00:01:14Just because he's Polish.
00:01:15You think it's easy?
00:01:17You're very chauvinistic, you know that.
00:01:20Big words don't impress me.
00:01:22Don't worry, I know what does impress you.
00:01:26At least I used to.
00:01:29You still do.
00:01:33Wait a minute, Charlie. Mulligan's getting up very slowly,
00:01:35and I think he's injured that right knee again.
00:01:38Well, it appears as if Mulligan has walked it off,
00:01:44and apparently he's going to stay in the game.
00:01:47All right, second and 16.
00:01:50And with the way Philadelphia's been covering the Boston receivers,
00:01:53and with Hank Ives' speed in that Boston backfield,
00:01:56we may see some wide stuff, maybe the Rebels' famous reverse play.
00:01:59Here we go.
00:02:00Five, 84, up!
00:02:03And it is a reverse play, but Mulligan has tipped the handoff to Ives,
00:02:08and now they have him hemmed in,
00:02:10and Walensky brings him down in the 31.
00:02:13The only man Mulligan did fool was Hazen, who belted him good.
00:02:16And Mulligan's limping badly again.
00:02:19Wait a minute, where's Ives?
00:02:27They've untangled that pile, and all I can see is Cougar players.
00:02:30Where's Hank Ives?
00:02:32And there's the gun ending the first half,
00:02:35and this has to be the most confused ending to a first half
00:02:39in the history of professional football.
00:02:42Okay, Curt, we're setting it up again on instant replay.
00:02:45See if we can make some sort of sense out of this.
00:02:48There's the snap.
00:02:52Ives takes the handoff right there.
00:02:53He starts for his left.
00:02:55But there you see the Cougars have smelled out the play,
00:02:57and here they go, converging on Ives just about on their own sideline.
00:03:01And there, they've hit Ives hard.
00:03:03He goes down, smothered by four Cougar defenders.
00:03:06Now here's Richie Mulligan getting up very slowly.
00:03:08He must have gotten nailed away from the play.
00:03:10Now we're back where they're unpiling off Hank Ives.
00:03:15And there it is again, ladies and gentlemen, in slow motion.
00:03:18They've unpiled, and Hank Ives has vanished.
00:03:22Maybe it's some kind of a joke.
00:03:24Either that or Hank Ives has disappeared in front of 50,000 fans
00:03:27and millions of television viewers.
00:03:30What is it, honey, some kind of a trick play or something?
00:03:34Well, if it is, it was invented by a coach named Dini.
00:03:36What is it, honey, some kind of a trick play?
00:04:06What is it, honey, some kind of a trick play?

00:07:00This is KL17811. Go ahead.
00:07:08Speaking.
00:07:12Hi, Jerry.
00:07:15Yeah, I saw the game. It's a pretty good play.
00:07:21Oh, come on, Jerry.
00:07:26Okay, be there in 15 minutes.
00:07:30Take the next exit. Go to the Brinkman building.
00:07:33Right.
00:07:42This one looked ridiculous.
00:07:45What's your version, Richie?
00:07:47Look, bud, fellas, you guys had to see it better than I did.
00:07:51I handed off dives, rolled out, and when I looked around, Hazen nailed me.
00:07:57What do you tell, Mr. Brinkman, that Brinkman's here?
00:08:00Banachek.
00:08:02Don't tell me Brinkman about you and this ridiculous hoax of this.
00:08:06No, actually, I'm here about the Ives' disappearance.
00:08:10That's what I'm talking about.
00:08:11It's another one of Brinkman's publicity stunts.
00:08:14Oh, it's a dandy.
00:08:14Are you here to bring Boston Casualty's congratulations?
00:08:19I'm here to tell them Boston Casualty isn't paying off on its policy.
00:08:23That also applies to finders' fees, Banachek.
00:08:26What kind of policy?
00:08:28Million dollar life on Ives, plus a non-performance clause.
00:08:32You mean Brinkman collects if Ives can't play?
00:08:34For the majority of the season, and for any reason except a football injury, illness, or a phony disappearing act.
00:08:42How much?
00:08:44Five hundred thousand.
00:08:47Now, I know those figures tend to excite you, Banachek.
00:08:50But I'd stay out of this one.
00:08:53You would.
00:08:54Hey, Lieutenant.
00:08:55What's the word, Lieutenant?
00:08:55Isn't it kidnapping?
00:08:56Oh, come on.
00:08:59Oh, come on.
00:09:00What are you doing?
00:09:01What are you doing?
00:09:02What about a state?
00:09:03Brinkman, you hide lies in there?
00:09:04Isn't a publicity stunt?
00:09:05Banachek.
00:09:09What about a state?
00:09:09Brinkman, you hide lies in there?
00:09:11Isn't a publicity stunt?
00:09:13Come on, now.
00:09:14Give us the button on the wall.
00:09:15Give me a break, will you?
00:09:16Camp on somebody else's doorstep.
00:09:17Is it a kidnapping?
00:09:18Oh, come on.
00:09:19Help!
00:09:21Sir.
00:09:22Thanks.
00:09:22Would you like a drink?
00:09:23No, thanks.
00:09:24I appreciate you coming over so quickly.
00:09:26Well, that's a circus out there, isn't it?
00:09:28I wish we had that many people at a ballgame.
00:09:30Excuse me a minute.
00:09:31Yes, darling?
00:09:33Oh, well, it can't be any worse there than it is down here.
00:09:36The reporters are coming down the chimney at home.
00:09:40Yeah, well, I talked to Lieutenant Halloran.
00:09:42He'll do what he can.
00:09:43No, I don't know what time I'll be home.
00:09:45I'll try to make it early.
00:09:47Okay, sweetheart.
00:09:50When Hank Ives disappears, everybody points a finger at me.
00:09:54The police will not take it seriously.
00:09:56The insurance company thinks I'm pulling a stunt.
00:09:58And the press agrees with both of them.
00:10:00Pittsburgh, 1968, the icy field.
00:10:03The other team's missing shoes.
00:10:06What about that 1970 press party
00:10:08where you introduced your new lady quarterback?
00:10:11She was cute, wasn't she?
00:10:13All right, all right.
00:10:13So I pulled a couple of trivial stunts.
00:10:16I mean, what promoter has it?
00:10:17Couple.
00:10:19Trivial.
00:10:20What about the 12 poodles released on the field in last year's playoffs?
00:10:24Well, of course, you know, they never did connect me with that.
00:10:28You know that.
00:10:29Ooh.
00:10:30What are you doing?
00:10:30You're supposed to be here to help me.
00:10:32I'm here to listen.
00:10:33There may be a difference.
00:10:35Okay, so listen.
00:10:37Now, what are the alternatives?
00:10:38It could be an insurance fraud.
00:10:40It could be a publicity stunt.
00:10:43Or it just could be a kidnapping.
00:10:46Now, I know it's not an insurance fraud.
00:10:47I don't steal.
00:10:49It's not a publicity stunt.
00:10:50I wouldn't be wasting your time.
00:10:52Ives could have cooked it up on his own.
00:10:54It's not the man's style.
00:10:56Look, there have been some threats on his life recently.
00:10:58They sounded legit.
00:10:59I have been paying $300 a week for a bodyguard for him out of my own pocket.
00:11:04Now, that leaves the last possibility.
00:11:06There really has been a kidnapping.
00:11:10Yes?
00:11:10Mr. Brickman, it's 10.30.
