01:26For centuries, the mountains and dramatic landscape have attracted visitors to the region.
01:31One of those drawn here is David Harper, who 20 years ago started a company running historical tours.
01:40Because within this idyllic alpine setting, there are echoes of one of the darker periods of German history.
01:46Nazi leader Adolf Hitler chose this spot, close to the Austrian border, for his mountain retreat.
01:57It was called the Berghof.
01:59The Berghof, where Hitler lived, was more than just a holiday home.
02:06It was more than the second seat of power after Berlin.
02:10It was, in fact, a place where very devastating decisions were made.
02:15Military, political decisions.
02:18In fact, one could say that the spark that ignited World War II stems from that very spot.
02:25But 60 years after the end of the Second World War II, it's a personal family war story which has begun to preoccupy David.
02:40Claire Harper is David's mother.
02:44She is also the sister of Noor Inayat Khan, a British secret agent who disappeared during the Second World War.
02:51For quite a few years, my mother's been writing her memoirs.
02:55Lately, she's been writing a lot about Noor.
02:59It's quite painful for my mother.
03:00She probably never got over that loss and that sense of tragedy.
03:06I found myself typing down what she's written by hand and she dictates to me.
03:13And I'm finding out a lot about her past and her family that I never knew about.

03:25When the war is over...
03:27Probably when I was five or six that my mother started talking to me about Noor.
03:34I knew that she had been very heroic and had done something wonderful for her country or for peace in the world.
03:41But I didn't know that much about it except that the family was still grieving for Noor when I was a child.
03:50There was always a sense of heaviness and great loss, which I didn't really understand that well when I was a child.
04:00Claire's difficulty in coming to terms with Noor's tragic loss has encouraged David to embark on a personal journey, retracing the steps of the aunt he never knew.
04:14The extraordinary details of Noor's time as a British agent can begin to be unraveled here at the National Archives in West London.
04:29Her file, which has been shrouded in secrecy for over 60 years, has recently been declassified by the government and released into the public domain.
04:39It reveals that Noor Inayat Khan was recruited into the top secret and highly sensitive world of the Special Operations Executive, or SOE.
04:51Its headquarters were here, in Baker Street, in central London, its objective, to wage a secret war behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied Europe.
05:04Colonel Maurice Buckmaster headed the French, or F-Section.
05:09F-Section's agents were intended to do two main jobs.
05:15One of them, sabotage.
05:17Secondly, they were to help to arm underground movements, if ever the French were capable of producing a secret army of guerrilla to operate behind the German lines, should an invasion take place.
05:34You can't have armed action without arms, and the great importance of SOE on the continent was that it was the channel through which arms were provided.
05:44What F-Section needed were spies, men who could take on false identities as French citizens working undercover in occupied France.
05:53It would be one of the most dangerous missions in the Second World War.
05:57But with an acute shortage of suitably qualified men, in April 1942, Churchill took the controversial decision to recruit women to serve behind enemy lines.
06:08One of them would be Noor.
06:10The very idea of sending women into possibly the most dangerous form of armed combat you could imagine, which is working without any sort of protection or uniform behind enemy lines, whereby if you were caught, you'd have no protection of any international law, you'd almost certainly be shot, of course, is unusual.
06:29But of the 37 women agents that SOE sent to France, Noor must have been the most unlikely spy.
06:38Descended from Indian royalty, the overriding influence throughout her life were the teachings of her pacifist Sufi father.
06:51Noor was born in the shadows of the Kremlin in January 1914, where her father, a Sufi mystic, was teaching at the imperial court.
07:00Her mother, Aura Rae Baker, was an American, who had fled her own family to marry Noor's father.
07:10In the early 1920s, the Anayat Khans moved to Serem, a western suburb of Paris, to this house, provided for them by a Sufi benefactor.
07:20The name of the house is Fasal Manzal, which means blessed house or house of blessings. My grandfather gave it that name.
07:32Like Noor, her nephew David Harper spent much of his childhood in this house immersed in the teachings of idealism and self-sacrifice.
07:41This was known as the Oriental Room. This is where Noor's father, my grandfather, received his pupils, his followers.
08:01Looks very much the same that it did in the time of Noor when she was a child here.
08:11Harsh reality was to intrude on Noor's idyllic childhood, when ill health led to her father's death when she was just 13.
08:24After the passing of our father, our mother was in such a desperate condition that Noor Nessa took on her to take care of the other children.
08:39She became the second mother. She handled the household and helped with the education of the brothers and sisters and made sure that the shoes were polished, clothes were clean and so on.
08:56Noor was academically gifted, writing poetry and stories, and she would later study child psychology at the Sorbonne.
09:04But Noor's real passion was music, the harp being her favourite instrument.
09:12The family would give concerts. They would have to then put on their Indian clothes in the evening and perform for my grandfather's guests.
09:22Noor also wrote for children, her stories appearing in the Paris newspapers and on French radio.
