00:00Procene Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome is raising red flags among agriculture officials.
00:07While authorities stress that pork remains safe for human consumption,
00:12agriculture specialist Riyad Mohamed is urging farmers to exercise vigilance.
00:18He says early detection is key and encourages anyone noticing unusual symptoms in their livestock
00:24to contact the Ministry of Agriculture immediately.
00:27But make sure and call the Ministry and give them the assistance that they need.
00:31Be cooperative because we don't want this thing to get out of hand
00:35and for us to be internationally flagged as one of the countries that we cannot export a particular product.
00:41It will damage our international trade and image as well.
00:45He shares the symptoms farmers should look out for.
00:48Some of the symptoms would have been like reproductive failure, pneumonia,
00:52which is the inflammation of the lung and increased susceptibility to secondary bacterial infection.
00:58But more of the clinical signs, what would farmers try to see is reproductive failure in their cells
01:04and respiratory disease in young pigs, not only piglets but even pigs as well.
01:09So the reproductive failure is really characterized by infertility, abortion, stillbirths, the birth of weak piglets.
01:17Mohamed says he hopes the disease can be eradicated quickly,
01:21warning that it could have trickle-down effects across the sector.
01:25Things are not getting easier for Trindon and Tobago agricultural sector.
01:28Yeah, you know, so all of these things will have an impact on our sub-sector group.
