00:00I got the grip that I've tuned myself in for.
00:02Wow, you don't have that much wind either in the simulator.
00:04And there'll be a bit of wind down at Stowe and a bit of turbulence for Liam Lawson behind the Red Bull.
00:10Guy needs to check his mirrors.
00:12Copy.
00:13And that guy, if I'm right, was Arvid Lindblad.
00:16It was.
00:17Now, Arvid is one of two FP1 drivers for this weekend.
00:21This is his first time at a Formula One weekend in that Red Bull.
00:26It's almost like it defies physics.
00:28Oh, that defied physics.
00:30He felt that one.
00:32Just a touch.
00:32Yeah, it's a big kerb on the exit of that one.
00:35And the funny thing is you're desperate to get on power as early as you can out of Vail through club.
00:41And if you take too slow and out that, you're really going to feel that the tyres have lost their edge on the rear.
00:49And you're so eager to get on power that you can have a few snaps like that.
00:52Hamilton, Russell, Norris, the top three.
00:55We're on board with Max Verstappen.
00:56A bit of traffic there as the Mercedes gets out of the way.
01:00And guess who it was?
01:01Yes, it was George Russell, ladies and gentlemen.
01:04Where Max is, George is, and where George is, Max is, these two seem to go together like a pair of ballroom dancers doing the tango or the quick step week after week after week.
01:14Maybe more so next year.
01:16Yeah, maybe they should be teammates.
01:17Oh, yes.
01:19Oh, yes.
01:20Oh, Toto.
01:21I feel for him.
01:23But you have to go so slow with these tyres after a quick lap.
01:28There are cars everywhere.
01:30And when you're going through Maggots and Beckets at 160 miles an hour, it's very difficult to pick your line when there are cars at every apex.
01:38I'd love to see what George could do alongside Max, basically.
01:42In the same car?
01:43Yeah.
01:44George is driving a phenomenal season.
01:47He really is.
01:48The win in Canada, excellent.
01:50He's extracted everything he could possibly do this year at all times from that time.
01:55And I'd just love to see what level he really is at at the moment.
02:01And the best way to do that is you see him alongside Max will start that it would be fireworks.
02:05It really would.
02:06But with that, of course, Mercedes would have to bench their young protégé in Kimi Antonelli.
02:13It's their future.
02:15So intercoms we go.
02:16Hoping it grips up.
02:18Oh, he got on the...
02:19Running wide and then got on the cover as a final straw, wasn't it?
02:22He's got going again.
02:24You all right?
02:25Yeah, I absolutely lost it.
02:29I'll tell you the best bit about that.
02:31That is not skill.
02:33It is just...
02:34He's probably closed his eyes when it's facing the wrong way and he's opened up and gone...
02:38Oh, my God.
02:39I'm heading in the right direction.
02:40It's going in the right direction.
02:41It's a bit of a tailwind there or a sidewind through Cops today.
02:45And it's just blown the car slightly offline.
02:47And you haven't factored that in to the speed you're carrying.
02:50And then as soon as you're on that serrated curb, the car finally loses grip.
02:54You just look at Alex Dunn.
02:55Yeah.
02:55In the last Grand Prix or last practice session in Austria.
02:59And he really hit the ground running.
03:01But to be fair to him, he had driven the car previously in testing of previous cars.
03:06Those TPC days, as we call them.
03:08He got excluded, didn't he, from F2.
03:11Oh, Lance going for a spin this time around.
03:15Might be those tyres done as well.
03:17It was at quite a slow speed, you might see on the front there.
03:20Russell through the Bale chicane.
03:22Behrman goes 12th fastest and over the line, which comes at you very quickly.
03:26He puts himself about six one-hundredths of a second clear of Oscar Piastri.
03:31Lovely lap that.
03:33When you listen to his, you know, the throttle in Stowe we were talking about before, you
03:38know, with Lindblad, he wasn't getting back on the throttle early enough.
03:41George definitely was.
03:42He was down a gear and he's back on straight.
03:44Liam Lawson will be next to cross the line.
03:46And when he does so, he goes fastest.
03:481.27.6 for Liam Lawson.
03:52About three-hundredths of a second clear of George Russell and about eight-hundredths clear
03:55of Oscar Piastri.
03:56And was third in the F2 feature race in 2022.
04:00So likes this place a lot and his confidence is certainly up at the moment.
04:04Driving very, very nicely.
04:06Meanwhile, Carlos Sainz in the Williams.
04:09Another victim of cops and they're all struggling with this, aren't they?
04:13Because the wind is clearly behind the car.
04:16And with that, you have to change your style.
04:20Your attention.
04:21It's a photographer.
04:24And at any high speed, it's a big step.
04:27All about the steer.
04:29Yeah, copy that.
04:30Piastri fastest for the middle sector.
04:32Leclerc quickest through the first sector.
04:36It says medium on your screen.
04:38He's not.
04:38He is on the soft tyre.
04:40Piastri goes quickest by seven one-hundredths of a second.
04:44We can go on board with Charles Leclerc.
04:46Big stopping distance coming up now.
04:49So important to get this right.
04:51You can lose a lot of time through the chicane.
04:53It's staggering how late they can break there.
04:56And combine as well at the same time.
04:59So Leclerc goes quick.
05:00He was definitely the man of qualifying in Austria.
05:02Yes.
