00:02:21Krita Gita, which means in English it is gratitude. But I have purposely chosen the word Krita Gita over
00:02:27here, the reason for which we will be discussing in our presentation. So, right. So, I have tried to,
00:02:36you know, I have delivered the same presentation or the same topic at various places. The input I got
00:02:44there is it is too much, you know, research-oriented. So, this time I have tried to make it a little bit
00:02:50more practical oriented. Fine. So, I will start with a small, very small, you know, I should say,
00:02:57exercise. We have seen this particular, you know, glass way back in when, whenever we were in, you know,
00:03:05second standard or third standard. Our teacher used to, you know, come up with some same, you know,
00:03:11diagram or picture asking us, what do you see? So, the same question I, you know, I have come up with you.

00:04:52So, the, the reason behind this question is,
00:04:56why I have chosen Kritagyata over the word gratitude is,
00:05:00see, I'm not claiming, it is my observation, that our
00:05:03notion or conceptualization of gratitude. From our, I mean,
00:05:09Eastern. Eastern perspective of gratitude or Kritagyata is much wider than that of the Western.
00:05:15From this very diagram, I'm going to give some, sir, insight.
00:05:19See, uh, from very young age, when we were in the school, the same diagram,
00:05:24the same picture was shown to us. And our answer was, this is half full of water.
00:05:29If a student says it is half full of water, that student is, you know,
00:05:33supposed to be very optimistic. And if certain student says, this is not,
00:05:38it is half empty, that student is labeled as pessimist. Isn't it?
00:05:42So, but I have, you know, connected this with the gratitude.
00:05:46I say that I am grateful because I have a glass full of water, half full of water. That is fine.
00:05:54But what about this empty space? Is it real empty?
00:06:01There is air, you know, in this half space. And if I ask you, what is more important, air or water?
00:06:09Naturally, your answer will be water, air itself, because we can live without water for two, three,
00:06:14four, five days. But without air, you know, in 10 seconds, we'll be somewhere else. Isn't it?
00:06:20So, in our life also, what I have observed, we have neglected the more important things
00:06:27in lieu of less important. See, water is important. I agree with it. But what is more important is air.
00:06:34But none of our participants, even in my previous, you know, workshops also,
00:06:39none of the participants appreciated this, that the water, this, the glass is not half empty. Rather,
00:06:45it contains a more valuable item, which is air. So Indian notion of gratitude says, I am grateful for
00:06:53water as well as grateful for air. And it goes one step ahead also. If I consider it is to be empty,
00:07:02our notion of emptiness is supreme. What we want in our life?
00:07:06Emptiness, whenever we meditate or whenever we do any charity, whenever we do anything,
00:07:14one of the reason behind our entire activities is to get to have a feeling of emptiness.
00:07:23So I am grateful for water, grateful for air and grateful for a chance of experiencing the emptiness.
00:07:31Then we go one step ahead. What about the glass? Shouldn't I be grateful for this glass also?
00:07:37But if, because if I don't have the glass, then you know how I'm going to consume the water.
00:07:43Then we go one step ahead. I have water, I have glass, I have emptiness, I have air that is sufficient.
00:07:54But nowadays, as a scholar of organizational behavior and HR, you know, I'm observing a new
00:08:00type of occupational hazard that is coming in generation Z, which is lack of water, lack of, you know,
00:08:07lack of thirst. They keep on working hours, hours or hours, eight hours, 10 hours, but they don't consume
00:08:13enough water. And we know that the scarcity of water is the mother of a number of diseases in our body,
00:08:19you know, starting with diabetes, kidney disease, et cetera, and et cetera.
00:08:24What I, why I'm telling you, because in psychology, we say two plus two, if you know, if I'm hungry,
00:08:29two plus two is, two plus two is four chapati. It is not four. In psychology, we say two, two,
00:08:35what? Chapati, the person will say four chapati, four answer. So if I'm observing water over here,
00:08:42it means I have thirst somewhere in my mind. You just imagine, you have a fast today.
00:08:50So from the very moment you, you know, left out from your home and say, you, you know, cover one and