09:32By the age of 25, her book, 20 Jataka Tales, had been published in France, Britain and America.
09:38But Noor's pursuit of artistic endeavours and spiritual fulfillment was about to be brought to an abrupt halt.
09:47On May the 10th, 1940, German troops invaded the Low Countries and swept into France.
10:02Like millions of others across Europe, Noor's life was to change irrevocably.
10:07On June the 14th, the invading German army reached Paris.
10:18Because Noor and her family had British passports, they were forced to leave their beloved Farsal Mansell, the House of Blessings.
10:38Along with thousands of other refugees, the family struggled west via tour, eventually reaching Bordeaux, where they hoped to catch a ship, to England.
10:49Hediat, Noor's youngest brother, had decided to stay in France with his wife and young family.
10:55We didn't feel that that was the last meeting.
11:02Otherwise it might have been unbearable.
11:07Noor and the rest of the family managed to get on board the last boat of British refugees.
11:12And on the morning of June the 22nd, their ship docked at the Cornish port of Falmouth.
11:22Having reached the relative safety of England, Noor and her younger brother, Viliat, decided to join the British fight against the Nazis.
11:30One thing was very clear, their philosophical background did not allow them to kill anyone.
11:38So if they were going to help in the war, they could do anything, even if it was dangerous, so long as they wouldn't have to fire a gun.
11:46Viliat joined the Royal Navy, working on minesweepers, while Noor joined the Women's Auxiliary Air Force, the WAF, to be trained as a wireless operator, choosing the name Nora Baker to better fit into her new British life.
12:01Two years later, in 1942, Noor, now a leading aircraftswoman, was approached and invited for an interview.
12:11The invitation came from the innocuously named Inter-Services Research Bureau.
12:16In fact, it came from this building in Baker Street, the headquarters of SOE.
12:21Noor and her Yatkan got into SOE through the fact that she had noted down on joining the WAFs that she had Perfect French.
12:33And some clerk in the Air Ministry, going through the record, spotted Perfect French and reported it to the intelligence branch just in case they would have traced it.
12:42And she was interviewed in London by Selwyn Jepsen, the novelist.
12:46And he, on one look at her, knew she would do.
12:51He told me once that, as a rule, he had made up his mind in the first quarter of a minute whether a candidate was going to be any good or not, and very seldom made a mistake.
13:03The application form said simply,
13:06Agent in the field after training.
13:10Noor had reservations, but she wrote back,
13:14I shall therefore accept gratefully the privilege of carrying out the work you suggested.
13:19I feel as though I may be of some use, so long as the work is purely operational.
13:25She knew it was a dangerous job before she took it on.
13:29Right at their initial interview, Jepsen said to her,
13:33You realise, if you take this on, you're putting your life on the line.
13:37I'm putting your life on the line.
13:40It's about evens whether you come back.
13:44Nevertheless, she persevered.
13:46Because she thought it was worth doing.
13:47On the 29th of February, 1943, Noor embarked on three months of intensive training as a secret agent.
13:56She was taught how to survive in enemy territory,
13:59how to use weapons and explosives,
14:01and how to resist interrogation and torture.
14:05The Morse code skills that she had learnt in the Air Force
14:08made her the ideal candidate for a wireless operator.
14:11She would send encrypted messages back to London.
14:15This was the most dangerous role in SOE,
14:19with a life expectancy of just six weeks.
14:27Noor's file at the National Archives reveals that her training did not go well,
14:32although some reports were positive.
14:34A person for whom I have the greatest admiration.
14:37Extremely conscientious.
14:39Others were truly damning.
14:42One report describes her as
14:43emotional
14:44and having a
14:46vivid imagination.
14:48Another of her being
14:49highly temperamental.
14:53She was viewed as
14:54clumsy
14:55and that she was
14:56pretty scared of weapons.
14:59There was a report from the training section
15:01that described Noor as
15:02not overburdened with brains.
15:04In the margin of which
15:07Morris Buckmaster,
15:08the head of F-Section,
15:09penciled a fairies note,
15:11we didn't want them overburdened with brains.
15:15However,
15:16there was a more damning assessment
15:17further down.
15:19She has an unstable
15:20and temperamental personality
15:22and it's very doubtful
15:23whether she's really suited
15:24to work in the field.
15:25Despite these reservations,
15:33Noor was told to prepare
15:34for a mission to France.
15:38She more or less
15:40finished her course.
15:41Certainly her
15:42morse had finished
15:43as I remember it.
15:45And
15:45she was ready to go
15:46and there wasn't anybody else.
15:49What do you do?
15:50She was a fully trained
15:53wireless operator.
15:54The SOE was desperately
15:56short of fully trained
15:57wireless operations
15:58without which it couldn't work.
16:00So the case for Seneca
16:01overweighed the case
16:03against Seneca.
16:05The final steps
16:06in turning Noor into a spy
16:08were put into place.
16:10She was given
16:11a false identity.

16:20Preparations were underway.
