00:00Good evening, everyone. I'm Tim Gunn.
00:07Tonight, I'm very excited to share with you some of my personal and unedited insider views on Season 9 of Project Runway.
00:15And you know that I can't help myself. I'm a truth teller.
00:19I'm going to share my raw opinions. That includes what I loved and appreciated about the show, as well as my disappointments and some frustrations.
00:28I will also reveal some of Project Runway's best-kept behind-the-scenes secrets.
00:33After nine seasons, it's time to pull back the veil a little bit and let our loyal fans see how we do things around here.
00:40This is Project Runway Behind the Seams.
00:43Well, another season of Project Runway has drawn to an end, and we've crowned our ninth winner.
00:50Congratulations. You are the winner of Project Runway.
00:54I give my heartfelt congratulations to Anya for securing that win. It was no small feat.
01:00And I want to share with you, had it been up to me, Anya wouldn't have made it past the audition process.
01:05So it shows what I know and what I don't know.
01:07I'm horrified.
01:08What are you horrified by, Tim?
01:10You are handicapped, in a manner of speaking, by not having the sewing skills to execute the work.
01:15Or she might be really good.
01:17What I love about Project Runway, for me personally, is my relationship with the designers.
01:22I have such tremendous respect for them.
01:24And as many of you may know, I spent 29 years as a teacher.
01:29And for me, the Project Runway workroom is an extension of the classroom for me.
01:34I forget about the cameras altogether.
01:36For me, it's that one-on-one moment that I have with the designers.
01:40And they keep me up all night worrying about whether they're going to finish.
01:45I get to a point where I don't even care who wins or loses.
01:48It's more about, just finish your work, everybody.
01:51And we certainly had a lot of that this season.
01:54Anya, what's going on?
01:55It's going over a bit.
01:56Get her into that right now.
01:57In ten minutes, you and your models and I are going down to the runway.
02:02And one of you is still in the sewing room.
02:05Oh.
02:06Anya.
02:07I know, I know, I know, I know.
02:09I'm calling time.
02:10Aye, aye.
02:11Let's go, go, go right now.
02:14And I have to also tell you, I'm very, very careful to only talk to the designers about things that they can change.
02:21If they can't change it, then why bother wasting time talking about it?
02:26And owing to the fact that I do feel so close to them, it's very hard and very emotional for me when someone does have to go.
02:33And I want to share with you some of the moments that are nearest and dearest to me.
02:38Let's have a look.
02:39We want you to succeed.
02:40We do the best we can under the conditions.
02:42We do the best we can.
02:44All right?
02:45I feel like I'm not even a designer right now.
02:47I'm just like really disappointed.
02:48No, you're going to be fine.
02:50I feel pretty confident about this.
02:51Okay.
02:52But you're always telling me you feel confident.
02:55I leave you feeling confident.
02:56And then I see it on the runway and I think, oh my God.
02:59Okay.
03:00What do I know about it?
03:01I just know it's a bra size.
03:02Okay.
03:03I don't have any personal experience with it, Oliver.
03:04We can't want you to succeed more than you do.
03:05Yes.
03:06And if your heart and soul aren't here, then it's not going to work for you.
03:20That's exciting.
03:21Can you all join hands for me?
03:23Join hands.
03:24Joshua.
03:25Circle.
03:26It's a beautiful silhouette.
03:27Beautiful proportions.
03:28Right.
03:29Quite frankly, rather sublime.
03:31You just gave me chills.
03:32You gave me chills too.
03:33We're going to miss you.
03:34I know.
03:35I'll miss you too.
03:36It's hard.
03:37I know.
03:38It's just one of those days.
03:39I don't want you to have one of those days.
03:40I want you to be on top.
03:41I'm your cheerleader.
03:42I'm coming around.
03:43You need a hug.
03:44Oh, Tim.
03:45You do.
03:46I always like your hugs.
03:47You know, in these times, you usually have your support system, and so for Tim to be
04:04that right now in this moment, it's very emotional for me.
04:08All right.
04:09Yes.
04:10Keep your eye on this.
04:11You can do it.
04:12Okay, thanks.
04:13Right.
04:14My visit here is to help support you, help give you a reality check.
04:19You need it because you're at a juncture now where there just isn't time.
04:25Tim!
04:26Hey!
04:27Come in!
04:28Come in!
04:30Just having him here is just over the top.
04:33I'm so excited.
04:34You have no idea.
04:35It's time for tough love, and it's because I do love you, and I care about you, and I
04:40want each of you to succeed, and I want the judges to have the most difficult time possible
04:44determining who the winner is.
04:46So, final four, let's have a group hug.
04:49Yes!
04:50How exciting is this?
04:52Congratulations to...
04:54I got a kid!
04:55Well, it's always an adjustment for me when the season is over, and I'm not with the designers
05:04every day.
