00:00Some pace and some performance out of that car, but other drivers wouldn't. Would you agree?
00:05Yeah, you know, I think, one of the big questions that I think we will get answered here,
00:12that I feel we didn't in Japan, is about Yuki Tsunoda.
00:17Because actually, until Q1, he looked pretty good, didn't he?
00:22He was only, you know, generally between one and three tenths away from Max,
00:27which is a lot closer than we've seen Liam Lawson earlier this year,
00:31or Checo Perez towards the end of last year.
00:32So, but he made one big mistake.
00:35I got an issue.
00:37Copy, copy.
00:39So just let it go on in.
00:41So strap over one, strap over one.
00:44That's a shame, Kimi Antonelli.
00:46Oh, he's got a flat spot on the front right tyre as well.
00:48Oh, he has, isn't he? From the lock-up earlier on.
00:50Yeah, he's clearly got some reliability issue,
00:52but he's got the front right flat spot, you can see quite clearly.
00:57The Orlando Norris has gone quickest so far in the McLaren.
01:02We've talked about, oh, let's have a listen.
01:04Yeah, I got no power, man.
01:05Yeah, copy.
01:06Reset, a control-alt-delete in the garage.
01:08Well, we'll hear from Ted.
01:10I'm watching the onboard here up at race control,
01:12and he's coming through turn 13 at the moment,
01:14so he's heading down.
01:15He's only got one more corner to go.
01:17So the good news is he's able to get back to the pits,
01:19and Ted and the Mercedes team, I'm sure,
01:26will be welcoming him in.
01:27They're actually right opposite our country box.
01:29They are.
01:30A team out in the pit lane.
01:32Because psychologically, for Max to win that race
01:35was powerful for Max and the Red Bull team
01:38in the World Championship battle.
01:40That's what I was going to ask you.
01:40I mean, it would have been a surprise to them,
01:42but also, that would have been a real reality check,
01:44wouldn't it?
01:45Yeah, I don't think swapping the cars
01:47would have done anything, to be honest,
01:48because, obviously, Vesta going deep at 10,
01:51so, again, locking the front there into the final corner.
01:55So he's really struggling with front locking there,
01:58which was, by the way, something we saw at Antonelli
02:01here at the test pre-season.
02:02He was struggling with a lot of front locking.
02:03Yeah, it feels like the car's not working at all,
02:05but it's probably just a grip of the tyres.
02:08Try to maximise full throttle to fully charge it.
02:11Copy that.
02:12Lewis not happy in the front.
02:15Yeah, absolutely not.
02:17Let's have a look at this.
02:20Isaac Hadja into the final corner.
02:22Oh, just locks up the front end there
02:24and goes wide, so...
02:27So, I see, the wind isn't actually behind them.
02:30It's a headwind on the star finish straight
02:32at the moment, so, yeah, just a pure lock-up there.
02:37As Landon Orris as well lock-up into turn 10,
02:40which we're going to see a lot of people doing that
02:43throughout this weekend.
02:50Nice to see the car, though, in slow-mo.
02:53Really, we're not going to sacrifice next year for this year.
02:56And, James, just finally from me, we've been talking a lot about young driver programmes,
03:00young driver development.
03:01You were very involved at Mercedes with Kimi Antonelli's development.
03:05We see you've had Victor Martens testing recently as well.
03:08Is he now part of the Williams driver programme?
03:12Can you just shed a bit of light on that?
03:15Yeah, he is.
03:16Actually, for the top four teams to make that decision.
03:18From fifth and below, I actually think it's a no-brainer.
03:23Lock-up, big lock-up for Nico Hülkenberg,
03:25but he has just gone quickest, having stuck on the soft tyres,
03:28as has his team-mate.
03:29A real heavy hitter on a soft tyre here,
03:31so slightly surprised, I'm honest,
03:33to say Piastri going this early in the session,
03:35but clearly they want to get some sort of a reference for the car
03:39at this, even at these temperatures,
03:41and he's on and off at the final corner,
03:43so they're going to have, well, nearly a full lap of information to look at.
03:48The Alpine chassis, he believes, is working really, really well.
03:51He was very quick at sector one.
03:54You know, they were the fifth fastest car,
03:56just behind the top four teams in the first sector,
03:59which is all fast-flowing corners, fast-medium-speed corners.
04:02Here we go, this is a replay of Yuki.
04:08So, into the final corner, this is where we saw him live,
04:11didn't we, going a bit wide just to that final apex,
04:13so that time will be disallowed if he did that in qualifying.
04:17This was Oscar Piastri, who had gone fastest of anybody
04:20in the first two sectors,
04:21and then just ran wide in that final part of the corner.
