00:00Leeds Road users are being urged to prepare as significant construction work gets underway at Lawnswood Roundabout,
00:07one of the busiest junctions in North Leeds, which sees almost 50,000 vehicles pass through it every day.
00:14The works focus on this junction of the A6120 Outer Ring Road and the A660 Otley Road,
00:21which has high volumes of cyclists, pedestrians and bus users.
00:25The junction is said to currently lack adequate crossing facilities and is a major barrier for walking and cycling,
00:31especially given the proximity to Lawnswood School.
00:34Between 2020 and 2024, the junction recorded 25 injuries at the roundabout, including six serious injuries.
00:42The planned changes at Lawnswood Roundabout and the surrounding area include the introduction of signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities
00:50and segregated cycle facilities on the approaches to the roundabout.
00:55There'll be a new signalised pedestrian crossing on Otley Road, just north of Wheatwood Road,
01:00and a slight extension to the existing southbound bus lane on Otley Road.
01:04The speed limit east of Tongue Lane and between Lawnswood Roundabout and the Leeds University Sports Facilities
01:10will be reduced to 40mph, and a 50mph limit will be implemented between Leeds University Sports Facilities Access and Tongue Lane.
01:18Leeds City Council say they aim to improve safety for all road users and improve facilities for walking, wheeling and cycling
01:25across the Lawnswood Junction, with the plans aiming to make bus services quicker and more reliable on Otley Road.
01:32The scheme will be funded predominantly by the West Yorkshire Combined Authority,
01:37with a small amount of Section 106 developer contributions.
01:40No Leeds City Council budget will be used.