05:03Portilette.
05:03A great job.
05:05All weekend, actually.
05:06This is Leclerc looking.
05:08This is at Phillies.
05:09That's George Russell's lock-up.
05:10Yeah.
05:11That we spotted.
05:13And that wasn't a result of Leclerc being on the inside.
05:18Lots of cars on the inside there.
05:20And even at the apex of Copps.
05:22I wonder who that was.
05:24Well, this is Paul Aaron.
05:25Ah, it was Aaron, wasn't it?
05:26Yeah.
05:26Oh, dear.
05:27Just finding himself in the way.
05:29And at that point, unable to get out of it.
05:31I think the problem was he had two cars.
05:34Yeah, that was my bad.
05:35There was a big mess here with nothing.
05:37Yeah, don't worry.
05:38Yeah, I was out the way.
05:41Hamilton was in the way of London.
05:43Yeah, coming.
05:44I think the problem was there were two cars next to each other before Copps.
05:49So he couldn't see Alex coming in the background.
05:52In those kind of moments, you need to know who's coming up behind you.
05:55And he should have had the warning as the other two.
05:58Whoa.
05:58Gabriel Portoletto onto the grass as well.
06:01And that's at least a 720, if not a bit more.
06:05Oh, he's down to the canvas on those tyres already.
06:07You can see on the front.
06:09That was a big one.
06:10When you watch Carlos' lap through there, he knew he was going to cross the kerb.
06:13So he just turned left, you know, released the steering wheel, ran off the track.
06:16But he's tried to hang on to that lap.
06:19And he's just pushed it a little bit too far.
06:21Yeah, you can get greedy.
06:22When you know you're running out onto the kerb, like I said before, you have to back out of it.
06:25And I'm sure he's not going to...
06:27Yeah, you're flat on the kerb.
06:28And as soon as you upset these floors of the car that run so close to the ground, you lose so much downforce.
06:34Okay, mate.
06:34Are you okay?
06:35Are you okay?
06:36Yeah, it's all good.
06:36I'm off track.
06:37Touch dizzy, I'm sure.
06:39And also, because he's gone over the kerb sideways, it can really damage the floor.
06:44Well, I got lucky there, actually.
06:45Actually picked up the inside rear wheel, didn't it, for a moment there, as it was spinning sideways at high speed.
06:51Yeah, I'd be amazed if he hasn't damaged the floor there.
06:54He was right there and drove a really mature professional race.
06:58Last race, of course, a bit of an amateur mistake and lost the rear in that concertina effect into turn three on lap one.
07:05And it's an embarrassing moment, but it's a rookie error.
07:08And, yeah, we call them rookies for a reason.
07:11I totally agree.
07:11I think that was always the plan at the start of this year, that it was his joke of season.
07:15So the brake pedal cracked in the last corner a little bit when I brake.
07:18I'm not sure why.
07:20Understood.
07:21We were checking that.
07:22You're doing the right thing to bring it in.
07:25Yeah, correct.
07:26Great pedals.
07:27That does the man.
07:28Charles Leclerc currently fourth fastest.
07:31Going through the chicane.
07:33And just losing at the touch before having to back out once again.
07:38A little moment that could have been way worse, but looked fairly impressive off board.
07:44Although a tad slower than he would have wanted through that corner.
07:47So, George Russell, nine laps on this stint.
07:52Lewis Hamilton, six laps on this stint.
07:55It's not a massive difference, is it?
07:56But he's done him into Stowe.
07:58Lando Norris into Brooklyn by the BRDC Clubhouse.
08:03It comes on for an age, that corner.
08:09It's a painful corner for a driver.
08:11It feels like forever you're in it.
08:13And it never feels good.
08:15Understeer or oversteer, it's never that cool.
08:18I thought it, from the onboard shot, I thought he used all the track and more on the exit.
08:23And they moved that gravel back a few years ago.
08:25There's skill in that.
08:28Pigeons, my shoulders look far cleaner than ours.
08:31On the rear.
08:31And I would imagine he's talking about Lewis Hamilton there.
08:34I would expect, after the summer break, a bit of a switch-off in terms of upgrades.
08:39Unbelievable.
08:42That looked like an utter nightmare from Turn 3 into Turn 4.
08:47We've kick-started the F1 action on this British Grand Prix weekend.
08:50With Lewis Hamilton, nine-time winner, quickest in the opening session.
08:55First time he's been fastest in a Grand Prix practice session this season.
09:00Lando Norris, second fastest, separated by just a couple of hundredths of a second.
09:06Oscar Piastri, tenth and a half back in his McLaren.
09:09Charles Leclerc making it two Ferraris in the top four.
09:12Two tenths down ahead of George Russell and Isaac Hadjar for racing balls.
09:17Liam Lawson, his teammate, was eighth fastest.
09:19Albon popped his Williams up into the top seven.
09:21Antonelli and Verstappen complete the top ten.
09:25Verstappen half a second back.
09:26Same half a second to his teammate, Arvid Lindblad, on debut.
09:30Paul Aron, also on debut for Sauber.
09:33We saw plenty spinning, including the bottom two.
09:36Pierre Gasly and Gabriel Portoleto, who was a second and a half off the pace.
09:40Just 1.5 seconds between all 20 drivers.
09:44Bring on second practice.
09:45And then we'll be right back.
