00:00Hello and welcome to Tipping Point, the brand new quiz show where thousands of pounds hang in the balance every day.
00:24The star of the show is this extraordinary machine. It's loaded with black and silver counters and they're all worth £50 each.
00:32The aim of the game is simply to get as many out as possible because only one contestant will have the chance to play the machine for our £10,000 juxtapod.
00:40The others will leave with nothing. This machine can make dreams but it can also break them.
00:46So let's meet the four players all hoping that the machine will be tipping in their favour today.
00:51I'm Chad. I'm a lab technician from Surrey.
00:55I'm Vicky. I'm a chartered management accountant from Hertfordshire.
00:58I'm Tom. I'm a politics and German student and I'm from Portsmouth.
01:02I'm Marilyn. I'm a biomedical scientist and I'm from Godalming.
01:06Welcome and good luck to all of you. Let's play Tipping Point.
01:09Now in round one you each start with three counters. Questions are on the buzzer and a correct answer gives you a choice.
01:19Do you play one of your own counters or if you don't think the machine is looking promising and it isn't at that crucial tipping point, you can make one of your opponents pay to play instead.
01:28It'll use up one of their precious turns. But of course, if anything does come out, they keep the money.
01:34Every counter that comes out of the machine is worth £50.
01:37Whoever has the least amount of money at the end of this round will be eliminated.
01:41One last thing. If you give me a wrong answer and you lose one of your counters, all of those counters go into our penalty pot and we'll be up for grabs at the end of the round.
01:51All available on a single question. So everything could change.
01:55OK, fingers on your buzzers. Here comes the first question.
02:00By which stage name is U2 guitarist David Evans?
02:04Vicky. Bono.
02:06It's not. Oh no.
02:07It's the edge. Vicky, you lose one of your counters.
02:10That will go into the penalty pot. You'll all get a chance to try and play for that at the end of the round.
02:14So next question.
02:16According to legend, which 18th century highwayman had a horse called Black Bess?
02:21Going again, Vicky.
02:23Dick Turpin?
02:24It was Dick Turpin. Hurrah.
02:26Your choice. Have a look at our machine, Vicky. Does it look like she's ready to pay out?
02:31Not quite yet, no. So I'm going to nominate another player.
02:34You're going to make one of your competitors go first.
02:36I am.
02:37Who are you going to force into the chair?
02:39Chad.
02:40Chad?
02:41So, Chad, you're going to have to use up one of your counters now.
02:44OK.
02:45If you want to use either of the four drop zones, one, two, three or four, which one do you think is the most likely to pay out?
02:51I think drop zone number two.
02:54Could we fire up drop zone two, please?
02:57So it all comes down to timing now, Chad.
02:59OK.
03:00You may release your counter when you're ready.
03:03Away he goes.
03:05Quite a bouncy one.
03:07It's landed quite nicely.
03:08Will it settle on the shelf?
03:11It has.
03:14Sort of the damage.
03:15Are we going to see anything onto the next shelf?
03:19Three counters have tripped down.
03:21Is it going to be a win counter?
03:23It is!
03:24So congratulations, Chad.
03:25Five counters made it into the winning zone.
03:27That's £250 into your bank.
03:29Well done.
03:30Thank you, Ben.
03:31Thank you, Vicky.
03:32Absolutely.
03:33That could be a big mistake, Vicky.
03:35I think it was.
03:36OK.
03:37Your next question.
03:38During which war did the charge of the light brigade take place?
03:43Marilyn.
03:44Boar?
03:45It wasn't the Boar War.
03:46It's the Crimean War, Marilyn.
03:48I'm afraid you lose one of your counters.
03:50That goes into the penalty pot.
03:52There are two counters in that penalty pot that will be up for grabs at the end of this
03:57round.
03:58Next question.
03:59What is the first name of David and Victoria Beckham's fourth child?
04:02Marilyn.
04:03Harper.
04:04That's correct.
04:05Well done.
04:06Do you know all the children's names?
04:09No.
04:10Fortunately, you knew that one.
04:11I did.
04:12The only one you needed.
04:13That's the winning name for me.
04:15Absolutely.
04:16So, are you going to play one of your counters or force one of your competitors to have a
04:21go?
04:22I'd like to play one of my counters, please.
04:24OK.
04:25Which drop zone would you like, Marilyn?
04:26I'd like drop zone number three, please.
04:27OK.
04:28Can we fire up drop zone three, please?
04:30Marilyn, release that counter when you think it's exactly the right time.
04:37There it goes.
04:40It was a quick drop.
04:42It's landed flat.
04:44Will it cause any damage?
04:46No!
04:47That is a serious overhang.
04:50It is right on the edge, Marilyn, but it's not going to go.
04:53Not this time.
04:54So, the rest of you are in play.
04:56Next question.
04:57Shakespeare is known as the bard of where?
05:00Chad?
05:01Avon.
05:02It is Avon.
05:03Well done.
05:04You've already got £250 in the bank, Chad.
05:07Are you going to play one of your counters or force one of your competitors to have a go?
05:10Thanks to Marilyn, I think it should pay out of two or three.
05:14OK.
05:15So, are you going to go for drop zone number two or drop zone number three, Chad?
