00:00So we're here today for Love Your School in Salatin at the lovely Salatin C of E Primary School
00:04and we're here with head teacher. Introduce yourself sir. Yes my name's Ross Shepard and
00:08I've been head here for three years now. So Salatin is it's not a million miles from Oswestry
00:14just a half a mile from the Welsh border I believe is that right? It is it is a lot of
00:19people believe we are in Wales but actually we're just we're just in in Shropshire in that top
00:23corner. I'm guessing that's probably because the name isn't it Salatin they're thinking oh that
00:27sounds surely Welsh that must be a Welsh school. It is it is yes we're near both camps here. So tell
00:33us about your lovely school sir it's um it's on a kind of quite a diverse levels isn't it I mean
00:40you see this first bit of the school but this is any part of the story? It is it is a lot of people
00:44think we're very small but when you get inside it's a bit of a TARDIS we've got our original
00:49building here and then we've got a second stage of buildings on a on another level we've got a huge
00:54site it's all on a slope but uh we've got lots of uh great uh amenities for all the children to
01:01enjoy and make the most of their time with us in school. And how many pupils do you have here?
01:06At the moment we've just got under 80 pupils we've got four classes with a dedicated dedicated teacher
01:12for each class and we strive to treat each pupil as an individual do the most we can for them
01:18and treat and uh offer as many opportunities as possible and we're able to do that being in a small
01:24school setting which enables us to uh tailor the curriculum and the learning for each individual
01:31so they gain the most from their time in school with us and have as many opportunities as possible.
01:38And what sort of distance are you kind of pulling pupils in from then? Uh children children who come
01:43to our school travel from uh like you say from from the other side the border from Oswestry uh the
01:49other side of Gerberwyn from quite a a range really a most most do come by car and uh you know there's
01:56there's no you know some some will come from over 10 miles away so we've got a quite a wide draw so
02:02which we're proud of that obviously our name uh resonates with lots of people and they want to
02:07send their children to us which is great. So we've got a couple of pupils with us what's your
02:12names guys? Uh so my name is Ted uh Jake my name is Ted. Your name is Ted and um I'm going to ask
02:19you what do you like about your school then so let's start with you Jake. Um so I what I like about
02:26my school is it's not in the middle of a big city or something it's just out in a quiet little town
02:34with loads of countryside you can see around the side a lovely little playground lovely friends and
02:41pupils here to play with you when you feel lonely. Well said Jake and Ted what about you? I like it here
02:48because it's like you've got a lot of things to do like for school because you've got our own
02:53personal field up um from the playground and um base and also um I really like our lessons
03:03yeah yeah any particular favorite lesson for you? Um geography geography oh what do you think I know
03:10you're very young but what do you think you might like to go on and do when you're older so Ted what
03:14about you any ideas maybe? Um I want to be like one of those people who go around to houses and just
03:20like cut their like um like lawns. Oh yeah like doing the landscape gardening yeah what about you
03:26Jake? Uh I don't really know what's going to happen in my future just hopefully something good yeah. Yeah
03:31yeah great stuff well we wish you all the best guys and um we'll let you crack on I think it's
03:35playtime isn't it for you guys now. Right cheers guys thank you. And how long have you been
03:41here yourself? I've been here this is my fourth year I started three years ago so I'm really
03:46enjoying it we've got a strong team of teachers we work well together and we've uh worked really
03:52hard on uh enriching the curriculum providing as many opportunities for the children both in and out
03:58of the classroom we've extended our wraparound care from eight o'clock till five o'clock daily
04:02with a range of activities we take part in stay away trips we we take part in sporting activities with
04:08local schools we have visitors coming to school as well so we might be small but we we aim to give
04:14as many opportunities to those children who are with us as perhaps a larger school would but again
04:20in that nurturing environment where we count everyone as an individual. Well thank you very
04:25much sir for inviting the Shropshire store to take a look around your school. You're more than welcome
04:29thank you for coming. Go. Yes. Yes. Hey.
