Do you believe the Red Sox should have tried to bring back Bregman and/or add Alonso, instead of address SP?

00:00text message for you 978 text which reads listening late on the odyssey app thank you for that hi
00:08of course curtis blames john henry for major league players being unable to put a bat on a ball
00:16and oh i don't know i don't know that that was the main direction of your lead this morning but
00:21not at all you have the floor so when you have a acquisition of a guy like sunny gray
00:29when you bring in durbin as opposed to retaining we all agree if they give the no trade clause to
00:35bregman he's here playing third base i think so okay i think you would be so you make decisions
00:40regarding the payroll of your team and the margin of error is small i thought in fort myers the vibes
00:48were immaculate seemed like it was the most you know professional loose but successful camps then
00:55you get to the world baseball classic and your stars are dominating on the world stage i thought
01:01although i disagreed with the offseason that the team was going to be very good this year and i
01:06thought they would be the american league representative in the world series that does
01:10not mean that the way they approach their roster building is right and they decide not me to
01:17get sunny gray and have the cardinals pay 20 million dollars of his salary there's a reason
01:23that happens why would the cardinals play the salary of a good starting pitcher to play for another team
01:27like and i it's just i don't understand why we give this guy a pass or why we say that
01:35it's like
01:35well you didn't say this six months ago i don't run the red socks he does and he got you
01:42can't also
01:43then say in the same breath that all i do is speak negatively about them and then get mad at
01:47me for
01:48saying they would be in the world series you can't have it both ways well it does seem like and
01:53and
01:53and craig breslow has alluded to this on this very show he's going to be the fall guy by the
01:58way
02:00maybe that that that their approach you brought up the approach to the season that it was
02:07that pitching and uh better defense can can win you a role or world series good morning right
02:13there and there there were many who scratched their heads and said wait a second uh you got
02:20to be able to hit home runs in order to win a world series and that's the way baseball is
02:24at this
02:25point and so if you didn't have sunny gray and you retained bragman and you brought in um the polar
02:31bear
02:31from the mets pete alonzo where are you right now i'll give you pete alonzo so well they were
02:38going to sign bragman the whole team that they just didn't want to give him a no trade clause i
02:41would
02:41do pete alonzo i mean he's an attractive guy i mean i would listen the bragman thing i wasn't in
02:46on
02:47i wouldn't pay bragman what did he want 165 175 million but that wasn't their sticking point their
02:52sticking point was the no trade clause and that this right to um curtis's point this front office
02:58whether it goes back to ownership or whatever does not seem interested in giving these long-term
03:03deals and that has been out there that they are not that they have this idea about an age cutoff
03:10and long-term deals and they really don't budge often from that but they were so i guess it's like
03:16if you're looking at it and you're going if they're cheap but they were willing to give bregman the money
03:22it shows that they're really not cheap they just don't want to give them the no trade clause correct
03:26that's part of it yeah right so it was more about not the money for bregman right it was more
03:31about
03:32we don't want to give them the no trade clause so you because they don't want to be stuck with
03:35the
03:35contract is the point all right it still goes back to money they don't they want to have control of
03:41the player right so they're okay with giving him the contract if they think a year from now they can
03:47dump the contract on somebody else the way they did with devers okay exactly about money devers was
03:52traded so you even though he because they were able to unload his money they didn't want to give
03:56a bunch of money to a guy and be stuck with him but you could trade him and still hopefully
04:00get the
04:01other team to pick up the money like you did with san fran endeavors right not if he has a
04:04no trade
04:05clause yeah if he has a no trade clause that then they're stuck with them okay and that's financially
04:09based so then they didn't want to give them all right they didn't they wanted to give them the
04:13money but they didn't want to have it be that way where they'd be just to put it out there
04:17a lot of
04:17the other franchises uh-huh that have this approach to no trade clauses uh-huh are the teams that don't
04:23spend okay i mean it's just very frustrating to watch i mean i never mind home runs they're they
04:31they can't make contact with the baseball and advance a guy i mean that was it the fourth inning
04:37last night where brown got him on nine pitches like it's and you're even and i you know i said
04:45it
04:45earlier start of the show like roman anthony i have high expectations and he's 0 for 4 last night
