00:01Previously on Project Runway
00:03I want you guys to create a look to go with my sneakers.
00:07I am not happy being here.
00:09I'd rather go.
00:10Then you should go.
00:12You will be working in four teams of three.
00:15Victor and Oliver.
00:16You can choose anyone that has been eliminated.
00:19Welcome Josh back to the competition.
00:22No more playing it safe.
00:23Becky, if you're tired, take a nap.
00:25Excuse me?
00:26Becky is a very emotional person which I don't relate to.
00:29Oh, God.
00:34The blouse is like a souffle that flopped.
00:37She has camel toe and big shorts.
00:39Oh.
00:40There is no confronting you and there's no budging with you.
00:42You're just lying right now.
00:43No, I'm not.
00:44Yes, you are.
00:45I haven't probably gotten this pissed since I had cancer.
00:47Victor, you are the winner of this challenge.
00:51Josh, you're also the winner.
00:53Oh.
00:54Awesome.
00:55Anthony, Ryan, you completely fell apart.
00:58But you're in.
00:59Danielle, that means you're out.
01:01This.
01:02This.
01:03This.
01:04This.
01:05This is the search for the next big fashion designer.
01:07It's about style.
01:08Fashion.
01:09Attitude.
01:10Three finalists.
01:11And one winner.
01:12This is for real.
01:13Be good.
01:14Be great.
01:15This is Project Runway.
01:17The winner of Project Runway will receive $100,000 from Laurel Paris to start their own line.
01:22The fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine.
01:24A $50,000 technology suite from HP and Intel to enable their creativity and run their business.
01:30And the opportunity to design and sell an exclusive collection on PiperLime.com.
01:34The model paired with the winner of Project Runway will receive a fashion spread in Marie Claire magazine and $25,000 from Laurel Paris Studio Secrets Professional.
01:43Thanks for making me feel welcome.
01:44Of course.
01:45You're very welcome.
01:46And you're back.
01:47Let's make it a good day.
01:48You got to make it work this time.
01:49Back to Parsons.
01:50Well, girls, we have to make it count.
01:51Okay, so a guy needs to go home.
02:04Hi.
02:05Hi.
02:06Are you ready for your next challenge?
02:07Yes.
02:08Victor and Joshua, you are the winner of the last challenge, so you have immunity and you cannot be eliminated.
02:17I'm going to send you back to school to further your education.
02:21I'm thinking we're either dressing students or we're dressing teachers.
02:26Tim and some special guests will meet you at the school and they will fill you in on all of the details.
02:31Good luck and I'll see you on the runway.
02:33Bye, everybody.
02:34Bye.
02:35Good morning, designers.
02:46Good morning, Sam.
02:47Welcome to the Harlem School of the Arts.
02:50I am delighted to introduce you to Yvette Campbell, President and CEO, and Byron McCray, Director of Visual Arts,
02:57and to these incredibly talented students who have created these fabulous works of art.
03:02Designers, for this challenge, you will be collaborating on a work of art with one of these students.
03:09That work of art will serve as the inspiration for an avant-garde look that will walk the runway.
03:15Yes.
03:16You will have two days for this challenge, so that's an indication of how ambitious we want you to be, all right?
03:23Let's head off to the art studio.
03:25Come on in, everybody.
03:27Grab materials, establish a workspace, and start creating your work of art.
03:32How old are you?
03:33I'm 16.
03:34So what inspires you?
03:35Like, emotional connection.
03:36Mm-hmm.
03:37So that's why I, like, tend to paint, like, relates recently.
03:39I love kids.
03:41This is gonna be a fun challenge for me, but I'm sure some of the designers have their hesitations.
03:46Um, I think we should put a boostier-ish.
03:49Okay.
03:50I'm not 100% sure what a boostier exactly looks like, but, um...
03:53The student artist I'm working with is Skye.
03:56The dress also should have, like, a nice silhouette.
03:58It should be, like, fitting.
03:59It'd be really pretty.
04:00Do you live around?
04:01Yeah.
04:02What's your favorite activity?
04:03What was art like for you as a kid?
04:05I probably would have dealt better with her if I had a cocktail with me.
04:09I'm a New Yorker.
04:10Yeah.
04:11But I love her swirls.
04:13It's really beautiful.
04:14She did a good job.
04:15Cool.
04:16I've got a great artist.
04:18His name is Antonio.
04:19He's a very quiet young man, so we're getting along great, actually.
04:23If you feel like I'm messing this up, just say stop.
04:25All right.
04:26Please stop.
04:27Now that I'm back, this is my first chance to sort of do my own thing again and really
04:35prove myself.
04:36It has, like, some, like, galaxy.
04:38It does!
