00:00We got terrible news.
00:01C.J. Garner-Johnson, the safety, new safety for the Texans,
00:05down with an injury, had to be carted off the field,
00:07had to be helped into the building.
00:10Definitely a lot of somber vibes.
00:12You could even hear it down line out there at West Virginia.
00:16And so with all of that being the backdrop,
00:18in addition, though, to a practice that still went on
00:21and, you know, scrimmages that happened with a lot of the starters,
00:25D'Amico Ryans talked after practice to the Assemble Media.
00:28This is what it sounded like.
00:30Of course, it's, you know, it's heartbreaking
00:32when you see a guy go down on the field like that
00:34and doesn't get up quickly.
00:36So I'm always, you know, nervous as a head coach.
00:39Anytime I see anybody hit the ground, it's tough to watch.
00:44So we'll see, you know, we'll evaluate C.J., see where he is,
00:48but no update at this time.
00:49When you get the team together, what are you trying to do there?
00:52I mean, you guys look like you're not ready for him,
00:55but then it looks like you've got to continue working.
00:58Yeah, that's the situation, right?
01:00It's, again, it's heartfelt because we're a team.
01:04We're all in this together.
01:05And you see the emotion from our team, like we care about each other.
01:08I've been on teams where you just, hey, coaches just move the ball up
01:12and you keep practicing.
01:13Well, I think that's very insensitive.
01:15So we're going to take the time there for guys to take a knee, pray for them, all right?
01:20Just make sure they send their teammate off well and just wish them well,
01:24make sure we're saying the prayers because that's what it's about, right?
01:28It's about that moment.
01:29For me, make sure everybody, we care for each other.
01:34And it's not that we throw up or just toss around.
01:36Like, we truly care about each other.
01:38So that's why you see if something like that happens in practice,
01:40we're going to take our time to let everybody take their time.
01:44Then we have to hit reset.
01:45It's a tough message, but we have to hit reset.
01:47And then we have to get back going.
01:49What's up, Scott?
01:53I was just going to ask Coach Lynn, I know that you all want to be getting ready for,
01:58you know, to play your first preseason game just in Minnesota.
02:00What do you see out there today?
02:02It looks like Miles Bryant is up.
02:06Miles, he shows up every day.
02:08Miles, he does a lot for us.
02:11He's a utility guy.
02:13He can play on the outside at corner, nickel, safety, moves around a lot of positions.
02:17We saw a really nice punt return from him today.
02:20He's just all over the place.
02:21Smart player that he's – I love to work with him because he's very smart.
02:26You can put him anywhere, and he knows every position on the defense.
02:29So I'm very thankful to have Miles, you know, with us here.
02:33He's just – he's a very valuable piece of what we're doing.
02:35I'm going to ask how much will the starters play on Saturday?
02:39We'll have a handful of guys who won't see action in the game.
02:43It'll be a mix.
02:44Everybody's kind of on their own plan.
02:46But we'll have a handful of guys who won't see time at all.
02:49Then we'll have a certain group of guys who are limited.
02:51So it's just a lot of different guys in different categories there.
02:54But you'll see most of our young guys playing versus the Vikings.
02:57What do you want to see – what do you want to see on Saturday?
03:03Yeah, on Saturday we play the Vikings.
03:05What I want to see is our guys just go out
03:07and see who can go play when the lights are on.
03:11Like, guys do it.
03:12Sometimes in practice you guys show up even better in the game,
03:18and some guys don't show up as well.
03:20So I just want to see who shows up when it's game time.
03:22I've seen them practice now for several weeks,
03:25and I'm pretty sure I know what guys are capable of doing.
03:28But sometimes you always have those guys who surprise you in preseason game.
03:32And that's the exciting part about preseason,
03:34seeing those young guys shine bright when they get their moments.
03:37So I'm looking for guys to go out and have fun, execute.
03:40But most importantly, just play for each other
03:43and finish the game the right way.