05:18I'll go for drop zone number two, Ben.
05:21Your second counter.
05:22Release it when you're ready.
05:25Here comes a very quick drop right into the centre of that drop zone.
05:31Anything going to fall?
05:32No.
05:33Not this time.
05:34Next question.
05:36In March 2012, which politician won the Bradford West by-election?
05:42Tom?
05:43George Galloway.
05:44It was George Galloway, Tom.
05:45Well done.
05:46Perfect question for you.
05:47As a politics student, you should have got that right.
05:49Excellent question.
05:50So, you've watched the others have a go.
05:51This is your first chance.
05:52Are you going to try and steal the good work that Chad and Marilyn have put in or...?
05:55I think I might do.
05:56You're going to go for it.
05:57So, which drop zone would you like?
05:58I have drop zone number three, please.
06:00Tom?
06:01Release your counter when you're ready.
06:09There you go.
06:10It's still moving.
06:11It's settled nicely, though.
06:12Anything going to come off the end?
06:13Ooh.
06:14Goodness me!
06:16There are so many overhangs on that shelf.
06:18Something is going to fall very shortly.
06:21OK.
06:22Your next question.
06:23Which blur hit begins with the words,
06:25Confidence is a preference for the habitual voyeur?
06:28Vicky, you've gone for it.
06:30Park life?
06:31It is park life.
06:32Well done.
06:33Vicky, are you going to play or pass?
06:35I'm going to play.
06:37Let's see if you can make the most of it.
06:38There's a lot of overhangs.
06:39There are a lot.
06:40Which drop zone would you like to go for?
06:42Number three, please.
06:43Here we go, Vicky.
06:44It's all about timing.
06:45Release your counter when you're ready.
06:51Bouncing around.
06:52Is that where you wanted it to go, Vicky?
06:53No.
06:54I wanted it further over.
06:55Oh, and it's ridden up as well on the counter at the back.
06:58Oh, no.
06:59They tend not to do that much damage.
07:00No.
07:01But will it affect it?
07:02No.
07:03Another wasted counter.
07:05I leave them all.
07:06Now, that shelf is quite literally stacked and waiting to pay out.
07:10Only Chad has any money in his bank.
07:12Remember, a player with the least amount of money at the end of this round
07:15will be going home.
07:17Next question.
07:24Vicky?
07:25Bolton.
07:26It is Bolton.
07:27Well done.
07:28You know your football.
07:29I don't.
07:30I just know that one.
07:31Well, it was the perfect one to know.
07:32So, your last counter, Vicky.
07:33Are you going to play or are you going to pass it?
07:34I'm going to have to play it, Ben.
07:35Which drop zone would you like?
07:36Number three again, please.
07:37You really need to get a payout now, Vicky.
07:40This is your last counter.
07:45You need this one to work.
07:47Not looking confident.
07:48How will it sit?
07:49It's settled down.
07:51What sort of damage will it cause to that shelf?
07:54There's two gone.
07:56Two over the top.
07:57We need some to pay out.
07:58Come on.
07:59Yes!
08:00Well done, Vicky.
08:01That's two for £100 with your last counter at the end.
08:04With your last counter as well.
08:05Well played.
08:07But you've used up all your counters.
08:09Let's hope £100 is enough to see you get through to round two.
08:13Tom and Marilyn, we need you to get some money in the bank.
08:16Your next question.
08:21Tom.
08:22The Twilight movies.
08:23It is the Twilight movies.
08:24Well done.
08:25Are you going to play one of yours or force one of your competitors to play?
08:27I'm going to play.
08:28OK.
08:29So which drop zone do you like the look of, Tom?
08:31Number three, please, Ben.
08:33Let's see if you can make this one work.
08:34Release it when you're ready.
08:41Settle nicely.
08:42Will it send anything over the edge?
08:45Nothing yet!
08:47You can see them all desperately trying to jump off the shelf for you.
08:50One of you will get them.
08:51The next question.
08:53In rhyming slang, who or what is a tea leaf?
08:58Chad.
08:59A thief.
09:00It is a thief.
09:01Well done.
09:02I assume you're going to play.
09:03I'm going to play, yes.
09:04What would you like to try and hit?
09:05I'll try number two.
09:07Release your counter when you're ready.
09:12Be careful about it.
09:13It's a very quick drop.
09:14Can't decide where it's going to go.
09:16It's sitting pretty at the moment.
09:18Will it cause any damage?
09:21It's gone!
09:25Well done, Chad.
09:26My kind of game, Ben.
09:28Six have come out of the machine.
09:30That's another £300 into your bank.
09:33Congratulations to you, Chad.
09:34Thank you, Ben.
09:35You have a total of £550.
09:38However, you've now used all three counters, though,
09:40so you're out of the round for the time being.
09:42Tom and Marilyn, you both have one counter left each.
09:47Neither of you has any money.
09:48The person with the least amount will be eliminated after this round.
09:53OK?
09:54An advert by the British Heart Foundation showed Vinnie Jones
09:57carrying out CPR to which Bee Gees song?
10:01Tom, it's staying alive.
10:03It is staying alive.
10:04It had to be staying alive, didn't it?
10:05I had to think about it.