04:39Okay, but we're in outer space.
04:42Can I put in something?
04:43Sure.
04:44Do you usually listen to music when you work?
04:47Yeah.
04:48I was listening so far.
04:50Oh, it's fantastic.
04:51In some ways, it looks like the Earth is crying into itself.
04:54I think I'm going to be using that.
04:56But why don't we bring some maybe more, like, blues and purples and...
04:59They're more, like, trees on fire to, like...
05:01So you're...
05:02This is where your face is going, right?
05:03Yeah.
05:04But I'll just start with, like, very basic.
05:05Okay.
05:06That's okay.
05:07Yeah.
05:08No, totally.
05:09Last one was a pretty tough one.
05:10We had a group challenge, and my group didn't get along very well.
05:13And it was the first time I got any negative feedback.
05:16Failure is opportunity in disguise.
05:18Failure is opportunity in disguise.
05:20Failure is opportunity in disguise.
05:21You're so right.
05:22Kai is like a little Dalai Lama or something.
05:24Maybe that failure, it was just showing you that you need to...
05:27This is what you need to do.
05:28Can I get your phone number and call you when I get upset?
05:31I love the movement, though.
05:33Yeah.
05:34Our painting is essentially self-portraits.
05:36You almost get this sense of vulnerability.
05:39Our skin fades into the painting like we have no clothes, in a way.
05:42Designers and art students, your time is up.
05:46I think it's very colorful.
05:47And I love drawing shoulders, and then the red is coming out.
05:50This is gonna be a really tough challenge.
05:53Yeah, it is for all of us.
05:55Students, thank you so much.
06:02All right, everyone.
06:03You have 30 minutes to sketch a design for your avant-garde look.
06:07Then we're going shopping at Mood.
06:09Okay?
06:10Good.
06:16I kind of want to do something very organic, airy, almost goddess-like.
06:21Recently I found I'm sort of confused more than ever.
06:29This is like the challenge where you could do anything.
06:31And I'm like working with a tree.
06:32I am not organic.
06:33I like things that are fake.
06:37I'm sweating this.
06:38I'm gonna work with it, but what are you doing with yours?
06:42It's just gonna be a nude dress that I am taking colors from the painting and actually physically making them look like brush strokes.
06:50I think the most important part of the inspiration is taking more of the emotions and the feelings from the work and not doing something too literal.
06:59Designers, let's head off to Mood.
07:02Thank you, Harlem School of the Arts.
07:05All right, designers.
07:06Your 30 minutes starts now.
07:08You're not getting fur, are you?
07:09Um.
07:10Because we're fur free.
07:11I can get faux fur?
07:12Yeah.
07:13Okay.
07:14Time is up.
07:15You need to be at the register.
07:30Thank you, guys.
07:31Hi, everyone.
07:32Hi, Tim.
07:33Hi, Tim.
07:34Hi, Tim.
07:35Hi, Tim.
07:36Hi, Tim.
07:37Designers, you have until 10 o'clock tonight and all day tomorrow.
07:55And I will be checking in with you tomorrow.
07:58All right, everybody.
07:59Make it work.
08:01All right.
08:02I'll see you tomorrow.
08:04This is avant-garde.
08:05Yeah.
08:06Go weird or go home.
08:07To me, avant-garde really can't be worn in real life.
08:10I don't know about weird, but go out there.
08:13To me, avant-garde is a little edgy.
08:14Like, you have to really do something that turns your head and makes you think, how is that done?
08:18I'm seeing a lot of bright colors, feathers, fur.
08:24Compared to others, my look is definitely more quiet.
08:28I have this circle skirt that I had painted to look like the effect of wood.
08:32So my idea is like, you know forest fires?
08:34Mm-hmm.
08:35So it's gonna be like the fire traveled across this part of the forest.
08:38What do you think?
08:39Mm-hmm.
08:40I like this sketch.
08:41Then we have a really long glove.
08:43I have a semi-long.
08:46I'm being serious.
08:48Get your mind out of the gutter, boys.
08:51My biggest concern is really creating that silhouette.
08:54And the pant balloons out over the hips.
08:57And that's the big thing is not making her look silly.
09:00When you cut raw silk organza, the edges are gonna fray.
09:03So to keep from fraying, I am burning the edges.
09:07It kind of smells like when I used to burn my Barbies.
09:10It makes it turn this cool brown color, kind of like wilted petals.
09:13So just to let you know I'm burning down the workroom.
09:15Fortunately, I'm a needle scout, so I'll put out the fire.
09:18You're a needle scout?
09:19A needle scout.
09:20I am now.
09:24Bird, are you gay or straight?
09:25I'm gay.
09:26You could play the straight card.
09:27Yeah, well.
