00:00Hello, I'm in South London where a man in his 40s has been arrested on suspicion of arson following a fire that forced the temporary closure of Brixton Underground Station.
00:12The Metropolitan Police confirmed that the arrest was connected to a blaze that broke out in a storage area at the rear of a mixed-use building on Electric Avenue in Brixton in South London.
00:26The London Fire Brigade said it was first alerted to the scene just after 9.40am on the 7th of July.
00:34Firefighters from Brixton, Peckham, Lambeth, West Norwood and neighbouring stations were deployed with approximately 70 firefighters and 10 fire engines in attendance.
00:48London Fire Brigade reported that the fire initially broke out in a storage area and then spread up to the building above with crews working to extinguish the blaze.
00:58The Met Police reported that no injuries had been recorded and that surrounding premises had been evacuated as well as a precaution.
01:07They then confirmed that one suspect, a man in his 40s, remained in police custody.
01:21Fire crews worked through the morning using a ladder truck in a nearby back alley called Electric Lane, quite a famous place in South London, to tackle hotspots and access the fire's origin.
01:34Thick smoke was reportedly billowing into the air and residents and commuters were urged to avoid the area and keep doors and windows closed while smoke was present.
