00:00A fatal road traffic accident in Aranguas on Sunday afternoon has brought a number of people to lose their lives in vehicular accidents since last Friday to five. According to police, Negus Klozel of Patonville-Karapo was attempting to cross the Churchill Roosevelt Highway in the vicinity of the Aranguas flyover when he was struck by a Y pickup truck, which was heading in an easterly direction. Klozel was pronounced dead at the scene.
00:27TV6 News reached out to TTPS Road Safety Officer Sergeant Brent Batson concerning the spike in fatal road traffic accidents.
00:35The TTPS wishes to extend our sincerest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in road traffic crashes over the weekend.
00:45In total, according to the information, we have five persons were killed in road traffic crashes over this weekend.
00:52And these five incidents would bring the road traffic death toll to 71 compared to 70 in the same period last year.
01:02Batson cites the couple who was struck in Penal on Friday night where 47-year-old Habib John lost his life and the woman remains in critical condition in hospital.
01:11Then on Saturday, close to midnight, two pedestrians were knocked down in Maloney. One of them died.
01:18On Sunday, two males were killed in Charleyville when the 36-year-old who was driving lost control of their vehicle.
01:25This, unfortunately, wipes out the decrease that we had over the year before and may now put us, if not equal, an increase for 2025.
01:40You know, we continue to appeal to persons of the importance of practicing safe, responsible road use.
01:49We want to remind drivers that pedestrians form an important part of traffic as well.
01:54And sadly, the incident at El Zocoro, that pedestrian was struck dead within 100 feet of the walkover.
02:05Batson says people are placing their lives at risk unnecessarily, but he's not attributing these behaviours to a lack of policing.
02:15Especially high patrol units have been out there doing consistent enforcement with regards to speed as well as DUI.
02:22You know, but unfortunately, this culture of recklessness and unfortunate poor decision-making and chance-taking seems to be permeating back into the driving culture.
02:36In this regard, Sergeant Batson tells us, road law enforcement efforts will continue to be sustained.
02:43It's an increase in where possible, especially with the use of technology, which we hope to be deploying soon.
02:52But we need the public support.
02:54We hope persons, you know, really wake up and realise how fragile a human body is, how fragile life is,
03:01and unfortunately tragic consequences of unsafe road practices.
03:08Alicia Boucher, TV6 News.
03:13Thank you very much.
