AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reported from North Dakota ahead of what may be a busy storm-chasing day in the northern Plains.
Transcript
00:00It's going to be an active next several days across the northern plains and midwest.
00:04That's all going to kick off today with severe weather, widespread severe weather,
00:08across the western half of the Dakotas, namely up in North Dakota,
00:12where we're expecting a mix of damaging winds, very large hail,
00:16and even the potential for a couple of isolated tornadoes.
00:19I started working my way up this way from Colorado yesterday,
00:23eventually arriving in Valentine, Nebraska.
00:25I left there early this morning.
00:27I've been taking some of the back highways and working my way up,
00:30eventually crossing I-90 and continuing northbound through South Dakota,
00:34revisiting some very old chase territory for me,
00:37some areas that hold some fond memories for me and the TwistX team back in 2010.
00:42But we will be tracking storms on the other side of the border here in North Dakota today,
00:47expecting storms to fire late this afternoon, and they will last through the evening.
00:51Early threats are going to be hail as large as three, maybe even four inches,
00:56so comparative to some of the hail I saw at the beginning of the week down in Colorado,
00:59that tornado threat will also be maximized late this afternoon into the early evening.
01:04Those storms will generate a line, a forward-moving line of storms,
01:08and that will become a bigger threat for embedded tornadoes,
01:11but it's going to be widespread damaging winds.
01:13That will be the main threat through the overnight hours as that complex works its way on off to the east.
01:17Unfortunately, a similar setup tomorrow on the eastern half of the states,
01:21and we'll see those severe weather chances peak out tomorrow across North Dakota,
01:25in parts of South Dakota, and then eventually working into western Minnesota,
01:29and then I will track that storm system south through the rest of the weekend.
01:32Reporting for AccuWeather in North Dakota, I'm meteorologist Tony Laubach.