09:28Are you married?
09:29I'm widowed.
09:31Oh.
09:32Oh, wow.
09:33Was it sudden?
09:34No.
09:35It is.
09:36How long were you together?
09:3818 years.
09:39It was love at first sight.
09:40Aw.
09:41I was very fortunate.
09:43Yeah.
09:46It's the end of the work day, and I did plan to be further along than I am.
09:50I have my work cut out for me tomorrow.
09:53So by the end of the day, I've been able to go through the design.
09:57I'm feeling just pretty good about it.
10:00Okay, that's enough for tonight.
10:02All right, it's 10 o'clock.
10:04Let's get your stuff and go.
10:25Good morning, everyone.
10:27Good morning.
10:28I have good news.
10:29Uh-oh.
10:30Your artwork has arrived.
10:31Yeah.
10:32Yeah.
10:33And it has arrived via special delivery.
10:37Come on in, everyone.
10:38Hi.
10:39Here we go.
10:40Hi.
10:41Hey there.
10:42So what I'm doing right now is just making sure that all these green strips line up with
10:48yellow.
10:49Mm-hmm.
10:50It seems like you're doing a good job so far.
10:51Somewhat.
10:52You really think it's good with our painting, right?
10:54Yep.
10:55Yep.
10:56Okay, good.
10:57Drawing it was meant to be feathers going up, but I think this is nice though.
11:00I love these feathers.
11:01What if I mixed the blue and green?
11:03Oh, that'd be actually really awesome.
11:05Do you want to maybe texture it so that the rib cage actually looks like it's popping out
11:10a little?
11:11Okay, I could totally do that.
11:12It's really gorgeous.
11:13I love it.
11:15Anthony Ryan.
11:16Hey.
11:17Wu-Ching.
11:18Hello.
11:19So how has this inspired your avant-garde look?
11:21I really want it to look like it was just paint in a way and just really take from her impressionistic
11:26brushstrokes in the painting.
11:28I'm really trying to not go that one little step away from avant-garde into costume.
11:35Right.
11:36You want something that does walk that very fine line.
11:38I just made her keep talking to me so that I could take what she does as an artist and
11:42put it into fashion.
11:43That'd still be you.
11:44Yeah, it'd still be, and this is-
11:45Well, actually, you're tapping into part of you that maybe even you haven't explored.
11:48No.
11:49I definitely have not explored orange.
11:51This is going to be one of the wings.
11:54So basically this is just going to be a sleeve that's going to be fully feathered.
11:58You want to avoid giving Michael Kors the opportunity to talk about a Hiawatha moment.
12:03Flowers is inspiration, so, you know, I knew it was going to be something that was pretty.
12:08Also provocative.
12:09Right.
12:10It's avant-garde.
12:11First thing I actually did was make cubes, and I wasn't sure it was too much like kindergarten
12:17blocks, but after I had the dress together, I put them on and I just started making more
12:22and more, and then they grew and grew.
12:23You want to keep it sophisticated to a degree.
12:26Exactly.
12:27And sharp.
12:28Yes.
12:29Coming up on Project One Way.
12:30It's more about being safe than actually showing us what he's made of.
12:33You've actually glued the top to your model.
12:36It's against the rules.
12:42Hi, birds.
12:43I'm all yours.
12:44It was great meeting Antonio, and I love his color sense.
12:46It's upbeat, it's happy, it's young.
12:48The proportion of these pieces, like his painting, will probably change a little bit.
12:53Hi, Tanya Lee.
12:54Hello.
12:55Hi, Oliver.
12:56Hi, Tim.
12:57Talk to us about your design.
12:58Because generally, I don't think a lot of colors when I design.
13:02I know.
13:03And I thought...
13:04I was happy to see this painting for just that reason.
13:06I was going to use blue as this part, that sort of tuck into this piece, and then I just
13:12float down.
13:14Avant-garde.
13:16Are you taking this far enough?
13:19Joshua and Patrice, talk to me.
13:21Well, we had worked on this idea of, you know, a horizon line with the life which is the roots,
13:27and death on the surface.
13:29This needs to be able to stand on its own, independent of the narrative.
13:33Right.
13:34Sasha?
13:35Hi, Josh.
13:36Hey, Tim.
13:37How's it going?
13:38Hi.
13:39How are you both?
13:40So good.
13:41Pretty great.
13:42Is it too literal an interpretation of the painting?
13:47I don't want to interfere with your vision as much as pose some questions to you.
13:52Sure, of course.
13:53Because I don't want you to go home again.
13:55Agreed.
13:56Victor and Skye.
13:57Hi, Tim.
13:58Talk to me.
13:59Skye mentioned that she likes swirls, like movement.