00:11:12Oh.
00:11:15Sorry, I'm 15 minutes late for that trucking merger.
00:11:18Come on, let's get out of here.
00:11:22That was funny about that poodle.
00:11:25Have you seen Hank recently, Mrs. Ives?
00:11:27No, I haven't.
00:11:28How do you know it wasn't publicity?
00:11:29Because I know it wasn't.
00:11:31Mrs. Ives.
00:11:32Please, no more questions.
00:11:33My name is Banachek.
00:11:35I'm not a reporter.
00:11:36Mr. Brickman has asked me to look into your husband's disappearance.
00:11:40He's my ex-husband.
00:11:41We were divorced two years ago.
00:11:43Is it all right if I call you later?
00:11:45Sure, Jerry knows my number.
00:11:47Hello, Angie.
00:11:48I'm sorry I can't talk to you now.
00:11:49I'll call you when I get back, okay?
00:11:50All right.
00:11:51Goodbye.
00:11:58How does it work?
00:11:59You get a percent of whatever you save the insurance company.
00:12:01Is that right?
00:12:02Usually 10%.
00:12:03Of course, right now, Boston casually doesn't think there's anything to save.
00:12:06Oh, I know.
00:12:08But don't you worry.
00:12:09No matter how much they carry on, I do an awful lot of business with that insurance company.
00:12:12I'll make sure you get your fee.
00:12:14I'll make sure I get my fee.
00:12:15I do a lot of business with that company, too.
00:12:17Thank you.
00:12:22Well, thanks for keeping the faith.
00:12:24It's not that.
00:12:25It's just I like to know they did it.
00:12:27Why did you cut away before they unpiled, Mr.
00:12:57Guilherty?
00:12:58Look, I had no idea I saw it disappear.
00:13:01I just cut the mulligan limping because, as a director, I thought it'd be a more interesting
00:13:05shot.
00:13:06More dramatic moments, you know?
00:13:07Besides, I was back on the action in four seconds.
00:13:10How many cameras do you have covering the game?
00:13:12Six.
00:13:14Is each camera's tape erased after the game?
00:13:16No.
00:13:17We usually save it for network news broadcasts, summaries, that kind of thing.
00:13:21Would you mind if I looked at all of it?
00:13:22Be my guest.
00:13:24Only it's going to cost you a fortune for the engineers and all.
00:13:27I expect to be well paid.
00:13:30Hope you got plenty of time, too.
00:13:31It took me four hours to wade through that stuff.
00:13:34But I'll tell you one thing right now, Mr. Barron-Chain.
00:13:36There's only one man who's going to tell you how it was done.
00:13:40Hank Ives.
00:13:50Man, when we left Boston, I thought that'd be the end of all these questions.
00:13:53What's the matter?
00:13:54Don't they ask questions here in Philadelphia?
00:13:55Yeah, but personally, I'm up to air with them.
00:13:58Went out all Sunday night.
00:14:00First the Boston cops, then the reporters, now you.
00:14:03I'm not even sure what you'd do.
00:14:05Restorations.
00:14:07Restorations? Like what?
00:14:08Like Hank Ives.
00:14:10He used to play in your team, didn't he?
00:14:12Yeah, he used to play with us.
00:14:13When he left, we had a party they're still talking about.
00:14:16I understand lately he's had a bodyguard.
00:14:19But would you know of any threats he could have gotten when he was playing with you?
00:14:23Do you mean, do I know anyone would want to bust his head?
00:14:26Yeah, about 39 other of these guys.
00:14:28He was kind of an arrogant hot dog.
00:14:30But when he left the team, the first interview he gave out, he said our locker room looked like an old folks home.
00:14:36What's the discussion about?
00:14:38Oh, insurance or something.
00:14:41This is Joe Fabian and this is Ed Wilensky.
00:14:44Insurance, huh?
00:14:45Well, we got a team meeting starting now.
00:14:48Like I said, we're a little sick of this whole thing.
00:14:50Look, I'm just a guy with a job.
00:14:52Like a defensive lineman.
00:14:54You look more like a halfback, fancy.
00:14:56All right, like a fancy halfback.
00:14:59Come on, we're late.
00:15:00My name's Banachek.
00:15:02I promise it'll only take a couple of minutes.
00:15:04Banachek?
00:15:05What kind of a name's Banachek?
00:15:07Same as Wilensky.
00:15:09Yeah?
00:15:10Well, I guess we got a couple minutes.
00:15:12Yeah, but what's there to tell?
00:15:13We clobbered him.
00:15:14When we got up, he wasn't there.
00:15:16We were just as surprised as anybody.
00:15:18You three guys tackle a man and he disappears out from under you.
00:15:23Now, that's hard to buy.
00:15:25You ever play ball?
00:15:27Not pro ball.
00:15:28Then maybe you don't know what that kind of tackle's like.
00:15:30You grab a piece of the guy.
00:15:32That's all.
00:15:33An arm, a leg, whatever you can get to.
00:15:35Anything to slow him down.
00:15:37Then right away, you got three other guys jumping on your back.
00:15:40And all you're hoping is that nobody cleats your eye out.
00:15:43Thousand pounds on your bones.
00:15:45So you try to dig your way out.
00:15:47This time when we unpiled, the guy wasn't there.
00:15:50That's weird.
00:15:51Maybe, but that's the way it was.
00:15:55Anything else?
00:15:57No.
00:15:58You coming, Joe?
00:15:59In a minute.
00:16:00Got to get this ankle in the whirlpool.
00:16:01You still don't believe what we said about the tackle, right?
00:16:14I know the police have asked a lot of questions, but I'm not a cop.
00:16:18Anything you'd tell me would be kept confidential.
00:16:21You heard the man tell you how it was.
00:16:23Well, that's how it was.
00:16:24Right now, you're in shallow water, Mr. Fabian.
00:16:34If it gets any deeper or hotter, give me a call.
00:16:37I'm in the Boston phone book.
00:16:38My first guest is from Boston.
00:16:54He is football's finest running back.
00:16:56And, uh, please welcome Mr. Hank Ives.
00:17:00Hank!
00:17:01He came to me just before he did this last August.
00:17:04Wanted to know if he should.
00:17:07I said no, but Jerry was his new boss.
00:17:09He thought it would be great publicity.
00:17:11So we talked him into it.
00:17:13Okay.
00:17:14Hank, first of all, we welcome you to the show.
00:17:16I'm very happy to have you here.
00:17:18Believe me, let me tell you, I have spent a lot of Sunday afternoons
00:17:22watching you make me feel like a 98-pound weakling.
00:17:25Hank, you know, a lot of people make fun of Boston.
00:17:29You know, they, there are classic jokes that go around.
00:17:32They say it's so dull for one that, uh,
00:17:35when the tide goes out, it never comes back.
00:17:39Uh, but you live there, and you, uh, play on the team,
00:17:42and you're involved there.
00:17:43How do you feel about Boston?
00:17:44Do you like Boston?
00:17:45Is it, uh, one of your favorite places?
00:17:47It's okay.
00:17:48Creme pie and baked beans.
00:17:55Hank, you are one of the most controversial football players
00:17:58in pro football today.
00:18:00How do you feel about that statement?
00:18:02You think it's true?
00:18:04No.
00:18:04Oh?
00:18:05Really?
00:18:08Um.
00:18:08I remember when this used to be a talk show.
00:18:11Am I doing something wrong?