05:05They're sort of like my kids in a manner of speaking, though I could be their grandfather.
05:10Every season has its own identity and its own place in my heart, frankly, and season
05:15nine is no different.
05:16In fact, it's one of my favorite seasons in Project Runway history, and I'm going to
05:20share with you why.
05:21For one thing, the diversity and the aesthetic of the designers was equal to the diversity
05:25of the personalities.
05:26There's some seasons when we have over-the-top design and humdrum personalities, or the inverse.
05:32Another thought is that, at least for me, there wasn't a villain this season.
05:37I mean, there were a few people who were a little difficult to take, but we really didn't
05:41have a plotting, crafting villain.
05:44And a moment that I'll never get over was when the judges had the wisdom and the prudence
05:51to send all four finalists to Fashion Week.
05:54Thank you, judges!
05:55Oh my God!
05:56Thank you!
05:57But what I love most about season nine is the fact that it was a season of firsts.
06:01Let's take a look.
06:02For the first time ever on Project Runway, your fashion show will take place out of the
06:06first.
06:07It will take place outside in front of a live audience and the press.
06:10It hasn't been done on this show before, and to be a part of the first public runway
06:14makes me completely speechless.
06:16So you're designing for me!
06:21I mean, never in the history of Project Runway has this challenge of dressing Nina ever
06:27happened.
06:28We're going to be the first.
06:29Designers, in the history of Project Runway, I have never needed to deliver a
06:35these lines in the sewing room.
06:36You have a ton of work to do.
06:37I'm really alarmed.
06:38Honestly, I'm sweating through my suit.
06:39So you can choose anyone that has been eliminated to come back and be on your team.
06:50And they also will be in the competition again.
06:52Welcome, Josh, back to the competition!
06:54I lost my money.
06:55I lost my money.
06:56You lost your money?
06:57Yeah.
06:58Oh, Anya.
06:59Yeah.
07:00Is another Project Runway first?
07:01It's never happened.
07:02It is.
07:03I would be the first one.
07:04I thought Brit would be the first one.
07:06Today, we're having our first ever rock concert right here on the runway.
07:10Woo-hoo!
07:11Never had a hurt.
07:12I'm on a stepping run, yeah.
07:17The kids are all here.
07:19Finally, this is the first time in Project Runway history.
07:22Yes!
07:23For the first time ever, I have created what I'm calling the Tim Gunn Awards.
07:29These are awards for the designers, and all of them have been very well earned.
07:34We'll show you who won what as the night progresses.
07:37Let's take a look at the first award.
07:43Yay!
07:44And the first award goes to Kimberly.
07:47Come forward, Kimberly.
07:49Do you have any idea what you're winning this award for?
07:53I don't know.
07:54I don't know.
07:55Best chance?
07:57That could have been.
07:59Kimberly, your award is for most likely to be running out of the workroom at the last minute.
08:03How about that?
08:06For you.
08:07And let's have a look.
08:09So let's go.
08:10Off the mood.
08:11Run, run, run.
08:12We are leaving for the runway.
08:14Kimberly, Kenya.
08:15I'm putting it on her so that she can wear it if she doesn't have it.
08:18But we've got to go, go, go.
08:23Kimberly, you're the last.
08:26There you go.
08:28It was a fashion show, too.
08:32That's hilarious.
08:33Congratulations, Kimberly.
08:35No one does a workroom run like you.
08:38Thank you, Tim.
08:39She gives good workroom run.
08:40I accept this award.
08:43Anthony, Ryan, the next award is for you.
08:49That's good.
08:50Don't be.
08:51It's a lovely thing.
08:52Your award is for the designer who was most cheated out of a win.
08:57Oh.
08:58And do you know what it was for?
09:00About?
09:01Birdseed.
09:02Birdseed.
09:03Birdseed.
09:05Birdseed.
09:07I have to tell you, I'm all over the country and all people want to talk about is your birdseed dress.
09:12Everybody loved it.
09:13Hell yeah.
09:14So congratulations.
09:18Coming up on Project Runway, Behind the Seams.
09:21Now I'm going to let you in on one of our runway secrets.
09:24And later...
09:25What do you think about Oliver?
09:27He didn't like boobs.
09:28I just think that's ridiculous.
09:31Message to Oliver.
09:32We need boobs.
09:38Every season we have our successes and our failures when it comes to how the designers perform in given challenges.
09:45There are times when the designers surprise us in a wonderful and thrilling way.
09:49And there are times when they surprise us in a what were you thinking way.
09:54There were two challenges that stood out as being spectacular, at least to me.
09:59The first was the pet store challenge.
10:01I love the unconventional materials challenges.
10:03So we took the designers to a pet store to shop for their materials.
10:09And it was raucous, it was wild, and we had some really thrilling outcomes.
