00:18This week in Pennsylvania, Sunday mornings at 6.30, only on WTAJ.
00:24It's Friday, August 8th, 2025.
00:27This is CBS News Mornings.
00:31Breaking overnight, a new wildfire in Southern California explodes in size.
00:37Thousands under evacuation orders.
00:40Gaza City takeover.
00:42Israel's security cabinet decides to move ahead with plans to take control of the territory's largest city,
00:48despite opposition from military leaders and some families of the hostages.
00:54And troopers ambushed.
00:56A wild scene in rural Pennsylvania.
00:58A gunman kills his neighbor, opens fire on responding officers, then barricades himself on his property.
01:05How it all ended.
01:09Good morning, I'm Michael George.
01:11We start with that breaking news out of Southern California.
01:14A fast-moving wildfire is threatening communities in Ventura and Los Angeles counties, forcing thousands to evacuate.
01:22The so-called Canyon Fire erupted yesterday and was initially estimated to be about 30 acres, but quickly jumped to nearly 5,000 acres.
01:32I feel a little scared because it's honestly happening out of nowhere.
01:36I just woke up and looked out my window and just saw a bunch of smoke coming over my house.
01:42Well, scary, that's for sure.
01:44You know, but I'm going to try to stay as long as I can to protect my home, you know, and my neighbors if I can.
01:51Well, also, we're following breaking news out of the Middle East.
02:06The Israeli Security Cabinet has signed off on plans to take over Gaza City.
02:11That decision stopped short of taking over the entire territory, which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had suggested earlier yesterday.
02:19Netanyahu says the military will continue providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones.
02:26Israel's top general had reportedly warned against occupying Gaza, saying it would endanger the remaining hostages and put more strain on the military.
02:36Ahead of the meeting, Netanyahu said Israel is not interested in maintaining permanent control over Gaza.
02:43Well, we don't want to keep it.
02:45We want to have a security perimeter.
02:47We don't want to govern it.
02:48We don't want to be there as a governing body.
02:51We want to hand it over to Arab forces that will govern it properly without threatening us and giving the Gazans a good life.
03:01That's not possible with Hamas, though.
03:04And the Security Cabinet also adopted five principles for ending the war, including disarming Hamas,
03:10returning all hostages, living and dead, demilitarizing the Gaza Strip,
03:14Israel maintaining security control, and the establishment of a civilian government not controlled by either Hamas or the Palestinian Authority.
03:23President Trump says his push to end the war between Russia and Ukraine is making progress, but it's still not enough.
03:31The president had given Moscow an ultimatum, reach a ceasefire by today or face sanctions.
03:37The White House now says it's ready to move forward on that threat,
03:41even as President Trump signals his willingness to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
03:46CBS's Tina Kraus joins us now from London.
03:48Tina, good morning.
03:50So President Trump's deadline just passed.
03:52There's no ceasefire announced.
03:53So what happens next?
03:55Michael, President Trump has made it clear the ball is in President Putin's court.
04:00And with the buzzer now going off, well, it's clear there will be consequences for countries doing business with Russia.
04:06The White House says it expects to move forward on punishing secondary sanctions for countries that buy Russian oil
04:13after the Kremlin failed to reach a ceasefire deal with Ukraine by President Trump's Friday deadline.
04:19I'm very disappointed, yeah.
04:20Yesterday, President Trump told reporters it's all on Russian President Vladimir Putin.
04:25We're going to see what he has to say.
04:27It's going to be up to him.
04:27Already, the White House announced an additional 25% tariff on India for doing business with Russia.
04:34Still, the President says he's open to meeting with Putin after the Russian leader suggested the two could come face-to-face as soon as next week,
04:41possibly in the Middle East.
04:43They would like to meet with me, and I'll do whatever I can to stop the killing.
04:47Earlier this week, the President's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, held what he called highly productive meetings with Putin in Moscow.
04:54The White House says no details have been finalized for a possible sit-down between the two leaders,
04:59though the President says a meeting would not hinge on Putin meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
05:06Putin says conditions for talks with Zelensky are still far off.
05:11Zelensky cautions that Ukraine and Europe must have a voice in the negotiations.
05:17Putin says he suggested the United Arab Emirates as a potential location for talks with President Trump,
05:23but the White House has not confirmed that.
05:25The sit-down would be the first between U.S. and Russian presidents since Joe Biden met Putin in Geneva.
05:31That was four years ago.
05:33Michael?
05:34All right, Tina Kraus in London.
05:36Well, we're learning new details about the ambush shooting of two Pennsylvania state troopers
05:41and the standoff that ended with the suspect dead.