00:18:14Hank, how are you and your teammates getting along?
00:18:18Okay.
00:18:23Did you forget the feeling you were walking up a gangplank
00:18:25and there was no ship there?
00:18:29Okay, Hank, enough of this chit-chat.
00:18:32Let's play football, okay?
00:18:34Stu, what do you say?
00:18:35Ah, there we go, eh?
00:18:37This look familiar to you?
00:18:38It's one of your cufflings.
00:18:40Okay, Hank, right over there is be fine for me, okay?
00:18:43Now, I am a linebacker and you are gonna come through.
00:18:47Now, what do you say you make your move, huh?
00:18:49Let's see, okay?
00:18:50Here you go.
00:18:51Okay, right there.
00:18:54Nice throw.
00:18:55Thanks.
00:18:56He's quite a...
00:18:57Okay, Hank, what do you say?
00:18:59Oh, you go.
00:18:59Two, four, one, two...
00:19:01Oh!
00:19:01Oh!
00:19:03He didn't...
00:19:04He used to...
00:19:06Hey, don't you think I could have nailed him if I wanted to?
00:19:08It's just that the floor is very, very dusty.
00:19:10I could have done it.
00:19:17You can see why I told him not to do it.
00:19:19Mmm.
00:19:22Anytime he was off the football field, I think he felt a little insecure.
00:19:25What?
00:19:27No, thanks.
00:19:30Somewhere along the line, Henry made a total commitment to that stupid game.
00:19:35And I mean total.
00:19:36It's funny, because I used to love football.
00:19:41Was that your problem?
00:19:43I thought it might have been the female fans.
00:19:47I know that's what everybody thought when we were divorced.
00:19:50But if that had been our only problem, maybe I could have...
00:19:54handled it.
00:19:57No, uh...
00:19:59My problem was that...
00:20:03Henry couldn't cope with any relationship.
00:20:07I knew that, but even knowing it, I couldn't relate to him.
00:20:11Even though I tried, and I tried very hard.
00:20:16He's a loner, Mr. Banachev.
00:20:19I think maybe he wanted more, but...
00:20:22Well, in order to have a relationship,
00:20:25sometimes you have to leave yourself a little vulnerable to the other person.
00:20:28And that's something Henry wouldn't do.
00:20:32He couldn't do.
00:20:34That's why you told the reporters that he couldn't have been mixed up in a conspiracy.
00:20:39Exactly.
00:20:41It takes at least two people to conspire, right?
00:20:43Mm-hmm.
00:20:44And even conspirators have to relate to each other on some level.
00:20:48Right.
00:20:49Oh, that looks like a very good show-and-tell.
00:21:02Show-and-tell?
00:21:04Oh, I'm a schoolteacher.
00:21:06Sometimes I ask the kids to bring in little interesting things from home and tell about them.
00:21:10It was my father's.
00:21:11He worked for an insurance company most of his life.
00:21:13That's the pat on the head they gave him when they phased him out for a computer.
00:21:23I once heard a hotshot executive say that
00:21:25the only difference between a man and a computer
00:21:29was that a man doesn't count.
00:21:33Uh-huh.
00:21:33He thought it was very funny.
00:21:37Why do you keep it?
00:21:39It was his.
00:21:40It helps keep things in perspective.
00:21:44Are you free for dinner?
00:21:47So we can go on talking about Henry?
00:21:50Henry.
00:21:52Henry.
00:21:55Henry who?
00:21:59Yes, I think I'm free for dinner.
00:22:03Hey, let's go.
00:22:08I can tell you one thing that happened Sunday, Mr. Banachek.
00:22:11Please.
00:22:12I showed him Hank Eyes isn't the only running back on this team.
00:22:16Came in cold.
00:22:17Gained over 100 yards in the second half.
00:22:20Not to mention scoring a winning touchdown.
00:22:22Not too bad, considering I don't get his headlines.
00:22:25You don't sound like one of Hank's biggest fans.
00:22:28Listen, I'm not saying he isn't good,
00:22:30but nobody's that good.
00:22:32Not to behave the way he does.
00:22:34Dirt mean, somebody said.
00:22:36Mean?
00:22:37He was born mean.
00:22:38And that's the best he was.
00:22:40Ever since he lost those tags of his,
00:22:42he was plain impossible.
00:22:43What tags?
00:22:44Dog tags.
00:22:46He wore them around his neck.
00:22:47Good luck charm.
00:22:49If Eyes was so good,
00:22:50why did he need good luck?
00:22:52Oh, come on, Clayton.
00:22:53There's no need to be poor-mouthing one of our own beloved teammates.
00:22:58I'm just telling the man the truth.
00:23:00See you later, Banachek.
00:23:03Clayton ain't exactly a neutral on the subject of Hank Ives.
00:23:06I mean, fighting for a job.
00:23:08Really, Hank isn't such a bad old boy.
00:23:10I guess what I'm saying is I'd appreciate it
00:23:13if you wouldn't print what he said.
00:23:15I'm not a reporter, Mr. Mulligan.
00:23:17My name's Banachek.
00:23:18Oh, yeah.
00:23:19Jerry Brinkman.
00:23:20He told me about you.
00:23:22He said you'd be nosing around here.
00:23:25He's got a lot of faith in you.
00:23:26Have you found out anything yet?
00:23:28Bits and pieces.
00:23:29It's a real puzzler.
00:23:32I've been racking my brain
00:23:34for trying to figure it out for the last three days.
00:23:36I guess it's just too much for an old country boy like me.
00:23:41An old country boy with a master's in business administration?
00:23:46You're sharp.
00:23:47I like that.
00:23:48Just a fan.
00:23:50Here.
00:23:51Thanks.
00:23:52That reverse, did you call it,
00:23:54or did they send it in from the bench?
00:23:56No.
00:23:56Jerry Brinkman pays me a lot of cash every year
00:23:58for what's up here.
00:24:00I called it, and I call them all.
00:24:03You know, you're the first guy
00:24:04that's had a good word to say about Ives.
00:24:06Well, it's not like I couldn't say something bad.
00:24:10Being buddies with Hank Ives
00:24:11is not like a stroll through the melon patch.
00:24:14But if you play it straight with them,
00:24:17everything will go okay.
00:24:19Hey, I gotta go.
00:24:21It's a pleasure.
00:24:22If I can be of any help, give me a holler.
00:24:23Thanks.
00:24:24All right.
00:24:28Thank you.
00:24:58Amém.
00:25:28BANACHECK
00:25:55Hey, are you Banachek?
00:25:59Mr. Brinkman for you on the telephone.
00:26:02You can take it in the coach's office.
00:26:16Jerry?
00:26:17Yeah, the police are here already, but I wanted you to know right away.
00:26:21We received a ransom note for Hank Ives.
00:26:25How much do they want?
00:26:26Two million dollars.
00:26:28It's got a nice ring to it.
00:26:30Yeah, they want one million from me and one million from the league.
00:26:34Can you raise that kind of money?
00:26:37To tell you the truth, I don't know.
00:26:39Maybe I won't have to if you can find out how they grabbed him out of that pileup.
00:26:45I don't think they did.
00:26:46For Hank Ives, safe return. One million dollars from Brinkman and the Rebels and one million dollars from the league.
00:27:00You have three days or we kill Ives.
00:27:02You'll be contacted where to leave the money.
00:27:06This is a copy, of course. The police have the original anticarbon.
00:27:09Carbon?