10:19Then the bird challenge.
10:21I loved our birds.
10:23Their personalities were even bigger and more over the top than the designers' personalities.
10:29And what was really thrilling about it was not knowing where the designers were going to take it.
10:33For the wow, that really went wrong challenges.
10:45Oh, the sheepdogs, our male rock group.
10:48Boy, those guys were such troopers wearing those horrible, hideous clothes.
10:56We wanted the designers to get a kind of 70s hippie vibe, but instead it was just plain dull doldrums.
11:02Then the stilts challenge.
11:05I was so excited about this.
11:10It's the first time in Project Runway history that we've had an outdoor challenge for the public.
11:14We're always doing things under cover of darkness, but in this case we were out full and bold.
11:20But we had a big hot mess.
11:23I mean, I really thought that this was a great opportunity for the designers to design for what's quite literally an elongated figure.
11:30But the challenge just turned out to be very costumey and very freaky and uber tall.
11:37Now I'm going to let you in on one of our runway secrets.
11:42The stilts challenge.
11:44This was our outdoor runway for episode three.
11:47Raphael and Josh Christensen had already been eliminated.
11:51And since we were in public and there was press there, we had to put them in the audience.
11:55You can see them sitting on the end with the rest of the designers.
11:58We also had the two of them pair up and make a garment to send down the outdoor runway.
12:03Just so it looked like everyone was still in the game.
12:06I have to be honest, their look was one of the worst in Project Runway history.
12:13And I'm not sure if they were making a joke or not.
12:16When I went to check in on them, like I do with the other designers, they were watching television.
12:21It was clear to me at that point that the first two designers out were the first two designers who should have gone out.
12:36Now I want to talk about the biggest fad that baffled me on season nine, the fabric dyeing fad.
12:43There was more dyeing of fabric on this season of the show than in the history of Project Runway.
12:49Let's take a look.
12:50Now in the designer's lounge, we have dyes and dyeing bins. Wow them.
12:57I can dye and make this all work for him.
12:59Could you dye this?
13:00But I haven't dyed very much before. Now everything has to change.
13:04I have not done any tie dyeing since about 1972.
13:07Oh, hey, electricity.
13:09That's not good.
13:10Pretty quick.
13:11I'm tie dyeing this.
13:13Oh, God.
13:15I dyed it this. It's like a marine blue.
13:18It seems like there's a lot of purple going on.
13:20I've dyed everything like three times so far and I've got to dye it again.
13:24I actually got the tank and tie dyed that as well. So I just dyed as well.
13:28I think it looks like he cut himself shaving.
13:31It's a little Sweeney Todd tie dye.
13:36I'm going to dye these.
13:39At this moment, I'm dyeing the dog pads.
13:42What is this?
13:43This is a lot of wee-wee pads.
13:48And as you may have noticed, we had plastic drop cloths everywhere to protect the floors,
13:52and I kept slipping.
13:54Now it's time for another award.
13:59Bert, the next award goes to you.
14:02And your award is for the most likely designer to ask the most questions about a challenge.
14:15I don't know about that.
14:17So let's take a look at this, Bert. Are there any questions?
14:21Can we start thinking about adjusterizing these?
14:24Your response to like prints and scale.
14:27Are we talking run-
14:29The winners are the captains or the losers are the captains?
14:32I just didn't know what-
14:33Because I got a feeling that we were talking modern and contemporary or-
14:37When will we get the measurements of their-
14:39They're here now.
14:40Okay, good.
14:41Do you remember anything Tim's saying not to use or to use?
14:44Something about fabric?
14:45No, he just said.
14:46But that was my quandary.
14:49Oh, come on.
14:50It really does.
14:52The next award goes to Anya.
14:53Yay!
14:56Anya, you are the hands-down winner of the Make It Work Award.
15:01Oh, thank you.
15:03I have to say, challenge after challenge, you never cease to amaze me with how you just
15:07pull it out of your hat.
15:08I amaze myself.
15:09And all the way to the very end.
15:12Yes.
15:13There were so many times when I thought, it's not going to happen.
15:16And you made it work.
15:18Constantly.
15:20This award is for you.
15:22Oh, I'm so honored.
15:23Thank you very much.
15:24Thank you so much.
15:27So, we're going to take a look.
15:28How did you learn how to sew?
15:29Actually, when I applied for this-
15:31You just learned how to sew.
15:34I'm baffled.
15:36So, that is four months ago.
15:37I am too.
15:38You learned how to sew four months ago.
15:40Let me see that.
15:41I think we should put her to the test.
15:44You haven't made pants before, either.
15:46It's the first one like this.
15:48Looks very good.
15:49She showed me this fabric.
15:50She said, this is a risk.
15:52Do we have a plan B?
15:53Um, oh, God.
15:56Could you dye this?
15:57Well, I haven't dyed very much before.