05:45Police say 61-year-old Carmine Faino used a semi-automatic rifle to shoot and kill a neighbor.
05:51They say he didn't seem to know in the driveway of her home in the northeastern part of the state.
05:56The victim's boyfriend called police.
05:59The responding troopers, Joseph Parashinsky and William Jenkins, were immediately met with a barrage of gunfire.
06:06Police say Faino then barricaded himself in a barn on his property.
06:09We attempted at length to try and negotiate with Mr. Faino, our actor here.
06:18At one point, I will tell you, he was sitting on a propane tank,
06:21which caused further concern that he had attempted to turn that into an improvised explosive device,
06:29and we were concerned about other weapons.
06:32Well, Parashinsky was shot twice in the chest.
06:35Jenkins was also shot twice, once in each arm.
06:38They're both said to be in stable condition.
06:41An EMT was also hurt when his vehicle came under fire, forcing him to veer off the road and crash.
06:48The soldiers who tackled and disarmed a sergeant accused of opening fire at Fort Stewart
06:53are being praised for their heroism.
06:55The Secretary of the Army paid them a visit yesterday.
06:58CBS's Skylar Henry has the latest developments.
07:02Cornelius Radford was led in shackles to a Liberty County jail cell.
07:05Military investigators say Radford, a 28-year-old automatic logistics sergeant from Jacksonville, Florida,
07:11carried a personal handgun onto the Army base yesterday morning and shot five co-workers.
07:16They're also causing one shooter is in custody.
07:20Other soldiers who were unarmed subdued Radford, risking their own lives.
07:24The fast action of these soldiers, under stress and under trauma and under fire, absolutely saved lives.
07:33Army Secretary Dan Driscoll met with some of the injured, all of whom are expected to make a full recovery.
07:39We're going to take a quick moment and thank these six soldiers.
07:43And presented meritorious service medals to the heroes.
07:45One of the soldiers tackled the person, so just think about this.
07:50They were unarmed and ran at and tackled an armed person who they knew was actively shooting their buddies,
07:57their colleagues, their fellow soldiers.
07:59Sergeant Aaron Turner joined the unit less than a year ago.
08:02He was one of two soldiers who restrained the suspected gunman until help arrived.
08:06You'd be able to down-talk him and just being able to disengage or being able to disarm.
08:10While Turner restrained the suspected gunman, Soldier 1st Sergeant Joshua Arnold delivered aid to the wounded.
08:17It's definitely not something you want to do at work when you show up for the day.
08:21And then all of a sudden you're in a scenario where you have to stop bleeding and make sure someone's okay.
08:30Radford has been held at the Liberty County Jail since he was brought into custody.
08:36He has been interviewed, he is in confinement, and will be taken to a military detention facility at some point.
08:43As for the soldiers that we spoke with, when asked what propelled them to leap into action,
08:48they told me that's what they were trained to do.
08:51Skyler Henry, CBS News, Hinesville, Georgia.
08:54And coming up, an update on the deadly helicopter crash that shut down part of the Mississippi River.
09:00And the DOJ responds to stunning new images of a current Trump official's actions on January 6th.

09:32And a pump top?
09:33It's going to make a mess.

10:10Hey, Mom, your mouth and eyes are doing that thing again.
10:13Not again.
10:14Let's talk to your doctor.
10:16We learned the uncontrollable movements are called tardive dyskinesia, or TD, and were caused by Mom's mental health medications.
10:22Mom was prescribed Osteto XR, a once-daily extended release pill for adults.
10:27And you go to the sky.
10:30Osteto XR can significantly reduce TD movements, with some seeing a response as early as two weeks.
10:36And Mom can stay on her mental health medications.
10:39Osteto XR can cause depression, suicidal thoughts, or actions in patients with Huntington's disease.
10:43Pay close attention to and call your doctor if you become depressed, have sudden changes in mood, or have suicidal thoughts.
10:48Don't take if you have liver problems or are taking reserpine, tetrabenazine, or valbenazine.
10:52Osteto XR may cause irregular or fast heartbeat or abnormal movements.
10:56Seek help for fever, stiff muscles, problems thinking or sweating.
10:59Common side effects include inflammation of the nose and throat, insomnia, and sleepiness.
11:05If you see TD, ask about Osteto XR.
11:10The helicopter blew my...
11:11Two people are dead after a helicopter crashed into a barge on the Mississippi River.
11:16Authorities say the chopper clipped a power line and went down just north of St. Louis yesterday.
11:21Two people inside the aircraft died.
11:24No one was on the barge, which caught fire after the crash.
11:27NTSB investigators are expected to arrive on the scene today.