00:27:10League Commissioner Grant also received a copy.
00:27:12Do you have a statement, Commissioner?
00:27:13Not at this time. I've called a meeting of all the league owners for later this afternoon. I'll be glad to talk to you after that.
00:27:19You mean there's some doubt the ransom will be met.
00:27:21Oh, I didn't say that. But there are certain details that have to be worked out. For example, the allocation of loss.
00:27:26You see, some of the owners have indicated to me on the phone that they had misgivings about giving in to this kind of extortion.
00:27:32Could you tell us which owners?
00:27:33Certainly not. Ask them yourself.
00:27:36What's your position, Commissioner?
00:27:39My position is that I'll have a statement later this afternoon.
00:27:43What if the owners don't come up with the ransom?
00:27:45What if my favorite gentlemen and gentlemen, please?
00:27:48If you don't mind, I'd like to say something.
00:27:51No one knows better than I the tragic implications of this development.
00:27:54No one fears for the safety of Hank Ives more than I do.
00:27:58If nothing else, I hope at long last all of these slanderous stories about this being a publicity stunt will finally be laid to rest.
00:28:06Along with Henry Ives.
00:28:09I find that in very poor taste.
00:28:14Well, I guess that makes us even.
00:28:17So far as you know, do the police have any leads yet?
00:28:19Well, not that I know of. He may know something. You all know Mr. Banachek.
00:28:22He's working for me on this matter. Have you made any progress?
00:28:27No.
00:28:29You mean no progress yet?
00:28:32I mean no. I'm not working for Mr. Brinkman.
00:28:35What are you saying?
00:28:36Then who are you working for?
00:28:38Does a man have to work for somebody?
00:28:39I see you in the office for a moment, please.
00:28:44What was that all about?
00:28:49I thought I covered it pretty well.
00:28:51I thought we had an agreement.
00:28:53I said I'd get into the case, but I don't work for anybody.
00:28:57You in it for laughs?
00:28:58I have an agreement with Boston Casually. It says I get 10% of whatever they don't have to pay out.
00:29:03Of course, they never expect to have to pay out.
00:29:09Is that all there is to it?
00:29:10You know more?
00:29:11Well, yeah. Maybe you found out something you don't want to tell me.
00:29:14Are you familiar with the term paranoia?
00:29:16Oh, come on. If you've got some suspicions, lay it on the table.
00:29:19I've been looking into motives. Yours looks pretty good.
00:29:21Mine?
00:29:25Hmm.
00:29:26How do you figure that?
00:29:28You could come up with that million-dollar ransom easy, and that makes you look pretty clean.
00:29:33But you'll probably get it back from the insurance company.
00:29:36Then you can pocket the second million the other owners are coming up with.
00:29:41Why would I do it?
00:29:43Maybe because before you made that trade for Hank Ives, this franchise was losing a lot of money.
00:29:48Well, that's common knowledge.
00:29:49It's not common knowledge that the rest of your financial empire is kind of shaky.
00:30:00You do nose around, don't you?
00:30:02It's my business.
00:30:04So because of all that, do you think that I am responsible for Hank Ives' kidnapping?
00:30:09I could think that.
00:30:10But if I was working for you, I'd try not to.
00:30:13Which is why I'm not working for you or anybody else.
00:30:19Is that all you wanted?
00:30:21Yeah.
00:30:22Don't get up.
00:30:23Hi.
00:30:40Homework?
00:30:42Theirs, and now mine.
00:30:43You want to talk?
00:30:44Well, I'm not too good at correcting spelling tests.
00:30:51Did you teach when you were married to Hank?
00:30:54Sure.
00:30:57Hey, are you investigating me?
00:30:59Would I find anything interesting?
00:31:01It depends on what you find interesting.
00:31:04Why did Hank wear dog tags?
00:31:07Is that what you find interesting?
00:31:09Right now.
00:31:13Uh, why?
00:31:15Well, they were his father's.
00:31:18Hank worshipped his father, or the memory of his father.
00:31:21He was killed in...
00:31:24in 1944 in Quadrant.
00:31:26Hank was only three years old then.
00:31:29When his father's body was sent home with all his effects his mother gave him the dog tags.
00:31:34She died about two years later.
00:31:37So those dog tags were all Hank ever had of his father.
00:31:41They meant a lot more to him than just to good luck to him.
00:31:45Oh, to say the least.
00:31:46Did he ever take them off?
00:31:47Sometimes, at night.
00:31:57You're funny.
00:31:59Right.
00:32:01Of all the things to ask me about.
00:32:04Oh, I know why you asked me about the dog tags.
00:32:07Your father's watch. I made you tell me about your father's watch.
00:32:09Yeah, I guess that's it.
00:32:11Well, you have your watch. Hank has his dog tags.
00:32:14And you?
00:32:15I guess I don't believe very much in the things.
00:32:19People.
00:32:21A few.
00:32:23Hank Ives.
00:32:25Once.
00:32:27A very complex human being.
00:32:29That's just another way of saying nobody likes him.
00:32:32But you're right.
00:32:34He is complex.
00:32:36Then so are you, you know.
00:32:39Of course I am.
00:32:40No, I mean it.
00:32:42You wear a mask just like he did.
00:32:44Really?
00:32:45Really.
00:32:47His is hostility.
00:32:48Yours is...
00:32:51Cool.
00:32:53But it's a lot nicer.
00:32:55And a lot warmer.
00:32:57Well, you passed pretty good.
00:33:00Can you catch?
00:33:01I'm not sure.
00:33:04I'm not sure.
00:33:08I think you married a man 100% different from you.
00:33:12He didn't remind you of school and children.
00:33:15He was a big strong man.
00:33:18Who'd take care of you.
00:33:20I think you fell in love with that idea.
00:33:27Except I found out that he was more of a little boy then.
00:33:31Than any of these.
00:33:36But I'm disappointed in you, Branicek.
00:33:39That's the oldest line in the world.
00:33:41Psychoanalyze the lady.
00:33:43And make it good and personal.
00:33:45I'm in a personal business.
00:33:46Are you still in love with him?
00:33:50No.
00:33:52I just understand him.
00:33:54That's something nobody ever took the time to try.
00:33:57He's just one of those people who has to live with opponents.
00:34:00If there aren't any around, he creates them.
00:34:03He has to fight somebody.
00:34:05Is he smart enough not to fight the people who kidnapped him?
00:34:11Well, he's pretty much all emotion.
00:34:13Mr. Banachek.
00:34:14Mr. Banachek.
00:34:15Excuse me.
00:34:17Mr. Banachek, it's your answering service.
00:34:18They've got Joe Fabian on the line.
00:34:20Remember, he's that football player I...
00:34:21I remember.
00:34:22Tell him to cross-connect.
00:34:23Operator, please cross-connect.
00:34:24Mr. Banachek will take the call.
00:34:27Banachek.
00:34:30Where?
00:34:34All right.
00:34:35That's Joe Fabian.
00:34:40He wants to see me tonight.
00:34:41Do you know him?
00:34:43I've met him.
00:34:45Seem the nervous type to you?
00:34:47Hardly.
00:34:49Well, he's nervous now.
00:34:50Well, he's nervous now.
00:35:18But, he's very careful.
00:35:23He just wants to see me.
00:35:25He wants his room.
00:35:27He's in the middle of the aقول.
00:35:30Go.
00:35:31He wants to see you tonight.
00:35:33He wants to see you tonight.