15:59Now everything has to change.
16:05I love the color that it turned out to be.
16:07What color is that?
16:10I lost my money.
16:11You can use muslin.
16:12They want to see something dynamic and fashion forward.
16:15Muslim is not any of those things.
16:18How'd that break you down?
16:2111.50.
16:24Anya, you are the winner of this challenge.
16:28There's that possibility that they're going to say, do we want to see the remaining seven looks?
16:33I don't know.
16:34It's the worst critique I've had.
16:36And now I don't know what to do.
16:37It's like I don't have any time to start over.
16:40I'm not the type to just give up.
16:42So, I have to stay strong.
16:45What?
16:46I love it!
16:47I love it!
16:48You are such a man!
16:52Anya.
16:55Congratulations.
16:56You are the winner of Project Runway.
17:00You made it work.
17:01Yes.
17:02Congratulations.
17:04Coming up on Project Runway Behind the Seams.
17:06So, how do we keep the finalists from being figured out by the fans and the press?
17:11As much as I love this season of Project Runway, I have one very big pet peeve.
17:17And later, you know what you all don't know?
17:19Or maybe you do know.
17:21Sorry.
17:27Welcome back, everyone.
17:29As much as I love this season of Project Runway,
17:32I have one very big pet peeve.
17:36Glue guns.
17:38I have never seen so much glue gunning in my entire life.
17:43They were everywhere doing everything.
17:46Glue guns are meant for embellishments.
17:48They're meant to touch things up.
17:50They are not meant to construct garments.
17:52Let's take a look at just how much of this went on.
17:56I loved all those little pieces.
17:58You know, you can always tell when designers do that.
18:00I mean, so much work.
18:01I guess most people probably think it's just, like, thrown on there and glued together.
18:05I did not hand sew any of that.
18:07It is all with the hot glue gun.
18:08Scrap what I said before.
18:13You guys, we are going to die if people use a lot of this glue.
18:15It's pretty heavy duty.
18:18I literally am gluing while she's wearing it.
18:21This is madness.
18:23Gluing to me is, like, cheating.
18:27It's not sewing.
18:28Like, if you go to a store and you buy a dress that's glued, would you buy it?
18:31No.
18:34You have glue?
18:35Yeah, sure.
18:36Everything I have is yours all the way.
18:37Aw, that's nice.
18:39You've actually glued the top to your model.
18:42Is that glue?
18:47Yikes.
18:52Next season, I hope to create a no glue gun at all rule.
18:57Or a rule that if the designers abuse it, will take it away.
19:01Also, we had entirely too much sewing a model into a garment this season.
19:07The designers were so pressed for time that they couldn't manage zippers or other forms of closure.
19:12That's going to go away, too.
19:14Anyway, we should change the subject before my blood starts to boil.
19:18Now, I'm often asked how we keep the winner and the finalists from being figured out by the fans and the press.
19:24I won't go into all of our little secrets on that, but I will say that we were very careful throughout shooting and while airing about keeping everyone tight-lipped.
19:34But when it comes to making the final collections, it's not that easy.
19:38We are much more vulnerable and out in the open.
19:41So, how do we keep the secret alive?
19:44Well, we have everyone who's still standing in the competition on the show during Fashion Week create a collection.
19:52We call them decoys.
19:55These eliminated designers get the same resources as the ones still competing, but they are no longer in the competition and they are not vying for the prize package.
20:03Rather, they create collections so that no one knows who's in and who's out.
20:08This season, we have Laura, Bert, Oliver, Anthony Ryan, and Bryce all create collections.
20:14Sometimes, the decoys surprise us with great collections.
20:18Bryce's collection was his most ambitious undertaking so far.
20:22He really pushed the envelope of innovation and experimentation, and I'm exceedingly proud of him.
20:28Bert is a classic American designer, and that's precisely what his collection said.
20:34It was beautifully designed and beautifully constructed.
20:37My question is, how relevant is it to 2011, 2012?
20:41I feel very proud of what Oliver achieved.
20:45He was smart to focus on his strengths, which happened to be superbly crafted tailoring techniques.
20:50His collection was fantastic.
20:53Anthony Ryan's collection was true to its DNA.
20:56It was youthful and high-spirited with just a touch of whimsy.
21:00It was fun.
21:01Laura's collection was magnificent.
21:04She thoroughly disarmed me with her neutral palette, with her sleek silhouettes, and with her greatly heightened level of sophistication.
21:12Frankly, I was wowed.
21:13Having the designers create collections is an expensive and very involved effort.
21:18But so far, doing this has helped us keep the surprise alive for our viewers.
21:23It's also been good for the designers.
21:25Now, it's time for another Tim Gunn Award.
21:32Laura, you are the winner of the best decoy collection for season nine.
21:38Thank you so much.
