The King of Coronia (Don Adams), the very Ronald Colman-like king whom we met in the Season 3 episode "The King Lives", is in the United States on official Coronian business. A plot against him by the swashbuckling yet devious Rupert of Rathskeller (played by an uncredited James Caan) may come to fruition unless Max can pass himself off successfully as his lookalike. However, things are more complicated this time around, as Max is now married to 99, and he fears that the charming King may be doing more to sweep 99 off her feet than he can.

00:00All I asked for was a mustache. You call that a mustache?
00:06Well, there's a mustache under here someplace, Chief.
00:08Max, all I wanted from you was a nice, thin, normal mustache.
00:12Now, you go back down to the makeup department and turn that in.
00:15Right, Chief.
00:16What do you mean, turn it in? I can't turn it in. This is my hair.
00:20Max, I gave these orders a week ago. Are you trying to tell me you grew that much hair in a week?
00:24Well, Chief, the control lab gave me the special salve that I put on my face every night before I went to bed.
00:28And it grew that much hair in only one week?
00:31You should see my pillow.
00:33That's fantastic.
00:36Max, will it grow hair on your head, too?
00:39Oh, no, I'm sorry about that, Chief. But I'll tell you what you can do.
00:42What?
00:43You can put the salve on your face, and when the hair grows real long, you can comb it back over your head.
00:47That is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard.
00:49It is?
00:50Yes.
00:50Then don't do it.
00:52Max, the assignment I have for you calls for a thin mustache.
00:55Now go down to the controlled barbershop and have him shave everything else off.
00:58All right, Chief, but you haven't told me what my assignment is yet.
01:01Well, I can't tell you yet. The only thing I can tell you is that you're about to embark on a highly secret mission of such magnitude
01:06that the lives of two million people may very well rest in your hands.
01:11Oh. Well, in that case, Chief, I'd better get a manicure, too.
01:15Did you meet the boat?
01:17Yes, sir, Chief. We were waiting for it once you docked.
01:19Did everything go smoothly?
01:20Yes, except for one little detail.
01:22What's that?
01:22Well, we met the boat, we got the mummy case, we put it on the truck, and as I was escorting the truck here from the dock,
01:27we ran in some heavy traffic.
01:28Larrabee, what happened to the mummy case?
01:30Well, I lost them in traffic, and I don't know where they are.
01:33The king of Corona is in that mummy case.
01:35Really?
01:36Yes, really.
01:37That's terrible. You think a king could afford better accommodations than that?
01:40Larrabee, he was being smuggled into the country. No one was to know he's here.
01:44Well, don't worry, Chief. I'm sure we'll locate the truck.
01:46I don't know if we have enough time. The king was put into that mummy case a half hour before the boat docked.
01:51Now, according to our calculations, there was only enough air in that case to keep him alive for two hours.
01:55Now, he only has ten minutes left.
01:58Oh, Larrabee, get that. I don't want to talk to anybody unless it's important.
02:04Hello? Who's calling?
02:06Oh, yes, he's here, but he doesn't want to talk to anyone now. He's busy.
02:09Okay, so you're busy, too, so what do you want from me?
02:13He told me he doesn't want to talk to anybody.
02:16Look, why don't I have him call you back later when he has a free moment?
02:19No, I don't think you should hang on because we want to keep the line open in case we can get an important call.
02:23Who is that?
02:24It's the President of the United States.
02:27You can read that phone!
02:28Good afternoon, sir.
02:32No, sir, not yet. It's lost somewhere in traffic in downtown Washington.
02:36Yes, sir, we'll let you know as soon as we know anything more.
02:39The king has only five minutes of air left to breathe, and the men driving that truck don't know where our secret headquarters are.
02:45Hello?
02:48Send them right in.
02:49They're here.
02:50Thank heavens we don't have a second to spare.
02:53Where do you want it?
02:55Well, good. Just put it down there. That's fine.
02:58How in the world did you men find us?
02:59Well, we stopped in this gas station, and I asked a man if he could tell us how to get to control headquarters.
03:06And he knew?
03:07No, he didn't know.
03:08But there were a couple of kids putting air in their bicycle tires, and they knew.
03:14Larry, show them out, please.
03:15Right, chief.
03:25I'm sorry, Royal Highness. We'll have you out of there in just a moment.
03:32Is this what you had in mind, chief?
03:34Yes, that's very good, Max. That's perfect.