03:45Yeah, we'll have a handful of guys who won't play.
03:56What did you make of the offensive line today and how they performed?
03:59It looked like they did pretty good jobs, a couple blitzes.
04:02Yeah.
04:03Yeah, offensive line, I mean, overall these past couple days,
04:06they continue to get better and better and better.
04:08They've done a great job of, you know, picking up some of the pressures,
04:11done a great job just one-on-one protection, passing off games,
04:15working with each other.
04:16I see that progression.
04:17I see the growth in our offensive line,
04:19and I'm excited to see them actually go out and do it against someone else.
04:23But they've done a really great job while we've been here in West Virginia.
04:26Do you have an update on the status of Nick W.
04:28He's been out in the past couple days?
04:29Nick will be fine.
04:31Nick will be back with us pretty soon.
04:33You said the goal of this trip was for the guys to be focused on football
04:38and kind of really lock in on their technique and their details.
04:41Do you feel like you guys could keep that?
04:43Yeah, everything that we set out to accomplish, we got it done here.
04:46Coming to West Virginia, again, pleasant weather.
04:49Our guys were able to lock in, and I saw us get better.
04:54Both sides got better, and it was a lot of positives from us being here.
04:59And just very thankful to everyone who supported us coming out here.
05:02Thankful for all you guys as well coming out here and covering us.
05:06So really appreciative.
05:07It was everything that I thought it would be.
05:09It was everything.
05:09So I'm happy it turned out in a great manner.
05:22It's been pretty – it's kind of like it was the same for me.
05:25I've noticed, like when we were in Cleveland versus here in West Virginia,
05:29what I noticed is guys just continue to get tighter.
05:32Just guys sitting around the meal room just a little bit longer,
05:35hanging out where I really know where to go.
05:36And that's what I saw in Cleveland as well, guys just hanging out,
05:40just bonding as teammates.
05:41That's the stuff that happens off the field that no one sees.
05:44Everybody wants to talk about or report what happens on the field.
05:47But I truly believe you have to be a tight team.
05:49You have to be connected off the field.
05:51And I've seen that grow from our team.
05:53I've seen us get closer.
05:54I've seen us grow more connected while being here.
05:57And that's all I could have hoped for.
05:59All right.
05:59Thank you, guys.
06:00Here you go.
06:01D'Amico Ryan's head coach of the Houston Texans.
06:03Unfortunately, no update when it comes to C.J. Garner-Johnson.
06:06I mean, that seemed to make sense.
06:08This is not something that they'll approach hastily.
06:11But I imagine at the very worst by tomorrow.
06:14But honestly, I think at some point during the drive,
06:16we'll get some general ideas as to what's happened with C.J.
06:19No update, but you could tell the seriousness of just what they do know.
06:26Even from his voice, he called it heartbreaking and tough to watch.
06:29Yeah, and again, depending on how severe it actually is,
06:35or that he is the only decision maker in this,
06:38but I think that he gave us a little bit of insight as we were talking about,
06:40hey, what is the potential of your next moves if you needed to do something?
06:45When asked about Miles Bryant and the day that he had,
06:48look, he was definitely being complimentary, and he should.
06:51Miles Bryant has been useful.
06:54Miles shows up every day.
06:56He's here.
06:56He is a utility guy.
06:58Mentioned that he could play outside corner, niggle safety.
07:01Smart player, loves working with him, D'Amico said.
07:04It's like when you get that attendance certificate in fifth grade.
07:07Well, I wasn't going to go that far.
07:08You know what I did think about is your feeling on Dubon as utility guy.
07:13Like, that's what it sounded like.
07:14You don't want him.
07:16He's a utility guy, but I don't know if I want him to have to be everyday guy,
07:19which I think speaks to the –
07:20I think that's probably the way that I would look at it.
07:22If you need to fill in for C.J. Garner Johnson for a period of time,
07:26you have the guys that can do that.
07:28If you need a guy who becomes your de facto starter for the remainder of the season,
07:33I don't think that's the answer by any means.