21:41I have to say, I even showed your collection to Nina, your toughest critic, and she loved it.
21:47That's amazing.
21:48Yeah, so congratulations.
21:49Thanks, Nina.
21:54My next award goes to two designers, Victor and Oliver.
22:02But wait a minute, it's the Time Management Award.
22:06Oh!
22:07Victor, you received this award for excellence in time management.
22:17Oliver, you received this award for not even having the remotest concept of what time management is.
22:27That's so touching.
22:28There was never a clock in your world.
22:29I didn't even know this dude.
22:30I didn't even know this dude.
22:33So let's take a look, gentlemen.
22:35Oliver?
22:36Yes?
22:37Two minutes and I'm serious.
22:39Oliver, he's a turtle.
22:41He takes a long time to do anything.
22:43Have we started on the pants?
22:44Oliver's pants still aren't done.
22:46He may just kill us all.
22:48You think Oliver's gonna be okay?
22:49If he gets upset when people tell him to go fast, no?
22:53You weren't quite finished.
22:54You were running out of time.
22:56Just waiting for the day when he sends his model down the runway and everything completely falls off of her.
23:02Woo!
23:04Fifteen minutes, everybody.
23:05Where's this old Victor ever needs to shop?
23:08You're very organized.
23:09Good.
23:10My looks are all finished.
23:11They're complete.
23:12And it seems like the other designers are still struggling.
23:14So that puts me already in a league.
23:17Fabulous.
23:18You have time management issues.
23:20You were going slow yesterday.
23:21I said it.
23:22See?
23:23You gotta go, go, go, go.
23:24Dude, is your skirt lined?
23:25Lined?
23:26Yeah.
23:27Oliver.
23:28I really don't feel like I have time management issue.
23:29It's gonna go out there naked.
23:32Oliver, no more sewing.
23:35Stop, stop, stop, stop.
23:36Well, you know what?
23:37I think I have enough.
23:38I'm gonna make me a tank top, too.
23:39Take that, Project Runway.
23:42Oh.
23:48Congratulations, gentlemen.
23:49Will accept it.
23:50Thank you so much.
23:51Thank you, too.
23:52Coming up on Project Runway Behind the Seams, I'm here with some of our designers from Season
23:579.
23:58I've missed you all.
23:59I'm so happy you're all here.
24:00I've missed you, too, too.
24:01So how are you?
24:02Good.
24:03Excellent.
24:04So I have been talking about how I feel about this day.
24:05I have been talking about this season.
24:06I'm very close to walking up to a producer and saying, I want to go home.
24:08My least favorite bit was probably...
24:09Deadlands.
24:10Yeah, yeah.
24:11Which was your favorite challenge so far?
24:12The 70s challenge.
24:13Oh.
24:14You can edit that one out.
24:15Welcome back.
24:16I'm here with some of our designers from Season 9.
24:18I've missed you all.
24:19I'm so happy you're all here.
24:20Missed you, too, too.
24:21So, how are you?
24:22Good.
24:23Excellent.
24:24So I've been talking about how I feel about this season.
24:28Now what I want to know is how you're feeling about it.
24:31What was your favorite and least favorite part of being on Project Runway?
24:37Me?
24:38Anya?
24:39I have lots of favorites, but I think especially being back all together reminds me how much I really enjoy getting to know all of, you know, the other designers and the friendships that we formed.
24:52I feel like I'm proud to say that I think our season had a really great sense of camaraderie.
24:57You did.
24:58Versus other seasons.
24:59I mean, and it was Outsider in the other seasons, but...
25:01I totally agree.
25:02I totally agree.
25:03I wish the viewers got to see more of who we are behind the scenes and how we interact with each other because we had a great time.
25:09Getting to know everybody is so wonderful.
25:11It's like I made so many friends from here and I think overall I think it was just an amazing experience just because I found who I was as a designer and I really found things that I never thought I would ever find.
25:24I'm thrilled to hear you say that.
25:26Yeah.
25:27My favorite is getting to work with probably some of the most talented people in the industry.
25:30Not just the designers sitting here, but yourself and Heidi and Michael and Nina.
25:34I would never get that any other place.
25:37You know, it was the biggest opportunity for me that's ever come along to actually come on this show.
25:41Well, my favorite part was just all these freedoms to create our own designs.
25:47Why are you all laughing?
25:49And it's just...
25:50Because you like it your way.
25:51And I thought that I learned a lot from other people.
25:54And my least favorite bit was probably...
25:57just...
25:58Deadlines.
25:59Yeah, yeah, yeah.
26:01That and big people.
26:03Food.
26:04Okay, no, no, no, no.
26:06My least favorite, I think, is when things didn't go so well.
26:10And like, you know, there was sometimes a lot of drama and...
26:13Sometimes?
26:14Well, yeah.