14:02Like it's going to move, and I like the movement of water.
14:05She sold it.
14:06It's not a forced look.
14:07It's more of a natural flowing.
14:09So you stand in support of this?
14:11Yes.
14:12Excellent.
14:13So designers, say goodbye to your art students, but not forever, because they're joining us
14:20for the runway show.
14:21Yay!
14:22Art students, come with me.
14:24Hi!
14:26Thank you, Skye.
14:27She's so funny.
14:29The overall concept's coming through.
14:34You can clearly see that I'm really trying to use a technique to make it avant-garde.
14:38You know, it's kind of risky, but I'm going to have fun with it.
14:43I'm losing my mind.
14:45I want to take that creepy kind of dark factor from the actual painting.
14:50I want to take it as far as, you know, the straight jacket look.
14:53Hi.
14:54Hey.
14:55Laura.
14:56How are you?
14:57Oh, wow.
14:58Yeah, it's really beautiful.
14:59Okay.
15:00I love it.
15:01I love it.
15:02I love it.
15:03Bye.
15:04Bye.
15:05Bye.
15:06What are you doing, Josh?
15:19I'm thinking.
15:20Okay.
15:21No, I really am a little bit stuck for a second.
15:23Maybe I should just start drawing.
15:40Good morning, designers.
15:41Morning.
15:42You have two hours to send your models to the L'Oreal Paris makeup room and the Garnier
15:48hair studio.
15:49And think very thoughtfully about how you're going to style your avant-garde look with the
15:54Piper Lime wall.
15:55Work hard.
15:56I'll be back.
15:57All right.
15:58Thank you, everyone.
15:59Make it work.
16:00I have to sew this together.
16:01I think I made a mistake of spending too much time on the top garment.
16:14I really want to make a really big red lip.
16:18Mm-hmm.
16:19And I love how you can see her cheekbones more.
16:21I wish I had that instead of having them here.
16:24How about a highlight and a beautiful blue right around with a lot of mascara?
16:30Cool, yeah.
16:31I think it's beautiful.
16:32That sounds perfect.
16:33So we're just doing a tight back on the front here.
16:36And then in the back, just a massive explosion.
16:39So I want her hair totally blown out huge.
16:42Do you know what I mean?
16:43So you want big.
16:44Big, big hair.
16:45Yeah.
16:46So I'd like to do an afro.
16:47So big, tease as big as possible.
16:49I've never had an afro in my life.
16:50I just read the shit out of it.
16:52I'd love to get this somehow to look as though it's the smoke from what's happening.
16:57Awesome.
16:58That's what I need.
16:59Thank you so much, Kanye.
17:01I'm going to try gluing that on your boobs.
17:04What?
17:05The glue.
17:06Yeah.
17:07You think it's okay?
17:08My god.
17:09I hope it's okay.
17:10At this moment, I'm worried about Oliver maybe not finishing the garment because he's a
17:15little slow.
17:16Hold it like this.
17:22Oliver.
17:23Yes.
17:24You've actually glued the top to your model.
17:29Why are you gluing?
17:31Because I was just afraid like when she walks, it's going to fall like flat.
17:34But that is a construction issue.
17:37It can't be mitigated by gluing the top to your model.
17:41It's against the rules.
17:42Gluing to me is like cheating.
17:45It's not sewing.
17:46Like if you go to a store and you buy a dress that's glued, would you buy it?
17:50No.
17:51This is the only part that I put glue.
17:53But it's not sticking now.
17:54No.
17:55Okay.
17:56All right.
18:03I'm happy with it.
18:04It's weird.
18:05Just weird enough.
18:06I think it's time for Bryce to pack his bags.
18:10He's worried more about being safe than actually showing us what he's made of.
18:14All right, everyone.
18:16Let's go down to the runway.
18:17Let's go.
18:18I'm excited, actually.
18:19I think mine's definitely one of the stronger ones, you know.
18:22But we're not going to count them chickens yet.
18:26Coming up on Project Runway, it's trashy.
18:29Don't get it.
18:30They're like Valium clubs.
18:41Hello.
18:42Hi.
18:43Welcome to the runway.
18:44As you know, in fashion, one day you're in, and the next day you're out.
18:48There are 11 of you here, and after tonight, there will be 10.
18:51For this challenge, we paired you with an art student from the Harlem School of the Arts.
18:56Welcome to the runway, students.
18:59Together, you created a piece of art that served as your inspiration for an avant-garde look.
19:04All right, let's meet the judges.
19:06First, we have CFDA Lifetime Achievement Award winner, Michael Kors.
19:10Hey, guys.
19:11Hey, Michael.