03:36Max, if you don't mind, I can't talk right now. I'm very busy.
03:38Oh, okay, chief.
03:40Where'd you get the mummy?
03:41It's mine. I bought it in an antique shop.
03:43Oh, really?
03:44You know, I saw a movie once with Turin Bay, and he bought this mummy, and this mummy put a curse on him.
03:49Do you believe in curses, chief?
03:50No.
03:50Well, maybe you don't, but Turin Bay never worked again.
03:58I'll have you out of there in a minute, you Royal Highness.
04:05You forgot to give me my assignment, chief.
04:07I'll give it to you tonight, Max.
04:08Just be at the masquerade party at the Coronian Embassy tonight, and I'll explain everything.
04:12Right, chief.
04:16Your Royal Highness, I'm terribly sorry.
04:20Your Royal Highness.
04:24Your Royal Highness.
04:25Your Royal Highness.
04:40Oh, my God, title.
04:40Oh, my God.
04:41Oh, my God.
04:42My God.
04:43My God.
04:43And a lovely цauthor.
04:46Oh, my God.
04:47I'll make you look at us.
04:49Bye.
04:50Oh, my God.
04:50Bye.
04:50Bye.
04:51Bye.
04:51Bye.
04:52Bye.
04:52Bye.
04:53Bye.
04:53Hello.
05:24Hurry up, 99. It will be late.
05:42I'll be ready in just a minute, Max.
05:49Max, if you have a minute, would you clear the table?
05:51I just did.
05:54Ah, 99. You better hurry up or we'll be late.
06:07I'll be down in a minute, Max.
06:08I'm ready, Max.
06:23Now, my love, your beauty eclipses the brightness of the moon.
06:26Oh, thank you, Max. You look very dashing yourself.
06:30You really think so, 99?
06:31Oh, yes. I don't know what assignment the chief had in mind when he had you grow that mustache, but it looks perfect with your costume.
06:38I don't know why the 99, but it certainly presented a problem.
06:40Why?
06:41Well, I didn't know whether to come to the masquerade as D'Artagnan, Dickie Smothers, or Anna Magnani.
06:46Well, you made the perfect choice.
06:47Yes, well, I didn't pick the costume 99. The chief picked it.
06:50Oh, I wonder why the ball's being held at the Cronian embassy.
06:53I don't know, but we better hurry or we'll be late.
06:58Come, my love, your royal carriage waits without.
07:01Oh, Max. Sometimes when you talk like that, you sound so much like King Charles of Cronia, I think you must be him.
07:07Yes. Well, when I'm with you, my dear, I feel like a king.
07:10Well, your majesty, haven't you forgotten something?
07:12Forgotten something?
07:13What have I forgotten?
07:15To take out the garbage.
07:31Sorry about that 99.
07:32Oh, that's all right, Max. I'll go into the powder room and fix it.
07:35Wait for me here.
07:43Wait for me here.
08:13Did I take too long, Max?
08:15No, my darling. A moment away from you is like an eternity.
08:18Max, when you play a part, you really go all out.
08:21Well, come, my dear. Let us join the others and dance. It will give me a chance to hold you in my arms.
08:25You should never get out of this costume, Max.
08:39Colonel von Klaus.
08:40I'm smart. I regret that we have to meet again like this.
08:44What happened?
08:46And why are we talking in front of this dirty kid?
08:48It's me.
08:49Oh, it's you, Chief.
08:51I thought it was Tiny Tim.
08:53Max, because of security, we couldn't tell you earlier what was going to happen.
08:57King Charles of Koronia is here in Washington on a very crucial mission.
09:01Mr. Smart, I have something very important to show you.
09:04King Charles wants to secure a very large loan from your country to keep the army of Koronia strong.
09:10And so for security, he's turning over this.
09:13What is it?
09:13The Royal Diamond Scepter.
09:16This is a mission the king's enemies will do anything to stop.
09:19The king's enemies?
09:20I thought I got rid of Basil when I was in Koronia.
09:23I did get rid of Basil, didn't I?
09:25Yes, but not Basil's aid.
09:27Someone far more treacherous and deadly.
09:30Basil's wife?
09:31You know, Rupert of Rathskeller.
09:34Of course.
09:35Rotten, ruthless Rupert of Rathskeller.
09:38He's a handsome devil.
09:40A dazzling swordsman.