00:08:56half hour or two hours to, you know, reach your workplace. So you will, you know, notice a number
00:09:04of, you know, items, eatable items, a number of eatable shops, the shops, you know, canteens,
00:09:12as well as restaurants, which you might not have noticed throughout your, you know, last two years,
00:09:18because you are hungry, because you are hungry. So all your senses are searching for the food.
00:09:23So if I am noticing water over here, that means I have, I still have thirst within myself. So there
00:09:32was a survey. I am unable to recall the exact name of the party who conducted the survey. They conducted
00:09:38survey among Genji, inquiring about their intake of water, that how much water they take on the daily
00:09:48basis. So any guesses? 1.5, 1.5, 1.5 liters. Yeah. 432 ml. You will be surprised when it is only 432 ml.
00:10:07They told Genji that Genji is consuming only 432 ml of water per day. And, you know,
00:10:15doctors say it should be 2 to 3 liters. Why does it happen? Because they keep on postponing the thirst.
00:10:20They keep on postponing the thirst. So they keep on postponing and slowly and steadily, our body,
00:10:29our body is very adaptive. It starts, it stops demanding the water. So I am grateful I have water.
00:10:37I am grateful I am, I have air for the glass, for the emptiness and for the thirst. Then we may go,
00:10:44you know, there are a number of infinite number of steps. Then we can go ahead. See, I have thirst,
00:10:50but I am able to drink water also, because you will find a number of people who are willing to drink water,
00:10:56but they cannot, because their physical health don't allow them. You might have met a number of
00:11:02diabetic people. Their doctor suggests, so I am grateful because I am able to drink water also. I am
00:11:11willing and I am able to drink, I am able to digest the water. This is the depth, you know, we can,
00:11:16you know, keep going, we can go on, you know, defining it and, you know, a hundred more steps,
00:11:23at least hundred more steps we can go. This is the depth of Indian notion of gratitude.
00:11:27It is not likely I should be restricted to what I am observing only. I just give you an example.
00:11:35See, I have this, you know, mouse in with me. So this mouse, particular mouse is being prepared.
00:11:41A number of, you know, a number of technology, technology, of course, has been used, but a number
00:11:46of people has contributed. That's why this mouse is today's with me. Somebody has conceptualized the idea,
00:11:52then somebody worked upon it. Somebody invested heavy, you know, amount of money. Somebody worked
00:11:58upon it. Kuch engineer, kuch technician laghe, workers ne kaam kya, then it went to, you know,
00:12:02wholesaler, then it went to the seller, then me reinvested in isko purchase karke mujhe diya.
00:12:07So if I am disrespecting this particular mouse, aren't I disrespecting the effort of all those people who
00:12:15I am disrespecting all those people. So this is the depth of the Indian gratitude, Indian notion of
00:12:30Krita Gita. That's why I have highlighted the word Krita Gita over gratitude here. So again, a very simple
00:12:36exercise for five minutes. You might have notebooks with you. So on the very left column, you just write
00:12:45down five to ten items for which you are grateful in your life. It could be anything. It could be like,
00:12:52I am grateful to my parents. In the middle column, I request you to write all those things of your life,
00:13:00which are part of your life, but you don't want them in your life. Like I don't want tension in my life,
00:13:07but it is part of my life. You may write over here. And in third, third column, I request you to write
00:13:14down your wishes. Suppose Brahma Ji is in front of you, and he is saying, Vardhaan maangou,
00:13:20You can have an infinite number of Vardaan.
00:13:25Please take 5 minutes.
00:13:29In the leftmost column, the things for which you are grateful in your life.
00:13:42In this middle column, all those things which are part of your life but you don't want them in your life.
00:13:49And in the third column, please write down your wishes.
00:13:52It could be a big car, you want a bungalow, you want a job, spouse, anything.
00:14:19You have a good name.
00:14:24How can you anchor them from the beginning of that dramatically?
00:14:27How could you anchor them into the next slide?
00:14:29How could you anchor them from there?
00:14:31Or try these errors if you could menu?