10:07So, are you going to force Marilyn to play her last counter
10:09or are you going to play yours?
10:11I think I'll play mine.
10:13OK. Which drop zone do you like the look of?
10:15Number three again, please, Ben.
10:16So, make it count.
10:19You may release it when you're ready.
10:25We're bouncing around.
10:27We desperately need this to settle.
10:28Do you think that's going to cause much damage?
10:30Will it send any over the tipping point?
10:33No!
10:34A complete waste.
10:35Oh!
10:36That came from nowhere!
10:37Yeah!
10:38It's me!
10:39Just goes to show what this machine can do.
10:40When you think it's not going to pay out, you have a huge payout.
10:44Eight have made it out of the machine.
10:45That's £400 straight into your bank.
10:47Well played.
10:49So, Marilyn, you have one last counter to play.
10:50So, this question is yours.
10:51You still need to give me a correct answer.
10:53Right.
10:54Before we put all the counters in the penalty pot up for grabs
10:57so everything can change.
10:59Your last question then, Marilyn.
11:00Which Scottish city has a railway station called Waverley?
11:05Edinburgh.
11:06That's right.
11:07Well done.
11:08So, Marilyn, you need to get some money into your bank.
11:11Which of the drop zones do you like the look of?
11:13Drop zone...
11:15Number two, please.
11:18Release it when you're ready.
11:26Here it comes.
11:27It's settled very quickly indeed.
11:29Is anything going to come over the edge?
11:30Yes.
11:32Two flippers.
11:34Anything into the winning zone?
11:36Not this time, Marilyn.
11:38I'm afraid you've got nothing from any of your three counters.
11:41But, of course, it's not all over.
11:44Because of the two incorrect answers in that round,
11:46there are two counters up for grabs in the penalty pot.
11:49This could change everything.
11:51I'm going to ask you one single question on the buzzer.
11:53Whoever gets it right will win both those counters.
11:56If you buzz in and give me the wrong answer, then you're out of the running.
12:00Marilyn, you're currently in last position.
12:03Which means, to get through to the next round, you have to get this question right
12:06and try and hope that those counters pay out.
12:08Indigo and which of the other seven traditional colours of...
12:14Tom's gone very early.
12:17Violet.
12:18I was going to say indigo and which of the other seven traditional colours of the rainbow
12:23begin with a vowel.
12:25It's not violet. It was orange.
12:26Tom, I'm afraid you're out.
12:28So, for Chad, Vicky and Marilyn.
12:31What is the only number to have its own number of letters in its name?
12:36Vicky's gone for it.
12:37Four.
12:38It is four, Vicky.
12:39Yes.
12:40Well done.
12:41OK.
12:42It's up to you now to try and get as much money as possible into the bank.
12:45Where do you want to start then?
12:46I'll start with two.
12:48Release it when you're ready.
12:55It's settled very quickly indeed.
12:57Will that have any effect?
12:59Yes.
13:00Three over.
13:04And one out in the win zone.
13:06That's another £50.
13:07So, you've got one last counter.
13:09Are you going to stick with drop zone two?
13:12No, I'm going to go for three this time, please.
13:16When you're ready, Vicky, release your last counter.
13:21Last counter from this round.
13:24Will it have any effect?
13:25It has.
13:27It's a fair few gone over the tipping point.
13:29Any more money to come?
13:30Absolutely.
13:31So, with your last counter, you managed to get another £300.
13:34Six came out of the machine, adds another £350 into your bank,
13:38which takes you to £450.
13:40Well done, Vicky.
13:41Well played indeed.
13:42So, the final score is at the end of round one.
13:45In first place with £550 is Chad.
13:48In second place with £450 is Vicky.
13:51In third place with £400 is Tom.
13:54So, Marilyn, I'm afraid we have to say goodbye to you.
13:57Thanks for playing.
13:58Thank you very much.
13:59I'm afraid your tipping point has come.
14:01Chad, Vicky and Tom have all survived to play round two.
14:04Now they will face 30 seconds of general knowledge questions each.
14:08Each correct answer will give them a chance to earn some cash.
14:11Once again, the player with the least amount of money at the end of the round will be eliminated.
14:15Chad, you're in the lead after round one.
14:18You've got £550 in your bank, which means you have a choice.
14:21Do you want to go first or would you like to make one of your opponents play instead?
14:26How do you think the machine's looking?
14:28It's looking sparse in places, but I think I'll go first.
14:32OK.
14:33Chad, you've decided to play.
14:34You've got 30 seconds to answer as many questions as you can.
14:37Every correct answer will give you a chance to drop a counter into the machine.
14:41Are you ready?
14:42I'm ready, Ben.
14:43Your 30 seconds starts now.
14:45Which classic board game features the characters Miss Scarlet and Colonel Mustard?
14:49Cluedo.
14:50That's correct.
14:51Which English county is traditionally known as the Garden of England?
14:54Kent.
14:55That's correct.
14:56An American college, a sophomore would be in which year of a four-year course?
15:01First year.
15:02It's a second.
15:03Which British singer had Christmas hits with Mistletoe and Wine and the Millennium Prayer?
15:07Cliff Richard.
15:08That's correct.
15:09What are the seeds of a horse chestnut tree commonly called?
