Ramaphosa suspends police minister amid corruption allegations

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu following allegations made by General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, a top police official. Mkhwanazi accused Mchunu of interfering in sensitive investigations and colluding with criminals.

00:00South Africa's president Sarah Marikosa suspends police chief Senzo Michonu
00:05the move following explosive claims from top police general Nklankamu Kwanase
00:11accusing Michonu and deputy commissioner Shadrach Sabia of meddling in
00:16sensitive investigations and colluding with criminal syndicates. In order for
00:20the Commission to execute its functions effectively I have decided to put the
00:26minister of police Mr Senzo Michonu on leave of absence with immediate effect the
00:33minister has undertaken to give his full cooperation to the Commission to enable
00:38it to work properly I've decided to appoint professor Feroz Kachalia as acting
00:47minister of police. Mkwanase also alleges Michonu and Sabia disbanded a key unit
00:53probing political killings linked to criminals. The Commission will
00:57investigate the role of current or former senior officials in certain
01:03institutions who may have aided or abetted the alleged criminal activity or
01:09failed to act on credible intelligence or internal warnings or benefited
01:16financially or politically from a syndicate's operations. These institutions are the South
01:24African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority, State Security Agency, the
01:32Judiciary and the Magistracy and the Metropolitan Police Departments of Johannesburg,
01:39the National Prosecuting Authority.
01:42Ramaphosa has faced backlash from opposition parties who have slammed him for
01:47placing Michonu on leave instead of firing him outright.
