00:00All right fellas, y'all had your instructions in the dressing room.
00:05Obey my commands at all times, protect yourself at all times.
00:08Touch them up.
00:16Fifteen amateur titles for Julius Ballo, USA Boxing Athlete of the Year.
00:22He'll be taking on Brandon Ayala who is 2-0 with one knockout.
00:26The cousin of Johnny Magic, Mansour, who's a 140-pound prospect, 5-0 out of San Diego, California as well.
00:35Bernardo Osuna alongside Mark Kriegel.
00:39And Ballo's a story that is different.
00:43He comes from money, Mark.
00:45He doesn't need to box yet.
00:46He loves to box because his father didn't get a chance to box.
00:50Really interesting story.
00:51I mean, he's collected a lot of national championships on the way.
00:56And this debut here was postponed after a hand injury.
01:00But his parents are both Iraqi immigrants, each of whom came to San Diego when they were about 10 years old.
01:08Met independently.
01:09The father earned his fortune.
01:11And here he is.
01:12His son's a fighter.
01:14Not the customary back story for a prized prospect.
01:18But he must be pretty good because he's managed by the estimable James Prince.
01:25He don't invest in chumps.
01:27Absolutely.
01:27And Julius' father, Julius, is living vicariously through him.
01:32He says, my dad wouldn't allow me to pursue a boxing career, so I was going to have a son and support him every step of the way.
01:40Little did he know he was actually going to be as successful as Julius has been in the amateur ranks.
01:45And now he wants that to translate into the pro ranks in his pro debut.
01:49It's a new twist on the American dream.
01:51But you can also see how really fluent Juju, as he's called, is with that left hand hooking off the jab.
01:59How quick that lead shot comes out.
02:03Jab.
02:04And he just started with a lead right and left, and now a left hook right on the face of Brandon Ayala, who takes it well here in the early going of this first round.
02:14I think what distinguishes him, you can see already, is hand speed.
02:18Yeah.
02:18Absolutely.
02:19You can see the quickness, good footwork as well.
02:21He says, I admire several fighters.
02:23Mayweather for the IQ, Pacquiao for the footwork, Inouye for his explosiveness, and Crawford for his elusiveness.
02:29So, if you build a fighter around those tenets, I mean, that's like a miracle fighter.
02:34Oh.
02:35Looks like Ayala touched with the glove, but it was kind of a cuffing shot and a pull down from Julius Vala.
02:46Vala walking in without that jab, and he ends up paying the prices.
02:50Vala's quick at the 1-2.
02:51It is kind of funny, because it does test the proposition that we almost take for granted that a guy has to be almost physically hungry, you know, and deprived to be a championship caliber fighter.
03:06Very few of those.
03:07Marco Antonio Barrera comes to mind.
03:08His father was well-established in Mexico.
03:11I don't know, but Vala says, I don't fall prey to all the flash that you see on social media with combined over a million followers among all his social media platforms.
03:23Almost as many as you, Mark.
03:25Yes.
03:25I got like a 12.
03:26Nice straight right there.
03:28And Vala will close out a great first round for the fight out of San Diego.
03:33He'll listen in to his trainer, Berlin Kearney.
03:37Good.
03:38Good first round.
03:38How you feeling?
03:39Like normal, right?
03:41All right, good job.
03:42All right, listen.
03:43I need you to be patient.
03:44Yeah, yeah, but look.
03:45Don't jump on him like that.
03:46Be patient.
03:47Keep that jab to the body.
03:49Keep that straight to the body, and roll out after.
03:52I like the defense.
03:53The defense up is very good.
03:54Good high guard.
03:55But when you exchange, exchange, roll under with the high guard, and especially when you guys pull apart, hit that body.
04:01Give me a little more body work.
04:02I need another boxing round like that, all right?
04:04Fast speed is very important.
04:06Be patient, too.
04:07Clear out with the fast speed.
04:09Good step back.
04:09Hey, be a little more patient, okay?
04:11Clear out a little bit.
04:13Don't let them touch you, and keep going to the body.
04:15The right hand will come through again, but give me one more round of that.
04:18All right, beautiful.
04:20All right, left hand up.
04:20Beautiful work, son.
04:21Yeah, another patient round like that, okay?