00:35:35He wants to see you tonight.
00:35:37He wants to see you tonight.
00:35:39O que é isso?

00:37:57É isso que eu vejo esses animais
00:37:59ao ensino.
00:38:01E ter uma vez só.
00:38:03Watched the coach bite his lip, something like that.
00:38:06Now, in this game, we followed some of the substitutions running in,
00:38:10but we didn't really concentrate on the bench.
00:38:12Yeah, yeah, that's them, all right.
00:38:14Ives and Mulligan.
00:38:16Mulligan talking to Ives.
00:38:18Quarterback and star running back, I hope they talk.
00:38:21But what about?
00:38:23Except for that one piece of tape, there's no sign of Ives on the sidelines.
00:38:26Well, I'm sure he walked down the bench to get a better look at the field.
00:38:30Maybe get on the horn with the coaches upstairs.
00:38:32Cameras just didn't pick him up.
00:38:33That's all.
00:38:34Can you give me a blow-up of that one piece?
00:38:36The Mulligan talking to Ives?
00:38:37Sure, but I still don't see how that could be too important.
00:38:41There's an old Polish proverb that says,
00:38:43if you're not sure that it's potato borscht,
00:38:46there could be orphans working in the mines.
00:38:53Are you sure you got that straight?
00:38:56It means what you don't know can hurt you a lot.
00:39:00Right.
00:39:01Come on, I'll show you how we're going to get that blow up.
00:39:06Boy, I'll tell you, it's horrible.
00:39:14You know, Fabian almost played for us.
00:39:17I don't know what happened, but something happened at the last minute and the trade fell through.
00:39:20Did you know him?
00:39:21Yeah, I knew him like, you know, most of the guys in this league.
00:39:25They seem like a nice guy.
00:39:28Have you heard anything about the ransom?
00:39:30All I know is they haven't been able to scrape up that $2 million yet.
00:39:33Well, they got to.
00:39:35They can't gamble on Hank's life.
00:39:38I mean, it's not like the kidnappers never kill the guy they kidnap.
00:39:43Don't worry.
00:39:44The police are really into it now.
00:39:45By the way, remember talking to Ives during the game?
00:39:51I talk to everybody.
00:39:53I'm the friendly leader now, I know, but I mean on the sidelines.
00:39:56Look, when I'm on the sidelines, I'm talking on the phones to the brass upstairs.
00:40:04Well, you see, we've got this television tape.
00:40:08It's a shot of you talking to Ives.
00:40:10Well, why didn't you say so?
00:40:12I mean, I can't pay attention to every little bitty detail.
00:40:16If you have a shot of me talking to Hank Ives, I guess I was talking to Hank.
00:40:20Not that he's one of the world's greatest talkers.
00:40:23But what did you say to him?
00:40:24I guess I said when we get in at halftime, Hank, we've got to clear this mess up.
00:40:30Oh, come on, but you try again.
00:40:35Yeah, I guess I do remember standing there, Hank.
00:40:37But I don't remember what I said.
00:40:39I mean, I could have been talking about last week's movie or the average rainfall in San Diego, for all I know.
00:40:46My mind's on the game.
00:40:48And my mouth sometimes takes off on its own.
00:40:54Thanks.
00:40:55Thanks for nothing.
00:41:00Clay.
00:41:03Clay.
00:41:05More questions?
00:41:06I want to find out exactly when Ives lost his dog tags.
00:41:12Why?
00:41:13I'm a collector of trivia.
00:41:15I can sure tell you.
00:41:16It was the day after the Cleveland game.
00:41:18Three weeks ago?
00:41:19Yeah.
00:41:20He came into practice that Tuesday like the whole world.
00:41:23He got together and kicked them in the gut.
00:41:25He was down on everybody.
00:41:26We were running through a little dummy scrimmage, and he's playing like it's a Super Bowl.
00:41:31Racked up a couple of guys, and I had to fill in on defense.
00:41:34And he gave me a bloody nose.
00:41:36I see.
00:41:38Suppose now you think there are a lot of reasons why I'd want to get rid of Ives, right?
00:41:44Right.
00:41:45Well, I didn't.
00:41:47But I guess that's what you'd expect me to say, right?
00:41:52Right.
00:41:52I'm talking about the night after the Cleveland game.
00:42:01Well, we went out.
00:42:02Just you and Ives?
00:42:04And his bodyguard.
00:42:05Business?
00:42:06Well, we talked a little contract.
00:42:08Had a little dinner.
00:42:09A few drinks.
00:42:10I understand Ives attracted the ladies.
00:42:12Oh, boy, he had to beat him off of the club, I'll tell you.
00:42:16Anything special that night?
00:42:18Just a girl.
00:42:20He was talking to her when I left.
00:42:22Couldn't find you one, huh?
00:42:24There's nothing out there that's better than what I got at home.
00:42:27Besides, if I were interested, I don't think I'd need any help, even from a superstar.
00:42:31Do you remember her name?
00:42:33How do I know she?
00:42:34Sat down and started talking to Hank.
00:42:37What were they talking about?
00:42:39Keynesian economics.
00:42:41How do I know what they were talking about?
00:42:42I finished my stake and left.
00:42:46Don't tell anybody, huh?
00:42:47Look, uh, I'll tell you right now.
00:43:13I'm not going to tell you anything if it means I get in trouble with the law.
00:43:17I was busted last year for serving minors.
00:43:19I mean, how can you tell?
00:43:21Everybody's dressing so young, you figure everybody's old and they look.
00:43:25No trouble with the law.
00:43:26All I want to do is talk about Hank Ives.
00:43:33What can I tell you?
00:43:34Uh, he eats here, he drinks here, sometimes, uh, he fights here.
00:43:38Set it up for me.
00:43:39The last night he was here.
00:43:42Well, as far as I can remember, it, uh, it was, uh, just Brinkman, Ives, and, uh, that
00:43:47other guy I hear was some kind of bodyguard.
00:43:51And that's all?
00:43:56Uh, no, no, no.
00:43:58Uh, that's what I remember that night.
00:44:01Of course, of that chick.
00:44:02The one who made the play for Ives.
00:44:04Uh, your Ives.
00:44:05Always had a lot of women around him.
00:44:07Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, but this one was a little more dingy than usual, you know.
00:44:10Wild looking, mind you, but, uh, dingy.
00:44:13I guess you get a lot of girls in here.
00:44:16Well, if they behave themselves, sure, why not?
00:44:19Look, uh, a lot of famous jocks come in here, so the girls, they come in, too.
00:44:24Hey, uh, you ought to come around here yourself.
00:44:27I, I mean, I know you're no big name pro, but you ought to be able to make out pretty good anyhow.
00:44:31That's very reassuring.
00:44:33But we're talking about this dingy broad.
00:44:36You like that type, huh?
00:44:39Holly Allen Camp, Ridgewell 803.
00:44:42I memorized it.
00:44:44Uh, she come in here, uh, four or five nights straight.
00:44:47Sipped two drinks.
00:44:49Spritzes.
00:44:50A little white wine, a little soda.
00:44:52Uh, she asked me about Hank.
00:44:54And she waited until a nightie came in?
00:44:56Right.
00:44:57And you got chummy with her?
00:44:58Well, sitting there night after night, I started talking to her.
00:45:02I mean, I'm not exactly a monk, you know.
00:45:04Uh, anyhow, it, uh, it turned out she's from a little town, Ridgewell.