19:12Filling in for Nina Garcia, we have Senior Fashion Editor for Mericlera Magazine, Zana Roberts-Rossi.
19:17Hi.
19:18Hi.
19:19Hi.
19:20And our special guest judge, designer, philanthropist, and chairman of Amphar, Kenneth Cole.
19:24Hi.
19:25Hi.
19:26We will score your designs as they come down the runway.
19:29One of you will be named the winner, and one of you will be out.
19:34All right, let's start the show.
19:37I am over the moon.
19:49I kind of did an asymmetrical hem that mimicked the profile of the bird, and I made her really
19:55strong as the eagle with the leather and the high collar.
20:00My artist loves it, so I believe I did a great job.
20:07I really like the dress that I made, it looks amazing.
20:18The only thing I'm wishing is I had more volume on the bottom, but the dress fits her perfectly,
20:23it's nice and tight.
20:24I did the fitting beautifully, and she looks great in it, her walk's amazing.
20:29I can't complain.
20:37It's definitely more quiet and more subtle, but I think silence is the most powerful voice,
20:47and I hope that translates into the design, but I'm nervous that I'm not pushing myself
20:53hard enough.
20:54I just think I could have done better.
20:56I am thoroughly pleased.
21:09I definitely love this idea of monogramming the skirt with some initials that definitely
21:16mean a lot to me.
21:17I'm just hoping that the judges are able to hone in that it's avant-garde.
21:22Watching my look come down the runway, I think it looks great.
21:37It's attractive.
21:38The shapes my artist had on his painting, I've interpreted it in an avant-garde way.
21:43Just the proportion of this large pant, being very high-waisted is somewhat forward.
22:03It looks really, really good.
22:05So good.
22:06I love the drama, I love how it moves.
22:08There was definitely elements that I would do in my own garments, and there's elements
22:12of Skye.
22:13So I'm pretty happy.
22:14That's fine.
22:15I'm so vibrant.
22:16You love it?
22:17I'm excited.
22:18It's what I envisioned.
22:19The movement's beautiful.
22:20I took the painting techniques that Kai likes to use and put them into the garment.
22:37I really wanted her to look like a dusted fairy.
22:39Oh, she looks like a fairy.
22:41I think my design is great.
22:42I like the straight jacket.
22:43But I just am concerned about using orange and blue, even though that was my artist's
23:02aesthetic.
23:03It's just not normally what I do.
23:04But all in all, I really like how my look turned out.
23:10I am honestly relieved.
23:11I'm pleased.
23:12I feel like it's visually stimulating.
23:28For me, this is avant-garde.
23:29I definitely feel like I've created something that is beyond my everyday design.
23:37I really like it.
23:38I'm loving how it's moving down the runway.
23:52It was very true to the painting.
23:53It was very simplistic.
23:54But I kind of amped it up with the technique and the color to make it my own in a way.
24:00And I love how the little train's working in the back.
24:03I like it.
24:04I'm all smiles at this point.
24:06I am really happy with the overall look.
24:22It's attractive.
24:23I think it has impact.
24:24I think it says something about me and my love for this very African aesthetic.
24:30But I don't know if it was particularly avant-garde.
24:33But AJ is absolutely thrilled and that felt amazing.
24:36If I call your name, please step forward.
24:43Kimberly.
24:44Victor.
24:45Becky.
24:46Please step forward.
24:47Bryce.
24:48Anya.
24:49If I've called your name, congratulations.
24:54Your scores have qualified you to move on to the next challenge.
24:57You can leave the runway.
25:00Congratulations.
25:01Good luck, guys.
25:06The remaining designers have the highest and the lowest scores.
25:17One of you will be named the winner and one of you will be out.
25:27All right, Joshua.
25:28Me and my artist Patrice, we kind of started talking about a toxic tree and the roots were alive,
25:33but everything above the surface was dead.
25:35So, basically, little memoirs of people that carved things into the tree being left.
25:39It was kind of the idea of things may burn and people may pass and go away, but the memories are still left.
25:44I like this look.
25:46I liked especially what you've done to the fabric.
25:49You painted this fabric, right?
25:50Yes.
25:51Actually, it's a double-sided neoprene with, it's actually a light tan and then it was a darker tan.
25:55And I did two coats on it.
25:56I just love the way you painted that.
25:59I think that looks great.
26:01I think this is great, Joshua.
26:02I also love the skirt.
26:05It just seems to drape very naturally.
26:07And I also love the contrast of the top and the bottom and the foundation.
26:12I think it's very well done.
26:15The texture on the skirt is spectacular.
26:18I like the texture of the flame on top.
26:21If her hair was in a ponytail and her makeup was just clean, someone would actually wear it.
26:29Yeah.
