00:00Restauranteurs know keeping customers happy is a key ingredient to good business.
00:07And so when it comes to food safety, cleanliness is a priority.
00:11And as part of what you do for the community and what you serve, being clean is the utmost importance.
00:17Last financial year, inspectors handed prohibition orders to 26 businesses,
00:23requiring them to close until they pass another inspection.
00:27The previous year, there were just seven, despite a similar number of inspections.
00:32For Alex Nachera, keeping a clean slate is essential.
00:36You want to make sure that the food is obviously in date,
00:39it's being respected and prepared properly, and then cooked properly and served properly.
00:45Food safety inspections are conducted regularly, often unannounced.
00:50In the four years Mr Nachera has run his Hackett business, he's had just one visit from an inspector.
00:56If there's a pattern, well then obviously those places should be looked at.
01:00But I don't believe the ones that are doing the right thing should be constantly looked at either.
01:05The ACT government hasn't said why there's been a surge in prohibitions,
01:08but says businesses are closed when they present an imminent and significant risk to public health,
01:13or if they've repeatedly broken the rules.
01:16Though unlike New South Wales, there's no public register for breaches.
01:20If it's somewhere you wish to eat at or shop at, you don't know what the problem is.
01:25If we moved across the border into Queenbeyan or Yass, where we're in New South Wales,
01:30they have the name and shame list.
01:32It'd be good to know, for sure, so you can stay away from them.
01:35If you're putting people's lives at risk, being sick, gastro, etc., why not advertise to people not to go there?
01:42If the inspectors go there and have reached that little sticker on the front of the door telling us, you know,
01:49this is a healthy place.
01:51For businesses, a simple solution is to toe the line.
01:54Unless it's to a massive cost that's unattainable, it's not hard to comply.
02:00A recipe for success.