00:45:08It's about, uh, a hundred miles up the coast.
00:45:11Ah, I'm from, uh, a small town, too.
00:45:15Brooklyn.
00:45:19Uh, anyhow, uh, she gave me a name and number.
00:45:22But she was waiting for Ives.
00:45:26Well, uh, as far as I can tell, all these guys, uh, were coming on to her and she kept turning them off.
00:45:31That's why I said dingy.
00:45:33Imagine, sitting there five nights waiting for Hank, without even knowing if he'd give her a tumble.
00:45:39Sounds like my kind of girl.
00:45:41Is that the payphone?
00:45:41Oh, yeah.
00:45:44You know, uh, uh, when you first came in here, I said to myself, nice-looking guy.
00:45:51But, uh, there's something a little, uh, weird.
00:45:59Thanks.
00:46:00Thanks.
00:46:11Come on, Henry.
00:46:31Good girl.
00:46:32I'll lay him with you.
00:46:39Thanks.
00:46:41May I sit down?
00:46:44Sure.
00:46:48For a small town, you got a lot of bars.
00:46:51This is the fourth one I've been in looking for you.
00:46:53Small town's gotta have a lot of bars.
00:46:55I tried calling you.
00:46:57It's about Hank Ives.
00:46:58Oh, did they find him?
00:47:00No.
00:47:00Oh, too bad.
00:47:02Good-looking guy.
00:47:04The night you were out with him, where did you go when you left the restaurant?
00:47:08How come you wear your hair so short?
00:47:09So I won't have to worry about it.
00:47:13Well, when you left the restaurant...
00:47:14But you're not in the Army, I can tell.
00:47:17This bar used to be jammed every night with guys from the Army.
00:47:19You know, the base is just a few miles down the road.
00:47:21Of course, it's closed now.
00:47:22But they used to have real GI regulations about how long you could wear your hair.
00:47:26Mm-hmm.
00:47:27Did Ives take you to his place?
00:47:28I met a guy here one night.
00:47:31I'm not kidding.
00:47:32He wore a wig.
00:47:34I mean, during the day, you know, he wore it short for the Army.
00:47:37But at night when he went out, put on a real mod wig.
00:47:40Looked pretty good, too.
00:47:42First time he took it off, it scared me half to time.
00:47:46Ives didn't drive you all the way back here, did he?
00:47:48What did you say your name was?
00:47:50I didn't.
00:47:51It's Benetech.
00:47:51I mean, your real name.
00:47:54That's my real name.
00:47:55You're kidding.
00:47:55What is it, Italian or something?
00:47:57Polish.
00:48:01Oh, well, um, my mother used to go with a Polish guy from Chicago.
00:48:05He was a cop.
00:48:07You a cop?
00:48:08No.
00:48:10Uh, Miss...
00:48:11Holly.
00:48:12Short for Hollis.
00:48:13Hollis Barker Allen Camp.
00:48:16Barker was my mother's maiden name.
00:48:20Where are you from, Benetech?
00:48:21Boston.
00:48:26And you came all the way up here to see me?
00:48:29New faces, new experience.
00:48:32Well, you came to the right place.
00:48:34Oh, I don't mean exactly right here.
00:48:36I mean I live a block away.
00:48:38By the way, who told you about me?
00:48:40Bartender, cabbie?
00:48:42Bartender.
00:48:43Which one?
00:48:44It's a Boston bartender.
00:48:45Oh, I guess I know.
00:48:46It doesn't matter.
00:48:49Bartenders knocked me out.
00:48:50I knew this guy once.
00:48:52He won an international drink mixing contest.
00:48:55Can I have a couple quarters?
00:48:57Oh, yeah.
00:48:58And he made a real crazy concoction.
00:49:00Let's see, it was cognac and creme de cacao.
00:49:04Cocoa or cacao or something like that.
00:49:06And milk.
00:49:07Anyway, they gave him a trip.
00:49:10He got all expenses paid, first class ticket to Hawaii.
00:49:13How about that?
00:49:14Hmm.
00:49:15You're faking, honey.
00:49:17I never came back.
00:49:22Now, where did you go with Hank Ives?
00:49:24You're hurting me.
00:49:26No, I'm not.
00:49:28Listen, I gotta deal with the management.
00:49:29Whenever the guy that hustles me turns out to be a bummer,
00:49:32I just start screaming.
00:49:33It works every time.
00:49:34Good.
00:49:35Then we'll call the police.
00:49:37Then tell them I'm working on the Hank Ives case.
00:49:40and you're the lead I'm working on.
00:49:52Now, what was your assignment?
00:49:56Did you get his dog tags?
00:49:57What are you talking about?
00:49:59He told the bodyguard to get lost.
00:50:00The two of you turned in.
00:50:03You sure you're not a cop?
00:50:04No.
00:50:05But some of my best friends are.
00:50:07So tell me about those dog tags.
00:50:10I wonder why they call them dog tags.
00:50:13I guess because dogs wear them, huh?
00:50:16He never took them off.
00:50:17What happened?
00:50:18Did he go to sleep?
00:50:20I didn't notice.
00:50:21So you just clipped them off his neck?
00:50:24Well, he could have scratched himself to death.
00:50:28And me, too.
00:50:30Hmm.
00:50:31What did you do with him?
00:50:32Oh, I don't know.
00:50:33I tossed him somewhere.
00:50:35Mm-mm.
00:50:35You gave him to the guy that pointed you in Hank Ives' direction.
00:50:39Who was he?
00:50:42Look, uh,
00:50:43why don't you just cruise on out of here?
00:50:45Who was he?
00:50:46I need a name, Holly.
00:50:48A name.
00:50:49I'll pay $100 for the first
00:50:53and $100 for the second.
00:50:56Al Bates.
00:50:58Al.
00:50:59Bates.
00:51:00That's $200.
00:51:01His middle name is Walter.
00:51:03Sorry.
00:51:06Mr. Banachek.
00:51:08Bates used to be with the Army.
00:51:11He was kicked out for, uh, stealing or something like that.
00:51:14You fool with him, you're liable to get your whole head twisted off.
00:51:20I'll remember.
00:51:21I'll remember.
00:51:44I'll remember.
00:52:06I'll remember.
00:52:08I'll remember.
00:52:11I'll remember.
00:52:12O que é isso?
00:52:42I'd take Bobby Fischer with me if I were you.
00:52:45Nossons, it's so obvious.
00:52:51What?
00:52:54What did you see?
00:52:55Well, it wouldn't be fair.
00:52:57To whom?
00:52:58To you.
00:52:59What if I helped you out and you won the game?
00:53:02I mean, how would you feel?
00:53:03Better than if I lost the ruddy game through my own ineptitude.
00:53:06Now, if you can get your mind off Kiev for a minute and onto Washington.
00:53:10Oh, yes.
00:53:12Straight from the Pentagon.
00:53:23Now, if you'd like a little something out of Fort Knox.
00:53:26The other one's even more difficult.
00:53:28Old army records are kept on microfilm in St. Louis.
00:53:30Oh, when your contact checks St. Louis, have them get the records of these two, just in case.
00:53:38I would have thought Jerry Brinkman was in the Navy.
00:53:44All that yachting crowd, you know.
00:53:46Oh, by the way, have you seen the latest issue of Sports Illustrated?
00:53:53No, I've been busy.
00:53:55Pick up a copy.
00:53:56It contains an article on the ritualistic ancestry of pro football by Arnold Shaw.