09:42And the women of Koronia find him irresistible.
09:44How did the men find him?
09:45He's in the phone book.
09:47We believe that Rupert is here and will try to stop the loan by stealing the scepter.
09:52He'll then take over the Koronian army and kill King Charles.
09:55So once again, because of your remarkable resemblance to King Charles, we ask your help.
10:00I see.
10:02In other words, what you're asking me to do is to impersonate the king again.
10:05Act as a decoy in case anyone wants to kill him.
10:08Is that correct?
10:09Exactly.
10:10We want King Charles to stay at your apartment.
10:12Now, we've given him an exact replica of your wardrobe so that when people see him, they'll
10:15think he's you.
10:16Does 99 know?
10:18Not yet.
10:19This basquerade ball is the perfect time to make the switch.
10:21We must do nothing to jeopardize it.
10:23I see.
10:25Well, then I presume that King Charles will reveal his true
10:31identity to 99 when they get to the apartment.
10:35Up until then, of course, she'll think she's with me.
10:40Is that correct?
10:41Max, I think she'll find out when she discovers the man she's dancing with is charming, sophisticated,
10:46and a good dancer.
10:47Of course.
10:47Well, to tell you the truth, I don't think that's such a good idea.
10:52I mean, after all, we don't live in a palace.
10:54We just live in a little apartment.
10:56His Majesty will love it.
10:57It'll give him a chance to relax, take off his crown, and be like an ordinary person.
11:01Well, it's all right with me if it's okay with 99, but I think I should go out there
11:05and check.
11:06No, Max.
11:07They have to finish out the evening together and return home together.
11:10We must arouse no suspicions of any kind.
11:13You see, King Charles has been well informed on the domestic background of Mr. and Mrs. 86.
11:19And he still wants to stay with us?
11:21As far as your neighbors are concerned, they'll think he's you.
11:25Good.
11:25Then he can take out the garbage.
11:28Max!
11:29Max, you're to wait here until King Charles and 99 arrive at the apartment.
11:36Then you can go home and explain everything to 99.
11:39Now, we better get back to the party.
11:41In the meantime, guard this with your life until we return.
12:06Good evening, Your Majesty.
12:16Ah, what good, good fortune to find you here.
12:18And alone.
12:19Oh, you must excuse this untimely intrusion, but you see, no one was thoughtful enough to
12:23send me an invitation.
12:25Ah, but then we rascalers were never much on formality, were we?
12:28Ah, Rupert.
12:30Of course, my good friend Rupert.
12:33How good of you to come.
12:35You're such a charming and handsome fellow.
12:37I'm sure the ladies will be delighted to see you.
12:42Come, come.
12:42Let us not keep them waiting.
12:44But first the scepter.
12:45Scepter?
12:46What scepter?
12:48The scepter behind your back.
12:50Oh.
12:51That scepter.
12:52Hand it over.
13:00Forget it.
13:02There's only one way you can take the scepter out of this room, my friend.
13:06That's the way.
13:16Now, if you would be so kind as to step aside, Your Majesty.
13:22Very clever, Your Majesty.
13:27The old scepter of the cord on the lamp track.
13:39Come, come, Your Majesty.
13:40All the doors and windows are locked.
13:42And only I know a way out.
13:43All the doors and windows are locked.
14:13Come, Your Majesty.
14:14All the doors and windows are locked.
14:14Go, Your leg.
14:14All the doors and windows are locked.
14:15You'll where the doors and windows are locked.
14:16Get in your house right now.
14:16Come, your son.
14:18Come, Your Majesty.
14:21How, Your Window.
14:27Who's mad?
14:34Come, Your buffet.
14:40I'm going to fix myself a cup of coffee, Maxwell. Would you care for a cup?
15:01No, thanks, Your Highness.
15:05Oh, I'm going to bed now, love. Good night.
15:10Good night.
15:1699.
15:18I'm over here. That's King Charles.
15:21Oh, Your Highness, I'm terribly sorry.
15:24No, that's quite all right, my dear.
15:31Oh, Max, I'm sorry, but you two look so much alike.
15:35Well, that's it, 99. That is it. I am making a new ruling around here.
15:38There will be no more kissing. Absolutely no more kissing.
15:40Until this assignment is over and King Charles goes back to Caronia.
15:44But, Max, he might be here for another week.
15:46Well, I'm sorry, 99, but that's the way it's got to be.
