Should Duran and Chapman now be off the table?
Should #redsox keep all of their current players on their #mlb roster? Can Bello be a reliable #2?
Transcript
00:00I hate to start the show on a negative note, but we have an issue, and that is Curtis
00:05cannot be allowed back in this studio until the Red Sox lose a baseball game.
00:13This studio, like the continental U.S.
00:16Okay.
00:16He's going to have to stay over in the Pacific Ocean.
00:18I'm here for that argument.
00:21Maybe not the state, maybe not the New England region, but maybe you're right.
00:25Maybe not the lower 48.
00:27Maybe he has to stay in Hawaii until they lose, which may not happen until August or September.
00:35The way they're going, they're rolling.
00:38He's going to mess with the mojo.
00:40Yes, definitely.
00:41And he was the guy who wanted, well, you were also a guy who wanted Alex Kora fired.
00:47I did.
00:48Not so long ago.
00:49No, I did.
00:50I did.
00:50He wanted Craig Breslow gone.
00:54He wanted John Henry to sell the team.
00:56He wanted massive changes to be made over there.
01:00What a weekend.
01:01I am, this city, by the way, is so different when the Red Sox are winning.
01:07It was, it was an unbelievable weekend.
01:10And, and I give them credit for part of that.
01:12Yeah.
01:13They, you know, cause I think when you look at, you know, these, the teams around here,
01:17they're obviously, they're the ones with the longest history.
01:19And, you know, the diehards, they're out there and, you know, everybody loves going to Fenway
01:24and it's an, an amazing vibe and just being part of that ballpark and that history.
01:29I mean, how can you not the way it is right now?
01:32Right.
01:32Friday night was to, to borrow a Courtney word, electric, uh, and the walk-off, which is arguably
01:40the most exciting moment in baseball that can ever occur.
01:44Saturday, I was there for the, the Crochet gem, absolute gem, uh, full, full, uh, full gamer
01:53from Garrett Crochet.
01:55And then yesterday they get it done and, and complete the sweep.
01:59And I mean, it's the, they are on a 10 game win streak.
02:04Right.
02:04And that is the first 10 game win streak from this baseball team since 2018.
02:11And we all know what happened that season.
02:13Well, and what's kind of eerie about that is that happened over July 4th in 2018 too,
02:19against the Nats.
02:20Like it really is history repeating itself.
02:22And I feel like I had to issue a little bit of a mea culpa because earlier this summer
02:28on some show, I was probably the afternoon or the, um, Saturday show with shine.
02:35I was, I, good morning.
02:37On your, your apology, your mea culpa this morning.
02:40I made fun of Alex Cora earlier this summer because he said that the, all the Red Sox needed
02:44was to rip off a 10 game win streak.
02:46And I was like, oh yeah, it's so easy.
02:49You know, those 10 game win streaks that you get every season from Alex Cora.
02:52It was Red Sox.
02:53The last time they did it was in 2018, starting with a, with a Nats series in DC.
02:59And now here they are doing it again.
03:01So doors open to anything.
03:03Maybe the, maybe the Cora situation is because we, we've had this conversation about Cora.
03:09Like when the team was, was not playing well, no one blamed Cora.
03:13Um, and now like you can't give them too much credit, but maybe the credit comes in with
03:18the, you know, just the, the, the vibe of not maybe having endeavors around and being
03:25able to, you know, manage that situation rather than let's say the X's and O's or the, you
03:34know, the end game adjusting so much on the field because guys are playing better.
03:38Um, so maybe it's more of that than anything.
03:41Um, well, it's not like they haven't had sloppy showings since Devers got treated though.
03:45Remember that streak of losing games.
03:47Right.
03:47That is true.
03:48But I think like a lot of people like will say, you know, when I was one of the people
03:52beating the drum of like, all right, is it time for Cora to go?
03:55And now with this turnaround, you can't say like, you can't put it all on Cora's plate
04:00and still like give them a pass because they're winning because when they were losing, you
04:05blame the players.
04:06Yeah.
04:06So now that they're winning, you don't credit the players.
04:08Now you credit Cora.
04:10I credit the pitching.
04:11Oh yeah.
04:12Pitching is what's totally different from this point last year.
04:14I mean, Brian Baio, the resurgence of Brian Baio is so important for this baseball.
04:22Right.
04:22And you got another, I think that's six straight starts for him, Shyam, where he goes six innings
04:29and eats up six, I think.
04:31Yeah.
04:31And fewer than three earned runs, I believe.
04:33Yeah.
04:34He's been on fire.
04:35Is he, he was like three, one, four heading into that game.
04:38Is he, I think he left, I think he's heading into the break three, one, four.
04:41Yeah.
04:41I mean, so I don't, and we got to get into this.
04:45I'm sure it'll be somebody's lead, but I don't know that I want anybody at all gone from,
04:51I don't, I don't want you messing with the mojo.
04:54As I said earlier, when it comes to the deadline now, I think I've completely reversed myself
05:00on, I, if you can buy pitching, then buy, buy some pitching somewhere, you know, do what
05:07Jackson does and roll up to the dollar store at nine 59 and hope they're open.
05:12And I, I, cause I don't know that I want, whether it's Jaron Duran or you name who it
05:18is or a roll this Chapman.
05:20I don't want them messing with the chemistry of the baseball team.
05:24Like maybe I'm an idiot, but it's, but you're definitely going to need pitching, especially
05:30after the Dobbins situation.
05:32So you're going to need, and you were in the market before the Dobbins situation of looking
05:38for another legitimate starter.