00:54:02Very definitive piece.
00:54:05Brilliant research.
00:54:07Yours, I suppose.
00:54:10What tipped you off?
00:54:11Brilliant or definitive?
00:54:14Your smirk, as a matter of fact.
00:54:15Why should I read it?
00:54:18Only that you're working on the I.A.G.'s case.
00:54:20And with a veritable font of football information at your disposal, how do you use me?
00:54:25To ferret out obscure army records.
00:54:27It's a frightful waste of one of our great natural resources.
00:54:30Hmm.
00:54:39Commerce.
00:54:40Did you really see anything?
00:54:42I'm sorry.
00:55:12A CIDADE NO BRASIL
00:55:42Could I see it again, please?
00:55:44Of course.
00:55:56And something about tags.
00:55:59Tags?
00:56:00I think.
00:56:02That's fine, Dr. Forrest. Thanks.
00:56:05People with a drawl are difficult to lip-read.
00:56:09Their rhythm throws you off.
00:56:11It's slower, and the words tend to blend together.
00:56:14Anyway, that's the best I can do.
00:56:19You've been a tremendous help, Dr. Forrest. Thank you.
00:56:22It's a pleasure. Call me any time.
00:56:25I thought you were a reader of lips, not mind.
00:56:27Hey, Mulligan!
00:56:35I'll be there in a minute.
00:56:37Mr. Banachek, I wish I could help you.
00:56:40But I can't figure out for the life of me what I said to Hank.
00:56:43I guess I just pay attention to what's going on out there,
00:56:45between the sidelines during a game.
00:56:47See, that's how I make my life.
00:56:49They have a good one, too.
00:56:50Hey, come on, Mulligan. Let's go.
00:56:52Nice catch, Banachek.
00:56:56Did you ever play ball?
00:56:57Yeah, badly, in college.
00:57:00But I had trouble.
00:57:01Same as yours, I got a glass knee.
00:57:03You know, we studied that tape when you were talking to Ives during the game.
00:57:07I even got a lip reader.
00:57:10I know what you were saying.
00:57:11You went to all that trouble?
00:57:14I must have said something important.
00:57:16What was it?
00:57:17You said, uh, there's a blonde over there.
00:57:20Then we lost a couple of words.
00:57:22Then you said something about tags.
00:57:24Dog tags.
00:57:25I remember now.
00:57:27A guy came over and told me there was a blonde waiting in the tunnel with Hank's dog tags.
00:57:32Hey, I gotta go.
00:57:34If I don't get out there, the coach will have steam flying through his ears.
00:57:36Okay, thanks.
00:57:38Hey, Mulligan, the knee looks better.
00:57:40Don't feel better.
00:57:46Mr. Banachek?
00:57:47Mr. Banachek?
00:57:49I got a call from Felix.
00:57:50He asked me to bring these army records over to you right away.
00:57:53Thanks.
00:57:53Oh, and there's a message, too.
00:57:56That guy sure talks funny.
00:57:57He says, uh, Thomas, in case you're wondering how I managed to get them so quickly, I...
00:58:02I'll call him.
00:58:06Operator, this is mobile KL17811.
00:58:11Calling 555-0716.
00:58:14Just thought I'd save you the call, that's all.
00:58:16Hello?
00:58:21Felix.
00:58:23Thanks for the personnel records.
00:58:25Oh, yes, Thomas.
00:58:26In case you're wondering how I managed to get them so quickly...
00:58:29Say, didn't Jay give you my message?
00:58:32Well, he was going to, but your accent is better.
00:58:35Yeah?
00:58:35Well, someday I'd like to hear a Sicilian.
00:58:37Well, anyhow, since you convinced me to concentrate on my chess game, I had them teletyped in.
00:58:42Good.
00:58:43By the way, there's an old English proverb that says,
00:58:47The only thing worse than a devious Russian is a sneaky pole.
00:58:52You mean the only thing better.
00:58:53You, uh, you got something, huh?
00:59:05Yeah.
00:59:08Yeah, I got something.
00:59:095-5-5-3-6-7-1.
00:59:16No, ma'am, he's out of town till Thursday.
00:59:19No, ma'am, I don't know who he's with.
00:59:21Would you care to leave your name?
00:59:265-5-5-2-2-9-2.
00:59:28No, sir, but if you check him with me as soon as he gets home.
00:59:32Certainly.
00:59:33That's the message.
00:59:35Get here as soon as you can.
00:59:38Condition, condition, bright red.
00:59:42And your name?
00:59:44Did you say Bates, sir?
00:59:46That's right.
00:59:48Al Bates.
01:00:04You won't lose him, will you?
01:00:06Not if he stays in that giant canary.
01:00:08Not if he stays in that giant canary.
01:00:08Let's get what they just got.
01:00:10I don't know who he was.
01:00:12Yeah.
01:00:13I don't know.
01:00:14Simon, you won't lose him.
01:00:18I don't know what he's been.
01:00:21But he'll be voulais them.
01:00:24I don't know.
01:00:25I don't know.
01:00:28If he stays in that giant canary.
01:00:28I don't know where he's going.
01:00:30He's going she's...
01:00:31Joe...
01:00:31Laura...
01:00:32I don't know where he's.
01:00:33...
01:00:34Sorry.
01:00:35Bye.
01:00:35You ain't get her done.
01:00:35She's been aí.
01:00:36Tchau, tchau.
01:01:06Tchau, tchau.
01:01:36Tchau, tchau.
01:02:06Well, as long as I'm here.
01:02:11Go on.
01:02:12Caught this one sneaking around outside.
01:02:22Oh, great.
01:02:27You know him?
01:02:28That's Banachek.
01:02:30The one I told you about.
01:02:31And you must be Al Bates.
01:02:33You put it together, huh?
01:02:35Except for him.
01:02:37But I think I see how he fits in.
01:02:38He's about the right size.
01:02:40By the way, it was Fort Riley where the two of you got together, wasn't it?
01:02:44About seven years ago.
01:02:44I'm a great reader of Army personnel records.
01:02:50Smart.
01:02:52I think you've just smarted yourself out of business.
01:02:56You gonna kill him, too?
01:02:58What do you think?
01:02:59I mean, you can't just go around killing...
01:03:01Back off, country boy.
01:03:02You just run your place.
01:03:05I'll take care of real life.
01:03:08Banachek, I'm sorry.
01:03:10Things happen.
01:03:12The gun, Hicks.
01:03:13Better keep that gun, Hicks.
01:03:15You're in enough trouble already.
01:03:17The gun.
01:03:19It's too late.
01:03:20Why, you got a bluff working?
01:03:25Take a look.
01:03:36Nothing.
01:03:37Not even a good drive on it, Hicks.
01:03:40Well, you do what you can.
01:03:48Now what?
01:03:50You use these two to get out of here.
01:03:52Like hostages?
01:03:53Oh, you got a real smart head, country boy.
01:03:55Here, cut him loose.
01:03:55Move.
01:04:02Well, Hank, it's fourth down and long yardage.
01:04:05What play would you call?
01:04:12Banachek?
01:04:13That's me.
01:04:14All right, boys, let's get these guys out of here.
01:04:16Press them.
01:04:20My name's Banachek.
01:04:33So I heard.
01:04:34Thanks for calling that last play.
01:04:37Thanks to the execution.
01:04:39Look, if you're interested,
01:04:41I think I know a team's going to be looking for a new quarterback.
