11 August - National weather forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst.
Transcript
00:00Hello, good morning, welcome to your latest forecast from the Met Office.
00:04And the fourth summer heat wave begins as temperatures rise quite widely across England and Wales in particular,
00:11something not quite as hot across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland.
00:15Here are the peak temperatures for the week ahead.
00:17We're looking at the low, possibly near the mid-30s over the next few days,
00:22something a little less hot as we get towards the end of the week,
00:25but still well above average, around 29 or 30 Celsius.
00:28The average for this time of year should be nearer around 20 to 22 Celsius,
00:33particularly across southern parts of the UK.
00:35High pressure sat to the southeast.
00:37It means we're drawing in hot and humid air over the next few days,
00:40but low pressure always near the north and the west, the risk of some rain at times here,
00:45and then an increasing risk of some thunderstorms perhaps by Tuesday
00:49as low pressure generally becomes a little bit more dominant, but lots to play for for that.
00:54It's a bit of a north-south split out there at the moment.
00:57Fairly cloudy skies, Northern Ireland, Northern England, parts of Scotland, outbreaks of rain,
01:01but the rain as we go through the day should become increasingly confined to the highlands
01:05and islands, particularly by the afternoon.
01:07England and Wales seeing plenty of dry weather, some hazy spells of sunshine,
01:12best of the blue skies across eastern and southeastern parts of England.
01:16But we are watching cloud gather from the southwest, parts of southwest England into Wales,
01:21the risk of one or two heavy showers or thunderstorms developing as we move through the day here.
01:25It should be dry elsewhere, but perhaps one or two showers possible across Northern England,
01:30Southern Scotland, Northern Ireland as we go through the day.
01:33But most places dry, and those temperatures rising in that sunshine.
01:37The mid-twenties, locally high-twenties towards central and southeastern parts,
01:41a peak around 30, 31 Celsius in the London area.
01:45So feeling quite hot out there.
01:46If you want some relief from the heat, the coast will be a little cooler,
01:49and cooler conditions across the northwest of the UK, generally the low twenties here,
01:54and high teens across the northwest of Scotland, with outbreaks of rain continuing through the day.
01:59Into the evening time, this rain continues to push further north across Northern Scotland,
02:04reaching Orkney late evening time.
02:06And then overnight, the continued risk of one or two thunderstorms, some showers developing.
02:11You might find that you see some lightning, you hear some thunder without any rain,
02:15as the cloud is generally quite high levels.
02:18But most places will stay dry.
02:20The risk of some thunderstorms increases across Northern Ireland and Northern England,
02:24Southern Scotland into the early hours as well.
02:27And we'll see the continued push of hot and humid air northwards.
02:32So temperatures overnight will become increasingly warm, 15, 16 Celsius as minimums in places.
02:38Some places may be a little higher than this.
02:40So it does start to become more uncomfortable for sleeping.
02:44So Tuesday is going to be a mixed day.
02:45There are risks of one or two lingering thunderstorms first thing.
02:49They continue to push northwards, but they become more isolated as the day goes on.
02:53There should be plenty of hazy sunshine across many parts.
02:56Early rain across Orkney and Shetland will also clear.
02:59So most places, dry, but always the risk of one or two thunderstorms.
03:03Perhaps Northern England into eastern and southeastern parts of Scotland being at a higher risk.
03:09But they could pop up almost anywhere, particularly later on in the day.
03:12And in that sunshine, that strong sunshine, high UV levels, temperatures will really rise.
03:18We're looking at highs around 33 Celsius across central and central southern parts of the UK.
03:23Cooler around the coasts at the mid locally high 20s.
03:27And across the far northwest of Scotland, temperatures in the low 20s possible here as well.
03:32So into the evening time on Tuesday, the risk of one or two thunderstorms in places.
03:37So it is worth just staying up to date with the forecast.
03:40But lots of places will stay dry.
03:42And as I mentioned, the peak of the heat most likely on Tuesday and into Wednesday
03:46before just starting to ease a little bit, staying above average.