00:18:07So using certain permutation combination, applying statistics, so I rang, and this is the result

00:18:31The first and foremost
00:19:01thing that we should be grateful is

00:20:55of pranas
00:20:55and as the human being
00:20:57we are at the 9th level

00:21:00Krishna is at the 16th level
00:21:02but the beauty is
00:21:05even the people
00:21:06even the person
00:21:07at the 15th level
00:21:08need to come
00:21:09at the 9th level
00:21:10to reach the 16th level.
00:21:11So 9th level
00:21:12the human level
00:21:13is like
00:21:14what should call it
00:21:15it is a Chorahatai.
00:21:18So in order to reach
00:21:20the pinnacle of life
00:21:22that is Buddhism
00:21:23one has to be
00:21:24human being.
00:21:25After human being
00:21:26there are Yakshas
00:21:27there are you know
00:21:28other creatures
00:21:29Pitra
00:21:29there are Pitra
00:21:30but to reach the pinnacle
00:21:32which is the Buddhism
00:21:33which is the
00:21:34you know
00:21:36to get enlightenment
00:21:37one needs to be
00:21:38a human being.
00:21:39No animal
00:21:39you know
00:21:40below 9th level
00:21:41is below 9th is
00:21:428th level
00:21:42is animal
00:21:42no animal
00:21:44can reach the
00:21:45you know
00:21:45enlightenment
00:21:46the stage of
00:21:47enlightenment
00:21:47even the devata
00:21:49cannot reach
00:21:50the stage of
00:21:51enlightenment
00:21:51it is the
00:21:52the stairs
00:21:54to enlightenment
00:21:55starts with
00:21:56the human life
00:21:57only.
00:21:58It is being given
00:21:59in the Hinduism
00:21:59that's why
00:22:00it is being said
00:22:01when Buddha
00:22:02attained the
00:22:03enlightenment
00:22:03all the devatas
00:22:05all the angels
00:22:07came to him
00:22:07and they worshipped him.
00:22:09although at the
00:22:11level of the

00:22:14their prana

00:22:16higher than

00:23:03you all are

00:23:05already suggests

00:23:09Ajinkes are

00:23:11the gurus
00:23:12in their
00:23:13life and
00:23:14they are
00:23:15grateful for
00:23:15the guru
00:23:15that means
00:23:16they have
00:23:16mumuksha
00:23:17the quest
00:23:18for enlightenment.
00:23:19So I am
00:23:19grateful or
00:23:21we should all
00:23:21be grateful
00:23:22that we have
00:23:23this particular
00:23:23mumuksha.
00:23:24then sound
00:23:26mind I
00:23:27used to
00:23:28stay in
00:23:28a district
00:23:29in Ambala.
00:23:30It is a
00:23:31district in
00:23:31Haryana.
00:23:32So I was
00:23:33walking in
00:23:34Delhi and
00:23:34you know
00:23:35will go to
00:23:37Ambala only
00:23:37on the
00:23:38weekend.
00:23:39So I

00:23:40bus and
00:23:40used to
00:23:41walk towards
00:23:41my home
00:23:42which is

00:25:23his wife is
00:25:25suffering from
00:25:25certain psychiatric
00:25:27issue.
00:25:28OCD she is
00:25:28suffering from
00:25:30OCD.
00:25:31Obsessive
00:25:31compulsive
00:25:32disorder and
00:25:34it is a
00:25:34special type
00:25:36of OCD in
00:25:37which she is
00:25:38compulsively
00:25:39engaged in
00:25:42one particular
00:25:43thought.
00:25:44Suppose in
00:25:45morning she
00:25:45got up and
00:25:46she got a
00:25:47thought that
00:25:47I should
00:25:48write the
00:25:49numbers of
00:25:50the credit
00:25:51card that
00:25:51she possesses.
00:25:52So throughout
00:25:53the day she
00:25:54will keep on
00:25:54writing the
00:25:55credit card
00:25:56numbers here
00:25:57and there.
00:25:58So I met
00:25:59my friend he
00:25:59was so
00:26:00depressed.
00:26:01He himself
00:26:02was of
00:26:03sound mind
00:26:03but he is
00:26:04one of his
00:26:05near and
00:26:06dear one.
00:26:06His wife
00:26:07was not
00:26:08suffering from
00:26:10OCD.
00:26:11So I
00:26:11realized that
00:26:12how grateful
00:26:13I am that
00:26:13none of my
00:26:14near and
00:26:15dear is
00:26:16suffering from
00:26:16such a
00:26:17disease because
00:26:18my friend
00:26:20told me
00:26:20that okay
00:26:22the problem
00:26:23of OCD
00:26:23is with my
00:26:25wife but
00:26:26throughout the
00:26:27day he
00:26:28needs to
00:26:29counsel him.