04:26If you look Julius Ballo up on social media, you'll see him flashing private jets, nice watches, great kicks.
04:35Shoes almost as nice as Mark Kregels.
04:37And he says, look, that's just flash, but when I'm in the ring, I turn into a different guy.
04:43I become a beast.
04:45Well, he's a young beast.
04:46It's peculiar in that, you know, the standard for youth, at least in this promotion, has always been Xander Zayas, who was signed, of course, nice jab to the body.
04:57He was signed, of course, when he was 16, long before he could fight in this country.
05:01But you look at Xander, he's filled out.
05:03He looks like a man.
05:05You know, Julius here looks like a kid, even though he's the same age as Xander, 22.
05:11Absolutely.
05:13There's a true baby face.
05:14Yeah, nice left hook there from Ayala.
05:17He's a little bit more comfortable now sitting on his punches.
05:23Ayala has a much bigger frame.
05:25Five-inch reach advantage as well.
05:28Two and a half inches in height.
05:29And I think that's how fluent Valo's lead hand is, is that he scored a lot of jabs without you noticing the difference in reach.
05:42Nice exchange there.
05:43Good counters by Ayala and then a good finishing right from Julius Valo.
05:48Seems like Valo let Ayala take the lead there during the first half of this second round.
05:53Well, his trainer, Berlin Kearney, was really outspoken.
06:02Patience, patience, patience.
06:03That's the most difficult thing for young fighters to be.
06:07Yeah, I mean, you could imagine.
06:08Especially when you're coming out, you know, it's your debut.
06:11Yeah, I mean, the adrenaline must be pumping through the veins of Julius Valo right now, so trying to keep calm as the three-fight veteran now, Brandon Ayala, is pretty calm in there.
06:21Trying to use his length from the outside and make Julius Valo work his way in.
06:25Nice jab sets up an overhand right from Julius Valo.
06:35You see the quick hand speed, but then the counters from Ayala, who says, hey, I'm here to fight.
06:44Break.
06:45I'll break.
06:50Ayala ain't bad, man.
06:52And he says, look, I need to be aggressive to see how Valo handles the pressure here.
06:57He brought in his sparring partner, Jamal Harvey, who Valo beat as an amateur.
07:01And just to put into perspective how good Juju Valo was as an amateur, he has wins over Stephen Navarro and Emiliano Vargas, both fighters on this car tonight.
07:12I think the world is keeping the ball.
07:15But he's fighting tonight at 115.
07:18Nice body weight from Valo.
07:19Overhand right from Ayala.
07:22So this round, while Valo threw a lot of shots, Ayala had answers as well.
07:29I'm not sure I give Ayala that.
07:31Time!
07:34But he did put up a hell of a fight.
07:36And he did take it to him.
07:38I'm just, I continue to be ingressed.
07:40Right now you elected to stay in that position for no reason.
07:43You don't really need to bang right there.
07:46But that's his only chance to really land anything significant on you.
07:49So you shoot, and I'm not telling you to run, you can hold a line, but when you put yourself in a compromised position, don't stay there just to bang with him.
07:56That's the only way he can reach you.
07:57That's the only way he can reach you.
07:58Just think about that.
07:59Why do that?
08:00Doesn't make any sense.
08:01All right?
08:02Shoot the body a little bit more with the straight.
08:04Up jab a little bit.
08:05Give me a flick jab.
08:06You got the arms.
08:07You got the gloves.
08:08You can hit.
08:09Hit the arms.
08:10Hit the gloves.
08:11You don't have to shoot the jab from so far.
08:12Keep it simple.
08:13Pull the line just a little bit.
08:14Rotate.
08:15Rotate.
08:16One small step.
08:17Very simple, okay?
08:18You're smart.
08:19You're being smart.
08:20Yeah, a little smart.
08:21Be smart.
08:22Don't give him no favors.
08:24Let's go!
08:25Let's go!
08:26Let's go!
08:27Let's go!
08:28Julius Ballow brought out a big contingent of fans here to the MSG Theater in New York.
08:33He was supposed to debut on March 22nd at the Pechanga or Sequoia out there in San Diego, California.
08:41That would have been a sellout crowd, but that's a nice leaping left hook to start off round number
08:46three for Ballow.
08:50Quick hands from Ballow again.