26:30But with the sleeve and the makeup and, you know, it's a little Tim Burton-y.
26:35Sometimes we don't need the crutch of styling.
26:37Let the garment shine.
26:39I love the skirt.
26:40The fact you painted that is great.
26:42What do the actual little symbols say on it?
26:44There's something on the back.
26:45Well, this is just my initials and then my mom's initials.
26:48Nice.
26:49That's really sweet.
26:50And how, like, graffiti within that makes it even cooler.
26:54Thank you so much.
26:56Josh.
26:57I worked with my artist.
26:59Her name is Sasha.
27:00And she said she really liked wolves.
27:02And I said, let's just go for it.
27:04My favorite part was she kind of exposed the rib cage and put a heart in the middle of it.
27:08I tried to interpret that for me as, you know, these layers, the protective, and then eventually you get a heart.
27:14I just really wanted to express the two sides.
27:17I don't think it's avant-garde.
27:19She looks like a Victorian cocktail waitress in Las Vegas.
27:22She's got the Faster Pussycat Kill boots on, the miniskirt, the harness, the puff sleeves, the crazy hair.
27:29I don't think it's fashion.
27:31I'm struggling.
27:32My first thought was trashy.
27:35You look at someone like McQueen who'd take references from all sorts of dark places, but make them look beautiful.
27:42This, you didn't make them look beautiful.
27:44It's not there.
27:45Sorry.
27:46First thing I was thinking, I'm gonna be your hooker for Halloween.
27:50I totally disagree.
27:52I mean, I know it's subjective and I know it's an opinion, but when I saw her come out, it was a totally different feeling than what you're feeling.
27:58Yes, slight beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but there's a definite consensus here that says it's not beautiful.
28:04You know, I'm struggling with the proportions as much as anything.
28:08It just feels kind of awkward and a little dominatrix-y, but I think the elements are not bad.
28:16It just doesn't come together.
28:19All right, Bert.
28:21My artist, Antonio, his painting that we did together was mostly geometric shapes.
28:26So that was my cue to work with the colors that he used and also the shapes.
28:32I feel that the art and the fashion are not in harmony.
28:37I don't feel like it's a garment that anyone would want to wear.
28:40I've been sort of trying to bump it up a bit.
28:43It's been suggested I'm too simple.
28:45Well, this is not simple.
28:46Yeah.
28:47You succeeded there.
28:48Avant-garde doesn't have to be beautiful in the traditional sense of the word.
28:53You know, sometimes it can be oddly beautiful.
28:56It makes you think.
28:57Unfortunately, she just looks like a girl with a misshapen body with some stuff glued on her.
29:03It doesn't feel modern.
29:05Too perfect.
29:06Okay.
29:07Your hand is all about perfect, perfect, perfect.
29:09Mm-hmm.
29:10So then something's got to F it up.
29:12Right.
29:13That's what keeps it modern.
29:14I actually liked it and I liked it that it was very literal.
29:17There were some things there today that bored me that were sad and drab.
29:21This is not sad.
29:22This has a point of view.
29:23It's loud.
29:24It's cuckoo.
29:25I don't think we're going to be seeing ladies at cocktail parties wearing this.
29:29Really?
29:30No.
29:31I think this is just too outside the box.
29:34There's just these forms that just seem to be applied, but I don't get it.
29:39Laura?
29:40I had the pleasure of working with Kai, an adorable 11-year-old, and she painted her rose.
29:46She painted little green thorns on it.
29:48She said, thorns make roses original.
29:50So I did this boning that kind of represented the thorns, and when we were done with the painting, Kai doused the entire painting with water.
29:57So I wanted to take this ivory and douse it down like it became this light, airy thing.
30:03When it walked out, I was looking at the painting that you were referencing in your inspiration, and I had a hard time seeing how that linked to the dress.
30:10Now, on your explanation, I can see it. I can see the stems of the roses. You know, I can see the hard and the soft.
30:16I love the interplay of the corset with the beautiful sheer gown.
30:23I do like the way you handled the fabric, and I do like the boning underneath.
30:27I like your inspiration. I can see where it's coming from. I love the mixture of the soft with the hard.
30:33I love the hard black lines coming through from underneath. I think it's a beautiful color. I liked it a lot.
30:41Oliver?
30:43My artist, Tanya, she likes to draw dreams, and she had lots of lines going on across the canvases.
30:50And she likes the color blue, and she likes bright colors.
30:53So I thought of this dreamy sort of soft, but has lots of structure and lines going across.
31:00Oliver, do you think I love it?
31:02I think you don't like it.
31:04I think you're right. The entire dress really looks sad. The colors are sad. Even your blue looks sad.
31:09And the painting doesn't look sad to me. It's much more vibrant.
