not pushing it harder.
16:14Stu, you might be able to speak to this or JT about how going into the red zone is not beneficial for these athletes, right?
16:20So they need to push it, they need a high heart rate, they need to be on it, but not overdoing it
16:25because then they could tire themselves out too much.
16:29Yeah, and just to expand on that more, I think it's more about when I was training,
16:33it was about being able to recover, you know, so you're in that red zone.
16:37You're going to get there, especially if you're chasing these guys down,
16:39but then being able to take a half a lap off, you know, a quarter lap off,
16:43to be able to bring that heart rate back down, to recover, to be able to push,
16:46that's where the real champions and the guys that are in shape, it's not about just going wide open,
16:51it's about being able to recover, and so far, you know, they've got it figured out, JT.
16:55They do, and you know, the science comes into play there, right?
16:57So they know that Jett's running a higher heart rate, but, you know,
17:00talking to Johnny O'Mara about this, and he said, you know, Jett can handle a higher workload,
17:04like they really have to be careful.
17:06You see RJ make a huge mistake there, but they have to manage Hunter's workload more than they do Jett,
17:11and that's just through blood tests and understanding what Hunter can handle versus what, you know,
17:16and what they respond to better.
17:17So knowing your athlete, knowing what's going to let them be their best self on Saturday is key,
17:23because if you don't show up at 100% on Saturday, you're simply not doing it right.
17:28Well, there's a lot on the line at this point.
17:30They've got to be 100% now.
17:32Hampshire is third, but Sexton is right there, and Jett Lawrence is right behind him.
17:37This might be the most pivotal part of this moto.
17:39Yeah, and you just saw Eli Tomek going down.
17:42You can start to see these guys another couple laps.
17:44They're going to see Eli on the same straightaway, and just as I was thinking what's going to happen,
17:49Eli's going to start rotting behind him because Hunter Lawrence got that gap.
17:53Now you see Jett Lawrence pop in the picture, but to me, once he got behind Chase,
17:57now he seems like he's settling, and as he roostes our drone at the moment.
18:01Wow.
18:03What a shot.
18:05Oh, it's getting close now.
18:07Yeah, Chase better watch out, because he's going to be focused on RJ,
18:10and I believe Jett has some pretty good lines.
18:12He might have a sneak attack from Jett Lawrence.
18:15I want to just beat the number one for sure.
18:17We know how good he is.
18:18Yeah, it's Hunter Lawrence's motor to lose, but I mentioned how pivotal it is.
18:22It's because of how badly these two want to beat each other,
18:25and Hampshire, he wants to measure himself.
18:27It's his first year in the 450 class.
18:29What can he do in a battle?
18:30We haven't seen many good starts from him, and so far, he's holding his own halfway through this first 450 motor and Ironman.

18:41Again, kudos to RJ hanging in there, but here comes Sexton.
18:43Yeah, and look who's right in front of him.
18:45Once we go to the next camera shot, he called it.

18:48Sexton makes the move on Hefshire.

18:51And they now have Tomac in sight.

18:56I believe now you're going to watch Jett Lawrence get aggressive.
18:59He's going to close in on RJ.
19:01It'll be more a sense of urgency to try to get around him, not let that number one get away.
19:06But the last thing you want to do is let Jay Sexton get around number three as well.
19:10This is that critical juncture.
19:11Look at how big the gap is between Sexton and Lawrence now compared to one lap ago.
19:16So Jett has to go to work on his old 250-class rival, Hampshire.
19:23Cannot say enough good, though, about the rookie campaign for Hampshire here in Pro Motocross.
19:28Every week, better, better, better.
19:30Yeah, he's riding really good.
19:32I mean, this track is really difficult, really hard to push on these guys.
19:35And you see them when they start picking up the pace, easy mistakes.
19:38And a lot of it comes from when they land off the jump.
19:40They miss it by a few feet.
19:41It's really sticky.
19:42So you'll see these guys hit.
19:44The bike, the body moves forward.
19:45But now you can see Jett Lawrence starting to close in and try to get RJ this next lap.
19:54Is there an opening here?
19:56Oh, he's going to follow.
19:58Yeah, he's probably staying close to him, maybe having the next opportunity,
20:01unless RJ makes a mistake right here.
20:03Next opportunity is going to be right before the finish line.

20:20Yeah, RJ got through that section pretty good as Chase got around Eli, I believe.

20:31It has come unraveled for Tomek after the whole shot.
20:35And you hear the mechanics yelling.
20:37He drops on the inside of Rudd.
20:40He should have RJ right there.
20:41There he goes.
20:43Got him.
20:45Now he knows that Chase has got around Eli.
20:47He's going to do the same thing.
20:49He's got to follow the number one up front.
20:52And here's the difference, though.
20:54It's about a three-second gap between Lawrence and Sexton now.
20:57And Lawrence has to try to get Tomek.
20:59Not sure what has happened to Eli.
21:04Yeah, not really sure what happened to Hunter Lawrence on that last lap.
21:07He ran a 2.09.
21:08The guy behind him was 2.05 outside of Eli.
21:11So that gap was 10-plus seconds.
21:15He lost four seconds that lap.
21:17Yeah.
21:18Over four seconds.
21:19Yeah, look at the gap.
21:20Went from 12.5 to 7.9.
21:24And he got bailed out a little bit
21:26because Tomek wasn't the rider on the charge.
21:28But as Sexton or Jed get there, who knows?
21:31Still 10 minutes and two laps to go.
21:34He had a hard part for Hunter.
21:36Maybe it was a lapper.
21:37Maybe he had a tip over.
21:38I don't think he would drop off the pace that quickly
21:41if it was anything else.
21:44So hard part for him.
21:45He doesn't want those guys to be on that same straightaway
21:47because you'll see that gap close really quick
21:49as it's starting to close down now.
21:52Oh, you talk so much about being able to see the guy
21:54and catch that toe.
21:56That's why they have the dogs at the racetrack
21:58for the horses.
21:59They've had to chase something.
22:01Well, that's what Jett Lawrence is doing
22:03with Eli's toe back now.

22:14Yeah, Eli looks like he saw a state trooper

22:17because to me, he's starting to lose that toe
22:20to Chase Sexton.
22:21And Jett was trying to get on him right there,
22:23but he made a quick mistake
22:25and you don't want to get caught behind him
22:26because you see that gap already.
22:28He's losing to Chase.
22:34Oh, I thought Tomek made a mistake.
22:36That's just a really difficult run there on the inside.

22:39The triple of the finish line from Lawrence.

22:45He knows there's an 18 behind him,
22:47but just like RJ,
22:48those guys are missing that corner.
