Opposition leader Sussan Ley has finished a four-day tour of northern WA, which she says has given her invaluable insights into the issues facing the region and its First Nations communities. But she's continued to dodge questions about a number of motions moved the Liberals' State Council last month, urging the party to move away from net zero targets and Welcomes to Country.
00:00As Susan Lee rebuilds a shattered Liberal Party, she's putting listening front and centre.
00:08These issues on the ground are very complex. We have to work with Aboriginal communities.
00:13That's what I want to do.
00:15Since Friday, she's been exploring the Kimberley meeting with those trying to improve the region,
00:19starting in Kununurra.
00:21What needs to happen more? What is working well?
00:24There's also been a few stops along the way at the pub.
00:27Mariana, how are you? Nice to meet you.
00:29G'day.
00:30And a local business in Wyndham.
00:32What's your name?
00:33Susan Lee.
00:34As well as exploring some of the region's natural wonders before finishing the trip in Broome.
00:39The opposition pitching the visit as a contrast to the Prime Minister's trip to the Garma Festival
00:44where he announced $145 million of funding in clean energy projects and native title reform.
00:50Very little focus on those close the gap targets going in the wrong direction.
00:54But what we heard from people in our travels was that's what they want to focus on.
00:59Ms Lee promoting that message and playing down motions passed by the WA Liberal State Council last month,
01:05calling on the party to cut back on welcome to country ceremonies and use of the Aboriginal flag.
01:11While we've been here, we've talked to people about their everyday lives, about what they want to see from their governments, about the appalling lack of investment in housing.
01:21The leader also steering clear of conflict between Federal Front Bencher Andrew Hastie who backed a motion to ditch a commitment to reaching net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
01:32and Basil Zemplis who supports keeping the target.
01:35Both Basil and Andrew are outstanding colleagues of mine working with me on improving outcomes for Australians.
01:42Susan Lee, Andrew Hastie, everybody related to and part of our Federal Parliamentary team needs to do what they think they need to do.
01:51My job is as the leader of the State Parliamentary team and I'm very comfortable with my position.
01:56Ms Lee has ordered a review into the Coalition's environmental policies.