07:35And I think that's where they are.
07:36But by and large, you know, I was pretty, you know,
07:40optimistic about everything I heard from D'Amico today.
07:43I did, you know, just as a note, you know, he said regarding, you know,
07:48who's going to play, who's not going to play on Saturday,
07:51he said a handful would not be playing.
07:53So what is a handful, you know?
07:55Is that four or five?
07:57Yeah, that's a good point.
07:58You know, is it 12?
07:59You know, because a handful would mean – and he said some would be limited as well.
08:04A handful would mean we'll see a lot of guys out there.
08:07I still don't want to see necessarily C.J. Stroud,
08:09but I think we'll see some guys.
08:11Well, he did say most of the young guys will be playing.
08:15We know that, right?
08:16You're really leaning that way.
08:17You probably know C.J. then.
08:18I think so.
08:20And then, you know, also what that points to in some degrees was he was mentioning
08:24how, you know, everybody's on their own timeline,
08:26which is a refrain that we've heard a lot this offseason and headed into the season.
08:30Yeah, definitely talk about C.J. on that one.
08:32Yeah, anybody with some level of general injury concerns,
08:35I think you can make it very clear that they won't be playing.
08:37Like Nick Chubb, which –
08:39Actually, he said Chubb's going to be back.
08:40I think it's more, you know, monitoring and regulating the reps.
08:45How's that hit you, though, with Nick Chubb?
08:46Well, I guess he is coming off an injury.
08:48You don't want to run him too hard.
08:49And he has been running back one without much spelling, obviously,
08:53from the likes of Woody Marks and Jawar Jordan.
08:56Yeah, maybe that's just generally where it is.
08:58But, I mean, the idea that he did not practice yesterday,
09:01even in a walkthrough, kind of caught my attention.
09:03It raised an eyebrow.
09:04It did, but, you know, maybe I'm just being gullible,
09:08but I feel what D'Amico was saying there.
09:12He'll be back.
09:12Don't worry about it.
09:13I feel like they're regulating it.
09:15Now, I will add this.
09:16Like I said, I felt pretty good about what I heard.
09:19How do you feel about the offensive line now?
09:21Because I thought, you know, he was very adamant about progression, growth.
09:25It was a great trip for the offensive line these last two days, et cetera.
09:29I'm not going to sit here and make any proclamations
09:32because I still have serious doubts once they get into real games.
09:36But I do think they did click a little better.
09:39No, I mean, that's an encouragement.
09:41And maybe the specific thing that they talk about West Virginia
09:44was maybe that's the place where you stood to gain even the most
09:47was the offensive line,
09:48especially as their jobs are the ones of anyone on a football field.
09:55Cohesion.
09:56The idea that they get to be out there in West Virginia
09:58in that kind of bunker-style mentality,
10:00getting an opportunity to get even closer with one another.
10:04It feels like the defense very much so in what we were talking about.
10:06Hey, everybody's out here working out.
10:08And, you know, Nick Cassero talking about that.
10:10Even before we get to OTAs and minicamp,
10:12I'm not saying that that did not involve offense,
10:14but that felt very much like a defense-leaning kind of thing.
10:18I think this is where the offense even finds a way to congeal even more.
10:21And, look, it seems like it's paying some dividends.
10:24Of course, it remains to be seen when they're actually blocking other teams,
10:26which I think will be interesting with the Vikings,
10:29especially if the Vikings maybe drop some games whatsoever,
10:33any whatsoever, or the simulated pressures.
10:34Even just some basic stuff.
10:35That Brian Flores is known for.
10:38But the idea that he went as far as to not just say
10:41that the O-line has gotten better and better,
10:42that they did a great job picking up pressure
10:44and passing off games.
10:48Yeah.
10:48That was like, okay, these are –
10:50That's what you want.
10:51That's the start.
10:52Yeah.
10:52Maybe that's just a level of, you know, reaction from last year
10:56where that was a clear issue for them.