11:32Disturbing video of a high-level DOJ official once charged in the Capitol insurrection.
11:38And September 11th victims identified.
11:41Those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand.
11:44NPR reports on a current Trump Justice Department official seen on video urging January 6th rioters to, quote,
11:51kill officers defending the Capitol.
11:53Former FBI agent Jared Wise is now a DOJ senior advisor.
11:59In 2023, he pleaded not guilty after being indicted for his alleged actions during the insurrection.
12:05In January, his case was set to go to a jury, but it was dismissed the day after President Trump's inauguration.
12:12A spokesperson calls Wise, quote, a valued member of the Justice Department.
12:18From the New York Times, nearly 24 years after the 9-11 attacks, the remains of three victims were finally identified from minuscule evidence.
12:27The victims are Ryan Fitzgerald of Floral Park, New York, Barbara Keating of Palm Springs, California, and a woman whose name is being withheld at her family's request.
12:37Of the more than 2,700 people killed at the World Trade Center, about 1,100 have still not been officially identified.
12:46The Columbus Dispatch says the Secret Service had water levels raised on an Ohio river so that Vice President Vance could go kayaking.
12:55Last weekend's trip on the Little Miami River was to celebrate Vance's 41st birthday.
13:01The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says water was temporarily released from a nearby lake to increase the river's flow.
13:08The Secret Service said it needed to make sure motorized boats and emergency personnel could operate safely.
13:14Vance's office insists he was not told about the water release.
13:19Well, still ahead, a bad decision behind the wheel.
13:22A driver learns the hard way, shouldn't ignore stop signs.
13:29Back to the game I love.
13:31It's great to be able to keep up with the guys again.
13:33It's why I wanted more for my symptomatic obstructive HCM.
13:37So I asked my cardiologist about Camzios.
13:40With Camzios, my symptoms have improved, and I can be more active now.
13:44It's a difference I can feel, and they can see, and she can too.
13:48Camzios works by targeting what's causing OHCM, and it's proven to reduce obstruction in the heart four times more.
13:55Camzios may cause serious side effects, including heart failure that can lead to death,
13:58a risk that's increased with serious infection, irregular heartbeat, or with certain other medicines.
14:03Do not stop, start, or change medicines or dose without telling your doctor.
14:07Remember, you must have echocardiograms before and during treatment.
14:10Seek help for new or worsening heart failure symptoms.
14:12Camzios is only available through a restricted program.
14:15Before taking Camzios, tell your doctor about all your medical conditions and current or planned pregnancy.
14:20Camzios, first in its class to treat symptomatic OHCM.
14:24It's great to be playing again.
14:25Ask your cardiologist about Camzios.
14:30Music up, doors off, shades on.

15:53A hard stop and close call in Poland as a high-speed train collides with a van.
15:58The driver tries to get out of the way before the train comes hurtling down the tracks, but it's too late.
16:03As you can see, the rear of the van is completely ripped off and the remains are sent flying through the air.
16:09Here's the amazing part.
16:10The driver wasn't hurt.
16:12Well, an airline is expanding its wings and a smarter Chad GPT.

17:49Details on the new option for fighting obesity, which doesn't involve needles.
17:53Some people just know they could save hundreds on home insurance by checking Allstate first.
18:03First night in the new house.
18:04Like you know to check the neighbors first, before buying a house.
18:10What was that?
18:17What?
18:17Yeah, checking first is smart.
18:21So check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds.
18:25You're in good hands with Allstate.
18:27Your mental health is better.
18:30But having uncontrollable body movements called TD, tardive dyskinesia, can feel embarrassing.
18:36I ask my doctor about treating my TD with...
18:39Ingressa.
18:40Number one prescribed Ingressa is clinically proven to treat TD,
18:43quickly reducing TD movements by greater than five times at two weeks.
18:46Ninety-eight percent of people were still satisfied with Ingressa after two years.
18:50And you can keep taking most mental health meds.
18:52Ingressa can cause depression, suicidal thoughts, or actions in patients with Huntington's disease.
18:57Call your doctor if you become depressed, have sudden behavior, mood changes, or suicidal thoughts.
19:01Don't take Ingressa if allergic.
19:03Serious side effects may include allergic reactions like sudden, potentially fatal swelling in hives,
19:07sleepiness, the most common side effect, and heart rhythm problems.
19:10Know how Ingressa affects you before operating a car or dangerous machinery.
19:13Report fever, stiff muscles, or problems thinking, as these might be life-threatening.
19:17Shaking, stiffness, drooling, and trouble with moving or balance may occur.
19:20Taking control starts with asking your doctor about...