05:41So I know Giolito and Bale have been doing really well, but you were in the market for
05:46another legit starter.
05:48So I don't think that changes just because you're playing well and those guys are doing
05:53well, yeah.
05:53Okay.
05:54But, but if you were, whether it was, you know, Craig Breslow alluding to, you know,
06:00going out and getting a serious number two starting pitcher, I don't know that you need to go out
06:05and get a serious number two now.
06:06Like I, I, I just don't know that you'd, because of what you're going to have to part
06:10with, like you have, you, you know, crochet lockdown, zero, zero concerns there.
06:18Um, Giolito has been excellent.
06:21But can you put, can you say, can you go all in with Giolito?
06:27Like, can you say, all right, he's going to be Giolito and what we're seeing all the
06:31way through the remainder of the regular season into the post season.
06:35But that's what you're going to have to do is you're going to have to look at the last
06:3810 games or the last month and, and a day and assume, uh, correctly that that is what
06:46your baseball team is going to be going forward.
06:48I think a lot of people look at the Duran situation and because they've heard so much
06:53about his name going out, they assume that there's just going to be a lot of deals Duran
06:57for X starting pitcher who could be your two or three, but he's most often linked to the
07:02Padres and the Padres only have starting pitchers who are rentals.
07:07And like, it's hard to think that the Red Sox front office is going to give up all the
07:12control they have of Duran for a rental just for this season.
07:16Like they just don't usually operate that way.
07:18So they would need the Padres to go and bring in another team and execute their own trade
07:23even to be attractive enough for Duran.
07:24So like, I do wonder when you hear Craig Breslow with us last week saying we don't
07:30necessarily need to trade an outfielder just because we have all these outfielders and it's
07:34a log jam.
07:35I wonder if that's him saying like, because there's not anything attractive enough for
07:39us to give, give Duran to a team, which I think is a good thing because it means like
07:45they're not just going to throw out Duran because they have an extra piece.
07:49Yeah.
07:49Yeah.
07:50Well, there's a lot to talk about this morning and all day long when it comes to your red
07:55hot Red Sox.
07:56And we will do that with you this morning.
07:59This is Chris from Worcester.
08:00Hey, Chris.
08:01Good morning.
08:02Hi.
08:03Good morning, Greg.
08:04Really, Greg, Mago, Simon, Wiggy.
08:08Thank you for taking my call.
08:10Yesterday I was doing my lawn and doing everything, listening to the game on the radio.
08:14And I don't want to get burnt again because I felt like I got burnt yesterday.
08:21I'm angry eyebrow, Chris Mago.
08:23Oh, nice.
08:24With the angry eyebrows.
08:26Chris and I both have resting bitch face.
08:28Oh, yeah.
08:29Yeah.
08:29It's an affliction.
08:31Do people say you have resting bitch face?
08:35Yes.
08:35Really?
08:36I don't know.
08:37Me too.
08:39Listen, Chris, you got to be all in.
08:43Don't worry about it.
08:44But one thing, though, but would you give it like the two series before the Tampa Bay
08:51series, they were crap teams.
08:53But Tampa Bay, that's when I started buying in because they swept Tampa Bay.
08:57That's why I'm like, I'm in.
08:59I'm in again.
09:00I'm back in, but I don't want to get burnt.
09:03That's all.
09:03And I love you guys.
09:04You have to be.
09:05You have to be back in.
09:07How can you not be back in?
09:09No, I think that most people are looking at it, are back in.
09:15And I think, see, the biggest question that I think the Red Sox organization has to have,
09:21because Megal, you brought this up for a rental, is what is their view on this season?
09:29Forget about next season or the year after that.
09:32How do they view this season?
09:33Do they view this season like they are a legit World Series contender?
09:39And if so, would they be cool with a rental knowing that that rental is going to help them
09:45ultimately accomplish their goal of winning a championship?
09:49And if they believe that, then you roll the dice on a rental.
09:53Because a rental is great if that rental helps you win a World Series.
09:57Yeah, if it's Dylan Cease.
09:58Like, that makes sense to me.
09:59I don't know if they'll think that way, though, if they have to give up.
10:02So you don't believe they think that this year they can win a World Series?
10:07I don't know if it's about that.
10:08Like, I wonder if it's like the old Danny Ainge thing of, like, I'm not going to lose the trade.
10:13I'm not going to give up three years of control of Duran, who was an all-star last year,
10:17to bring in a pitcher who's a rental.
10:19Even if it's somebody who is a big name and can maybe push you over the line where,
10:24you see how many teams were in the wildcard spot that ended up in the World Series
10:29over the last several postseasons?
10:31Yeah.
10:31It's wide open.
10:33Like, it is wide.
10:34It's not like the NBA where you are basically one of three teams who has a real shot there.
10:39Like, it is wide open for them.
10:40But they might look at it and say, business-wise, we're not just giving up the farm for a rental.
10:46I mean, Chapman has to be off the table.
10:48Oh, yeah, I don't think so.
10:50That dude is so good.
10:51I mean, he struck out the sides yesterday.
10:53Oh, my God.
10:54You watch him yesterday, finish that game, and it's like, how can you part with that guy?
11:00No.
11:01Like, I just—
11:02Because I don't think you have anybody to, like, fall back on, at least in the Duran situation.
11:07I feel like there are other guys that you can fall back on if you lose Duran.
11:12Yeah, like, that's the issue.
11:13There's so many other guys that now you're moving Sadan Rafael up to second base to see, like,
11:19if he can work out there just so you can keep all the guys on the field.