26:16I would have to say the same.
26:17The drama that went on, that is the only part I could do without.
26:20All right.
26:21Mm-hmm.
26:22Being thrown into the workroom experience I enjoyed the most, working with the other designers.
26:26It really carries you forward, realizing that sometimes we're working for 16, 18 hours a day.
26:31Did you work?
26:32I know.
26:33And now that I'm at home, it's like a half hour I'm into my working and it's like, oh, I want a day and a half or something.
26:37And I think, well, I used to do it.
26:39But without the other people around, it really pushes you.
26:42That's true.
26:43And knowing that you can do what we can do.
26:44Yeah.
26:45And for me, especially having not designed for years, because literally on the sleepwear challenge, I was this close to walking up to a producer and saying, I want to go home.
26:52You mean the first challenge?
26:53The very first challenge.
26:54I was like, I thought, I don't want to be here.
26:56I didn't know that.
26:57I didn't want to get out of here.
26:58I didn't know that.
26:59And something kept me from doing that.
27:01I just cut my underwear up and ironed it.
27:04And by the time I got through that, that feeling of fear had passed.
27:09And that was the last time I was fearful of being on the show.
27:12The least favorite was being eliminated, I think.
27:15I'd have to echo Bert's sentiments.
27:17My least favorite was being eliminated right before Lincoln Center.
27:20Like, what is this?
27:21No.
27:22All right.
27:23Now it's time to hear what the people who really count think.
27:27We sent Xana, Roberts, Rossi out on the street to find out.
27:32What?
27:33Have you watched this season of Project Runway?
27:36No.
27:37Good start.
27:40Steve, are you a fan of Project Runway?
27:42I'm a super fan of Project Runway.
27:44I'm a super fan of Project Runway.
27:45Everybody loves Project Runway.
27:47I love it.
27:48I think it's really good.
27:49The design's really innovative.
27:51I just think the show is terrific.
27:53I like to watch the frustration of the artist.
27:55I like to see them go from nothing, get stressed out, you know, cry, fight,
28:00and then come up with something that they're proud of at the end.
28:03I always love the squabbles they have about themselves.
28:06I like seeing what they start with, all the scraps, and seeing what they come up with.
28:11I do like the dramas of those designers, and I also like their creativity as well.
28:16Who's your favorite designer from this season?
28:18Anya.
28:19Totally Anya.
28:20Anya.
28:21Anya.
28:22Anya.
28:23Why?
28:24Because I like her.
28:25She's pretty.
28:26Well, I like Bert.
28:27I like Becky.
28:28Anya.
28:29Yes.
28:30Anya's my favorite girl.
28:31Why?
28:32Because of her hair, of course.
28:33Oliver Green.
28:34Oliver Green.
28:35Why?
28:36I don't know.
28:37I just like his weird accent, and his looking, and also his design as well.
28:41He's a good designer, right?
28:42Anya.
28:43I thought she was great.
28:44I loved the fact that she didn't really know how to sew very much to begin with.
28:49What do you think about the fact that she only learned to sew four months ago?
28:52I think that is awesome.
28:53I think that it gives, it gives a fresh, it has the potential to give a really fresh perspective
28:59to design, because she's not weeding through, like, years of the way that she was taught,
29:04or what she learned in school.
29:05What do you think about Oliver, who obviously had an issue with girls with figures?
29:11Remember the whole thing, and he didn't like boobs?
29:13I just think that's ridiculous.
29:15Now, I'm not even a busty girl.
29:17I'm actually what he was like.
29:19I'm like an A nun.
29:20Most girls have boob envy.
29:22Right.
29:23We're either getting breast implants, wearing boobs.
29:27What's that new thing?
29:28Little chicken cutlets are in there.
29:30Like, we need boobs.
29:32We need boobs.
29:33So, hot message to Oliver, we need boobs.
29:36We need boobs.
29:37If you were getting married, which designer would make your wedding dress?
29:41Um, I'd like to see what Anya has.
29:44Yeah, I would literally associate.
29:45Anya first commissioned for the wedding dress, right here.
29:48Anyone else you like in the show?
29:50No.
29:51Tim Gunn, you know who Tim Gunn is?
29:53Yes.
29:54Do you love Tim?
29:55Yes.
29:56Tim Gunn, I love Tim Gunn.
29:57He definitely has a compassion to be like a good educator, to connect with a student,
30:01to offer them advice.
30:02I love him.
30:03He's just funny.
30:04He's so good with the designers.
30:05I love you, Tim Gunn.
30:07Mwah!
30:08I'm gonna start selling I Love Tim Gunn t-shirts out here.
30:11I would make a fortune.
30:12You would, indeed.
30:13So, if you have one question for Mr. Tim Gunn, what would it be?
30:18What does the inside of your closet look like?
30:19What does the inside of your closet look like?