31:14Top here is so well done. Extremely well constructed. And then you get below the waist, and you just see this really cheap fabric.
31:22Almost take the chiffon, the lemon or the blue chiffon, and make that into the skirt.
31:27That would be much more ethereal, a little bit more romantic. The interpretation is good, but it's boring.
31:33I think it's anything but boring. There's too many details. There's one layer too many, and then the asymmetry also makes it hard.
31:43The top is beautifully made. The bottom is less than that.
31:46I think that the bodice, the constructed side, is spectacular. But then the rest of the dress looks like mood exploded on her.
31:54You need to not be afraid of being powerful. You've got to, you know, push it. Push it.
32:03Anthony Ryan.
32:04My artist wanted to do a portrait of me, but I wanted her to be included, so she did one of herself next to me.
32:09And if you kind of look at the bottom of the painting, it almost looks like our skin fades into the painting.
32:13I love this dress. Thank you.
32:15I can see the inspiration. I still love that you're colorblind, and you do beautiful things with color.
32:20She looks sexy. She looks modern. It is a very simple look, but yet very powerful, and I like that.
32:27What I really appreciate about this, you've got the attitude of the painting without being literal.
32:34You also found a way to manipulate the fabric, which I think is interesting.
32:40There's dimension with the color, and you've got that undone hem, but quite honestly, I think it goes with the garment.
32:47Yeah.
32:48I, on the other hand, struggling with the execution a little bit. It feels almost a little homemade, as though the pieces were just applied without attention to some element of application that would make them feel more finished.
33:00And the bottom, again, it's sheer. It's sexy. It's pretty. But it just feels like there's another underlayer missing. But I really like it a lot. It just feels like it's not there.
33:12Right.
33:13When it first walked down the runway, I was kind of thinking, is that ticker tape? And then I realized it was the brush strokes, and I actually really like it.
33:21I like the way they're kind of trickling down the dress slightly, the combination of those, the kind of very opaque colors with the chiffon, and the two textures together work really well.
33:29It's a very cool dress.
33:32Okay, we've heard what you had to say. We're going to have a little chat, and I'll call you back out. You can leave the runway.
33:38Thanks.
33:39All right, let's talk about the designers that we like the most. Joshua McKinley.
33:49Joshua, how cool was that skirt and the painting on the neoprene?
33:52Very cool.
33:53It was cool.
33:54The texture.
33:55That was amazing.
33:56And I love the graffiti on the tree.
33:58That touch was very well thought out and looked extremely well done.
34:02Mm-hmm.
34:03I actually love that he didn't only sew his garment, but he also halfway painted it, and that's what we were all attracted to.
34:09Right.
34:10You know, so it's nice.
34:11He's the only one who did that, actually.
34:12I love the contrast of very bright and feminine, and then the very somber, but yet very organic looking and feeling from the waist down.
34:21Yeah.
34:22Artistically, this was very good.
34:25We liked Laura.
34:26I loved the mix of the soft and the hard.
34:29I liked the concept of the structure of the corset showing through the transparency.
34:34That kept it modern.
34:36Yes.
34:37The corset thing was a cool way to interpret the roses, don't you think?
34:41Right.
34:42Because at first, when I saw the picture, I couldn't see the correlation.
34:45Yeah.
34:46And then when she explained it, it was like, ah, yes, I can see what you're talking about now.
34:49I like the harder, more structured, the softer, more flowing garment.
34:54That's a great concept.
34:55It was really, really well made, too.
34:59Time management on this dress, I mean, that is a lot to do.
35:02Well made.
35:03Anthony Ryan.
35:04He really made a beautiful, interesting dress that was simple from the colors to the strong point of view.
35:12You could see what the inspiration was.
35:14You actually could see someone wearing a version of that.
35:17Absolutely.
35:18But it was still powerful on the runway.
35:20And I love how he interpreted the brush strokes.
35:23It was very well thought out from the brush strokes to the chiffon, to the hair, to the shoes.
35:28The whole package was there.
35:29And that's what art should be.
35:30Everything comes together perfectly.
35:32I just come up with a little show with the execution at the end.
35:35It looks like it was just stuck on and it could be unstuck as easily.
35:39Yeah.
35:40But it's very well done.
35:42All right.
35:43Let's talk about the designers that we didn't love.
35:45Oliver, for example.
35:47It didn't work.
35:48There's one too many random layers on top, one too many on the bottom, and it was just not executed at all well.
35:57His clothes, they're like Valium clothes.
36:01They just make you kind of fall asleep, you know?
36:05It's too tasteful, like you said.
36:06Yeah.
36:07And that definitely holds him back.
36:09When he walked into the casting, I was blown away.