01:14:57made up of
01:14:57human skull
01:14:58and human
01:15:00skull you
01:15:00know it is
01:15:01unending
01:15:01desire so
01:15:03one of the
01:15:04reasons because
01:15:05of which we
01:15:05remain ungrateful
01:15:07is our
01:15:07unending desires
01:15:08as soon as
01:15:10one desire is
01:15:10fulfilled it
01:15:12is taken for
01:15:13granted and
01:15:15we remain
01:15:15ungrateful
01:15:16unsatisfied
01:15:17uncontended
01:15:18through our
01:15:19life and
01:15:20last thing is
01:15:21distrust in
01:15:22God's plan
01:15:23some way down
01:15:25the line when
01:15:26things don't
01:15:27happen as per
01:15:27our plan we
01:15:29become ungrateful
01:15:30we start cursing
01:15:31God it should
01:15:33not be done
01:15:34like this it
01:15:35should not be
01:15:35done like this
01:15:36I personally
01:15:37feel that God
01:15:39is more intelligent
01:15:40than me
01:15:40so and in
01:15:43India we believe
01:15:44that everything
01:15:45happens with the
01:15:46you know with
01:15:47his permission
01:15:48so if he is
01:15:49doing something
01:15:50for me it
01:15:51might be you
01:15:52know bad if
01:15:53I may feel
01:15:54unsatisfied or
01:15:56I may feel bad
01:15:57in short term
01:15:58but in long
01:15:59term definitely
01:16:00it is going to
01:16:00help me

01:16:03whenever challenge

01:16:08have ups and
01:16:08downs whenever

01:16:14God's plans or
01:16:15you are trusting
01:16:15your own plans
01:16:16definitely answer
01:16:18is you must trust

01:16:22grateful for
01:16:23even the
01:16:23challenging and
01:16:24downs in my
01:16:24life
01:16:25so there are

01:16:28are short of
01:16:29time how to
01:16:30remain grateful

01:16:31number of
01:16:32gratitude
01:16:33journaling is
01:16:34there practice
01:16:36gratitude in
01:16:36routine activities

01:16:40through a novel
01:16:40again suffering
01:16:42from Shakespeare
01:16:43thing I don't
01:16:44recall the name
01:16:45again of book
01:16:46as well as the
01:16:47author but he
01:16:48told a very
01:16:49beautiful thing
01:16:49see he
01:16:52he referred
01:16:53that in his
01:16:54life he never
01:16:55disrespected any
01:16:57known living
01:16:58thing if he is
01:17:00having mobile he
01:17:00will put this

01:17:02is putting his

01:17:05takes care of
01:17:06his you know if
01:17:07he is he has to

01:18:03playing with your
01:18:04sibling express your
01:18:05gratitude towards
01:18:06them then you become
01:18:0710 years old you
01:18:08express your gratitude
01:18:09towards your parents
01:18:10towards your teachers
01:18:12towards your guru
01:18:13towards your friends
01:18:14slowly and steadily you
01:18:17become 15 years 20
01:18:18years and to the
01:18:20your present age then
01:18:21introspection is very
01:18:22important yes
01:18:23introspection is very
01:18:25important please try to
01:18:26introspect all the
01:18:28challenges of your life
01:18:29of your past past
01:18:31challenges of your life
01:18:32you will realize that
01:18:34every challenge of your
01:18:35life has given you
01:18:35something at least it
01:18:37has given you the
01:18:38strength then last is
01:18:40gratitude letter
01:18:41this is a fun very
01:18:43fantastic exercise i
01:18:45request you to go do
01:18:46it in which you write a
01:18:48gratitude letter to
01:18:50somebody you want to
01:18:51express the thank you
01:18:53you want to express your
01:18:54thankfulness
01:18:55your true feeling through
01:18:58this letter and second
01:19:00exercise is you go to
01:19:02that particular person and
01:19:04hand over this particular
01:19:05letter to that particular
01:19:07thing
01:19:07see this is very difficult
01:19:09exercise in India
01:19:10especially if you are you
01:19:12want to express your
01:19:12gratitude towards your
01:19:13family member especially
01:19:15your father and mother
01:19:16i did it i express i wrote
01:19:20gratitude letter for my
01:19:21father and handed over to
01:19:23it
01:19:23banajit will you know
01:19:25will realize the answer of
01:19:30my father
01:19:31answer of my father
01:19:33have you drunk are you
01:19:41drunk today because in
01:19:42India public affection
01:19:44public display of affection
01:19:45or even in the family we
01:19:47don't say i love you to
01:19:48each other
01:19:48even if i want to say i love
01:19:51you to my life wife i would
01:19:54do it in a you know in a
01:19:56room not in front of
01:19:57everybody so in India
01:19:59gratitude letters are a
01:20:01bit difficult if you are
01:20:02doing it with your family