04:54like i i just it's it's concerning the biggest concern for me and i get it like because because
05:02the diehards are texting in and going greg this is the exact same way they started the season last
05:07year and they were a playoff team like relax well the biggest concern relax greg i'm relaxed the
05:12biggest concern for me is the starting pitching because you sold me on this is where we were gonna
05:19be able to make a major difference with this team this year your starting rotation this year coming
05:25into the season just on paper was much better than last year going into the season right we were always
05:31questioning the hitting but they were telling us oh what our starting pitching our bullpen and our
05:36closer and the way we're able to play defense this is how we're going to win games but the biggest
05:41concern that i have is that guys that you brought in to be you know starters and you know and
05:48be
05:48productive when you look at them have struggled you talk about sonny gray and we talk about um
05:54ranger suarez and you go well these are two guys that you had high expectations on as starting pitching
06:00i didn't have high expectations for sonny gray he stinks well i mean that's the first time i heard that
06:06sonny gray stinks i mean in spring if people watch the game probably said he stinks well i didn't know
06:11much about in like spring training i just heard that he was a good pitcher he's coming he's a little
06:15bit older ranger suarez the same thing you know what he was a good pitcher last year i didn't see
06:20him
06:20pitch much for the phillies are good pitchers usually available for another team to pay their contract
06:24well no i'm i i no maybe not okay i mean but what about suarez i mean you paid him
06:30you know 130
06:31million my expectations were all right did anybody i would say here's where i have the issue curtis
06:37is because no one complained about anybody in spring training when it came to the rotation but you can't
06:42have it both ways you can't say that all i do is complain and then i wasn't complaining no but
06:46you
06:46weren't complaining exactly i believe so how do you let me ask you this question if you weren't
06:52complaining and you have this team going to a world series and you weren't complaining about their
06:56rotation and spring training and here we are excuse me two series into the major league baseball regular
07:04season and you're complaining that sounds a little bit like those two things don't add up right like
07:12being uh judgmental of addiction and needing a medicine to stop eating no no judging a team based
07:18off of one series like we can't do this show i say that every day the last week greg i've
07:24said
07:24it's early i'm tired saying it's early where everybody knows that that it's april 1st oh yeah
07:29yeah i gotta take my headphones off i think one oh he's gonna take his headphones off because
07:35when i listen to him i get like my stress level on whoop is going through the roof oh no
07:40it's just so
07:41like i i could see if we went through three or four starts for uh sunny gray or ranger suarez
07:48and you
07:48were like man this guy has really era is like sick yeah and you're like but the fact that you
07:53the fact that you go one start in and so then you think roman anthony sucks what because he he
08:04can't do anything 21 years old but the top prospect but but we're talking about his production and what
08:10he's doing right now why are you not out on him so it wasn't a first it wasn't a second
08:14guess it was
08:15a first guess i said this off season what did you say why do you ask when i'm explaining what
08:21i'm
08:21because you never get to the point dog you go around the corner okay like get to the effing
08:27point oh now he's swearing no i didn't swear oh okay sorry you're so sensitive let me speak in a
08:35language sorry you had to take your little headphones off yeah because you don't make sense you might
08:40want to go to the bathroom oh sean get ready for the dog stay here because i gotta hold the
08:44dump
08:44okay so there he's going to kind of dump i'm not going to say nothing go ahead does anybody believe
08:51that so this off season they bolstered a strength as opposed to create fixing an issue on the roster
09:00and if they had spent the money that they spent on suarez on alonzo and or bregman it's a better
09:07team
09:08i said the margin of error is thin but they looked great i was replying and giving my honest opinion
09:13that i
09:14thought it looked like a great well-run camp by alex cora yeah but the red sox for years have
09:19said
09:19they haven't changed their way of building a roster and every year i say it's a choice they could have
09:26traded for joe joe ryan with the twins who's got zero era in one start this year and they would
09:33have
09:33been a far better roster than trading for sunny gray while the cardinals pay his salary i don't know
09:39what's so hard to understand wait i wiggy is not he doesn't want to have a rebuttal i'll jump in
09:49one
09:49question i have uh because i agree like early i think it's fair early on to be like what is
09:54this
09:55pitching because we were we were told it's going to be pitching in defense that this team's going to be