04:26It's the tricky bit, isn't it,
04:27because you have to set up 14 and 15, really, coming out of 13.
04:32Do you know? Is it, is it, you know, you're shaking your head at me.
04:36I thought that was a really important part of this track.
04:38Am I completely wrong?
04:39You don't need to set it up out of 13, necessarily,
04:42because you've got a long stray, but you need to...
04:45But if you get 13 wrong, you can make up for it.
04:49All right, let's look at this first and come back.
04:51Well, here's Alex Albon.
04:54Okay, straight out.
04:56Oh, sorry.
04:58It's C2 medium, not used at any stage in 2023 or 2024 in the race
05:03by any of the point scorers.
05:04But the tyres are different this year, aren't they?
05:07They are.
05:10They've moved a step.
05:11Yeah, and that suggests that it is going to come in.
05:13Oh, Luke Browning trying to get out of the way of Alex Albon.
05:17Alex Albon not realising that his teammate for this session
05:21was trying to get out of the way.
05:23That could have been massive.
05:24Wow, that was close.
05:27Yeah, opening up the wheel.
05:28This is where we saw his teammate running wide
05:29at the final corner.
05:30No issues for Lando on his soft tyre run,
05:33and he goes to the top of the time.
05:35Yeah, a bit of communication issue there on the Williams pit wall,
05:39and very, very lucky that the two cars didn't collide.
05:43There was a big lock-up in the pit lane coming back in.
05:49Yeah, he's testing the pit entry, you know,
05:51and that's something he's got to...
05:53It is actually quite tricky
05:54because you come out of that last corner, 14, 15,
05:56and you do accelerate a reasonable amount
05:58before you have to jump on the brakes.
06:00Oh, do you really?
06:01Alex, we need to go in up here.
06:02I know we'll turn a half up.
06:03Oh, come on.
06:04We'll get it later.
06:05It's fine.
06:06Yeah, but when I don't know what the brakes are doing,
06:08every lad, it's nice to do something.
06:12I get the frustration.
06:14Okay, so Alex out of the mediums, as we said,
06:16what I wanted to ask you,
06:17we can see what they're doing here.
06:18You've got the flow vis on the front.
06:19They will then get the car back in,
06:21and they will look at how that's dispersed over the car.
06:23They'll work out the error.
06:24They'll look at what's performing.
06:27Yeah, they're looking at airflow.
06:28They're looking, you know,
06:29and they'll send images back, crucially,
06:31to the aero department, back at Grove in the UK.
06:34They'll be studying these images,
06:36trying to look at the way the air flows
06:38across the, not just the wing,
06:40but everything behind it,
06:42the suspension, the floor, the sidebar, the tyre,
06:45where, you know,
06:46where the air keeps going beyond the rest of the car,
06:50because the front wing is so important
06:51for the rest of the car.
06:53as we see Frederick Bestie pull in to the box.
06:58Fred, it was an excellent job.
07:01Thank you, Toto.
07:03Thank you for the opportunity once again.
07:08And gets to pull away in a Formula One car.
07:10Be in the fight for the World Championship.
07:13And he hasn't signed it to be there either,
07:16but as we said, Lando Norris,
07:17fastest in the McLaren today,
07:20with a 1.33.2,
07:22just ahead of Pierre Gasly in the Alpine.
07:25And then comes Lewis Hamilton in the Ferrari,
07:295.596 behind him.
07:32Then Alex Albon in the Williams,
07:33Esteban Ocon in Haas, P5,
07:35Nico Hülkenberg in the Sauber, P6,
07:37Jack Doohan in the other Alpine in P7,
07:40Liam Lawson, quickest of the racing bulls in P8,
07:43Yuki Tsunoda in the Red Bull,
07:45P9,
07:46and Oscar Piastri in the other McLaren.
07:4810th quickest ahead of Gabrielle Portoleta,
07:50Isaac Hadjar.
07:51And then come the rookies,
07:52Luke Browning,
07:53the quickest of those in the Williams.
07:55Then Dino Boganovich in the Ferrari,
07:57Lance Stroll in the Aston Martin in P15.
08:00Another of the rookies,
08:00Felipe Drogovic, P16,
08:02Fio Hirakawa in the Haas.
08:04He was in the Alpine in Suzuka.
08:05He's in the Haas this weekend.
08:07Frederick Bestie in the Mercedes in P18,
08:09ahead of Ayumu Uasa.
08:10And Kimi Antonelli who had issues
08:12which they will be fixing through the lunch break.
08:14And I'm sure he will be back out on track in FPT.