15:12Acorns.
15:13They're conkers.
15:14Who replaced Terry Wogan as the host of radio...
15:16You're out of time.
15:17You managed to get three correct.
15:19So three counters to drop into our machine.
15:22Where are you going to go first, Chad?
15:23Which drop zone would you like?
15:24I'll try number...
15:26Drop zone number four, please, Ben.
15:28Can we fire up drop zone four, please?
15:30First time it's been used in the game today.
15:33Chad, release your counter when you're ready.
15:39Need it to settle flat to cause the most damage.
15:44Good position.
15:45I hope so.
15:46Every counter that comes out is worth 50 pounds to you.
15:50Three made it onto the second shelf.
15:52Oh!
15:54I thought that was going to be more effective.
15:57I hope so, Ben.
15:59In that case, I'll try number four again, Ben.
16:02OK.
16:03The second of your three counters, Chad.
16:05Release it when you're ready.
16:11Very quick.
16:12Settle very quickly.
16:13In the same position.
16:16Dropped.
16:17Are they going to flip?
16:18They need to flip.
16:19No!
16:22They flipped at the last minute and caused some damage.
16:24Well done, Chad.
16:26So, four counters.
16:27That's 200 pounds into your bank, Chad.
16:30Well done.
16:31You've got one last counter.
16:33You're going to stick on that side of the machine or go somewhere else.
16:37Hmm.
16:38I'll try number three this time around, Ben.
16:42Release away.
16:48Last counter.
16:49Settled in the middle.
16:53Two over the top.
16:55Last chance.
16:56And another two counters make it into the winning zone.
17:01That's another £100 to add to the £200 you had previously.
17:06Which means, at the end of your go, that's £300, Chad, into your bank.
17:09Well done.
17:10That takes your total up to £850.
17:12So, Vicky, you were second coming into this round.
17:15Mm-hmm.
17:16You get the choice.
17:17Would you like to make Tom play before you?
17:18Or do you think our machine's looking like she's going to pay out?
17:22She's looking quite good at the moment, so I think I'm going to play.
17:25OK.
17:26Well, hopefully we can make your 30 seconds count and we can get you some more money into the bank.
17:31OK, Vicky, the time starts now.
17:34What does the U stand for in the acronym UFO?
17:38Unidentified.
17:39Correct.
17:40The country residence of the President of the United States is known as Camp what?
17:44David.
17:45It is.
17:46In 1804, which European country did Haiti win its independence from?
17:49Pass.
17:50France.
17:51The film Comedies Whiskey Galore and The Lavender Hill Mob were produced by which London studios?
17:55MGM.
17:56It was Ealing.
17:57Which grain is the Japanese alcoholic drink sake made from?
18:01Pass.
18:02It was rice.
18:03In 2011, the actress Rachel...
18:04Oh.
18:05It went out of time.
18:06However, you managed to get two correct.
18:08OK.
18:09So you've got two counters to drop into the machine.
18:11You need 450 to take you through to the next round.
18:15Where are you going to go, Vicky?
18:17I'm going to go for number three.
18:21So when you're ready, release away.
18:24Here it comes.
18:29Settled nicely.
18:30No.
18:31Nine.
18:32Nine counters with these two to guarantee you're going through.
18:36Is everything going?
18:37Oh!
18:38Oh!
18:39Just on the tipping points.
18:40Not far enough.
18:43Your last one coming up now, Vicky.
18:45Are you going to stick with drop zone three?
18:46I am going to stick with drop zone three.
18:48This is really important now.
18:55Much quicker drop.
18:57Will it be effective?
18:59Yes.
19:00I need one.
19:02Is that going to be enough?
19:03Oh!
19:04One more's dropped down.
19:05I'm not sure that's going to help because it's riding up on the ones in front.
19:08No.
19:09Nothing.
19:10Unfortunately, Vicky, your two counters brought you absolutely nothing.
19:15You need Tom to do a huge favour now.
19:17I know.
19:18I do.
19:19Let's see what happens.
19:20So, Tom, you're the last person to play.
19:22I am.
19:23You've got 30 important seconds in front of you now.
19:25You need at least two counters to guarantee safe passage into the next round.
19:30OK.
19:31Time starts now.
19:33According to the Hey Diddle Diddle nursery rhyme, what ran away with the spoon?
19:37Pass.
19:38The dish.
19:39The constellation called Ursa Major is also known as the Great What?
19:42There.
19:43In May 2012, the Olympic torch relay began in which English county?
19:47Cornwall.
19:48It was Cornwall.
19:49Which female modern artist once famously exhibited her unmade bed?
19:52Tracy Emin.
19:53Correct.
19:54In the sitcom Only Fools and Horses, what is the first name of Boise's wife?
19:58Pass.
19:59It was Marlene.
20:00In 2006, Belfast City Airport was renamed after which...
20:04Just out of time.
20:06Three counters, Tom.
20:07Yeah.
20:08You've got three counters to get yourself into the next round.
20:10Where would you like to start, Tom?
20:12I think it's going to have to be number three.
20:14It's been a very busy drop zone.
20:15We're going to fire it up again.
20:16Fire up drop zone three, please.
20:19Release your counter when you're ready.