15:49Do you mean to say you could go a whole week without kissing me?
15:52Why not? I've gone the whole night, haven't I?
15:55Night, Max.
15:56Good night.
15:57Who is it?
16:09Max, it's me, the chief. Let me in.
16:12Oh, hi, chief.
16:13Hi, Max.
16:13I just got your message that you wanted to see me immediately.
16:16Yes.
16:17You just got my message now?
16:18I phoned that message into the Caronian embassy over three hours ago.
16:22Well, Max, the man who took the message doesn't understand English.
16:24Well, that's why I gave him the message in Caronian.
16:27You don't speak Caronian.
16:28But he didn't know that.
16:30Max, it's late. What is it you wanted to see me about?
16:32Oh, well, you know, chief, after you and Colonel von Klaus left me in the embassy room,
16:36I had a visit from Rupert of Rathskel.
16:38Max, he didn't get the scepter.
16:40No, I managed to escape and bring it back here.
16:41Oh, thank heavens.
16:42Well, you better give me the scepter.
16:43Let me take it back to headquarters for safe keeping.
16:45Right, chief.
16:50What's the matter?
16:51Yeah, well, here, what's the matter?
16:53Yes, well, you're not going to like this, chief, but I forgot where I hid the scepter.
16:58What?
16:59Yes, well, you see, chief, when I came home, I had the scepter in my hand.
17:02And I was looking for a good place to hide it.
17:04And then all of a sudden, I looked around, and there was the King of 99 kissing in the doorway.
17:07And I got so upset that I just, well, I just forgot where I hid the scepter.
17:10All right, Max, don't panic.
17:11Let's reconstruct the entire thing from when you came home.
17:14That's a good idea, chief.
17:15Now, you go out the door and come in just like you did.
17:17What's the first thing you did when you came in the door?
17:18First thing I did, I tripped over the rug.
17:20Well, you don't have to do that this time.
17:21Just come in.
17:22Right, chief.
17:28What'd you do next?
17:29Next, I went into the kitchen and I fixed myself a cup of coffee.
17:32Do it.
17:32All right, chief.
17:33How can you fix coffee that fast?
17:42It's instant coffee, my friend.
17:44I'm sorry, your highness.
17:45I thought you were Max.
17:46No, Maxwell is in the kitchen.
17:47Is there anything wrong, chief?
17:48Oh, no, your highness.
17:49Everything's fine.
17:50Now, then I bid you a fine good night.
17:52Good night, your highness.
17:52It's no good, chief.
18:00I can't remember whether I left the scepter on the counter in the kitchen
18:03or whether I brought it back in here.
18:05If I only had something that was, you know, like the size of the scepter
18:09that I could hold in my hand, then maybe I could remember.
18:11Well, what about a broomstick?
18:12Do you have a broom?
18:13Yes, I have one in the closet over here, chief.
18:18All righty.
18:18Now, I'll just break this.
18:21There you are.
18:21Well, that's about the size of the scepter.
18:23That's good, chief.
18:24That's just about right.
18:25Wait a minute.
18:26Wait a minute.
18:27Now I remember.
18:28Now I remember.
18:28I came out of the kitchen, and I looked across,
18:31and I saw that the window was open.
18:32Now, I said to myself, what is the window doing open?
18:34I know I didn't open the window, chief.
18:36So I said, if I didn't open the window, then somebody else did,
18:38so I better close it.
18:39So I came over here.
18:40Now, the window was open.
18:41Open it up.
18:42Now, close it just like you did.
18:43All right.
18:43Oops.
18:45You didn't drop the scepter in the street.
18:47No, I dropped the broomstick in the street, chief.
18:50Are you sure you didn't drop the scepter in the street?
18:51I'm positive I didn't drop the scepter,
18:53because I remember when I turned around and looked,
18:55there was the King of 99 standing in the doorway,
18:57and I had the scepter in my hand.
18:58All right.
18:58Now, what did you do next?
18:59Next, yes.
19:01Well, next, let's see, chief.
19:02I remember I came out.
19:04I think I went to the bar.
19:05No, no.
19:05I didn't go to the bar, because I said to myself,
19:07no, tonight I'm not going to have a drink,
19:08because things are too upset.
19:09So then I went upstairs to the...
19:11No, I didn't do that either.
19:13I just can't remember without the broomstick, chief.
19:16Well, all right.
19:17I'll break off another piece.
