21 June - National weather forecast presented by Jonathan Vautrey.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, good afternoon.
00:02It certainly has been a warm and muggy start to the weekend.
00:06Provisionally, Northern Ireland has recorded its warmest June night on record, Friday into
00:10Saturday.
00:11And this hot and humid air is being dragged up a little bit from parts of continental
00:15Europe, but we also have low pressure out in the Atlantic, and that is driving weather
00:19fronts across the UK, providing instability in the air and the perfect conditions to start
00:25sparking off some thunderstorms as that hot and humid air rises rapidly.
00:30So as we head throughout the day today, you could see some sharp showers pushing their
00:34way steadily northwards, a few rumbles of thunder on a more isolated basis, at least during daylight
00:39hours.
00:40There will still be some sunny spells in between all of that, perhaps a little hazy at times,
00:45but in that sunshine it is certainly going to be feeling hot for many of us.
00:50Central eastern areas of England likely seeing the highest temperatures today, at least 31
00:5432 degrees Celsius.
00:56If we see enough sunshine into the afternoon, we could creep up a little bit higher than
01:01that as well.
01:02Whilst Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland all recorded their warmest day of 2025 yesterday,
01:08for the latter two, it is going to be a slightly less warm day today, a touch fresher, but still
01:14certainly around the mid-20s is possible for parts of Northern Ireland and into central areas
01:19of Scotland.
01:21Also worth bearing in mind that grass pollen levels are going to be very high.
01:24High for the vast majority of us today.
01:26So if you do suffer from hay fever, it's definitely something to be wary of when you're heading
01:31out this afternoon.
01:34It's particularly into this evening where we hold the greatest potential to see some severe
01:39thunderstorms developing.
01:40And there is a thunderstorm warning that comes into force this evening across parts of Northern
01:44England and into southern areas of Scotland.
01:47It's here where we have the potential for some large hail, frequent lightning, gusty winds around
01:5250 miles an hour and some torrential downpours as possible as this system slowly pushes its
01:57way northwards.
01:58So do take care over the course of this evening and into the night.
02:02There is the potential for a few isolated thunderstorms to develop elsewhere as well.
02:06We could see a band of sharp showers pushing across Northern Ireland and eventually into parts
02:09of Western Scotland overnight as well.
02:12For the northwest though, it should be a fresher, less humid night to come, around 13, 14 degrees
02:19Celsius for some locations here.
02:21But we are still holding on to that heat and humidity, particularly across the east.
02:26Locally parts of southeastern England could be around 20 degrees Celsius as we start off
02:30Sunday morning.
02:32Despite some of that early cloud that will gradually clear its way off the southeast, it is these
02:36areas that will hold on to the best sunshine over the course of Sunday.
02:40Another bright, hot day to come here.
02:43Up towards the northwest there will be more clouds, a rash of showers pushing their way
02:46in, again potentially on the sharp and heavy side.
02:49And for all of us it will be a breezier day and that breeze may actually make it feel more
02:53comfortable compared to the hot conditions we have had around of late.
02:57The heat though is still in play across the southeast, whilst not as warm as likely we
03:01are going to be seeing today, 27 degrees Celsius is certainly possible here.
03:06Up towards the northwest where we have seen that wind change to more of a west
03:10sunny direction, it is going to be feeling fresher.
03:13Temperatures, particularly for parts of Northern Ireland and Western Scotland are closer towards
03:16average for the time of year, now around the mid to high teens.
03:21Those showers will continue to push their way through as we head into Sunday evening and
03:26that sets us up for a rather changeable week to come.
03:29There will be further showers around at times, potential for some thunderstorms in places
03:33as well and longer spells of rain, but also some sunny spells trying to poke their way
03:37through.
03:38For all of us it will be fresher and less hot compared to this weekend, but still pleasant
03:43when we see any of those sunnier spells developing.
03:45There will be plenty of more updates on all of that on our YouTube channel, so do subscribe
03:50and we will see you again here very soon.
03:51Enjoy the rest of your day.
03:52Bye bye.