09:59a lead at we were told that yes we were also what's with the defense yeah and the clown show
10:05in the fifth
10:06inning last night like this if you're going to tell me the offense will come eventually it often
10:13starts out slow for the offense early in the season roman anthony's real young and he's just trying to
10:18he he's maybe a little too disciplined at the plate right now he's a little he's trying to be smart
10:23he's
10:24trying to find his groove yeah i get that but don't but then don't show me the defense that you're
10:29showing last night also say to be fair that he had his groove in the world baseball classic and that
10:34was not so long ago right so fair i think to ask about that right but but you you told
10:40us
10:41curtis curtis brought up the durbinator right not not that impressive when it comes to the defense
10:46we're gonna get the ball out of the infield at one point this year for the durbinator i don't know
10:50when but you told us their biggest thing that they told us and i think this is where the frustration
10:56for a lot of fans come from at least for me is that you told us it was about pitching
11:00and fielding
11:01and how your defense you you knew you were going to be a team that didn't score many runs when
11:06it
11:06came to the long ball so you told us one thing and then when we see the starting pitching that's
11:12the
11:12area where you're concerned and so you might look at it and go all right sunny gray it's one start
11:17ranger swore is it's one start yeah i'm not going to hit the panic button just yet but if people
11:24are
11:24hitting the panic button it should be we're hitting the panic button because you told us that the starting
11:29pitching was where this team was really going to be able to take advantage of winning baseball games
11:35and you didn't it had nothing to do you paid suarez a bunch of money listen if you wanted to
11:41pay
11:41bregman all right i get it you know he's not ripping the cover off the ball but if you felt
11:46like he
11:46would a guy that would give you more than durbin i could make that that argument would bregman being
11:51here have helped roman anthony this early though i wonder about that because even in the even in the
11:56world baseball classic uh roman anthony was telling reporters just so great being back
12:02with bregman on this team like that guy knows my swing so well it's like having another coach there
12:08and i know sometimes we overrate that stuff in the clubhouse and in locker rooms all over me when
12:14i said but roman is obviously adjusting right now when i said i like bregman being around because the guy
12:20is like having an an additional manager okay it's kind of a shot of veritech if we're being honest
12:26can he help could bregman help you with sonny gray and ranger suarez and i mean because that's where
12:30your issue is talking about roman anthony we're talking about why is it so cool so what the hell
12:34you have to start what do you have coaches for classic he has bregman with him and now he doesn't
12:41so then veritech i don't know who are the some of the other coaches that are in that clubhouse
12:46that are hitting coaches these guys can't help out bregman i'm just saying what's the difference
12:50between him and wbc and now that's one difference you can look at well maybe maybe wbc it's the only
12:56no no maybe it's maybe one maybe he's playing a little bit looser in wbc because you have guys like
13:01aaron judge and you have some of these other players that take the pressure off of him oh so
13:06you think the lights are too bright for him well i'm asking the question now you're here and what are
13:11we what has been the you're you're i mean you're roman anthony you hear the whispers yeah no i'm sure
13:16so i'm sure there's there's a mental f to the whole when you're putting him at the level of like
13:24okay
13:24you're this you need to be the savior of the boston red sox and you start to look and you
13:28say or whether
13:29it's you know guys like david ortiz or some of these great players that we talk about that pressure on
13:35a
13:35player is a lot different when he has nobody to kind of like lean on in the sense like somebody
13:41takes some pressure off me when the world baseball classic got a lot of pressure there's all these
13:45other guys that kind of take it off take it off of them maybe you guys maybe he's the one
13:49who stole
13:49the kit kats oh that is a real whodunit and we don't know has anybody seen pablo sandoval um why
13:58did
13:59they steal so many kit kats i don't know what are they for what are they gonna do with them
14:04where
14:04do the kit kat rank and like uh the not very high oh top five no really oh my god
14:10i love
14:11kit kat is a substantial candy bar because it has cookie inside of it it makes you feel it makes
14:19you
14:19feel a little better crunch horrid take that is really that is rough rough mego sorry i can only
14:25speak my truth i bet you like the nestle or the whatchamacallit also oh i love a whatchamacallit
14:32no no no kit kat is below twix but top five all right below two i'll give you below what
14:38were
14:38you gonna say you were you were saying something i don't remember now i'm thinking about kit kats