19:18Let me have the broom.
19:19Huh?
19:19The broom.
19:20Let me have it.
19:20Oh.
19:21Where is it?
19:22Well, I gave it to you, Max.
19:23No, no, no, chief.
19:24I gave it to you.
19:25You had it.
19:25No, Max.
19:26You had the broom.
19:27I distinctly remember you having the broomstick, chief.
19:29Max, I took the broom.
19:30I broke off a piece.
19:31I gave you a piece, and I gave you back the broom.
19:33No, chief.
19:33You took the broom.
19:34You broke off a piece.
19:35You handed me a piece, and you kept the broomstick.
19:37Max, don't panic.
19:38Let's reconstruct everything that we did.
19:40Oh, shall I bring King Charles back down, chief?
19:42Come on.
19:42Let's do this ourselves.
19:43Oh, Scott.
19:43Now, you went to the broom closet.
19:44Right, chief.
19:45I went to the broom closet.
19:46I opened it up, reached in, handed you the broom.
19:48Right.
19:48And I broke off a piece, and I handed you a piece of the broom.
19:51Right, chief.
19:53And then what happened?
19:54Well, I don't know.
19:54What happened?
19:56I don't know, chief.
19:57I can't remember without the broomstick.
19:59If I only had something that felt like the broomstick, then maybe I could remember.
20:02The umbrella.
20:03We'll use the umbrella for the broomstick.
20:05All right, Max, let's not panic.
20:15Let's reconstruct every move we made from the moment I handed you the umbrella.
20:19Right, chief.
20:20And that'll lead us to the umbrella.
20:21And once we find the umbrella, that will lead us to the broomstick.
20:24And once we find the broomstick, that will lead us to the, uh, to the, uh, uh, what are we looking for, chief?
20:31The scepter, Max.
20:33The scepter.
20:33Now, I handed you the umbrella.
20:35Right, chief.
20:36And then I dropped it on the floor.
20:37Right.
20:37And then we both reached over to pick it up.
20:40Oh, my God.
20:41That part I remember very well.
20:43Well, what did you do after you picked up the umbrella, chief?
20:45I didn't do anything, Max, because I didn't pick up the umbrella.
20:48You picked up the umbrella.
20:49Now, wait a minute, chief.
20:50I distinctly remember you picking up that umbrella from the floor.
20:53All right, Max.
20:53Now, let's not panic.
20:54Let's take it off from the top again.
20:55Okay.
20:55I walked over to the umbrella stand.
20:57Right.
20:57I reached in, and I took out the umbrella.
20:59Then I walked over to...
21:01It's a scepter.
21:02The scepter has been in the umbrella stand all along.
21:06Oh, of course.
21:07Now, I remember, chief.
21:09I heard something at the door, so I slipped behind the door to see what was.
21:13Then when the door opened up and I saw the king in 99 kissing, I got so nervous and excited
21:17that I let the scepter slip from my hand, and it dropped into the umbrella stand.
21:21And that is exactly where it's going to remain.
21:24In the umbrella stand?
21:25Yes.
21:25If you and I couldn't find it in there, Rupert never will.
21:28Maybe you're right, chief.
21:29Well, all's well that ends well.
21:32Oh, yes.
21:32Well, that's easy for you to say, but I'm out an umbrella and a broom.
21:35Well, I'm sure you'll find it, Max.
21:37Now, you said I could borrow your car to get home.
21:39Now, that's right, chief.
21:40It's parked right in front of the building.
21:41Good.
21:41Let me have the keys, please.
21:42Huh?
21:43The keys.
21:43Let me have them.
21:43Oh, well, I gave you the keys, chief.
21:45No, you didn't, Max.
21:45You didn't give me the keys.
21:46Oh, yes, I did, chief.
21:47When you said, could I borrow the car, that's when I gave you the keys.
21:49Max, you did not give me the keys.
21:51Chief, I distinctly remember when you asked to borrow the car, I reached in to the pocket
21:55of my robe and I handed you the keys.
21:56Max, you did not hand me the car, chief.
21:58That's not panic, chief.
22:02All right, get started.
22:03All right, get started.
22:33Hello, Rupert.
22:41King Charles is staying with Maxwell Smart.
22:44We're right outside the door.
22:47Troy sent in the silent visitor.
22:50In a matter of moments, every human being in that apartment will be dead.
22:53The book is searching.
23:08To be continued.