30:21Oh!
30:22Such a good question.
30:23Tim, I wanna know that one too.
30:24The inside of my closet is just like I am.
30:27It's anal retentive.
30:28And do you have any shorts in there?
30:30Yes, I do own a pair of Bermuda shorts in mattress.
30:33And if you have a question for Tim Gunn, what would it be?
30:37I would ask him about my outfit.
30:40What do I look like?
30:41Yeah?
30:42Yeah.
30:43What do you think?
30:44I don't know.
30:45I don't know.
30:46I don't know.
30:47Look.
30:48He's just something with his earrings.
30:49How do you look so good?
30:50With all, with all the going-ons in the background.
30:52How do you look so good?
30:53I envy you.
30:54There's a picture of calm, isn't he, Tim?
30:55I know.
30:56I mean, the words he uses.
30:57I have to open a dictionary to practically understand what he says sometimes.
31:01And I speak okay, okay English for an Asian.
31:04Which was your favorite challenge so far?
31:06The 70s challenge.
31:07Oh.
31:08I liked when they had to dress the people in the stilts.
31:11Oh, the stilts challenge was ridiculous.
31:16If you could do anyone else's hair on the show, whose would it be?
31:20It'd be my grandfather, the gray hair.
31:22What's that?
31:23Bert.
31:24Hey.
31:25He's younger than I am.
31:26I would love to do your hair, Bert.
31:28You can edit that one out.
31:30Generally, the designers, any one question you would ask them.
31:34In the, like, minuscule hours that there are left in the day when they're not designing,
31:40what do you do in the apartment?
31:41Sleep.
31:42Sleep.
31:43Sleep and eat.
31:44Crazinesses.
31:45Booze.
31:46Yeah, right?
31:47I wish.
31:48There's no booze at all.
31:49Sleep, eat.
31:50We wish we could have had a drink.
31:53I'm like, what free time?
31:54Where?
31:55Can you do an impression of any of the designers?
31:57Cut a bitch.
31:59Well, I have to say, I love what the viewers have to say.
32:03I always do.
32:04And I get a lot of comments on the street, as I'm sure all of you do, too.
32:08And it's fun to hear their perception and to hear how they spin things and to hear how wrong they can be about things, too.
32:15I'm always correcting mythologies.
32:18Yep.
32:19Do you believe that the viewers at home have a full enough understanding of how hard you work and how difficult and demanding this whole process is?
32:29Not at all.
32:30Not at all.
32:31As the one who's with you day in and day out, I mean, I marvel at you and what you're able to achieve.
32:37Because on the one hand, as you move forward in the process, yes, it's thrilling, it's wonderful.
32:42I'm still here.
32:43On the other hand, you're physically spent, emotionally spent, creatively spent.
32:48It's harder the longer you're on.
32:51It's really difficult and demanding.
32:53I don't think people realize what goes into making a garment.
32:56No.
32:57The time that goes into making a garment.
32:59And I don't think they realize that what they see in terms of the time that you give us for the day is what we actually have.
33:04It's real.
33:05People really think, like, we have, like, the week it takes between them watching us.
33:08Yeah.
33:09That's what we get.
33:10And I'm like, no.
33:11What you see is what you get.
33:12And we have, like, 20-hour days that we're doing it.
33:15You just see an hour of, you know, put on TV.
33:18Back to back.
33:19Yeah.
33:20It's, no, they have no clue.
33:22I think also the creativity part of it, after being on the show for such a long period of time,
33:28you sort of become, not stale, but just, like, dead almost.
33:31No, exactly.
33:32And, like, a walk in the park, Central Park, or, you know, going out to dinner with friends would totally re-regorate that.
33:39Yeah.
33:40But that's what, you know, the show's about.
33:41They don't realize there's no break from it.
33:43And I guess it's easy just to sit there and, like, you know, in your comfort and watching TV and just sort of, like, judge and say things that you don't really know what's happening behind all of this being put together.
33:56Well, I always want to say to people who are critical and judgmental in that capacity, you try it.
34:01Yeah.
34:02You try it.
34:03Step into the designer's shoes for just two days.
34:05Yeah.
34:06And see if you're not ready for a mental hospital.
34:08Yeah.
34:09We're going to take a little break and we'll be right back.
34:12Well, actually, Tim, when we get back, the designers and I have decided to turn the tables and we've cooked up a little something for you.
34:19You have?
34:20Yes, yes, yes.
34:21Shall I be afraid?
34:22Yeah.
34:23Really?
34:24Put the scissors down.
34:25Put the scissors down?
34:26All right.
34:27So make sure y'all tune in.
34:32I'm intrigued.
34:34We'll be back in a second.
34:36Coming up on Project Runway Behind the Seams.
34:39So, Tim, the designers and I thought we would take this moment to let you know how we really feel.