36:12And now you're bored to tears.
36:14And now I'm bored.
36:15Everything that he does is so gray and sad.
36:18Sad.
36:19The painting was so much more interesting than the dress.
36:22The colors on it were much more vibrant.
36:23It's true.
36:24He chilled this blah palette, this nasty material.
36:27Valium fashion.
36:28And we are done.
36:30Done.
36:31All right.
36:32Let's talk about Josh.
36:33He's still in love with his hooker.
36:36Talk about a missed opportunity.
36:38Joshua C. had this incredible painting of this wolf.
36:43Powerful.
36:44Dimensional.
36:45Interesting.
36:46And instead, she's a hostess slash hooker.
36:50When you break down the pieces, it is a high-waisted.
36:53Ugly skirt.
36:54Leather.
36:55From them all.
36:56A white blouse.
36:57Yeah.
36:58It's just the harness where he tries to distinguish himself from pure generic dominatrix wear.
37:03And I just think he just missed it.
37:05Were you surprised from Birch today?
37:08Surprised, but not in a good way.
37:10Not even, like, surprised.
37:11It's like, oh, that's different.
37:13No, I think it looked like something a Teletubby would wear to a party.
37:17Who would?
37:18Heidi, I know you've been craving a very stiff jumpsuit that will make your ass look that
37:24long.
37:25Come on.
37:26And it looks like you're having baby number five when you wear it.
37:30No, you look like you are baby number five.
37:32You are baby number five.
37:33You're right.
37:34You're right.
37:35I'm making you wear that.
37:36I don't want to wear that.
37:37The toys got glued, right?
37:38Exactly what I thought.
37:39Well, you know what you do with infants?
37:40You attach their mittens to them so they can't lose them.
37:44Right.
37:45Velcro.
37:46So he attached all of his possessions to them.
37:48See, it's very practical.
37:49And sent them out on the street.
37:50If these were flat, less three-dimensional.
37:53The 3D didn't help.
37:54It didn't help.
37:55No, they were sponges.
37:56It's like, oh, I'm cleaning my kitchen.
37:58Beep.
37:59Oh, I'm cleaning the floor.
38:00Boop.
38:01I mean, and what's with the belt matching the shoe?
38:03All she needed was a purse.
38:05I agree.
38:06That's a little old farty farty.
38:07It's just awkward.
38:08Okay, so we've made our decision.
38:11Mm-hmm.
38:12Okay, let's bring them back out.
38:19The six of you will present the best and the worst.
38:22One of you will be named the winner.
38:26And one of you will be out.
38:31Anthony Ryan.
38:33Congratulations.
38:34You're the winner of this challenge.
38:37Thank you so much.
38:38We loved your bold brush stroke inspiration and the fact that you gave us a strong, modern
38:44look.
38:45You also have immunity and you cannot be eliminated for the next challenge.
38:48You can leave the runway.
38:49Congratulations.
38:50I'm so excited.
38:51Woo!
38:52Yay!
38:53I'm a bride.
38:54I'm not a bridesmaid anymore.
38:55I'm an official bride.
38:56My groom can take me on my honeymoon.
38:57I have one.
38:58Joshua, you're in.
38:59You can leave the runway.
39:00You're in.
39:04I'm a bride.
39:05I'm a bride.
39:06I'm not a bridesmaid anymore.
39:07I'm an official bride.
39:08My groom can take me on my honeymoon.
39:09I have one.
39:10Joshua, you're in.
39:11You can leave the runway.
39:13Good job.
39:14Thanks.
39:15Laura, you're in.
39:16You can leave the runway.
39:18Congratulations.
39:23Burt, you're lucky that I liked your outfit.
39:25You're in.
39:26You can leave the runway.
39:28Thanks.
39:29Josh Oliver one of you will be out Josh we did not think that your look was avant-garde we thought
39:39it was just bad you had such a powerful work of art as your inspiration but you failed to live
39:45up to it Oliver your construction was a mess and on top of that your look was just sad and
39:53blah you bored us Oliver
39:57you're in keep the runway
40:09I'm sorry Josh that means you're out and I have to give you my outfit as in for the second time

40:59project runway designers only get to experience once well it's been amazing to have you back
41:05so sorry to send you to the work room again to clean up your space so much work I am not happy
41:11to be leaving but I am very content with my effort and very pleased that I am who I am I'm gonna keep
41:20on designing this is just the beginning next time on project runway for this challenge you will be
41:28working in two teams of five that is a disaster just waiting to happen I'm asking you if this is how
41:35it's gonna be because I will not have it Bert Joshua woke up on the wrong side of the bed and he wants to
41:42fight somebody I wasn't able to make it back to see my mom that textile gives me the hives I think it