08:53First to the target despite the two and a half inch reach disadvantage.
09:01I don't know what kind of power Juju has, but he has extraordinary accuracy.
09:07And timing as well.
09:08And in the amateurs, he was one of those rare guys that would stop opponents with body shots.
09:13We haven't seen that yet in this fight, but you can see how quick he is with that right hand.
09:18Cobra quick.
09:19And Ayala is testing him.
09:21He's not cooperating here.
09:23And he's the exact opposite kind of fighters.
09:27from North Carolina, not a hotbed of boxing, but he's not playing the role here that says he has to acquiesce.
09:37He's a machine press operator at a Ford factory.
09:41They make parts for models from 1914 to 1961.
09:45Wakes up at 5 a.m.
09:46Goes straight to work until 4.
09:47I'd see him again.
09:485 to 10.
09:49Yeah.
09:50I'd see him again, man.
09:51He's undefeated.
09:522-0 with one knockout.
09:54But once he's in the ring, he goes to work as well.
09:58But you could see the pedigree.
10:00He said, I'm not going to be intimidated by this young man's pedigree.
10:03But you could just see the ability in Julius Ballo.
10:07And the poise for being his first fight as a pro.
10:11Nice leaping jab from Ballo.
10:14And then he gets out of arm's way.
10:16Ayala coming forward and then Ballo at the answer.
10:21He can do so much with that lead hand.
10:23We just saw a body shot.
10:25There's the jab that quickly becomes a hook.
10:27We saw that lead, that lead hook.
10:29The stab jab to the body right there.
10:31A lot of stuff you can do with that lead hand.
10:33Despite the deficit in reach.
10:38Quick foot feint there from Julius Ballo.
10:40Doesn't get Ayala to bite.
10:41And Ayala lands an overhand right as Ballo was missing with his shots.
10:45A nice left uppercut from Ayala.
10:56Ayala has an uppercut when Juju comes in.
10:58But he's just, he's so quick.
11:00And he ate that jab.
11:02You got to get rid of that thing real fast.
11:04Now you can't wait to admire your work against Ballo.
11:07Because he's so quick.
11:09Break, break.
11:12He's got those fast twitch monsters, Mark.
11:16Absolutely.
11:17He just was off the mark on that right hand was Ballo.
11:21But a grazing shot on Ayala.
11:23Another good third round here from Julius Ballo.
11:27He's not at home, it just sounds that way.
11:30Time.
11:31Very simple, Mark.
11:32Listen.
11:33Don't try to hurt him.
11:34Everything you're doing is natural.
11:35I can tell when you're not letting it flow.
11:36You're trying to sit down and it slows you down.
11:37And you're showing.
11:38Don't worry about that.
11:39Focus, man.
11:40Make it hard for him.
11:41You understand what I'm saying?
11:42Last round, touch him up in the center.
11:43Only time you get hit is when you make the mistake to try to sit on some stuff.
11:49Just make it simple, man.
11:50If it's going to come, it's going to come, baby.
11:51Beautiful words.
11:52Beautiful words.
11:53This could just be for one shot.
11:54This could just be for one shot.
11:55This could just happen, baby.
11:56Hey.
11:57Beautiful.
11:58The Ballo family rolls deep.
12:01Coming out here to the MSG Theater in New York.
12:03Showing support.
12:04Don't worry about that.
12:05Focus, man.
12:06Don't worry about that.
12:07Focus, man.
12:08Make it hard for him.
12:09You understand what I'm saying?
12:10Last round, touch him up in the center.
12:11Only time you get hit is when you make the mistake to try to sit on some stuff.
12:13Just make it simple, man.
12:14If it's going to come, it's going to come, baby.
12:15Beautiful words.
12:16This could just be smart.
12:17Beautiful words.
12:18This could just be smart.
12:19Beautiful words.
12:20The MSG Theater in New York.
12:21Showing support for the 22-year-old, who is the USA Boxing Athlete of the Year, number
12:26one amateur boxer in the US, 15-time national champion.
12:31He looks to earn his first bout.
12:34Box!
12:35His victory as a professional in his opening bout here at the MSG Theater.
12:39Quick right hand from Brandon Ayala, who's not bad himself at 2-0 with one knockout.