20:29Here's a look at today's forecast in some cities around the country.
20:32Take a look at this.
20:46An incredible new image of a high-speed comet visiting our solar system from another star.
20:51It's being called the sharpest ever picture of an interstellar comet.
20:56NASA's Hubble telescope captured the image.
20:58The comet poses no threat to Earth.
21:02Well, you see and hear about them every day, commercials praising weight loss drugs.
21:07One problem for some, they need to be injected.
21:11But now Eli Lilly reports positive results from a new obesity medication that comes in a pill.
21:16It's expected to be less expensive, too.
21:19CBS News chief medical correspondent, Dr. John LaPook, has more on this drug.
21:25People who took the pill for about a year and a half lost an average of more than 12 percent of their body weight, about 27 pounds.
21:32So it's easier to make, doesn't have to be refrigerated, it's going to be significantly less expensive to produce.
21:41Since April, we've been checking in with Dr. Louis Aroni, who's been treating obesity for 35 years, and is a consultant for Eli Lilly, the maker of this new pill.
21:51The advent of small molecule drugs to treat obesity is a big deal.
21:57This is transformational.
21:59Any sense of what the price will be of this new oral medication?
22:03When the cost of making it is so much lower, I would expect it's going to be less than $500 a month.
22:10What about supply? I know there's been shortages in the past of the injectables.
22:14It should be much easier to scale up.
22:17Monthly prescriptions of drugs that can be used for weight loss have more than tripled in the last two years, to more than 7 million.
22:24ZetBound is for adults with obesity to help lose weight and keep it off.
22:29Eli Lilly, which also makes the injectable GLP-1 drug ZetBound, is in a head-to-head battle with Wegovi maker Novo Nordisk, which has already applied to the FDA for approval of its own weight loss pill.
22:41We all love to take a pill rather than really dramatically changing our lifestyle, right?
22:46Do you have any misgivings about that being sort of the philosophy?
22:49The reason I don't have misgivings about people taking medicine to lose weight is that in 35 years of doing this, I have tried literally every kind of treatment, every kind of diet.
23:04None of it works as well as using medicine along with those strategies.
23:09Dr. John LaPook, CBS News, New York.
23:11Coming up on CBS Mornings, three-time NCAA championship head coach Don Staley is live in the studio.

25:37The so-called Canyon Fire erupted yesterday and was initially estimated at about 30 acres,
25:43but quickly jumped to nearly 5,000.
25:46Record-breaking heat is fueling the flames.
25:49And the Israeli Security Cabinet has signed off on plans to take over Gaza City.
25:54That decision stopped short of taking over the entire territory,
25:58which Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had suggested earlier yesterday.
26:03Netanyahu says the military will continue providing humanitarian aid to the civilian population outside the combat zones.
26:10Well, finally this morning, there's a new art exhibition in New York creating a lot of buzz.
26:17Insects are being used to create beautiful works of art.
26:20In this enclosure, hundreds of thousands of flies are hard at work.
26:26They may not look like it, but these are artists.
26:29And their paintings have crowds of art fans buzzing.
26:32You know, the first fly paintings I did were about 15 years ago.
26:36Conceptual artist John Knuth uses common house flies to create paintings.
26:41He does it by feeding them sugar water mixed with paint.
26:45Flies are in a constant state of regurgitation.
26:47Anytime they land on a surface, they regurgitate, suck it back in, regurgitate, suck it back in.
26:52And that's how they leave the mark behind.
26:54The process may sound random, but Knuth says he can actually direct the flies as they paint millions of tiny dots.
27:01I can't tell the flies where to land exactly, but I know where I'll get densities of paint, where the cup of paint is.
27:08So the flies go to where the cup of paint is, and then they land closest to the food source.
27:12Knuth's latest series is called The Hot Garden, on display at Hollis Taggart downtown in New York.
27:17The paintings take inspiration from the devastating Southern California wildfires earlier this year, which also destroyed Knuth's home.
27:26The hot garden becomes not only the metaphor for Altadena, where my home was, but also sort of this heating climate we're in.
27:33Unfortunately, this is a case where the art outlived the artists.
27:38All the flies who created these paintings have already died.
27:41Their lifespan is only a few weeks.
27:43Knuth says the house flies are treated well, and ingesting paint doesn't affect their lifespan.
27:48I've developed a warm spot in my heart for the flies.
27:52You know, they're fascinating animals.
27:54They're really important to the ecosystem.
27:56A blend of nature and art, with the world's tiniest artists holding the paintbrush.
28:03And The Hot Garden is on display at Hollis Taggart downtown in New York until August 16th.