01:20:04do but it is a very
01:20:05wonderful exercise believe
01:20:07me you do it is a very
01:20:08wonderful exercise so thank

01:20:13half hour anything to
01:20:15discuss anything to share

01:20:22yeah there's um you make
01:20:29me think about a lot of
01:20:30kind of universal concepts
01:20:32that exist around different
01:20:35wisdom traditions and um
01:20:38so you know in virtue ethics
01:20:43in the the greek tradition
01:20:45rather than talk about
01:20:46gratitude they talk about
01:20:47generosity but it's it talks
01:20:51about the same dynamics and
01:20:53also a lot of what you
01:20:55said was very very similar
01:20:58to the stoic philosophers who
01:21:00were contemporaries of of
01:21:02aristotle as well um yeah so
01:21:06it it's it's just fascinating
01:21:08that these
01:21:08these deep very profound
01:21:13insights have emerged in in
01:21:16almost every part of the
01:21:18world
01:21:18so it was it's kind of it's
01:21:23reassuring to think that um
01:21:26that there can be some unity of
01:21:31perspective about these these
01:21:33deep and profound wise insights
01:21:37about the nature of life and
01:21:39reality so yeah so it's not a
01:21:41question it's just a comment
01:21:43really
01:21:43sure sure sure sure thank you and i
01:21:48actually once wrote a journal
01:21:49article
01:21:49um about knowledge and generosity
01:21:53and the fact that knowledge is
01:21:56completely um dependent on
01:22:00generosity to to do its work
01:22:02yes yes yes
01:22:05i'm also feeling really grateful that i
01:22:12could attend this presentation and i
01:22:14can connect i could connect to many
01:22:15of the things which you were sharing
01:22:17starting from the
01:22:19example exercise how smoothly you move
01:22:22to
01:22:22uh other things which are so um which
01:22:26has so
01:22:27uh changed the perspective of how we
01:22:29see even the challenges and a lot of
01:22:32things so i really liked it and i'm
01:22:34really inspired to do research in
01:22:37indian knowledge system currently i'm
01:22:39doing uh research on workplace
01:22:40spirituality as my uh thesis topic
01:22:43so but i have not picked up actually
01:22:46on indian knowledge system which i
01:22:48found out after joining here later on
01:22:51my during my uh phd phase so there is
01:22:54a scale of spiritual climate done by
01:22:57professor pandeji yes so you can use
01:23:00that scale it has indian construct of
01:23:02you know workplace spirituality yes
01:23:03yes so so yeah i'm looking forward in
01:23:08future researches definitely i'd like to
01:23:10incorporate those things
01:23:12so yes uh thank you yeah and you know
01:23:15one of the really interesting things
01:23:17yeah to think about is um the positive
01:23:23psychology literature which is the
01:23:25modern um seligman inspired uh way of
01:23:31thinking about psychology nearly all of the
01:23:33ideas that seligman developed were
01:23:36either um he kind of stole them from
01:23:40the vedic traditions or from the stoics so
01:23:45they are the idea of journaling um the
01:23:48stoic philosophers did that you know two
01:23:50and a half thousand years ago so um be
01:23:53really interesting too and one of the
01:23:56things that kind of annoys me about the
01:23:59positive psychology literature is that
01:24:02they they almost never acknowledge where
01:24:06their insights about human nature came
01:24:09from and where their insights about um the
01:24:13deepest levels of human psychology actually
01:24:16come from and um uh so it would be really
01:24:20really a fascinating study to to trace those
01:24:25ideas that the the positive psychologists use
01:24:29back to their real origins and to to to of course
01:24:34one of the things that that modern psychology
01:24:37does is try to be values free and it's kind of like a
01:24:42contradiction in terms you know if knowledge is
01:24:45entirely dependent on gratitude and generosity
01:24:49then it's entirely dependent on values
01:24:52yes