20:25I think he set it up nicely for you.
20:26Can you take advantage?
20:27The first one's over the top.
20:29You only need two to guarantee a place.
20:32You've done it.
20:33With your first counter, you've got yourself £250,
20:36which means you're guaranteed to go through to the next round.
20:38Congratulations.
20:40You've got as much money in your bank as possible.
20:42Where are you going to go with your second counter?
20:44I think number four, please, Ben.
20:47Let's see if we can make this a lucrative drop.
20:54There's not much sitting there.
20:57You need to add to your total.
20:58Anything go?
20:59Yep.
21:00Flipped one.
21:01Can it nudge something into the winning zone?
21:04Not yet.
21:05You've got one left, Tom.
21:06Are you going to persist on that side?
21:08I think I am, yep.
21:14Very quickly.
21:16Oh, it's not settled well at all.
21:18Maybe went a bit too fast, Tom.
21:20You rushed it a touch.
21:21Fortunately, though, you'd done enough damage with your previous counter.
21:24So we add that £250 to your total, which means at the end of round two, Chad has £850, Tom has £650.
21:33Vicky, I'm afraid your tipping point has come.
21:35Thanks for playing.
21:37As it stands, Chad, you've got £850, but Tom, you're still in it, just the £200 less with £650.
21:44I'm going to ask six questions, which will alternate between you, three each.
21:48On your question, you can either try to answer it yourself, or you can pass it to your opponent to answer.
21:53If you get a question right, then you get a chance to play the machine.
21:57But if you give me a wrong answer, your opponent gets the turn.
22:01Whoever has the most amount of money at the end of the round is today's winner, and will play for the £10,000 jackpot.
22:07Chad, you're in the lead.
22:09So yet again, you get to choose whether you'd like to face the machine first, or put Tom in the chair.
22:15How do you think she's looking?
22:16Once again, sparse in areas, and...
22:19Generous in others.
22:20Yes, exactly.
22:22So, once again, I'll go first.
22:24OK, good luck to both of you.
22:26Chad, here comes your first question.
22:31In 2002, which boy band member joined the cast of Coronation Street to play the role of Kieran McCarthy?
22:42Chad, you can pass this over.
22:44If Tom gets it wrong, you keep the counter.
22:46I'm going to have to pass it over.
22:48You're going to pass it over to Tom.
22:49So, Tom, this is where your boy band knowledge comes to the fore.
22:53Any ideas?
22:55I haven't got a clue, Ben.
22:57I will go for...
23:01Duncan James.
23:02Duncan James from blue.
23:04Is that the correct answer?
23:07It's not.
23:08It was a decent guess, Tom, considering he had no idea.
23:10He's in a boy band.
23:11It was Keith Duffy from Boy Zone.
23:13That's a very, very good pass.
23:15Either way, by Tom getting that wrong, you get to drop a counter into our machine.
23:20So, you can extend your lead now.
23:22Where are you going to go?
23:23Once again, Ben, I think I'll try drop zone four.
23:26Okay, let's fire up drop zone four, please, for Chad.
23:32Release your counter when you're ready.
23:38Nice quick drop.
23:40Into the middle.
23:42Big overhang at that point.
23:45Is it going to send it over?
23:47Two.
23:48Will they flip?
23:49They have.
23:52That's two counters.
23:53£50 each.
23:54£100 to you, Chad.
23:55Well done.
23:57That money goes into your bank, which now sits at £950.
24:00Very healthy indeed.
24:02Tom, pressure back on you.
24:03Still a lot of questions left.
24:04You're absolutely right, Tom.
24:05There are plenty of questions to go.
24:07A little bit of fighting talk.
24:08Let's have your first one.
24:11Which tennis player has won the most Wimbledon ladies' singles titles?
24:17Tom, do you want to play this question or do you want to pass it to Chad?
24:20I think I'll play it, Ben.
24:21Okay, we're going to play it.
24:22Which tennis player has won the most Wimbledon ladies' singles titles?
24:25Your answer is...
24:27Martina Navratilova.
24:28Is that the correct answer?
24:31It is.
24:33Congratulations.
24:35You get your chance to drop a counter into the machine.
24:37Where are you going to go?
24:39Number four, please, Ben.
24:41Tom, release your counter when you're ready.
24:47Here comes seven counters needed to take the lead.
24:52We've got two over.
24:53This could be promising.
24:55Well done.
24:56You managed to get six counters.
24:58Fantastic stuff.
24:59That's another £300.
25:01And that means you've drawn level with Chad.
25:03But as you can see, it can all turn on the drop of a counter.
25:07Chad, we come to you.
25:08Your second question.
25:11What was the first name of the late Queen Mother?
25:15Do you fancy playing this one?
25:16Have a look at Tom.
25:17Do you think he knows about the royals?
25:19I'm sure Tom knows about the royals.
25:22Um...
25:23I'm going to have to pause.
25:24So, Tom, I need an answer.
25:25If you get it wrong, Chad puts the counter into the machine.
25:29I think I'm going to have to say Elizabeth.
25:33I can't think of anything.
25:35Is that a pure guess?
25:37Educated guess.
25:38Sometimes royals are named the same thing, but...
25:41Is the answer Elizabeth?
