35:36forecasters are calling rita one of the most dangerous storms they've seen and residents along
35:41the texas coast are heading for cover good evening and thanks for having us in for news 13 at 10 i'm
35:47jerry brown and i'm amy hoyt not in the past 90 years have two hurricanes of category four or higher
35:54hit the mainland of the united states in the same year now we may get to within one month hurricane
36:00rita actually escalated to category five and tonight the wind speed is at 175 miles an hour
36:07for the very latest here's chief forecaster jerry tavitt in the storm team 13 forecast center
36:11thank you jerry and let's go to the weather computer we'll show you the perspective on this first of
36:16all this is of course hurricane rita on the left hand side of your screen and tropical storm felipe
36:21on the right hand side of your screen we'll put this into motion rita made a little bit of a jog
36:26towards the northwest this afternoon but is now headed right back on a westerly course
36:30and that is expected to continue for the next 24 hours this track still carrying this storm into
36:36the central gulf coast of texas somewhere over the next 45 hours or so we'll have to continue to
36:43watch that very very carefully in fact as you look at this satellite picture since records have been
36:47kept rita is the third most intense hurricane ever recorded in history of the atlantic basin or the gulf
36:54you can see that little loop there to the northwest and then back down to the west as rita makes minor
36:59wobbles on its way across the gulf of mexico the other action in town of course is the drought across
37:05the southeast 78 right now at panama city airport that fire danger level is very very high well actually
37:11still at high level three and it's going to stay that way or the way it looks not a lot of rainfall in
37:15fact as we look at titan 13 radar this evening notice the showers have just about disappeared we're
37:21looking at the live level two data out of tallahassee now with the heating tomorrow and the easterly flow
37:26and some influence from the outer wind rings itself of rita we will see a chance of showers and
37:32thunderstorms again tomorrow and then another dry weekend so all eyes are on rita we'll have a look
37:38at the track for you in just a few minutes well as jerry just said hurricane rita continues on a
37:43collision course with the gulf coast of texas only three category five storms have ever hit the u.s the last
37:50one hurricane andrew in 1992 with an eye wall 70 miles across and winds possibly as high as 190
37:56miles an hour rita may be unprecedented in the annals of u.s storms jim weeders in galveston island with
38:03this report the calm waters of the gulf of mexico only hint of what's to come but the deserted streets
38:12of galveston and the words of city officials tell another story our seawall is 17 feet
38:19and we'll have waves above that 14 15 feet tonight over one million people are fleeing the gulf coast
38:28of texas and louisiana in the path of hurricane rita government officials say the response to rita
