00:00
So we're here in Shrewsbury at Radbrook Primary School, that's right isn't it miss?
00:04
It is.
00:05
And we're here with head teacher, introduce yourself.
00:07
I'm Emma Thelwell.
00:09
And you've been here a couple of years Emma?
00:11
I have, yes, I've been the best two years.
00:15
Good stuff. And tell us a bit about your lovely school then where we're going to be having a little tour around shortly.
00:21
So this is Radbrook School, we're a community school right in the centre of Radbrook.
00:26
A fantastic community which is all centred about the values of being a good person, good citizen and being the best that we can be.
00:36
And you've got, you know, you have a few visiting guests. You've got one in today. Who have we got in today?
00:42
We've got Nakoda Smith-Davis who is an Olympic athlete, a judo athlete.
00:48
And who's come in to inspire our children how to, the importance of being active and physically active and healthy.
00:57
But also inspiring them with their, her journey towards being an Olympian.
01:02
The hard work, the grit, the determination to succeed.
01:06
And she's gone down fantastically well this morning.
01:10
The children have been very, very excited and been very enthusiastic, taking part in all of the activities.
01:17
And they're now in an assembly hearing about her amazing journey towards becoming an Olympian.
01:22
Great to hear those stories, isn't it?
01:24
It is.
01:25
And it inspire as well.
01:27
Your Forest School, that's apparently quite a nice area. The kids like going out there.
01:31
Forest School is fantastic. It's a jewel in our crown here at Radbrook.
01:36
And we absolutely love taking our children outside into the Forest School area.
01:43
We pride ourselves with getting our children outside, learning at all points in the day,
01:50
throughout all of their learning, to make sure that they are involved actively in their learning.
01:56
Because we know today, education can be a little bit staid and a lot of listening.
02:03
And our children need to be out there and investigating, problem solving and getting involved in their community and working together as a team.
02:14
And you mentioned the outdoors. You have a few different clubs.
02:17
One of those is Reading Club. And I understand you've even got an outdoor library area.
02:20
We do. I run the Radbrook Readers Club every single week, all year round.
02:28
And reading has been a real focus here at Radbrook.
02:31
We love our reading. All children are inspirational in what they like to read.
02:38
We've had different authors in to inspire our children.
02:42
But our reading spaces are special spaces where children love to enjoy lots of different books,
02:48
both fiction and non-fiction, but both inside and outside.
02:52
So in our play times, the children can choose to spend some time in the outdoor reading area.
02:59
We've got an amazing Radbrook reading shed that we love.
03:03
Tell us, there's been a new change in terms of early years preschool.
03:09
Just fill us in on what's happened there.
03:11
Yes. So when I started here a couple of years ago, Radbrook started at reception to year six.
03:19
And I'm passionate about early years.
03:23
It's important to get it right from the start and give children a really good foundation before they start their primary years.
03:32
So it was important for me here at Radbrook to start our own preschool.
03:37
So as of this year, in September, we opened our own preschool and it has absolutely thrived.
03:45
We've got a wonderful preschool.
03:47
It's developing all of the time and it's giving the children wonderful experiences
03:52
and building their foundations to a positive start to their primary education.
03:56
Sounds great.
03:58
We were having a little chinwag before we started the interview.
04:02
And we were saying about that kind of difference between pupils coming through the school system
04:09
and being academic and maybe achieving well on grade papers.
04:13
But then there's a whole other host of skills that they need to get out there in the world and sell themselves.
04:18
So just talk to us a little bit about your ethos about bringing them on in that sense.
04:22
So the personal development of our children is central, central to everything we do here at Radbrook, but also in Seven Bridges Schools.
04:32
We have our Darwin values, which support the children in being great citizens,
04:39
but also being great learners and knowing how to be good learners.
04:44
For example, stickability, having that resilience and determination to succeed and keep on trying.
04:53
And that whole adage of we might not be able to do it yet, but it's all about the positivity and how we move forward to make that progress.
05:03
Great.
05:03
I love that word, resilience.
05:04
It's not a word we hear enough bandied around at the minute, but hopefully that'll change.
05:09
Well, thank you.
05:10
And we'll enjoy taking a look around your school.
05:12
Thank you, Miss Felwell.
05:13
Thank you very much.
05:15
So we've got a bit of a judo star.
05:17
Introduce yourself.
05:18
My name is Nakoda Davis and I am a Team GB judoker.
05:22
Cool.
05:23
And guys, has Nakoda been kind of talking to you and inspiring you?
05:26
Is that what she's been here to do?
05:27
Yeah.
05:28
Now, I understand one of you does judo.
05:31
Who does judo?
05:32
You do.
05:33
You do judo.
05:35
How long have you been doing your judo?
05:38
I don't know.
05:39
A few years?
05:41
And what have you thought about Nakoda's story?
05:44
Has it been interesting to listen to?
05:46
Cool.
05:47
And have the kids been there, Nakoda?
05:49
Have they been paying attention and listening?
05:51
They have.
05:51
They were fantastic today.
05:52
I saw 100% effort on all the circuits we did this morning.
05:56
And then they were so engaged in the assembly, asking, you know, putting their hands up and
06:01
answering all the questions.
06:02
And they've had a really, really fun morning.
06:04
Great.