25:43Well done.
25:48You're absolutely right.
25:49I have no idea.
25:51They name each other the same names for generations.
25:53Yeah.
25:54If you get a drop of a counter into the machine,
25:56which drop zone would you like?
25:58I might take a shot at number one.
26:00Okay.
26:02When you're ready, Tom, release your counter.
26:10If anything comes off, you'll take the lead.
26:12It's going to settle nicely in the middle.
26:15Will that be a good shot?
26:18Oh, yes.
26:21There's been a fair few.
26:22Well done.
26:23So, Chad passed you that question.
26:24You certainly made it count.
26:25That's four that you've got into the winning zone.
26:27£200, Tom.
26:29You take the lead.
26:30Your bank now sits at a very, very attractive £1,150.
26:35Back to you with your second question.
26:37Assuming they're not missing any, how many teeth should an adult human have?
26:46Will Chad know if you pass?
26:50I'm going to pass.
26:51What's your thoughts, Chad?
26:52It's just a pure guess, but I'm going to try 48.
26:57Okay.
26:58If it's 48, you've won that counter.
27:05No.
27:06Not quite 48.
27:07That would be quite a mouth of teeth.
27:09Okay.
27:1032.
27:11Good move, Tom.
27:12Good move, Tom.
27:13It was well played to pass that one over to Chad.
27:15Yep.
27:16Where are you going to go?
27:17I'll give four a go.
27:19Release your counter when you're ready.
27:24It's really generous.
27:25It's landed in the middle.
27:28Will it go over the edge?
27:31Yes!
27:32That's one.
27:33Will it extend your lead?
27:34No!
27:36Okay.
27:37Just one question left each.
27:40Your final question, Chad.
27:43What kind of animal was Laika, the first animal to orbit the Earth?
27:48It's a dog.
27:50You seem pretty confident.
27:52Hmm.
27:53Yeah.
27:54Well, yes, I'm quite confident about that.
27:56Was Laika a dog?
28:02It was.
28:03She went up in Sputnik 2.
28:06Could be your last chance to get into the finale.
28:09Okay, I'll try number three again.
28:11You're desperate to make number three work, aren't you?
28:14Definitely.
28:15You put a lot of hard work into it.
28:16Will she finally pay out?
28:17Can we fire her up?
28:18Drop zone three, please.
28:20Chad, release when you're ready.
28:26A bit of a ghost drop.
28:28Has that positioned itself in the right place?
28:31Oh, it's ridden up.
28:34This might not be what you wanted.
28:36I know.
28:39No, Chad.
28:40Nothing.
28:42Agonisingly close.
28:44Wow.
28:45Chad, so I'm afraid your last counter came to nothing.
28:47Tom, you need to give me the correct answer to this question.
28:52Yeah.
28:53If you do, you'll be going through to the next round.
28:56Your final question in this round.
29:02What colour is the leather on the benches in the House of Commons?
29:06That's not a bad question for a politics student, is it, Tom?
29:10Of all the questions.
29:13Oh, I've got to think now.
29:14Don't get the tea mixed up.
29:16I'm fairly sure it's green, and I think it's green because it's meant to be a colour to calm them down when they get a bit rowdy.
29:23Is the answer green?
29:31It is!
29:32You're absolutely right.
29:33Well done, Tom.
29:34Well done, Tom.
29:35Congratulations.
29:36You've secured your place in the jackpot finale.
29:38Let's see if we can get you some more money into that bank before we do that.
29:43Now then, where are you going to go?
29:45I think it has to be number three, Ben.
29:48Tom, release away.
29:53The last counter.
29:56Will this be the one that pays out?
30:01Is it going to go over the tipping point?
30:04Still nothing!
30:06So, at the end of that round, Tom, you remain on £1,150.
30:11Chad, you have at £950, so I'm afraid we have to say goodbye to you.
30:15Thanks for playing.
30:17I'm afraid your tipping point has come.
30:19Four players came to take on the machine, now just one remains.
30:22Well done, Tom.
30:24You're quite surprised to be here, then.
30:25I am, actually.
30:26The other contestants were really nice and seemed really intelligent,
30:29so I'm really shocked I've got through.
30:30You're doing an interesting internship at the moment, I understand.
30:32I'm going to be interning at the Houses of Parliament with my MP,
30:35which should be a really good experience.
30:37Hopefully don't embarrass myself.
30:41Something you'd like to do in the future, though?
30:42Yeah, definitely.
30:43Definitely wouldn't mind working in politics or parliament,
30:45but it's a long way down the line yet.
30:47Well, you've done brilliantly to get this far.
30:50You've also got yourself £1,150.
30:52But right now, we're going to play for today's £10,000 jackpot.
30:56In a few moments, I'm going to ask you to put our gold jackpot counter into the machine.
31:01Quite simply, all you have to do to win £10,000 is get it out again.
31:05And here's how you're going to do it.
31:07I'm going to ask you six questions, each on a given topic.
31:10For each topic, you can choose to play one, two or three counters to put into the machine.
31:16The more counters you play for, the harder your questions are going to be.
31:19But the more counters you win, the better chance you have of getting that jackpot out of the machine.
