00:00Did you think that Trey Lance was going to go out there
00:02and throw multiple touchdown passes?
00:04No, and I heard it all week.
00:06Oh, Jim's going to coach up Trey.
00:09Jim's going to coach up Trey.
00:11It's the preseason.
00:12It's much better than the five-interception performance he had last year
00:15with the Dallas Cowboys.
00:17And that's why he's on his third team in basically six years, right?
00:23Could the possibility of Trey Lance having a resurgence and getting back?
00:29Like, whoa, getting back to where we saw Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold?
00:34It's possible.
00:35I mean, the longer that he's in the league, you would hope that he would develop.
00:38I mean, but I don't expect him to be a starter in any time soon.
00:45Do you?
00:47I mean, come on.
00:49Here's my thing.
00:50Here's my thing with Trey Lance.
00:52I never fully understood why the Niners gave up on him because when you think about all
01:02they poured into him, no, I think the answer to that is probably they just wanted to move
01:06on to Brock Purdy and let Brock Purdy feel comfortable as the guy for that organization.
01:13But here is the interesting thing about the quarterback position, and I think when you also tie it
01:22into some of the college exits due to the COVID rules, right?
01:28Trey Lance is literally younger than Bo Nix.
01:33Yes.
01:34That is wild because I think the people who are in on Denver, I don't know if you are one of
01:42them, but the folks who will be in on the Broncos this year will be talking about a year
01:46two leap for Bo Nix, how Bo Nix has time to get better.
01:51And I'm not saying Bo Nix doesn't have time to get better.
01:54And I understand that you can be a young 25 or an older 25, depending on the time that
01:59you've had.
02:00I just look around the league, Joe, and we've seen guys get second chances in Geno Smith
02:08and Sam Darnold.
02:09I see certain organizations running out starting quarterbacks.
02:13They shouldn't be running out.
02:15Joe Flacco, Tyler Shuck.
02:18I'm sorry, but like you're telling me the New Orleans Saints season makes more sense where
02:25they spend a top 40 draft pick on Tyler Shuck instead of giving Trey Lance the season.
02:31I don't think that makes any sense.
02:33Well, it depends on the mindset of the organization.
02:36Now, I agree with you on a couple of things.
02:38I'll say this, that I think when they made assessments on quarterbacks and evaluations,
02:44it used to be we need to know if this kid could start within basically 16 games, 17 games.
02:49Either you get it or you don't, a la Zach Wilson.
02:52But I think there's also a lot of hype that goes with these quarterbacks that they're given
02:58first round grades because it's not a deep quarterback class and scouts and GMs will fall in love
03:06with somebody and will pump this guy up to be a first round selection.
03:11And he's not worthy of that grade.
03:14And I'll keep going back to Trey Lance when he left North Dakota State at a completion percentage of 63%.
03:21North Dakota State, as you know, football factory at the FCS level with Carson Wentz and his success.
03:28And they were making him out to be the second coming potentially of him.
03:32And he was an RPO guy.
03:34But, you know, when he stepped up against better competition, the numbers weren't that great.
03:38He shouldn't have been the third overall pick in the draft, quarterback-wise.
03:43He should have been more of a second or a third round pick.
03:46And the expectation of that, I think, hurt him.
03:51But that's the problem is that we put these grades.
03:53Malik Willis deserved to be a third round selection.
03:57But the media and the GMs pumped him up to potentially be the first quarterback selected.
04:03Will Levis is another example.
04:05Pumped up to be a first.
04:06He never should have been in the conversation.