10:58But the idea that, hey, they're finding ways to not just be solid,
11:01protecting, but also picking up some of the more advanced things
11:03or some of the things that gave you trouble last year
11:05as a highlight to the progression that they've made.
11:08And then one more thing, and some people might think it's a little hokey.
11:11I don't even know where you fall on this, to be honest.
11:14Maybe you've said it and I don't remember.
11:16I very much believe in getting away, staying in a dorm or a hotel,
11:23hanging out, going to the restaurant together,
11:26walking around that facility.
11:27We've been there, you know, walking around that facility,
11:29which is, you know, just – it's kind of all self-enclosed
11:32and self-sustained there.
11:35There's workout facilities, which I don't think they need to work out,
11:38but there's things you can do.
11:41Who on the team is most likely to just go to the hotel gym?
11:45Will Anderson.
11:46But I'm saying, like, I'm very much a believer in that makes you a better team.
11:51100%.
11:51Like, look, it can't hurt.
11:54And I think a lot of us have been on the work trip.
11:57Hell, I think the Super Bowl trip served as some of that for us.
11:59Like, you just get to know people on a different level
12:02and they become more human.
12:03And, look, especially in football, but in a lot of different places,
12:06you're inclined to go a little bit further if you have a level of emotional attachment
12:10to who you got over there.
12:11And it seems like, you know, football inherently, the messaging is always there.
12:16We're a family and everything.
12:17It's another thing to act like it and have that real experience
12:21that makes it feel like a family.
12:22You got time in a different way than we were just clocking
12:25and punching the clock together.
12:26And I think that that's why, to some degree,
12:29I think that the defense has been really good.
12:31I have a feeling that that will help them be a better team.
12:34And I love that D'Amico Ryan is not just, you know,
12:37he mentioned it at the top of that.
12:39It's not just words for him.
12:41It is actions.
12:42As much as you know you have to turn the page when you have an injury
12:45like the C.J. Garner-Johnson or even the Keontae Hamilton,
12:47that he takes the time to care for not just, you know, hey,
12:50we need to get the job done.
12:51But, hey, we are trying to foster an environment where you care about the next guy.
12:56And so we will take time to make sure that we have adequate opportunity
12:59to care about that guy before we have to get back to him.
13:02And even D'Amico had a little bit of a drive-by on Chip Kelly.
13:04Did you catch that figure?
13:05I know you did.
13:06Yeah, yeah.
13:07I was wondering who he was talking about because he did.
13:09It was Chip Kelly, I bet.
13:10Yeah, because he was talking about the injury to C.J. Garner.
13:15He said, I've been on teams.
13:16I've been on teams where they just keep rolling.
13:19Yeah.
13:20I guess pretty much if somebody gets hurt, they just keep going.
13:23Practice don't really stop.
13:25And that's what's tough about, like, hey.
13:27That had to be Chip Kelly, right?
13:28It had to be.
13:29Hopefully he has learned a little bit differently.
13:30Cuvier can't do that.
13:32Oh, hell no.
13:32Nah.
13:33And that's what's tough about the next man up mentality because, you know,
13:36it's right.
13:36Like, you need somebody to step into this role,
13:38but you don't want to be callous with it.
13:40And so I do appreciate that they're threading that needle.
13:42Maybe that's a little too overly sentimental.
13:45There we go.
13:46There we go.
13:46But I do think that that matters, especially when you're, like,
13:49it's a training camp.
13:51It's one thing for a game and all that stuff,
13:54and you've got to stay focused.
13:55But we're talking about practice, dog.
13:57Not a game.
13:58Not a game.
13:59Yeah.
13:59Nah, man, it's a people business.
14:00It's one of those things that I think we can lose in sports sometimes,
14:02especially for those of us that like numbers and, you know, figures and stuff.
14:05The human element.
14:06It's a people business, man.
14:08Yeah.
14:08And so I'm glad to have a head coach that understands that.