31:25If you don't succeed, you'll still build up cash through every other counter that drops for you in the end game.
31:31But it's when we desperately want you to get away with the £10,000.
31:35First thing we need to do is release that precious jackpot counter.
31:38Now, where do you think you're going to be most likely to drop it in order to get it out again?
31:44I think I might go for number two. I'm not going to number three. She's had enough for today, I think.
31:51She's played very tricky today, hasn't she?
31:53She has, so I think I'm going to go for number two, Ben.
31:55OK, let's fire up drop zone number two.
32:00Tom, release that jackpot counter when you're ready.
32:05There it goes. It's fallen very nicely.
32:13And some of the counters have gone over. They all count.
32:18So you've got yourself five out of the machine straight away, which is £250, which goes into your bank.
32:24It now sits at £1,400. You haven't answered anything yet.
32:27No, it's great fun.
32:28It is, isn't it? OK, Tom, let's have a look at today's six endgame topics. They are musicals, history, food and drink, celebrities, UK and boxing.
32:40Any of those you like the look of? I think it's going to help. Wow.
32:43While we're talking, we've had more into the winning zone. That's £150.
32:48Easiest £150 I've ever made, I think.
32:50It's great, this game, isn't it? It's brilliant.
32:52OK. So as the machine keeps trying to pay out as much money as it can, we need you to choose a category to start with. So where are we going to start?
32:59Erm, I think I'll start with musicals and get it out of the way. Musicals, one you're not too keen on. How many turns do you want to go for?
33:07I'm not very likely to know anyway, so I'll go for two.
33:10Here was your musical question for two turns with the counters.
33:14Who composed the score for Billy Elliot, the musical? Was it Brian May, Elton John or Paul McCartney?
33:24I haven't seen it. I would like to see it. Do you know of it?
33:28I do know of it, yeah. I've gone past it on the bus a few times, I think. I'm going to go for Elton John.
33:35Is Elton John the correct answer? It is! Well done. So let's start. Where are we going to put that first counter?
33:44It's got to be number two. Let's make it count. Release it when you're ready.
33:51Here it goes. You need it to sit on the other side. It's not quite following correctly, has it?
33:56No. Everything that comes out is worth £50, though.
34:01Well done, Tom. Didn't quite work for the jackpot counter, but you have got yourself another £100.
34:06Yep. You've got one more counter here. Let's see if we can get it closer to that jackpot.
34:11Drop zone two? Yep, try it again.
34:15Release it when you're ready.
34:17That's a bit of a ghost drop. That could work out beautifully.
34:27Just where you wanted it, Tom. Pleased with that one?
34:29Very.
34:30Need to do some damage now.
34:33Oh, yes!
34:35We've got three more off over the tipping point.
34:38One more into the win zone.
34:40Your bank total goes up to £1,700.
34:44Let's choose your next category and how many turns you'd like.
34:47I think I'll go for food and drink.
34:49We're going to go with food and drink and how many turns?
34:51I think two again, please.
34:53OK. Here's your food and drink question.
34:55Curacao is the liqueur flavoured with the peel of which fruit?
35:01Is it lemons, limes or oranges?
35:04I'm assuming as a student you know all about cocktails.
35:08Yep. I've had it. It's vile. It didn't end nicely.
35:12Let's see if we can make it work for you today, then.
35:14It didn't taste orangey.
35:16Definitely no oranges.
35:17I'm going to go for limes, but I'm really not sure.
35:21If you're right, you're going to have two more goes at the machine.
35:25Is the answer limes?
35:28No, it wasn't limes.
35:31It was oranges.
35:33OK. Let's move on to your next category.
35:36You need to start trying to shift that jackpot counter.
35:38Where are you going to go?
35:39I think I'll go for boxing now.
35:40OK. Boxing and how many turns at boxing?
35:45I think I'm going to have to go for two.
35:47Let's have a look at your boxing question.
35:50Which American boxer is the subject of the 1980 film Raging Bull?
35:56Is it Jake LaMotta, Mike Tyson or Sugar Ray Leonard?
36:02Erm...
36:04I'm not sure, but I'm...
36:07Do you recognise any of those boxers?
36:09Yeah, I recognise Mike Tyson and Sugar Ray Leonard, but I have no idea who Jake LaMotta is.
36:14Mike Tyson is a bit...
36:16Bullish, maybe, but I'm...
36:18I'll go for Mike Tyson.
36:21Fingers crossed it's Mike Tyson.
36:23If it is, you get two more goes at the machine.
36:26Is Mike Tyson the right answer?
36:30It's not Mike Tyson.
36:32It was Jake LaMotta.
36:34OK, not to worry.
36:35You can still do it.
36:36A maximum of nine counters can go into the machine.
36:40If you get all the hardest questions, Tom.
36:42Erm...
36:43I'll go for celebrities for three, I think.
36:45OK.
36:46So, the hardest question on celebrities.
36:50In March 2012, which celebrity became the first Twitter user to reach 20 million followers?
36:58Was it Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga, Madonna?
37:03I'm pretty sure I know this one.
37:06I think it's Lady Gaga.
37:08OK.
37:09You desperately need it to be Lady Gaga.
37:10If it is, you get three goes of trying to get that jackpot counter out of the machine.
