00:00Hello and welcome to another edition of Look Around London.
00:04Clapham in South West London has evolved from a quiet, rural village into one of the capital's
00:09most dynamic neighbourhoods.
00:13Its story dates back to the 17th century, when wealthy merchants built grand houses
00:18around Clapham Common, which still anchors the area today.
00:22In the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Clapham became famous for the Clapham Sect,
00:28a group of social reformers, including William Wilberforce, who campaigned to end the slave
00:33trade.
00:34Their activism gave Clapham a lasting legacy of progressive politics and community spirit.
00:40The arrival of the railways in the mid-1800s transformed the area.
00:44Clapham Junction, linking London's south and south-west suburbs to the city and beyond,
00:49became one of the busiest rail stations in Europe.