01:04:43Anything you need around here?
01:04:46Nothing.
01:04:47Well, let's get out of here.
01:04:52It figured it'd be Mulligan from the beginning.
01:04:55He called the play.
01:04:56He provided the diversion.
01:04:58But let's go back a bit.
01:05:01Mulligan's on the sidelines.
01:05:02It's about five minutes to halftime.
01:05:05And the other team has the ball.
01:05:07But the Cougars hadn't been able to sustain any kind of drive at all.
01:05:10And Mulligan knows his offensive team will be going in in a matter of minutes.
01:05:14So he walks over to where Hank's standing, by himself, as usual.
01:05:18And he says there's this blonde back in the tunnel who says she's got his dog tags.
01:05:23They stole him about three weeks ago to have the right bait.
01:05:26They knew those tags would be the one thing in the world to get him off the field during the game.
01:05:31They were sure right, weren't they?
01:05:34But instead of a blonde, back in the tunnel were two other guys.
01:05:37Al Bates and a man named Walt Hicks,
01:05:40a slightly over-the-hill pro playing in a Canadian league.
01:05:43Of course, as soon as Hank moved into the tunnel, he knew something was wrong.
01:05:46It was too late.
01:05:49Bates had an army car with general stars on it.
01:05:51He told the stadium guards that he was there to pick up General So-and-so.
01:05:55So at halftime, they let him park his army car wherever he wanted.
01:05:59And where he wanted was right near the mouth of that tunnel.
01:06:02And Ives left the stadium the same way Hicks had arrived.
01:06:06Then they took him to the deserted army post that Bates had broken into.
01:06:11Meanwhile, Hicks had come back out of the tunnel.
01:06:15So you're saying that Walt Hicks became Hank Ives?
01:06:19The same general size and build?
01:06:21You put on a helmet with a face mask, let him wear Hank's number.
01:06:25Why would anybody think it wasn't Hank?
01:06:28Also, Hicks had studied Hank's moves.
01:06:30Well, who hasn't?
01:06:32Every high school kid in the country is trying to copy your style.
01:06:36Somebody must have seen it wasn't Hank.
01:06:38Who?
01:06:39He didn't come out of that tunnel until the offensive team took to the field.
01:06:43In the huddle, everyone's looking at the quarterback, Mulligan.
01:06:47He saw to that.
01:06:48And on the first play, he sends Hicks out wide on a flanker so no one's near him at all.
01:06:52Anyhow, on the next play, he calls the reverse, cues his actor, and they pull the disappearing act.
01:06:58Well, how'd I disappear?
01:07:01I mean, you know, the other me.
01:07:04Give me a hand, will you, Clay?
01:07:05Now, remember, Hicks was hit by four guys, dressed in white with blue trim.
01:07:12They really buried him.
01:07:14Wolinski, Mangene, Fabian, and Fellows.
01:07:17All guys who got one, maybe two years left as a pro.
01:07:21All guys who could use a couple extra thousand for what they thought was a great publicity stunt.
01:07:25Then, in the middle of the pileup, custom breakaway.
01:07:37Stick this under a jersey.
01:07:40And all you got left, turn around, Clay, is a helmet and a football.
01:07:47You mean Hicks stood up, pretended to be one of his own tacklers, and then started looking for himself?
01:07:53That's it.
01:07:55But why didn't the picture show that four guys hit him and five men got off the pile?
01:07:59Because right then, Mulligan pulled his limping routine, his famous glass knee,
01:08:04and all the eyes in the house, including the television and movie cameras,
01:08:08were watching Mulligan's play acting.
01:08:11The tackle was staged to happen on the cougar sidelines.
01:08:14So during Mulligan's diversion, the last guy in the pileup peeled off
01:08:19and pretended he was one of the cougars who'd gotten away with the action.
01:08:22And in a sense, the greatest play Ritchie Mulligan ever called.
01:08:26Then the gun sounds, it's halftime, and Hicks gets lost in the crowd.
01:08:31But why?
01:08:32Why what?
01:08:33Why did they do it, or why did they do it that way?
01:08:35Well, both.
01:08:37Well, they did it for two million dollars, and they would have gotten it, too.
01:08:40You and the rest of the owners are ready to come up with it, right?
01:08:43I guess so.
01:08:44And they did it that way because if Hank hadn't come out of that tunnel,
01:08:48you'd have known about it in five minutes and had every policeman in New England
01:08:51looking for an army card that left the stadium about that time.
01:08:55Well, it seems to me that must be an easier way to pull off a kidnapping.
01:08:59Maybe.
01:08:59But remember, except for the time that he was on the field,
01:09:04Hank had your arm bodyguarded his elbow.
01:09:07Anyway, I think Mulligan liked the whole idea of pulling it off this way.
01:09:11He always was a grandstander.
01:09:13The other players were told it was an elaborate prank, and they were paid.
01:09:18When the ransom note came in, Fabian realized it wasn't a joke
01:09:21and decided to blow the whistle.
01:09:23They found out about it and killed him.
01:09:24like they were going to kill you and Ives.
01:09:27Mm-hmm.
01:09:29Remember that.
01:09:30It raises my fee, 50,000.
01:09:32What are you talking about?
01:09:34The policy was half a million for non-performance.
01:09:36Ten percent of that is 50,000.
01:09:38Period.
01:09:39If they were going to kill him, that makes the payoff a million.
01:09:42You know my address.
01:09:45And you thought it was me.
01:09:47How could I ever?
01:09:49Well.
01:09:51Oh.
01:09:54You do take care of business, don't you?
01:09:58I'll tell you something, though.
01:10:00I'm not sure they're going to be strong enough
01:10:02to keep Clay Mills out of the starting lineup.
01:10:04I wouldn't bet on it.
01:10:05Right on, Banachek.
01:10:07You Banachek?
01:10:09Yeah, I'm Banachek.
01:10:10Well, there's some brunette waiting for you in the tunnel.
01:10:12Thanks.
01:10:13Thanks.
01:10:13Thanks.
01:10:24Hi.
01:10:41Are you sure you're waiting for a mate?
01:10:45Look.
01:10:47He's a very important part of my life.
01:10:49Just knowing he's alive is all I need to know about him.
01:10:52I know everything else.
01:10:53But I don't know anything about you.
01:11:03Well.
01:11:07I was born in this humble log cabin in Kentucky.
01:11:11I remember laying by the fireside and studying my law books.
01:11:16Well, during the day, I used to chop logs for railroad ties.
01:11:19Then one day, I ran out of logs.
01:11:23And I cut down this cherry tree with my axe.
01:11:26And my father said to me, he was very angry.
01:11:29He said, Banachek, did you cut down this cherry tree?
01:11:32He always called me Banachek.
01:11:34And I said, Father, I cannot tell a lie.
01:11:37Tommy Jefferson did it.
01:11:38I don't know.
01:11:39I don't know.
01:11:39I don't know.
01:11:39He's gonna be a man.
01:11:40He's gonna be.
01:11:41I don't know.
01:11:41I don't know.
01:11:43He's gonna be a man.
01:11:43He's gonna be a man.
01:11:44So I brauchen his he's gonna be a man.
01:11:44And I couldn't believe in you.
01:11:45So I don't know.
01:11:45Yeah, that's not about it.
01:11:47And I said, I was a man.
01:11:48I said, I'm not a man.
01:11:48I said, I was a man.
01:11:48Tchau, tchau.