34:46Oh, my God.
34:48Welcome back, everyone.
34:57So, Tim, the designers and I thought we would take this moment to let you know how we really feel.
35:05Uh-oh.
35:06Is this retribution?
35:07I think I say this on behalf of all the designers.
35:12We're very honored and grateful for everything that you've done with us, you know, throughout the whole season.
35:18And with the help of the producers, we've made something in your honor.
35:23I'm very touched.
35:24I think.
35:25Hi, Tim.
35:26Hi, Tim.
35:27Hi, Tim.
35:28Hi, Tim.
35:29When I first saw you on TV, I was very intrigued and mesmerized.
35:38I thought, I don't think I'll ever get to meet a person like you.
35:42You are definitely one of the most inspiring men I've ever met in my entire life.
35:47You are one of the very rare, genuine, pure, and loyal people in the world, and I am so honored to have had the chance to know you.
35:56I can only, you know, aspire to be half of the man that you are and uphold myself with so much grace and only so many people, you know, can touch lives like you do.
36:09You have so much compassion towards other people.
36:12You have so much love for what you do.
36:14You have continually been a wonderful mentor and helped me become the designer I am.
36:23You are the grounded professor that is honest and faithful and truthful to all your students.
36:29I couldn't have possibly had the experience that I had without you and all of the inside that you shared with me.
36:37And you were there for me at points when I didn't know what the hell I was going to do.
36:42But you really, you always were able to get through to me and I always knew that I could trust you.
36:49I just want to take this opportunity, Tim, to say thank you for all of your help, advice, and love this season.
37:00I truly believe that it's going to make me a great designer in the future.
37:05I really love you and I really am grateful to have met you.
37:10You'll always hold a very special place with me and you'll definitely always be my favorite.
37:16So, but just don't tell Heidi.
37:20It's been wonderful meeting you and knowing you personally and thank you.
37:27So, I thank you for trusting me to be myself and that means a lot to me, so thank you.
37:35You've helped so many and I am really touched by everything that you've done for myself and all the rest of the students and Project Runway contestants that you've touched.
37:45Thank you so much, Tim. I really, really love you with everything that is in me.
37:50I mean that so sincerely and thank you. Bye.
37:56But you know what you all don't know? Or maybe you do know. Sorry.
38:09Sorry. I don't, I'm sorry Kimberly. I just want you all to know how much you give to me and that's why I love you so much.
38:21It's all that you give to me. So, if I can give anything back to you, I'm deeply honored and grateful.
38:27But really for me, I feel selfish in a way. It's really what you give me and that's a tremendous amount.
38:34And it's inspiration, it's hope and unbridled enthusiasm for the future of this industry because of you and your talents and your tenacity and determination.
38:47It's, it's, um, it's overwhelming. So I'm grateful. I'm grateful to all of you.
38:55Sorry. I wasn't expecting this to happen to me.
38:58And Tim.
39:00What?
39:01The most deserving award of this evening is to you.
39:05Because you're always going to have something in our heart. And we have something for you.
39:10Oh my God.
39:16Thank you guys.
39:18Have a group hug.
39:19Thank you. Really.
39:20This is so touching.
39:23Laura.
39:25Bert.
39:26Thank you all so much.
39:28We love you.
39:29I love you back.
39:30We love you back.
39:32Oh, this is lovely.
39:33It says Project Runway 9.
39:36Designer award, best mentor, Tim Gunn.
39:39I'm going to fall apart again.
39:40Really, I'm deeply touched.
39:43I'm deeply touched.
39:44Well, I'm your mentor for life.
39:46I mean it.
39:47I mean as long as my life lasts, which we hope is a long time.
39:50Yes.
39:51Oh.
39:52This is lovely.
39:53Thank you so much.
39:55All right.
39:56I guess the show must go on.
39:58Well, that was a test of my emotional dexterity, I have to say.
40:02This has been a wonderful, wonderful season and it's thanks to all of you.
40:06You're the reason.
40:08It's been a wonderful season and I'm sad to say that it's officially behind us now.
40:12I'm going to thank all of you for watching.
40:14We wouldn't be here without you, our extremely loyal fans.
40:18And we will see you next year for season 10.
40:22Bye everybody.
40:24What is this?
40:25What's a guest cafe?
40:26What is it?
40:27I think it's looking like a gimmick.
40:28It's looking pretty costuming.
40:29I don't see high fashion on this.
40:30It makes me want to weep.
40:31And what I was thinking with the feathers, cluster them here.
40:47There's a way of using the feathers that wouldn't be this pubic patch.
40:51Got it.
40:52What is this logo?
40:53It's a clown puking rainbows.
40:54Is that a toilet?
40:55Carry on.
40:56Carry on.
40:57Carry on.
40:58Carry on.
40:59Carry on.
41:00Carry on.