12:45He heard Ballos coach Berlin Kearney again.
12:49He's trying to teach him what we've seen again and again for young fighters.
12:54He's so hard.
12:55When you try to summon the power, that's what it does in Connie.
12:59He told him, if it's going to come, it'll come.
13:01That's it.
13:02Just let it go, man.
13:03I'll tell my golfing buddies how much you pay for that driver.
13:06500 bucks, let it do its job.
13:08You know?
13:09Let it come to you.
13:10That's the hardest thing to do.
13:12But again, especially when you're young, when it's your debut, when you're...
13:17Ooh, nice counter with a left from Julius Fallon.
13:20He allowed Ayala to walk right into that shot.
13:23When you're coming up with a big name, you want to show everybody.
13:26You want to get it all in in one shot.
13:28On one knife.
13:29And you can't.
13:30Not always.
13:33Nice lead right from Ballos.
13:38Nice overhand right.
13:39Ooh.
13:40Ayala goes to the southpaw stats and gets flipped by a strong overhand right from Julius Ballos.
13:49That's knowing what to do, man.
13:54Ayala tried to throw him off and he's like, thank you for setting up for my right.
13:58And he hit him low and then high.
14:03Came over the top.
14:04Here's the chants of Juju here at the theater at MSG.
14:23Ayala trying to close out strong.
14:26But there's that stiff up jab from Julius Ballos.
14:31He's got a lot of tricks in the book for a 22-year-old making his pro debut.
14:39Ooh, that was a great overhand right once again.
14:44And he ducks down and connects it perfectly.
14:46But Ayala able to take the shot and land the right of his own.
14:50To me, the really beautiful moment of the fight for Ballos was Ayala turning southpaw.
14:57He knew exactly what to do right then.
14:59There was no decision making.
15:01It just came naturally.
15:05And he went out the back door.
15:15That's nice four piece.
15:17That's nice.
15:18Quick hands from Julius Ballos.
15:19And he's not there for Ayala's counter.
15:22That's where the lowest success Ayala had was on the counter.
15:25And Ballos stayed very disciplined this fight.
15:28Good opening debut for Julius Ballos here on top-ranked boxing on ESPN.
15:34I got a shutout.
15:35What do you got?
15:36Yeah, it could either be 4-0 or 3.
15:38You give him that second?
15:39I did it, but I'll put a little circle around it to make sure that if there's any round that
15:45went Brandon Ayala's way, it was going to be that second round.
15:48Overall impressions of Julius Ballos.
15:50Great fast hands.
15:53Extraordinary instincts.
15:56I wouldn't worry about the knockout or not.
15:59Sky's the limit, man.
16:01Here we go.
16:03You see that lead left hand.
16:07The accuracy of the right.
16:10And look at him.
16:12Look at the defense catching those shots with his right hand.
16:17Working in until he gets what he wants.
16:22Working his way in.
16:26Letting the jab do the work.
16:28Letting the lead hand do the work.
16:31Swivel shot.
16:34And again, it wasn't Ayala being a bad fighter or being a chump.
16:39He fought well.
16:41He absolutely did.
16:43And you see the family of Julius Ballos there.
16:46So happy with his pro debut.
16:48That's a young-looking 22-year-old kid, right?
16:50Absolutely.
16:51I mean, you look at this young man and what he's already accomplished in the sport.
16:56There he goes.
16:57He says, hey fam, give me some love because I came out here to perform.
17:00I came out here to perform for every one of you.
17:02You have to wait for March 22 after the hand injury till today.
17:06And this is for all of you.
17:08The family's out here.
17:10His dad is in the ring with him, living vicariously through him.
17:14And Yasir Ballo and Julius Ballo.
17:17That's a duo you'll be hearing about in the future.
17:20Ralph Vettler Jr. has the official decision.
17:22Ladies and gentlemen, after four rounds of action, we go to the judges' scorecards.
17:30All three judges, Bernard Bruni, Georgie Jergoff and Marcel Varela score the contest 42-36.
17:40All for your winner by unanimous decision.
17:45From San Diego, California, Julius Juju Ballo.
17:57Juju gets the first of what we expect would be many victories as a professional, making his family proud.
18:04And you see just how happy this young man is to do it here at the theater at MSG.
18:10And what a show it has been.