37:14Is the answer Lady Gaga?
37:19Yes!
37:21If we can, we need to shift that jackpot counter over the edge of that top shelf.
37:26Yeah.
37:27Where are you going to go?
37:28It's a bit of a quandary.
37:30I'll try two again.
37:32Release it when you're ready.
37:35Come on now.
37:37It's bouncing.
37:39It just rolled away.
37:41I thought it was going to look good.
37:42See how it settles.
37:48Will we get a peripheral push?
37:51Nothing!
37:53It's OK, because they're stacking up near it.
37:55Yeah.
37:56You've got two counters left to go.
37:57Yeah.
37:58Sticking with drop zone two?
37:59Yeah, I think so.
38:00Tom, when you're ready, release the counter.
38:02Again!
38:07Fallen right in the middle.
38:12Edged it towards the tipping point.
38:14Can we get something out?
38:15We could do with a few.
38:17Five more fell into the winning zone.
38:19Yeah.
38:20So another £250.
38:21You've got one more counter here.
38:23It has shifted, hasn't it?
38:24It has.
38:25But not really very helpfully.
38:27No.
38:28So, where are you going to go?
38:29I think I'll stick with two for now, please.
38:31OK.
38:32Let's drop the zone two.
38:34Release it when you're ready.
38:38Where's it going?
38:39Oh, it's gone left.
38:40Will it roll?
38:42How is it going to impact?
38:43It sat nicely.
38:44We need to edge it over the tipping point if we can.
38:49Nothing!
38:50Oh, Tom.
38:51So frustrating.
38:52So, you've got two categories left.
38:55Which categories should we go with next?
38:56Uh, history, please.
38:57OK.
38:58For three.
38:59Need to get this right.
39:03Which navigator was the first European to cross the Pacific Ocean?
39:09Christopher Columbus, Ferdinand Magellan, or Vasco de Gama?
39:13I don't think it was Columbus, because I'm pretty sure he crossed the Atlantic first,
39:16so he would have been a bit busy.
39:17Um, I haven't heard of Vasco de Gama, but I have heard of Ferdinand Magellan,
39:23so I will go with Magellan, please, Ben.
39:25We desperately need this to be the right answer.
39:28If it is, you get three more goes at the machine.
39:32Is that the correct answer?
39:36It was!
39:38Great process of elimination.
39:39Well done, Tom.
39:40Three more counters to drop in the machine.
39:42Straight down, number two.
39:44I think it's going to have to be...
39:47Let's see if we can shift that jackpot counter over the tipping point
39:50and onto the lower shelf.
39:55Oh, we desperately needed to land on the other side.
40:00Can we get some money?
40:02Everything that drops is £50.
40:05That's another three out, another £150.
40:08Yeah.
40:09You've got two counters left to go.
40:10Yeah.
40:11Sticking with drop zone two?
40:12Yeah, I think so.
40:17Need it to fall to the right.
40:21This could be lucrative though.
40:23Oh, it's even ridden up.
40:25You're loading the shelf, but we're not getting anything out, Tom.
40:27No.
40:28The last counter from this subject.
40:31I might go for number three, because it might push it this way a bit, but it's worth a try.
40:37Okay, Tom.
40:39Let's make this one count.
40:40Are you ready?
40:41Oh, we might get some lateral movement.
40:52Nothing.
40:53She lured you in like she has all game.
40:55She did. I shouldn't have trusted her.
40:56Right.
40:57We have one category left, which is the UK.
41:01How many counters are you going to go for?
41:02It's got to be three.
41:03Okay.
41:05On which Scottish island is the town of Tobey Maury?
41:10Is it coal, mull or sky?
41:14Any that you think you can rule out?
41:16No.
41:17I've been to Edinburgh, but that's it.
41:20Going to be a complete guess?
41:22Yeah, I haven't heard of coal, but I've heard of sky and mull, so I think...
41:28I like the sound of sky. I'll go for sky.
41:30We're going to go with sky because we like how it sounds.
41:33If we're going to get any chance of getting that jackpot out, we really, really need this to be correct.
41:38Is the answer sky?
41:44It's not.
41:46It was mull.
41:47Unfortunately, you haven't done enough to shift that jackpot counter.
41:52You've got £2,100 in the bank.
41:54But, Tom, it's not all over.
41:56You could still be leaving here with £10,000.
41:59I'm going to give you one last chance to leave with that jackpot.
42:02As things stand, you've won £2,100.
42:05You can walk away with that money right now, or you can trade it for three final turns in the hope of winning the jackpot.
42:13Everything else in the machine will be worthless.
42:16So you're going to be leaving with £10,000 or nothing.
42:19It's a huge decision for you now, Tom.
42:21What does £2,100 mean?
42:24What would £10,000 mean?
42:26£10,000 would be amazing, but £2,100 is an incredible amount of money.
42:32I've had a really good day.
42:35I don't think the machine likes me today.
42:37I'm going to take the money, Ben.
42:39Tom's going to take the money.
42:40Congratulations, Tom.
42:41I think that's the right decision.
42:43So Tom leaves with £2,100.
42:45Join us next time when the fate of four more players will hang in the balance on Tipping Point.
42:51Goodbye.
