00:00I'm digging the Falcons a little bit this year.
00:02And if we take a look from an NFC South perspective,
00:03I do think they're the second best team in that division behind Tampa Bay.
00:07If they play good football and stay injury-free,
00:09they added some components to the defense.
00:11Maybe Raheem Morris catches a clue and learns how to coach on the sideline.
00:14This team might be able to do some damage.
00:15The talent is there where they can win this division.
00:18We just haven't seen it over the past couple of years
00:19actually work its way onto the field.
00:21They also made a major move just an off-season ago to say,
00:25whoa, Kirk Cousins, welcome down, big contracting.
00:28By the way, we're going to draft your replacement right off the bat,
00:32which never made any sense.
00:33It still doesn't make any sense right now.
00:34Kirk Cousins is still on that roster, which doesn't make any sense now.
00:38So let me ask you this question, Joe, on a buy yourself.
00:41The Falcons need to get rid of Kirk Cousins off the roster by any means necessary?
00:48Well, they can't.
00:49I mean, that's the problem because they're saddled with a four-year,
00:53$180 million deal that didn't allow them
00:58to any wiggle room to add anything of value in the off-season here, Donnie.
01:05I mean, they went defense.
01:07They drafted defense this year in the NFL draft.
01:12But, you know, what you see is what you get here
01:14because you have a quarterback who's not even playing
01:17that has all of this salary cap issue going on with him.
01:22He is the ultimate safety net
01:24because you still have a young quarterback going into his sophomore year.
01:29You're still not sure, you know, is he any good?
01:32Is he not any good?
01:33The numbers were up and down last year.
01:35Kirk Cousins is the perfect safety net
01:37unless another team's quarterback gets hurt over the next couple of weeks, Donnie.
01:43And then the phone starts ringing.
01:44And then we'll see, and I'm sure somebody in the front office of Atlanta is going,
01:50well, if that happens, yeah, our asking price could be pretty good
01:55and we might be able to get out from under this contract we gave him.
01:59Yeah, you know what would have been better?
02:00Just don't sign Kirk Cousins.
02:01Draft Michael Penix Jr.
02:02Had $50-plus million to spend on a cornerback, another defensive end,
02:06another wide receiver, what have you.
02:08So this organization, we always remember, Joe, right?
02:10Draft line, best case scenario here.
02:12If Michael Penix never plays, that means it was a great signing.
02:14I'm saying, like, what?
02:15Or if Kirk Cousins is so bad we paid him all that money, we have Michael Penix.
02:19What?
02:20Like, none of that made any sense, and you couldn't sell that to anybody,
02:23and here we are.
02:24But I think you're right about this.
02:26If there's one quarterback or one personality that can say,
02:30I'm getting all of this money, and I won't be a distraction,
02:33and I'll put my best foot forward every single day, it's Kirk Cousins.
02:36You tell most people that are expected starters in the NFL
02:39who were brought to town on a promise they would start
02:41and get paid a lot of money to do that
02:43and then get shoved into the corner by saying, like,
02:45yeah, we'll just play it off because you're not healthy,
02:46and we know you tried to fight through your injury,
02:48but it doesn't matter.
02:48You're not going to play.
02:49Like, Kirk Cousins is that one guy.
02:51And if you are Raheem Morris,
02:53Michael Penix doesn't work out.
02:54At week number three, he goes down with a knee injury.
02:56Not like he hasn't gone down with a knee injury before in his career.
02:58He's been known to have injuries.
03:00That you can bring in Kirk Cousins and salvage your season
03:02and win football games and try to make the playoffs,
03:04that's not a bad option.
03:06They should have never signed Kirk Cousins,
03:08but now that they have him,
03:09they should have gotten rid of him here in the offseason.
03:12They couldn't do that.
03:13You're not just going to cut bait, eat that salary cap,
03:15get nothing back when you go, well, wait a second.
03:17We're one in four.
03:18Michael Penix is playing poorly and injured.
03:20Oh, it would have been nice to have Kirk Cousins come in
03:21and try to right the ship for you.
03:23So for me, I don't think it's off-sell that.
03:25You can't get rid of him at all costs now.
03:27You should have been thinking about that in February, in March,
03:30in April, in May, and in June.
03:32It's too late now for me, Joe.
03:34It's way too late.
03:37I mean, that ship has sailed.
03:38The minute that they made the change last year, that was it.
03:42And quite honestly, I don't blame Kirk Cousins
03:45for what happened there last year.
03:48I am not a big fan of Zach Robinson,
03:50the offensive coordinator in any way, shape, or form.
03:54I don't like his play calling.
03:56I don't like his offense.
03:58I don't think he put Kirk Cousins in a position to succeed
04:01or utilized what he's been really good at his entire career.
04:05So, yeah, I think they're in trouble here, Atlanta,
04:10especially on the defensive side.
04:13They spent, what, three or four draft picks right off the top
04:15on the defensive side, even in free agency.
04:19But what, okay, they're going to play what?
04:22The AFC East, I believe, is on the schedule this year with them.
04:26They have a bye week, week five.
04:30They're going to Berlin in week nine,
04:33and they're not coming out of that with a bye.
04:35They've already had it in week five.
04:38So I don't like the coaching staff,
04:41and I don't like the way the schedule sets up for them.
